  • California Set To Enforce “Energy Efficiency” In Homes

Cash for saving energy? California considers this and first statewide green building code

    USA Today
    Wednesday, January 13, 2009

California, long a trendsetter for eco-friendly living, is breaking
ground again this week. It’s set, as early as today, to
adopt the nation’s first statewide green building code, which
environmentalists say is not tough enough, and is also considering
paying residents to cut their energy use.

On Monday, a state panel proposed that most of the new fees
California plans to impose on greenhouse-gas emissions be returned
to energy-saving consumers in the form of annual dividend checks that
eventually could exceed $1,000 for a family of four, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The story says this proposal is part of an effort to find the most efficient way to change consumer behavior.

California is expected today to adopt a  green
building code that would reduce water use, mandate the recycling of
construction waste and step up enforcement of energy efficiency in new
homes, schools, hospitals and commercial buildings, the Los Angeles Times reports.

  • Drumbeat to Boot Geithner Gets Louder, on Eve of Hearings on Disastrous Economic Crash

    Danny Schechter
    AlterNet
    Wednesday, January 13, 2009

When a pitcher gets tired, starts throwing walks or being hit, most
attentive managers take him out of the game. When policies break down,
as in the case of the security system that failed to spot the alleged
Christmas bomber, the president starts talking tough about the buck
stopping here and orders to straighten out a failed system.

But when tens of thousands of workers, once again, lose their jobs,
the people responsible get winked at, not wanked. The president is
contrite, his rhetoric subdued, even as the recovery he keeps talking
    about goes south.

Yes, there needs to be a cabinet shake-up. It’s time to yank
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner from the game, along with economic
adviser Larry Summers. Their pro-bank, pro-Wall Street policies are
failing. Isn’t it obvious? According to an AP investigation,
their road construction projects have had no impact on the jobs crisis.

The establishment will lean toward a Republican to replace him like
FDIC Chairman Sheila Bair, who has proven to be far more competent and
    outspoken than her counterparts.

Geithner acts like a stalking horse for the people responsible for
the meltdown. It’s time to say sayonara, and appoint someone who
has the people’s interests at heart. There is no shortage of
capable and committed Democratic economists who can replace him. How
about Elizabeth Warren or Joe Stiglitz or Brooksley Born or Simon
Johnson or even, for op-ed’s sake, Paul Krugman?

Even Wall Streeters know Geithner is a dead man walking. Bruce Krasting, a foreign exchange and derivatives veteran writes on Naked Capitalism.com:

Tim Geithner has outlived his usefulness. He is too
connected to the bailouts of ‘08. Bear, Lehman, AIG, TARP and
even QE are all part of his legacy. That makes Tim a lightening rod.
Too many Americans hate that part of our history.

I don’t think the current flap relating to the deliberate
“non-disclosure” of information relating to AIG is that big
a deal. When the full history of this period is finally told (it will
take a while yet) this particular transgression of Mr. Geithner will
look small by comparison. The things that we do not yet know about that
we “agreed to” during the “crisis period” are
going to cause us to roll our eyes and bow our heads when all is said
    and done.

Now, there will be hearings to see what Tim knew and when he forgot
he knew it. Market Watch says he is “ankle deep in the AIG
quicksand.” A deceptive defense is being crafted, as Bloomberg
    reports:

    Timothy Geithner,
the former Federal Reserve Bank of New York president, wasn’t
aware of efforts to limit American International Group
Inc.’s  bailout disclosures because the regulator’s
top lawyer didn’t think the issue merited his attention,
according to a letter sent to lawmakers. “Matters relating to AIG
securities law disclosures were not brought to the attention of Mr.
Geithner,” Thomas Baxter, general counsel of the New York Fed,
said today in a letter to Representative Darrell Issa, a
California Republican. “In my judgment as the New York
Fed’s chief legal officer, disclosure matters of this nature did
not warrant the attention of the president.”

