Arun Ghandi grew up during apartheid in South Africa and was often beaten up by both black and white children. Frustrated with the bullying, he turned to bodybuilding magazines and intense exercise, hoping to somehow be strong enough to fight back. His parents, seeing this, sent him to India, where he spent 18 months with his grandfather, Mahatma Ghandi, as he led the people of India in a nonviolent struggle for independence from Great Britain.

Arun Ghandi came to the U.S. in 1987 to do a comparative study on racism. In 1991, he and his late wife founded the M.K. Ghandi Institute for Nonviolence, which is now headquartered at the University of Rochester, New York. Ghandi has spoken internationally and is committed to spreading an understanding of nonviolence and peace.
