Ohio: The state of a multi-million dollar hunting business
Posted: 03.08.10 01:35 AMWhen hunters go after deer in Ohio, they create an economic ripple effect, state officials said.The money they pay for hunting licenses and deer tags goes to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife, said Vicki Ervin, division spokeswoman. The money supports conservation programs, such as buying land and producing educational materials, she said.The division estimates hunting has a $859 million economic impact on Ohio.

Tennessee: NRA Legislation Signed into Law and More Still on the Move
Posted: 03.05.10 08:43 AMOn Thursday, March 4, Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen (D) signed House Bill 2376. Sponsored by State Representative David Shepard (D-69) and State Senator Doug Jackson (D-25), HB2376 prohibits the destruction of confiscated firearms and requires them to be auctioned off or sold to a federally licensed firearms dealer. Proceeds from the sale of these firearms are to be used for the benefit of local law enforcement agencies. Governor Bredesen also signed House Bill 770 on Tuesday, March 2. HB770, sponsored by State Representative Mike Turner (D-51) allows law-abiding permitees to carry of a firearm for self-defense during the bow hunting season. HB770 was filed during the 2009 session and was pushed through the legislature in February. State Senator Doug Jackson (D-25) carried the companion legislation, Senate Bill 842.

The bill was tabled due to the lack of support, but anti-gun State Representative Michael Paymar (DFL-64B), despite strong opposition from NRA members and pro-firearm advocates across Minnesota, has pledged to push on with this dangerous legislation and will seek to add it as an amendment to another piece of legislation on the House floor.

Arizona: Senate backs preemption bill
Posted: 03.05.10 01:18 AMThe Arizona Senate is poised to broaden the state’s restrictions on local gun control laws. State law already generally pre empts local ordinances on transportation, possession, sale or use of firearms and ammunition, but the law given preliminary approved Thursday goes farther. It would prohibit local governments from enacting laws more restrictive than state law and specifically prohibit ordinances that limit possession of guns in parks. Also, local governments could not regulate the discharge of firearms.

Indiana: Assembly OKs worker protection bill
Posted: 03.05.10 01:19 AMA bill prohibiting Indiana employers from banning guns on their properties is one step from becoming state law. The Indiana House of Representatives and Senate approved a final version of House Bill 1065 on Thursday, making the legislation eligible for the governor’s signature. H.B. 1065 makes it illegal for businesses to forbid their employees from keeping guns outside in their cars as long as the vehicle is locked and the firearm is stored out of sight. It does not prevent employers from banning guns inside the workplace.

Virginia: Senate ‘kill bill’ panel stops bill repealing gun rationing

The Senate Courts of Justice special subcommittee, which was composed of four Democrats and one Republican, voted 4 to 1 along party lines to table the gun a month repeal sponsored by Del. L. Scott Lingamfelter (R Prince William).