Why is the media so quiet on the Geithner front? Cenk Uygur wrote about how right-wing channels are giving him a pass:

If it was anyone else that had screwed up one tenth of
what Geithner has, it would be running on a 24/7 loop on Fox News.
    Geithner gave away
over $62 billion to the top banks in the country in secret, tried to
cover it up and at the very least overpaid these banks by $13 billion.
And that’s just the latest in a series of scandals, with all the same theme—Geithner gives away taxpayer money to the richest (and most culpable) guys in the country. Ah, there it is.

If the right-wing goes after Geithner, then they’re going
after the banks and the billions in taxpayer money they received. The
right-wing media in this country have no interest in attacking big
money, big corporations or big banks. So, while they’ll talk
about how Janet Napolitano should be fired for misspeaking for 10
straight days, Geithner is remarkably bulletproof. Why? Because they
    actually love what he’s doing.

And now the White House has joined the cover-up. Read this exchange
between CNN’s Ed Henry and Obama news flack Robert Gibbs and weep:

Q: Robert, does the White House believe that Secretary
Geithner should testify on the Hill, turn over any documents he has, to
    sort of clear this up?

GIBBS: Ed, I’d point you to the Treasury Department. I’m
sure you’ve already talked to them. Secretary Geithner was not
involved in any of these emails. These decisions did not rise to
his level at the Fed. These are emails and decisions made by
officials at an independent regulatory agency—

Q: But how do you know that he wasn’t involved? He was the leader of the New York Fed.

GIBBS: Right, but he wasn’t on the emails that have been
talked about and wasn’t party to the decision that was being
    made.

Q: Well, Republican Congressman Issa says there are probably
thousands of more emails and he may not be on some that some people
have looked at. In the interest of transparency would the White House
want more—I mean, you run AIG now, essentially—

GIBBS: I would point you to the Department of Treasury, which I think will tell you that—

Q: But what does the White House believe?

GIBBS: I just gave you what the White House believes.

What should we believe? Perhaps another investigation that gets
underway this week may offer some answers. Its lacks the power and zeal
of the independent Pecora Commission appointed by FDR to probe the
causes of the Crash of ‘29, but it will at least raise some
questions. It is, unfortunately, modeled on the 9/11 Commission that
was subverted by the Bush administration and ended up raising more
    questions than it answered.

    Reports the New York Times:

The commission, comprising six Democrats and four
Republicans, has summoned four heads of big banks to testify on
Wednesday at the panel’s first substantive hearing: Lloyd C. Blankfein of Goldman SachsJamie Dimon of JPMorgan ChaseJohn J. Mack of Morgan Stanley and Brian T. Moynihan of Bank of America.

“There is a deep hunger out there, on behalf of the American
people, to understand what happened,” the commission’s
chairman, Phil Angelides, said in an interview on Friday. “It
arises out of anger, confusion and anxiety about their own future. This
will be, in a real sense, the only public forum for examination of this
crisis.” Writes columnist Frank Rich, “Americans must be
told the full story of how Wall Street gamed and inflated the housing
bubble, made out like bandits, and then left millions of households in
    ruin.”

But the Times also reports that the banks and their
lobbying arms have been working overtime to prepare testimony that will
defect all the blame away from them. Will the commission and the media
challenge this disinformation? “Bank employees worked through the
holidays preparing testimony and drawing up potential questions that
will be asked of their chiefs. The hearings will occur in the middle of
the 2009 bonus season, and executives are bracing for questions about
the paychecks that many firms will dispense.”

They are also excitedly awaiting their latest round of bonuses, an
announcement likely to stir pubic anger given that CEOs now make, on
average, 245 times the annual wage of most workers. Bill Moyers reports
they have set aside $200 billion to reward themselves.

And so it goes. Will the truth ever come out? Will the folks who
screwed up our economy—in the government and on Wall
Street—ever be held accountable? We seem to be in the ninth
    inning.

  • Geoengineering Conference To Discuss Blocking Sun

As hundreds die worldwide from record cold temperatures, scientists worry about global warming

Geoengineering Conference To Discuss Blocking Sun 170609top2

    Paul Joseph Watson
    Prison Planet.com
    Wednesday, January 13, 2010

As hundreds of people die worldwide as a result of
record low temperatures in the midst of a savage winter, scientists are
preparing for a conference in which they will discuss measures to use
geoengineering to block out the sun.

