  • Insulin Pen – Prefered?

    Hey Guys,

Tomorrow i go see the Doc and just wanted to go as well educated as i can.

I know he wants to put me on Insulin and I have a preference for the refillable pens. Just wondering what model/brand everyone is using and do you have a preference? Do they all work the same?

  • Poor Kido is sick

She is still active, eating and drinking but is getting a reading in her ear of 38.5 ๐Ÿ™

Just gave her a shot of Tylenol and dressed her down a little hopefully she drops the fever fast.

  • Testing in public.

So i had a minor issues lastnight.

Went out for dinner with a couple of friends, Had business to go over and decided to hit up the local hang out. Boneless chicken wings… all around ๐Ÿ˜€

Anyways, we where chit chatting and stuff and the food came so i pulled out my test kit.. Of course i did all in my lap pretty much under the table so not to offend anyone. When done i put the used strip in my case zipped it up and put it back in my pocket.

Just as i got my pocket zipped up i hear this voice "Your an ignorant F***"… So i pull my head up and my buddies are carrying on like nothing ( not the first time i tested my levels with them around )… So thought nothing of it, then i get this bump on my back with this burley look guy saying "Listen A-hole when you do **** like that don’t do it in public where you are going to infect others"

Yea.. It was time for a DEEP BREATH! My one buddy across the table stood up and asked "Sir do you have an issue with my friend?" so i stood up and asked what i did to offend him. He told me it was my testing, injecting myself and "Spraying" blood all over the place. Ya…

I said "Sorry sir, i will take other people in to account next time and be sure to leave the dining are before doing it again".

Well long story short, There was an exchange of words at that point… Oddly enough it was between him and another woman at another table… And he was asked to leave the establishment.

    Anyways,

What the hooting poop did i do wrong? DO you guys leave the area when testing your levels or giving insulin?

  • Agressive sports and Insulin

    Hey guys,

So just wondering what peoples thoughts are on this.

One of my passions | Hobbies is Scuba diving. Now we are not talking about your average holiday diver jumping into a 30 foot deep reef in nice balmy 80 degree waters for 20 mins.

I tend to dive upwards to 2 hours at a time in 34 degree water at great depths. Much of the diving i do is called "Overhead" meaning i physically can not just surface because i am done, tired or ill. I have a series of decompression stops to make or i am physically in or under something and would have to make my way out.

Due to the diving we do and the gear we dive with at times we can do very aggressive swimming against some serious resistance ( Current in the water, Gear on our backs and my physical size ). Often when i dive i will skip my morning meds ( not that i was taking them all that often then ) and eat a hardy breakfast..

I would go into the water around 14-18 and come out of the water and do lunch with the guys and read around 5.

My concern now is Insulin, I am not going to be able to just not take the meds however the physical activity which we do every saturday and Sunday morning could turn costly for me now ๐Ÿ™

What i am looking to find out i guess is, Does it hurt to take the insulin dosage after the fact? My concern would be to Carb load at breakfast to be in the water with in the hour but have something happen ( Gear failure, bad weather, ill buddy) that would prevent us from completing the dive and now being an hour or so after eating with a BG level way to high to deal with the rest of the day?

My during dive is not soo much an issue, My buddy and i carry these Powerbar Gels which yes we are able to consume while underwater. I find that if i tend to go low or feel a little off i will pull one of these out and with in a couple of mins I am good to go. We also carry lots of water for consumption.

A buddy of mine who i have yet to get to sit down with is also a diabetic which i just found out, however he is on a pump system and i was not sure if thats the same thing or not.

  • Different types – What do they mean?

I see there are different types and trying to see what the difference is?

    Type 1
    Type 1.5
    Type 2

I was told i am type two.. On Oral medications to assist with the controlling of my BG, However when the test results come back early next week my Dr figures i will be on insulin injections, due to lack of liver functions. However its suggested when i drop a ton of weight and watch what i eat i wont be on it for life.

    Does that change my "Type"?

Sorry don’t mean to be so ignorant on this issue.

  • Dr. Says.. Tofu

    So,

After my Dr. Appointment he asked me to try and incorporate tofu into my diet. Claims it will help fill me up with out the need for carbs.

So i made this, sorry don’t have the exact ingredients and such.. i tend to just make things from my head and on the go.

*1 block of firm tofu ( marinaded in Soya sauce, hot peppers, lemon oil)
    *1 package of mushrooms
*A hand full of both green and black olives
    *1/2 a cabbage
*A few slices of Chicken Bagloni (sp)

Mixed it all up stir fried it up with some low sodium vegitable soup base.

And this is what it looks like…. Yumm ๐Ÿ˜€

  • First Dr. Appointment | In the books.

