  • Cops Kill Teen Gunman in Brooklyn

The local ABC affiliate in New York City is reporting that a teenager in Brooklyn was gunned down by police after he pulled a gun on two officers in Brooklyn.

The report states that on Saturday, March 9, two plain-clothed officers in an unmarked car who are part of the Brooklyn South anti-crime unit accosted a group of young men on 52nd street. One of the teens then began acting suspicious and the officers approached him. According to police, the 16-year-old then pulled a .38 caliber revolver and pointed it at the officers, who opened fire using their weapons. The teen, identified in the ABC report as Kimani Gray, later died at Kings County Hospital.

The NYPD has not released the names of the officers involved in the shooting, and has said it is continuing to investigate the incident. Police stated that the gun the teen allegedly pointed at police, which was loaded, was recovered at the scene of the incident, but it is unclear whether the teen fired it at the officers.

  • New Batman Mythology is Coming to Comics

The Associated Press is reporting that Batman will be getting some new backstory in an upcoming story arc to be written by Scott Snyder.

Though key elements of Bruce Wayne’s past will not be changed (his parents will still have been murdered) the character’s growth from Bruce Wayne to Batman will receive a makeover. The 11-part story will detail Bruce Wayne’s first encounter with a super villain and show him building the bat cave. It will also reveal a new story on how the character eventually donned the now-famous Batman costume. The story arc will be called “The Zero year.”

Snyder told the AP that he and other DC Comics writers “tried to preserve as much of Batman’s history as we could.” He also mentioned that DC is “not going to take apart ‘Year One,” referring to Frank Miller’s 1987 Batman story that recounts Batman’s early crime fighting. Many of the elements from that story were used by Christopher Nolan in the most recent Batman film adaptations, including Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

“The Zero Year” will begin as Robin, the Boy Wonder, has been killed off in the comic Batman Incorporated. The most current Robin was the son of Bruce Wayne, suggesting that, perhaps, the introspection of “The Zero Year” will shape Batman as a character going forward.

  • 6 Teens Kiled In Crash in Northeast Ohio

The Associated Press is reporting that six Ohio teens, five boys and one girl, died when the SUV they were riding in careened over a guardrail just south of Warren, Ohio.

The report states that eight teens had taken the vehicle without permission. Though all eight of the teens were from Warren, the vehicle is registered to a person who lives in the nearby city of Youngstown, Ohio.

At around 7 am the SUV hit a guardrail and flipped over into a pond. Five of the teens were inside and one was thrown from the vehicle during the crash and later found underneath the SUV. Two of the teens were able to escape the wreck and run to a nearby residence to call 911. The age of the teens ranged from 14 to 19 years old.

Police told the AP that “speed was a factor,” but that speculation about alcohol or drug use would wait until toxicology reports are complete.

The AP report states that counseling was provided by city officials Sunday night at a school that some of the teens had attended. Many of the teens’ family members and friends expressed shock and disbelief while also questioning what the teens were doing out at the time of the accident.

  • Nathan Safferstein Dies; Manhattan Project Worker was 92

The Associated Press is reporting that Nathan Safferstein, a counterintelligence agent for the Manhattan Project, has died.

Safferstein’s family told the AP that he died Tuesday, March 5 at his home in the Bronx. He had been suffering from an unnamed illness for some time.

As part of the program centered around creating the atomic bomb, Safferstein was trusted with some of the Manhattan Projects’ most precious secrets. The AP report states that Safferstein eavesdropped on Los Alamos laboratory scientists to ensure they weren’t leaking secrets about the program. He was also tasked with transporting sensitive material, such as uranium and top-secret messages.

Safferstein was reportedly a grocery store manager before being recruited into the Manhattan Project and stationed at Los Alamos. He followed the project all the way to the Pacific theater, where he was able to sign his initials to the atomic bomb dropped in Hiroshima. After the war, Safferstein returned to grocery store work. He went on to become president of a marketing company and later founded two companies.

  • What Will Mobile Bring to Consumers and Marketers in 2013?

The mobile landscape is set to change in a big way in 2013, and though some of the coming changes can be predicted, others will provide big (and perhaps unwelcome) surprises for both consumers and advertisers.

As seen at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and Mobile World Congress, tech companies are focusing more than ever on smartphone and tablet devices. Companies such as Sony, LG, Asus, and even HP unveiled new devices that will enter a market already largely controlled by the likes of Apple, Samsung, and Amazon.

What mobile devices do you intend to acquire this year? Let us know in the comments.

What is somewhat surprising is that many of these companies might actually have a chance, considering how quickly the mobile industry is growing. On March 4, ABI research estimated that mobile users will download 14 billion tablet apps during 2013. Almost three-quarters of those apps will be running on a iPad device, but Android devices are now set to lead in the number of smartphone app downloads, which ABI predicts will reach 56 billion in 2013.