“The summit of climate scientists, to be held in
California in March, will examine drastic techniques for slowing
climate change that are controversial and have been described as
    “geo-piracy,” reports the Telegraph.

“Most techniques focus on ways of reducing the
sun’s rays by blocking them using mirrors orbiting in space or by
spraying sulphur compounds into the high atmosphere to reflect sunlight
    away from earth.”

Another proposal involves sending spaceships into the
upper atmosphere to spray seawater into the sky and reflect sunlight
back into space, an idea that would seem more at home in the context of
    some bizarre alien invasion movie.

“Most of the talk about these geo-engineering
techniques say they should be saved until we get to an emergency
situation. Well, the people of the Arctic might say they are in an
emergency situation now,” said conference organizer Mike
    MacCracken.

In actual fact, a recent expedition to an East Antarctic ice shelf showed “no sign of higher temperatures despite fears of a thaw linked to global warming”. In addition, Arctic sea ice expanded over an area bigger than the size of Germany
during the year of 2008, a 30 per cent increase, after global warming
alarmists had claimed that it would be “ice-free” for the
    first time ever.

With areas all over the planet experiencing record snowfall and plunging temperatures, some scientists are warning that we are now entering into a mini ice age, with 30 years of global cooling predicted.

Governments are already geoengineering the planet in
the form of cloud seeding and similar techniques to both cause and
prevent rainfall. Many would argue that the upper atmosphere is already
being seeded with chemical compounds in the form of chemtrails, which
differ from normal contrails emitted by airplanes as they hang in the
air for hours and produce criss-cross patterns.

    A 2008 KSLA news investigation
found that a substance that fell to earth from a high altitude
chemtrail contained high levels of Barium (6.8 ppm) and Lead (8.2 ppm)
as well as trace amounts of other chemicals including arsenic,
chromium, cadmium, selenium and silver. Of these, all but one are
metals, some are toxic while several are rarely or never found in
nature. The newscast focuses on Barium, which its research shows is a
“hallmark of chemtrails.” KSLA found Barium levels in its
samples at 6.8 ppm or “more than six times the toxic level set by
    the EPA.”

KSLA also asked Mark Ryan, Director of the Poison Control Center,
about the effects of Barium on the human body. Ryan commented that
“short term exposure can lead to anything from stomach to chest
pains and that long term exposure causes blood pressure
problems.” The Poison Control Center further reported that
long-term exposure, as with any harmful substance, would contribute to
weakening the immune system, which many speculate is the purpose of
    such man-made chemical trails.

    As we have previously highlighted,
a prominent supporter of geoengineering proposals is none other than
White House science czar John P. Holdren, a key Obama advisor who
infamously co-authored a book in which he called for a “planetary regime” to enforce draconian population control measures such as forced abortion, infanticide and mandatory sterilization.

In April last year, Holdren revealed that high-level
talks had already taken place to explore the possibility of
    “geoengineering” the environment by “shooting
pollution particles into the upper atmosphere to reflect the
    sun’s rays”.

“It’s got to be looked at,” Holdren
was quoted as saying, “We don’t have the luxury of taking
any approach off the table.” The AP also reported that Holdren
said he had raised the concept in administration discussions.

Letting modern day eugenicists like Holdren mess with
the planet would be like handing Dr. Josef Mengele control of the
health care system. Holdren has proven himself to be a barbarian and a
control freak, promoting a brand of bloodthirsty eugenics even more
depraved than anything Hitler proposed in his drive for a super race.

Allowing scientists who have been completely exposed as
agenda-promoting quacks by the Climategate scandal to experiment with
the environment on a mass scale in the name of stopping the
increasingly debunked premise of man-made global warming is absolute
lunacy and should be stopped at all costs.

  • German ‘Fleshmob’ Protests Airport Scanners

    Youtube
    Wednesday , January 13th, 2010

The underwear bomber’s Christmas Day attack has
prompted calls for the increased use of full-body scanners at airports
that would strip-search passengers down to their naked bodies.