    Alright,

Printed everything and went in fully loaded.

Walked into his office and right off the start he made the comment i looked much better. Had smile, some more defined features in my face and noticed the weight loss. We have a good long history.

After the nice compliment he laid into me about missing my last 4 booked appointments and making 3 visits to the hospital with in 2 months (Nov / Dec ) and not following up with him.

After we got that out of the way we got down to work.

He was extremely pleased to see the numbers I had, He could clearly see i have decided it’s time. However…

    * he was concerned i was not eating enough ( Which i am always hungry )
    * He was not aware that the clinic doctor upped my Metformin and added Glyburide ( Last appointment showed i was on 1000MG of Metformin daily only )
*very concerned with the pains I am having in my abdominal.

So he pulled out the hospital records and was seriously worried. He gave me copies of the blood work most of it i can’t make heads or tails out of.

Just listing the stuff that looks high.

    *A1C 8.5 (3.6-6.9 ) HI | That’s what the report says.
    *Hemoglobin 150 (135-175 )
    *NEUTS 9.4 (2.0-7.5) HI
    *MCV 94.2 (80-100)
    *RDW 13.3 (11.5-14.5)
    *ALANINE TRANSAMINASE 53 (12-49) HI
    *SODIUM 153 (135-147) HI
    *URATE 379 (230-480)
    *eGFR 98
    *CREATININE 95 (62-115)
    *thyrotropin 1.58 (.35-5.00)
    *PROTEIN-RANDOM URINE .18 (up to 0.15) HI

He preformed some physical exams on me and did not like the reactions he got.

He has great concerns of Liver functions, He said notes in the hospital records show that i had reduced liver functions ( due to a overdose on INDOMETHACIN), Enlarged Spliean(sp) and Fatty liver . He said he has great concerns that my body / Liver can not handle the oral medications required to regulate my blood sugar.

He said i am eating well, however he would like to see more whole grains in my diet (Required for regulating other meds/health issues ). He said that the meds i am on he was hoping to see more consistent readings and not the highs i have while eating a more balanced diet.

He sent me in for more blood work witch i completed and i am scheduled to go back for the results Tuesday morning. He wanted to give me pre warning that he is 99% sure as of Tuesdays he will have no choice but to put me on Insulin.

I asked what he had in mind and he said he does not want to get too involved until these results come back. He has me book for Tuesday morning for a results consultation. He mentioned i would be on something called Lantus ( 24 hour dose) taken in the evening and then a low dose injection with each meal. He did not say what or how much… I think he seen me start tearing up and did not want to get me worked up if there was no need for it till the full results come back.

He has asked me to balance out my diet and not worry about the BG levels.. Try till Tuesday to keep them under 11, Told me not to touch any alcohol and to stay off my Indomethacin (Gout pain killer) till he has the results.

So.. I feel like i just got smacked up side the head with a bus!

I was considering Insulin to assist my regulations, i had no idea i had to worry about my liver!

  • Herbalife Beverage mix’s

    Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone uses them.

A co-worker of mine knows about my issues and knows i struggle and suggested a drink mix she has been on called "Herbalife". She said with her diet she works out and is typically hungry after so she drinks one of these mixes and feels better till lunch.

    I got the details here

Now i know these guys are a bit of a pyrimid scam with selling the product which i have no intentions of doing but she gave me a package to try "Peach mango".

I was interested to see its 0g of sugar and 15g of protein.

  • ** Darn it!! ** Bad Meal!

    So,

Going to the DR tomorrow to go over everything, I met up with a Dietitian today just to go over things and to kind of get a baseline in order to help me out with my DR appointment.

We plan to meet once a week, she measured a bunch of stuff too my weight ( down 18 pounds since January 1st ๐Ÿ˜€ )

She gave me a list of stuff to ask and wanted me to try and get copies of any blood work i have done, including a list of all medications i have and when i am taking them.. Wants me to confirm tomorrow with my Dr. if i am taking them correctly!

She asked what i miss the most over of the meals i would normally eat, I said honestly the simple fast meal we would eat often hot dogs and fries. She suggested was to go home ( Met her in the afternoon ) check my sugars and eat a hotdog and fries meal… she says "Considering a celebration meal" and something to give my doctor a idea of what kind of swings i get.

    So,

    Got home from work tested 4.2 ( 6pm ). Before dinner 4.3 (7pm )

Ate one hotdog with regular bun with a small hand full of straight cut fries. ( Took my 1000mg of Metformin and 5mg of glyburide )

    Tested at 9:20pm …. 12.8 ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

That is the largest jump i have seen and that was taking the extra dose of meds, knowing i would spike and did not want it to go too high.

