    02.09.10 08:57 AM

Art Spiegelman, the Pulitzer Prize-winning artist, illustrator, and author of the critically acclaimed graphic novels Maus and Maus II, will discuss the evolution of comics and their value as artistic and cultural mediums at 7 p.m. March 4 at the Liberty Theater in Puyallup.

Tickets are $12 for general admission and $5 for Pierce College students. Tickets are available at the Office of Student Life, College Center building, Room 210, Pierce College Puyallup, 1601 39th Ave. SE or online at Ticketmaster. Speigelman is best known for his Holocaust narrative, Maus, for which he won a Pulitzer Prize in 1992. The comic portrays Jews as mice and Nazis as cats. He followed it up with Maus II, in which he chronicled his parents’ survival of the Nazi regime and their later life in America.

Spiegelman’s incredibly diverse career includes a decade of writing and illustrating for The New Yorker magazine. He also founded, with his wife, RAW, the avant-garde comics magazine. He has written and illustrated In the Shadow of No Towers, which was selected by The New York Times Book Review as one of the 100 Notable Books of 2004.

Spiegelman’s lecture, What the %@&*! Happened to Comics?, is presented by the Pierce College Puyallup Office of Student Life as part of the 2009-10 Artists and Speakers Series.

  • CSUN-al Gardening Series Goes ‘Crazy for TOMATOES!’

    02.08.10 11:12 AM

Tomato growing is a favorite annual event for many Southern California home gardeners. And when you consider the great number of varieties available, it’s no wonder that tomato gourmands look forward to planting their tomato seedlings.

But what’s the best approach for preparing the soil and caring for plants? Do different varieties require special fertilizer blends or watering schedules? Scott Daigre, proprietor of Tomatomania!, will answer those questions and more at Cal State Northridge’s next CSUN-al Gardening Series, “Crazy for TOMATOES!,” scheduled for Saturday, March 6, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the university.

“Tomatoes are often the first food plant that children grow in school,” said Brenda Kanno, manager of CSUN’s Botanic Garden. “With the many varieties that are available in different colors, sizes and shapes, tomatoes offer tasty and nutritious rewards to the home gardener.”

Daigre is owner of PowerPlant Garden Design and the annual Tomatomania! event in Encino. His garden designs have been featured on DIY and HGTV programs.

Registration for the class began Saturday, Feb. 6. While the class is free, registration is required. To register, please e-mail [email protected] to request a space in the class.

Driving and parking instructions, as well the classroom location, will be sent with confirmation of registration. The same e-mail address may also be used for questions about the class.

The Cal State Northridge Botanic Garden is operated by the Department of Biology and serves as a field site for botany, entomology, photography, painting and other classes. In addition to geographically themed plantings and a butterfly garden, there are greenhouses where noteworthy botanical specimens are grown.
The garden is open to the community. Visit the Botanic Garden Web site at www.csun.edu/botanicgarden for more information.

  • Intense. Personal. Life-changing: Pierce College Theatre presents “K2” Feb. 17-20

    02.05.10 08:35 AM

Witness the struggle of two men stranded on the world’s tallest peak in the Pierce College Theatre production of “K2,” a thrilling show that will have audiences captivated.

“K2” runs at 7 p.m. Feb. 17-20 at the BlackBox Theater at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom, 9401 Farwest Drive SW, Lakewood. Tickets are $5 general admission or $2 for Pierce students, military personnel, and seniors. For tickets, call the Ticket Line at (253) 964-6710.

"K2" runs Feb. 17-20. Tickets are now available.

Actors David de Rouen and Andrew Myrick have been training with the Tacoma and Seattle Mountaineers, learning the basics of mountain climbing and experiencing first-hand the thrills and fears of such a dangerous sport. The actors were able to climb an ice wall and feel what their characters may have felt in the play.

“The kinesthetic activity and professional training gave the actors a better understanding of what it’s like to be a mountaineer,” explained Director Patrick Daugherty.

In addition, one of the actors will be wearing the actual climbing gear worn by famed local climber Stan Engle when he summated Alaska’s Mt. McKinley. Engle passed away in March, but his legacy in the local climbing community is profound. The equipment was graciously loaned to Pierce College by Engle’s wife, Helen Engle.

The new theater is intimate, so purchasing tickets early is recommended.

  • Teacher of “The Secret” to Speak at CSUN

    02.02.10 04:13 PM

With a brand new semester afoot and economic gloom looming overhead, the community is invited to join Cal State Northridge faculty, staff and students for “An Evening of Inspiration with Michael B. Beckwith.”

The event, hosted by the University Student Union (USU), is scheduled to take place on Monday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. in the Northridge Center in the USU. The USU is located on the west side of campus located at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.

Though the event is open to the public, priority seating will be given to CSUN faculty, staff and students.

“Michael Beckwith’s teachings have transformed millions of people’s lives around the world including my own,” said Piero Procida, former USU board of directors chair. “This inspired me to bring him to CSUN so that the students here can also find peace in a world that is consumed in money worries, turmoil, and stress.”

Michael Beckwith is the founder and spiritual director of the Agape International Spiritual Center in Los Angeles. He is the author of the award-winning “Spiritual Liberation – Fulfilling Your Soul’s Potential,” “The Answer is You” and “A Manifesto of Peace.” Beckwith has received numerous humanitarian awards as well, including the 2004 African Peace Award, and the Humanitarian Award of the National Conference for Compassion and Justice.

“Beckwith could give a new perspective to students dealing with high tuition or anyone who is dealing with financial issues, and help teach them how to handle these situations in a new light,” said Hamid Jahangard, program coordinator for major events. “When you walk away from this lecture you should walk away motivated and inspired, and feel that you could overcome your challenges.”

Beckwith was a featured teacher in the best-selling book and film, “The Secret,” and has appeared on The Oprah Show and Larry King Live. His first PBS special, “The Answer is YOU,” is currently being aired nationally.

“After reading his book ‘Spiritual Liberation,’ I was able to take a step back and see life for what it really is,” Procida said. “I learned how well the Law of Attraction works and how the application of his teachings can make your life work for you and not against you.”

Tickets are free for CSUN students, faculty and staff with an ID at the Associated Students ticket office. There will be a stand-by line the night of the event for non-ticket holders and community members without a CSUN ID.

For more information call the USU at (818) 677-2491 or visit their Web site at usu.csun.edu/events.