So to protest the use of the so-called Nacktscanner (naked scanner),
members of the Pirate Party in Germany organized a
“fleshmob” of people who stripped down to their skivvies
last Sunday and converged on the Berlin-Tegel airport.

  • Body Scanner Installed in Colorado Courthouse in 2008

    Kurt Nimmo
    Infowars.com
    January 13, 2010

If you have business at the courthouse in Castle Rock, Colorado, be
prepared to be subjected to a body scan. “Visitors and employees
must now walk through a contraption many are used to seeing at
airports, hold their hands up and wait to have a 3-D holographic image
of their body snapped,” ABC News in Denver
reported on June 11, 2008, well before the Christmas underwear
non-bomber event and the current wave of government and corporate media
spawned irrationality and hysteria designed to escalate Gestapo tactics
in airports and acclimate citizens to the evolving police state.

    las vegas

Police respond to a shooting rampage at a federal courthouse in Las
Vegas on January 4, 2010. Events like this may be used to call for body
    scanners in public buildings.

“It’s not quite space age but it is definitely
cutting-edge technology. The Douglas County Sheriff’s office said
a body scanner and metal detector are both incorporated in the machine
making it one of the first in the nation.”

The Denver news station insisted the machine is completely harmless. However, according to Mike Adams,
the energy emitted by the machines may damage human DNA. Adams cites a
study conducted by Boian S. Alexandrov and his colleagues at the Center
for Nonlinear Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico
showed that these terahertz waves could “unzip double-stranded
DNA, creating bubbles in the double strand that could significantly
interfere with processes such as gene expression and DNA
replication.” In short, the machines may pose a threat to human
    health.

Beyond the health problems, the fact the machine was installed a
full two years prior to the underwear non-bomber incident reveals that
body scanners have nothing to do with preventing terrorism — the
machines are the next wave of control grid technology. The corporate
media blitz underway is an effort to condition the public to accept
government hirelings gawking at their private parts. Body scanners are
    about submission, not preventing terrorism.

It is also significant because we are told the machines will be
confined to airports. In fact, the machines will ultimately be
installed not only in courthouses – the recent violence at a courthouse in Las Vegas and an earlier incident at a Holocaust museum
in Washington may be cited (the latter shooter was described as a 9/11
truth activist by the corporate media) – but in all public
places, including train and bus stations (recall the TSA searching bus passengers in Florida) and malls.

In fact, we are one false flag incident away from this. In October, federal authorities claimed a man in Massachusetts
planned to “launch a terrorist attack on a shopping mall in which
he and his fellow conspirators would mow down civilians with automatic
    weapons.”

  • Putin Worried About Global Cooling

    Itar-Tass
    Wednesday , January 13th, 2010

Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has urged
power engineering specialists to fix energy failures without delays,
Itar-Tass quotes him saying during a meeting with the regional
development minister, Viktor Basargin, on Monday.

Putin said the country had entered the heating season on time, and
“the national energy suppliers have been working practically
    without failures.”

However, he said, there are certain problems, and they need to be
solved without any delay. Those affected do not care about statistics,
    he remarked.

The country, said Putin, had entered the season in a tougher environment than it was expected.

“In addition to the global warming challenges, we need to
address ‘global cooling’ effects and to do so
    promptly,” he said.

In his opinion Russia has proved prepared for the cold weather better than many Western European countries.

“Yet, our own problems are many, too. Many are due to the
breakdowns of thermal power trunk pipelines. We need to oversee the
process, to promptly react in case of any failure and provide support
for municipalities and regions,” Putin said.

CLIMADIPLOMACY: Visiting American writer Thomas L. Friedman of the
New York Times said “There are too many Americans in the world
today.” But read the entire story LINK and below to see what he
really meant by this remark at a lecture in Taipei City on January 11,

Citing his book Hot, Flat and Crowded, Mr Friedman said the average
global temperature had risen by almost 2ºC since the Industrial
    Revolution.

Flat is Friedman’s metaphor for a world in which more and more
people can live a middle-class American lifestyle, have their jobs and
    drive their cars.