For consumers the proliferation of more devices with a wider variety of features could mean confusion and burnout. It also means that consumers have never had more choice, and more power, than they do now. The choices they make this year about the devices they purchase and the technologies they adopt will shape the technology landscape for years to come.

Apple stock has had a rough winter, in no small part to the Apple Maps debacle and the fact that the iPhone 5 failed to iterate significantly on the device’s past models. While Android devices are introducing larger smartphones, NFC technology, wireless charging, and features such as water resistance, Apple’s credibility as a innovator in the market segment it created is shrinking.

As Apple now begins to follow industry trends with the iPad mini and a less expensive version of the iPhone, Samsung is poised to become a market leader. The Korean company will unveil its latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S IV at an Apple-like announcement in New York on March 14. Samsung’s hefty manufacturing capabilities and willingness to mimic Apple have propelled it to the forefront of Android smartphones, but the company’s new marketing (another thing it has taken directly from Apple’s playbook) is also beginning to become part of the cultural zeitgeist.

The mobile market right now might be considered tablets and smartphones, but later this year Google will introduce a completely new type of mobile product with Google Glass. Though the device’s success is far from certain, it could introduce an entirely new mobile category, propelling the industry forward with even more constant connectivity. Glass’ ability to record on the fly also brings privacy concerns, meaning laws and social norms will be further tested by advancing technology.

With all of these changes coming to the mobile space, it’s worth considering how advertisers will adapt. While having consumers constantly connected and consuming content may seem preferable for advertisers, the abundance of that content can make it difficult for ad campaigns to target their audience. At the same time, the abundance of content and metrics can put consumers in control of much of the advertising they see.

As Susan Wojcicki, senior VP of advertising at Google, recently put it in a Google Plus post, “We are living in uncharted territory.”

Wojcicki argues that as always-connected devices continue to proliferate, advertising will quickly move into a “choice-based economy” where users will be able to control the content and ads that they see. She writes that “ads views will effectively become voluntary.”

It’s not hard to imagine how advertisers will have to adapt in that type of ad economy. Choice-based ad models will have to cater to consumers at an individual level with adaptability and engage customers in nearly the same way that content itself does. Wojcicki suggests that future technologies will provide more “interactive and beautiful” ads, but that’s only the beginning of how mobile advertising will change in the coming years.

Accepting that consumers are no longer a captive audience for ads may be a terrifying prospect for both advertisers and content creators, but consumer choice is only continuing to increase. This could make solid advertising opportunities more expensive, but also means that brands will have to adapt their ad techniques to grow a fan base or to provide upfront value to consumers.

How do you think advertising should adapt to consumer choice? Tell us your ideas in the comments.

As the nature of mobile advertising changes, how advertisers measure the impact of their campaigns will have to change as well. Wojcicki puts it bluntly by stating advertisers will have to develop “standards beyond the click.” However, it’s hard to predict just how those measurements will be made in the future, particularly in light of the growing backlash from privacy advocates.

Wojcicki stated that Google is beginning to to roll out surveys to provide advertisers with a way to measure the performance of their display and video campaigns. Google’s skippable “TrueView” ads are also now integrated into mobile AdMob apps, allowing consumers to decide for themselves what ads they will view.

As the future of the mobile industry finally begins to take shape this year, consumers have never had more choices with regards to hardware, software, and services. However, the plethora of choices thrown at consumers can also create confusion, and will inevitably lead to a few trusted brands leading the way. While advertisers attempt to pare down consumers’ choices for them, future technologies, such as Google Glass, will continue to continue to change the way people interact with technology and their environment.

  • NORAD Evacuated Over Suspicious Packages

The Associated Press is reporting that the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) headquarters near Colorado Springs was evacuated for around four and a half hours on Thursday. The evacuation of around 1,500 people took place because of five “suspicious” or “out of place” packages that were found at the site.

Personnel were called in to examine the packages and determined they were not filled with any potentially harmful substances. UPI later reported that military dogs were brought in to stiff the packages, which were subsequently moved to another location.

According to UPI, when officials finally opened the package they found only “office supplies.” NORAD stated that its essential operations were not disrupted by the event, and that the control room team was able to operate at a nearby backup location.

NORAD is a joint organization that provides aerospace defense for the U.S. and Canada. The Royal Canadian Air Force and the U.S. Air Force use the facility to coordinate aerospace warning systems and air sovereignty throughout North America.

  • Ex-Chicago Bear Charged For Tax Evasion

The Associated Press is reporting that former NFL player Chris Zorich has been charged for tax evasion. The football player has allegedly not filed federal income tax returns for “over four years.”

