  • Preliminary list of HTC devices set to receive the Android 4.3 update is unleashed in the wild

    htc-43update-main

Google hasn’t quite announced its next Android version just yet, but that isn’t stopping big-name manufacturers from working behind the scenes to ensure which of its devices will likely make the cut and get the next coveted update. Thanks to the leaked preliminary list you see above, it’s looking like HTC already has an idea of which of its devices will see which of its devices will see Android 4.3 and others that well… won’t see Android 4.3. For the most part, it looks like owners many of the flagship devices released in the last 15 or so months should expect to see the next version of Android. This means that all of you HTC One X, One X+, HTC Butterfly (Droid DNA) and of course HTC One owners can go ahead and breathe a sigh of relief.

On the flipside, HTC One S and Verizon Desire owners are probably going to be out of luck— though there’s a chance that HTC will possibly update its guidance and figure that the those devices can handle Android 4.3 after all.

  • Blue and red variants of the HTC One smartphone are on the way and will arrive in the coming months

    HTC_One_Red

And while we’re on the topic of the HTC One finally appearing on more retail outlets, it appears that we have some additional colors of the device on the way as well. Pocket-lint claims that inside sources confirmed that blue and red variants of the smartphone are on the way and will arrive in the coming months, joining the already existing silver and black variants of the smartphone. Considering that we’ve already seen the red variant of the smartphone, this new tidbit of news shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise really— though we’re hoping HTC doesn’t tease us for too long and will unleash the new colors sooner rather than later.

There’s no word yet on what storage capacity the new colors will come in, nor do we have an idea of how much each will cost– but we’ll be sure to give you all the deets as we hear them.

  • HTC rumored to only release a limited number of One Google Edition units for the general public

    HTC_One_Back_HTC_Logo_TA

So now that the HTC One Google Edition is very likely on the way, it’s only natural that HTC will be prepared to accommodate the presumably high demand and avoid various shipping problems by unleashing a boatload of Google Edition units, right? As Lee Corso would say, “not so fast my friends”— it appears that HTC will be releasing only a limited number of units for the general public. As indicated by an unknown Pocket-lint source, HTC will unleash “around 1 per cent of total sales of the device so far”— so if total sales are at 5,000,000+ units so far, then we should hypothetically expect something like 50,000 One Google Edition units available to the general public. If this is true, then there would almost certainly be some pandemonium for this specialized version of the device– which may or may not be a positive thing for HTC at this time.

Of course there is nothing totally concrete just yet, so we’ll just have to wait and see how everything plays out upon the device’s imminent release.

Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to the X5 smartphone— also known as the world’s thinnest smartphone. This intriguing device is developed by Umeox— a brand that’s quite popular in China, but a fairly relative unknown elsewhere in the world and comes in at 118 x 60 x 5.6mm. The 5.6mm profile effectively makes the device the world’s thinnest smartphone as of this time— taking the title from Huawei’s Ascend P6 for the time being.

Unfortunately, while the device will come in a thin profile, there is little else known about what will be inside of the device— so we don’t know what processor will be used or what type of camera will come with the phone until its July release date. Fortunately— the device will arrive with Jelly Bean loaded up, so that can be a bit of some silver lining for prospective customers out there.

    HTC_One_Back_HTC_Logo_TA

HTC is keeping up the positive momentum in relation to the development of its flagship devices and there’s a new rumor surfacing out there that may continue to keep its competitors on its heels. Reports are coming in that HTC is considering the building of a smartphone with a Liquidmetal casing— which is an alloy nearly resistant to wear and tear. Moreover, HTC would look to keep the possibly use of the material locally by emploring Taiwanese firm Jabon International to provide the Liquidmetal chassis. As of now, Apple is the only manufacturer that has its sights on utilizing this technology in future devices, but the devices wouldn’t appear for a while— meaning HTC could more than certainly have a head start on Apple by introducing Liquidmetal-based devices as early as the second half of 2013.