  • Human Rights Court Savages UK Stop & Search Terror Powers

Human Rights Court Savages UK Stop & Search Terror Powers 120110stop

Landmark decision clears the way for restoration of privacy, right to protest, photograph unhindered

    Steve Watson
    Prisonplanet.com
    Tuesday, Jan 12, 2010

The use of “counter-terrorism” stop and search laws by the police in the UK has been ruled illegal by the European Court of Human Rights,
a decision that paves the way for protesters, photographers and
everyday citizens to fight back against such gross invasions of privacy.

Under section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000, police can stop and search anyone without reasonable suspicion.

The court in Strasbourg has referred to that power as not in
“accordance with the law”, and a violation of article eight
    – the right to respect for private and family life.

Judges noted that there is no grounds for considering the powers
“necessary”, and that they are only
“expedient”, adding that there is a “clear risk of
arbitrariness in granting such broad discretion” to a police
    officer.

They also stated that the searching clothing and belongings
interferes with the right to privacy as it involves an element of
    humiliation and embarrassment.

The use of the powers and their authorisation is “neither
sufficiently circumscribed, nor subject to adequate legal safeguards
against abuse”, according to the court.

The court also highlighted a lack of judicial oversight, stating
“The absence of any obligation on the part of the officer to show
a reasonable suspicion made it almost impossible to prove that the
    power had been improperly exercised”.

The full judgment is online here.

The freedom stripping powers, which were initially conceived only to
be used in emergency situations, have come under intense scrutiny
recently following the publication of multiple sets of figures
highlighting huge increases in stops with a relatively miniscule
    success rate.

In May 2009, data released to the BBC
revealed that the Metropolitan Police in London used section 44 of the
Terrorism Act more than 170,000 times in 2008 to stop people in the
capital. That figure equated to stopping and searching a member of the
public every three minutes under terrorism laws.

The figures represented a more than 140% increase on 2007 numbers.

Of all the stops in 2008, only 65 led to arrests for terror
offences, a success rate of just 0.035%. Furthermore, when you take
into account how many of those arrests have translated into
convictions, according to the Home Office, you come up with a round
    figure of 0.0%.

A separate Freedom of Information Act request in 2009 also revealed
that the use of the stop and search power has increased exponentially
by over ten times in less than ten years.

    Furthermore, Ministry of Justice statistics,
published in mid 2008, revealed that from 2006-2007 police used their
powers to stop (but not search) nearly two million members of the
public and demand they account for their behavior or actions, a rise of
one third from the previous year.

This meant that in just one year around 3.5% of the entire British
population was stopped in the street by the police under suspicion of
    terror related offences.

While not resulting in the prevention of any terrorism,
the section 44 powers have been most notably used against the
82-year-old Walter Wolfgang for heckling Jack Straw at the Labour Conference; Sally Cameron for walking on a cycle-path in Dundee; the 80-year-old John Catt for being caught on CCTV passing a demonstration in Brighton; the 11-year-old Isabelle Ellis-Cockcroft for accompanying her parents to an anti-nuclear protest; and a cricketer on his way to a match over his possession of a bat.

    More recently, Scotland Yard admitted
that its officers have been photographing children who are stopped and
searched, even after they have been found to be innocent, and keeping
the pictures on a database for “intelligence-gathering
    purposes”.

In the past we have reported on instances where police have admitted stop and search records are permanently retained.

Human Rights Court Savages UK Stop & Search Terror Powers 060509terror3 The Home Office guide to stop and search states that “if they don’t find anything, your details will be recorded for monitoring purposes, and you’ll be allowed to go.”

The government has continued to push for greater stop and search powers for police.

Section 44 of the Terrorism Act bestows exceptional
powers on the police to stop and search at random, once a particular
geographical area has been designated by a chief officer as one that
might be targeted by terrorists and authorised as such by the Home
Secretary. The government has since extended this power
to stop and search WITHOUT REASONABLE SUSPICION to include
“troubled areas”, which since 2001 has included the whole
    of Greater London.