Needless to say I am fighting to stay awake here ๐Ÿ™

  • Dr. Tomorrow….

Just got the call, The Doctor has an appointment tomorrow at 1pm to see me.

I have the print out from my meters to take with me to show him my levels over the last few days.

I have my diet journal showing everything i have eaten and what each thing did and how much of each has effected me.

What else should i be asking? or looking for.

  • Boost in meds – Working ๐Ÿ˜€

So as some know from my insulin thread i was having issues in the morning.

With working things out it turned out its my Asthma meds that’s causing the increase in the mornings so i decided to change it to the evenings and see if it made a difference, Which it did.

Moving the inhaler to the evening put me going to bed with a mid 4, waking with a mid 5 and staying at 5 through out the day.

However after a couple of days i had minor issues mid afternoon and speaking with my doctor he suggested i go back to taking it in the mornings.

So he suggested that i take 5mg of my Glyburide with breakfast.. So i tried.

GOing to bed with mid 3’s woke up with mid 4 at 6am got to work and before breakfast mid 7… Took the 5mg and ate my breakfast my 2hPP was 4.8 ( Ate 2 eggs, 3 bacon and melon )

Both my sunday and monday days have been the same ๐Ÿ™‚

I find taking the new morning pills as such i end up coming down around mid 3 by 11am which i eat a yogurt and then go into my lunch around 12:30 sitting around 4..which is nice i can eat a hardy lunch ( Salad, meat and cheese ) and have a 2hPP of 4-4.5 ๐Ÿ˜›

  • Insulin for Mornings only?

    Hey guys,

Been having some minor issues in the morning.. Going to bed with a low 5 (90) waking up with a high 5 so its not bad..

Issue is, I am up at 6am and do just over an hour of driving.. Due to this i tend not to eat or anything first thing in the morning due to the side effects of my Met and my IBS.

So what happens is by the time i get to work and eat (8am) i am up in the low 7’s and tend to starve myself at breakfast and lunch to bring my sugar back down to be back on track for dinner.

Now i was talking to my doctor and he is concerned with my lack of eatting and insists i eat a hardy breakfast before i start my day. Due to many of my other issues, which would kill me on my blood sugar!

Now i was talking to the Diabetes specialist at my local drug store and she said she has a few customers who have the same issues and has said that their doctors have put them on a fast acting insulin ( Humalogยฎ (insulin lispro) ) which they take then eat there hardy breakfast and then take the met when they get to where they are going for maintaince?

Can this be done, does anyone do it? Can you mix between the oral meds and insulin like that just for one meal with out complications? At least till I get my weight down and more healthy?

  • Insulin abuse?

    Hey guys,

To make a long story short a friend of a buddy of mine was out with us for dinner the other night and chit chatting found out he his diabetic, seen him take a shot before he ate. However he ate like an animal ( wings, nachos, cheese fries… The whole 9 yards ).

After eating ( about an hour ) I watched him take his BG reading and then pull out his insulin pen again and give himself another injection.

I asked him what he was on and what his routine is.. He said that he gives himself the standard dose before eating and then depending what he "decides" to eat and how much he gives an additional dose after eating to make up for the intake.

I asked if this was healthy and he said yes he has done it for years, that going on insulin was the best thing for him. "My insurance covers the meds and this way i can eat what i want when i want and not have to worry about it. Get off the pills if you can" is what he said to me.

Is this something that people see often?

  • Catelli – “Smart Pasta”

    Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone else has had success with this?

I Decided it was time for a treat tonight, I love pasta… and its the hardest thing to give up so tonight my wife and i decided we would try some Spaghetti. And well prepared to go for a nice long walk and work out on my elliptical if need be ๐Ÿ™‚

    So when i started dinner i was at 5.8 ( 104.4 mg/dL. ) and 2 hours after a nice big plate of Spaghetti and sauce i got a reading of 6.8 ( 122.4 mg/dL ) which i don’t think is too bad is it?

Thoughts / Concerns are always welcome.

  • Skin peeling

    Hey guys,

Just wondering if this is a issue related to my diabetes or something separate to deal with?

Currently started yesterday my finger tips are peeling, i have had this happen in the past and kind of came and went now it starting again. They don’t hurt peeling more a rough thick skin coming off but they do seem to peel down and to very pink and sensitive skin. Cracking in some places.

Just wondering if anyone else deals with this?

  • Need a Morning pick me up..

    Hey guys,

Its one of them mornings for me, and i know many have them. Just wanted to share this. Its a shot i took in the fall just after a horrible storm. Being a photographer i tend to do a little storm chasing with no success yet.

But i got this shot that i find is a nice pick me up to remind me there is always beauty after that storm!