  • LG confirms it’s not working on new Nexus device… for now at least

    lg-logo-3598

We may see the Nexus 4 as a resounding success, but it appears that LG is possibly throwing in the towel when it comes to the future development for Nexus devices— well for now at least. Contrary to what we’ve heard before, LG Europe Vice President Won Kim asserts “the Nexus 4 was a great success despite the production problems for us and Google… However we do not need such a marketing success again“. Additionally, Kim argues that there is no need for the release of a flagship device with stock Android build in. When posed the question regarding the freshly announced Samsung Galaxy S 4 Google Edition smartphone, Kim is blunt in his thoughts about that type of device by arguing LG has ”no plans to provide our devices like Samsung has now done. This has no added value for us without our own skins“.

So does this mean that LG has its eyes on refining and developing its own unique devices? Not necessarily folks. While speaking with The Next Web, an LG spokesperson confirmed “what Mr. Won Kim said is that we are not currently working on a Nexus 5, which is true. But that doesn’t mean we would turn down the opportunity“. So in essence, there is a possibility that while they aren’t working on the next Nexus device, it doesn’t mean that we’ll never see a future LG-based Nexus device ever again. After all, LG certainly doesn’t want to see its competitors claw back into the hearts of the masses again, right?

Fortunately, it appears that we’re finally getting some long-awaited information about the venerable device as news has surfaced that it’ll not only arrive this summer with high expectations, but it will come with a brand-new display unit. According to the hit-or-miss Digitimes, Google and ASUS are turning to AU Optronics (AUO) to develop a 7-inch, low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) panel at a 1,900 x 1,200 resolution. • Google quietly working on the inclusion of haptic feedback technology into Android devices… for more effective advertisements

    Google_tactile_feedback

At the end of the day, Google is first and foremost, a company driven by advertisements, not necessarily awesome Android sales. Considering Google has one heck of a track record when it comes to how advertisements are  subtly stuffed down our throats viewed by the masses, it should come as no surprise that Google is out to revolutionize how we consume ads thanks to its work behind the scenes of implementing haptic feedback technology. The USPTO went ahead and published a patent application “Providing information through tactile feedback”, which at its absolute core deals with haptic feedback on touchscreen devices (smartphones and tablets).

Google recognizes this technology is still very much in its infancy, so it’s utilizing its all-star team of researchers and developers to dig deeper and recognize the true potential of haptic feedback, by quietly working on a “Tactile Interface Engine“, which allows Google to ensure its ads are more effective thanks to the implementation of feedback. The concept alone is fascinating, but it’s how the technology works that will be a real eye-opener for the masses. Essentially Google would hypothetically separate an advertisement displayed on a webpage with a border by having a distinct tactile feel, which is completely noticeable as the finger approaches the advertisement. In the case of multiple ads, the ad with the “most relevance” would give the most feedback as your finger hovers around it, while the other ads would give less feedback— though each ad could be moved around to a different place on the screen if needed.

It’s too early to tell what sort of impact this implementation will have for the Android brand, but it probably wouldn’t be a surprise if it were to end up being revolutionary. Of course it would be nice to see some improved haptic feedback for our displays (and specifically our keyboards), but any cool innovation from Google would be a welcome one nonetheless. We’ll be sure to keep an eye out for you all on whether or not this intriguing development can eventually become a reality.

It’s no surprise that as the processors for our Android devices get faster, other areas such as the device’s memory get faster as well. That’s why Sandisk has been working behind the scenes on its flash memory technology and recently announced it has begun customer sampling of flash memory products based on its 1Ynm process technology. For those of you not familiar with this technology, Sandisk is able to develop smaller-scale memory cell sizes, allowing for multi-level data storage management schemes which help bring multi-level cell (MLC) NAND flash memory chips— chips that don’t even come close to compromising performance or reliability when used on our devices out there. So the hope is that this brand-new technology will ultimately bring smaller and less circuitry, while simultaneously bringing high capacity memory units at a lower cost. And hey— who wouldn’t want a more efficient and faster microSD card or other flash memory unit?

No word yet on when this technology will hit the general public yet, but hopefully we’ll see it on our devices sooner than later. Hit the break for the full presser from Sandisk.