As of February 17 2009, Section 76 of the Counter Terrorism Act
also prohibits photographing police and permits the arrest of anyone
found “eliciting, publishing or communicating information”
relating to members of the armed forces, intelligence services and
police officers, which is “likely to be useful to a person
committing or preparing an act of terrorism”.

Essentially, under anti-terror laws, anyone caught photographing
police could face a fine or a prison sentence of up to 10 years.

    As we have recently reported,
this section of the act is being used primarily to target journalists
covering protests, who say they are being targeted by police
surveillance officers more so than the actual protesters. The law has
also been used against tourists snapping pictures of landmarks and
members of the public documenting police misconduct.

A recent report by the Joint Select Committee on Human Rights confirmed that journalists and protesters were the primary targets of increased police misuse of anti-terror laws.

This week’s ruling from the Human Rights Court
refers to the case of Kevin Gillan and Pennie Quinton who were detained
for attending a protest outside Europe’s biggest arms fair in London in September 2003.

Having finally achieved justice after more than six
years of pursuing the matter, the pair were awarded €33,850
(£30,400) in costs and expenses. Gillan and Quinton, who like
many others could have just walked away, should be commended as heroes
for their efforts to defend freedom in the UK.

Anti-terror laws are intended for use on the general
public, they always have been, and now we are seeing the rotten fruits
of continued blind acceptance contaminate every section of society in
    this country.

  • U.S. Chamber warns of ‘double-dip’ recession because of Dem policies

    Ian Swanson
    The Hill
    Tuesday, January 12, 2009

U.S. Chamber of Commerce President Tom Donohue warned the U.S. faces
a double-dip recession because of the taxes and regulations under
consideration by the Democratic Congress and President Barack Obama.

“Congress, the administration and states must recognize that
our weak economy simply could not sustain all the new taxes,
regulations and mandates now under consideration. It’s a
sure-fire recipe for a double-dip recession, or worse,” Donohue
said in a speech providing the Chamber’s outlook for 2010.

Donohue said the lawmakers should not let former President George W.
Bush’s tax cuts expire at the end of year and lambasted
Democratic efforts on healthcare and financial regulatory reform as
    well as climate change.

If the tax cuts are allowed to expire, “we will likely end up
with even bigger deficits and greater economic misery,” Donohue
    said.

  • New York Fed Faces House Subpoena Over AIG Bailout

    Hugh Son
    Bloomberg News
    Tuesday, January 12, 2009

Jan. 12 (Bloomberg) — The Federal Reserve Bank of New York
will be compelled to hand over documents related to American
International Group Inc.’s government bailout after a House
oversight committee chairman said he will issue a subpoena.

“To help the committee’s investigation of payments made
by AIG to its counterparties, I am issuing a subpoena today to the
Federal Reserve Bank of New York,” Edolphus Towns, the New York
Democrat who runs the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said
in an e-mailed statement. “This subpoena will provide the
committee with documents that will shed light on how and why taxpayer
dollars were used for a backdoor bailout.”

Towns’ attempt to force the New York Fed to provide documents
comes after the ranking Republican on the committee, Darrell Issa of
California, obtained e-mails showing the regulator pushed AIG to
withhold information from public filings about payments to banks. The
New York Fed in November declined to provide some documents Issa was
seeking without a subpoena, Issa said in a letter to Towns today.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who was president of the New
York Fed when AIG was rescued, had been asked by Towns to testify
during hearings scheduled for next week. The New York Fed’s
general counsel, Thomas Baxter, said last week that Geithner
wasn’t aware of efforts to limit New York-based AIG’s
bailout disclosures because he didn’t think the issue merited
    Geithner’s attention.

UPDATE: The man who heckled Bush has now received a treatening visit
from the Secret Service, who left after he started recording them.

Wanted to make you all aware that I was just visited by the Secret
    Service.

I stupidly opened the door, but then closed and locked it and told
them I’d be right back with them. Then I put a tape in my camera and
started to record. They told me they can’t talk on camera and left.

Thought you all should know in case I go missing, etc.

    SINCERELY,

  • Obama’s TSA Nominee Targets Anti-Government Christians

Former FBI agent Southers says government should pay attention to political Americans

Obamas TSA Nominee Targets Anti Government Christians 120110top

    Paul Joseph Watson
    Prison Planet.com
    Tuesday, January 12, 2010

President Obama’s nominee to head the TSA and
boss the naked body scanners now being installed at airports across the
country says that white Christian “anti-government” types
will be the primary target of suspicion for authorities.

Former FBI agent Erroll Southers has been under
scrutiny following Republican efforts to block his confirmation after
it emerged Southers had abused his power to run a database check on his
    ex-wife’s new boyfriend.

Back in October, Southers told the Senate Homeland
Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and the Commerce, Science
and Transportation Committee, both of whom voted on his confirmation,
that he carried out the search because he was concerned for his wife
and son. However, after the committees had approved him, Southers
admitted that he had lied under oath by failing to reveal that he had
personally conducted the search and had done so on more than one
occasion, as well as sharing the information with the police (so they
could harass the target of the search, according to the Ace of Spades blog).

Given that the potential future head of the TSA has
abused his power in the past and then lied about it to Congress while
under oath, how can we have any confidence that he will change the
climate of corruption and thuggishness that pervades the TSA, as
stories of innocent people being terrorized and harassed continue to appear on an almost daily basis?

In a video interview posted to You Tube yesterday,
Southers states the the government and the TSA has to “pay
attention” not to Muslim terrorists but to
“anti-government, anti-abortion, survivalist types” who are
“christian identity oriented,” before he links such
individuals with neo-nazi white supremacists and people like Buford
Furrow, a former Aryan Nations member who killed one and injured three
during a shooting at the Los Angeles Jewish Community Center in August
    1999.

Southers subsequently throws in Ben Smith, a spree
killer who targeted members of racial and ethnic minorities in random
drive-by shootings in Illinois and Indiana in July 1999.

“Those groups are groups that claim to be
extremely anti-government and christian identity oriented,” added
    Southers.

As we have exhaustively documented for years, even if
there were hordes of Muslim terrorists planning to bomb airliners, the
federal government is far more concerned with what politically active
conservative and libertarian Americans are up to.

    An infamous leaked report
distributed by the Missouri Information Analysis Center last year
listed Ron Paul supporters, libertarians, people who display bumper
stickers, people who own gold, or even people who fly a U.S. flag and
equated them with radical race hate groups and terrorists.

The 2009 Virginia Terrorism Threat Assessment,
produced by the Virginia Fusion Center, smeared anyone who is
    “anti-government,” “anti-abortion,” as
potential terrorists, equated people who enjoy rifle shooting practice
and hunting with terrorists, and demonized the use of the Internet and
websites like You Tube, Fark and Slashdot as terrorist tools. The use
of “e-protests” is also talked about in the context of
    terrorism.

The document also discusses “special interest
groups” who “incorporate a political message” in its
section about domestic terrorists, which could be defined as any mildly
    political organization whatsoever.

These are just two of a plethora of similar police and federal government reports
stretching back well over a decade that identify politically active
Americans as domestic terrorists and a target of domestic authorities.

Unless Southers’ ambitions to head up the TSA are
stopped, incidents of TSA thugs harassing libertarians and
conservatives at airports, such as the case where a Ron Paul treasurer was interrogated for carrying cash and campaign information, will only become more prevalent.

  • Why the Fed Likes Independence

    Ron Paul
    Campaign For Liberty
    Tuesday , January 12th, 2010

Last week it was revealed that when Treasury Secretary
Tim Geithner was Chairman of the New York Federal Reserve, he urged AIG
officials not to disclose to the Securities Exchange Commission
relevant details of agreements with banks to bail out Goldman Sachs.
Apparently he felt at the time that regulators and the public would be
angry that taxpayer money was used to fully compensate bankers who made
some horrifically bad investment decisions. These banks should have
suffered the consequences of the huge risks they were taking. After
all, they kept plenty of rewards when times were good. Instead, the Fed
found a way to socialize these major losses so these banks could
survive and continue making more bad decisions, at the expense of the
American people and the value of the dollar.

Geithner claims that they had to take politically unpopular actions
to save the economy from collapse. Half of that is right — it was
politically unpopular, but it is extremely premature at best, to claim
the economy has been saved. It was just reported that 85,000 more jobs
in December. Unemployment stands at 10 percent officially, and 22
percent according to more traditional calculations. It is hard to argue
that this sort of government waste has done anything but harm to our
economy. Raiding Main Street to bail out Wall Street is a foolish idea.
Main Street productivity and the strength of the dollar is the bedrock
of the economy. You cannot gut this foundation without eventually
toppling everything else. This is what too many policy makers either
don’t understand or refuse to face. Or even worse, perhaps they
    do understand, but don’t care!

In any case, this revelation makes precisely my point about the need
for Fed transparency. This claim that the Fed should have
“independence” is a canard. They very much enjoy their
comfortable pattern of bailing out friends and devaluing the currency
with no oversight and no accountability. Geithner specifically asked
officials at AIG not to disclose to the SEC or to the public
particulars about this special deal for his friends. We only know these
details now because AIG was eventually forthcoming when Congress
    demanded some answers.

We should be getting this information, and information on all such
dealings, straight from the Fed. The Fed should be accountable to
Congress because it is a creature of Congress. The Constitution gives
Congress the authority to oversee the integrity of the monetary unit.
We have unwisely and unconstitutionally delegated this authority to the
Federal Reserve, which has in turn devalued our dollar by 95 percent
and counting. When the Federal Reserve engages in harmful policies,
Congress is still ultimately responsible. If the Fed is not made
accountable through a GAO audit at least, it will continue to be
accountable to no one, and that is unacceptable.

Geithner expects to be praised and thanked for his actions instead
of rebuked and fired. He expects to be given more power to engage in
“experimental” monetary policy in the future. But he has
just given us a very good idea of what the Fed and Treasury would do
with more power, what they consider good monetary policy, and why they
    like their so-called independence.

  • Dodd: Health reform bill ‘hanging by a thread’

    Ron Brynaert
    Raw Story
    Tuesday , January 12th, 2010

On his way out the door, retiring Senator Chris Dodd (D-Conn) has
some bad news for health reform advocates still cheering the late
    December Senate vote.

“Health care reform is ‘hanging on by a thread,’
and one or two votes could determine the outcome of the heavily-debated
bill, Democratic Sen. Chris Dodd told CNBC Monday,” the cable business news network reports.

Dodd said you would have to be “living on the moon” not
to know what senators have already gone on the record with having
issues with the plan, citing Nebraska’s Ben Nelson,
Connecticut’s Joe Lieberman and Senator Blanche Lincoln from
    Arkansas.

“Everyone feels, I guess, to some degree who have been for
this, that they would have liked something different, and that’s
not uncommon when you’re considering an issue of this
    magnitude,” Dodd said.

“If this is all about surviving politically, then we’re
missing the whole purpose of what we’re supposed to be
    doing,” Dodd added.

Dodd said he admired President Obama for taking health reform on,
and that doing nothing would “strangle” the economy.

The National Review’s Corner quotes a “senior GOP Senate staffer” responding to Dodd:

Sounds like there is a full-scale operation underway to
convince liberals: Unite, you have nothing to lose but your principles.
They’re working over the progressive caucus, Big Labor, and other
Lefty groups to convince them that a bad bill is better than no bill.
They have no margin for error, so they’re doing everything they
can to unite groups who dislike the bill.

Video of Dodd’s CNBC interview can be viewed at this link.

  • Organic Farmers Must Embrace GM Crops Says Scientist

    ‘The organic movement
should overcome its hostility to genetically modified crops and embrace
the contribution that they can make to sustainable farming, one of the
world’s leading agricultural scientists has told The Times.
    Although
organic farmers are among the most implacable opponents of genetic
engineering, it should be accepted as legitimate, according to Gordon
Conway, Professor of International Development at Imperial College
London and a former government adviser.

    In an interview with The
Times, he said that the ban on organic farmers using GM crops was based
on an excessively rigid rejection of synthetic approaches to farming
and a misconception that natural ways were safer and more environment-
    friendly than man-made ones.’