Zorich played for Notre Dame in college and was an All-American before being drafted to the NFL in 1991. He played for the Chicago Bears until 1997, and then capped off his NFL career with one year with the Washington Redskins in 1997. Zorich was a member of the 1988 Notre Dame football team that went undefeated and won the National Championship.

An attorney for Zorich told the AP that he would be pleading guilty to four misdemeanor counts for not filing tax returns between 2006 and 2009. Each misdemeanor count has a maximum one year prison sentence and $100,000 fine. The former athlete is alleged to have made over $1 million during that time, including income from the Christopher Zorich Foundation, a charity he founded in 1993 to help disadvantaged families.

In 2010, the Chicago Tribune reported that over $850,000 was missing from the Christopher Zorich Foundation, and that the organization had not filed taxes since 2003. Late last year, Zorich agreed to pay nearly $350,000 in unaccounted-for funds back to his charity after an Illinois Attorney General investigation.

  • Charlize Theron Could Start a Denim Clothing Line [RUMOR]

Charlize Theron is pretty good at keeping her private life private. Last we heard from her, baseless rumors in September 2012 were insinuating that she was dating Eric Stonestreet of Modern Family fame and in November 2012 the style press began to go crazy over the actresses new buzz-cut look for the upcoming movie Mad Max: Fury Road.

Now, it appears that the South African star may be shifting her focus slightly from acting to fashion. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Theron could soon launch a line of denim clothing.

The report states that Theron and celebrity stylist Leslie Fremar are currently shopping around the idea of a “Theron Jeans” line to denim companies.

Celebrity clothing lines are nothing new or special, but a clothing line from Theron could go to support her Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP), which has the mission of preventing the spread of AIDS among Africa’s youth. The actress recently partnered with clothing brand Toms to create a shoe that supports the CTAOP:

  • Hulk Rumors: No New Hulk Movie in the Works

It’s been hard for Marvel to found a stable Hulk franchise in recent years. A decade ago, Eric Bana filled Bruce Banner’s shoes in Ang Lee’s Hulk, which received mixed reviews. More recently, Edward Norton took a stab at becoming the Hulk, but abandoned the role soon after.

Mark Ruffalo signed on to star as Bruce Banner in last year’s blockbuster The Avengers, and it seems that the actor might be in for the long haul. Unfortunately, that may not mean that Ruffalo will star as the Hulk in an individual movie franchise.

Yesterday Ruffalo revealed through his Twitter feed that there are no current plans for a new Hulk movie, and that the next time he will appear as the character will be in the sequel to The Avengers.

Ruffalo later reemphasized that his statement doesn’t mean there will never be another Hulk movie:

Ruffalo’s tweets back up a comment made by Avengers director Joss Whedon in a recent interview with IGN. Whedon shot down rumors that the next Avengers movie would focus on the Hulk.

  • Denver “Thong Bandit” Still on the Loose

How can you tell if a neighborhood has a low crime rate? The police will be mobilizing officers to search for an exhibitionist.

The NBC affiliate in Denver is reporting that police in the Sloan Lake neighborhood in Denver will soon begin searching for a man they’ve dubbed the “thong bandit.” The man has been “terrorizing” northwest Denver with his nakedness since last summer, but wasn’t active during the winter. Now that the weather in Colorado is turning nice again, police have received new reports of the flasher.

Police say the man will start out fully clothed before ducking into an alley and stripping down to a thong. He then proceeds to “expose himself further” in front of women. The man is reportedly white or hispanic, in his 20s or 30s, and has an “athletic build.” Reports show that he has switched from a pink thong to a black or dark thong in the past.

According to NBC 9, the Denver police are sending teams of officers out to Northwest Denver to search for the flasher. They have a sketch of what the man might look like and have asked citizens to call 911 immediately when they encounter him.

  • Osbourne Seizure: Kelly Osbourne Faints on Set

On afternoon of Thursday, March 7 TMZ reported that Kelly Osbourne had a seizure on the set of her E! Network show Fashion Police. Shortly after, an ambulance arrived and took Osbourne to a nearby L.A. hospital.

Osbourne was reportedly shooting the TV show with a live studio audience at the time of the seizure. The TMZ report states that she told Melissa Rivers that, “I don’t feel good,” before falling to the ground, shaking. Though she regained consciousness soon after, she was still taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Osbourne confirmed late last night through her Twitter feed that she did, indeed have a seizure. Doctors are currently trying to pin down the cause of the emergency.

Osbourne is currently engaged to Matthew Mosshart and the two are planning to marry this summer. Last December Osbourne spoke about her recent 50-pound weight loss, saying, “I made a life change, and the weight loss was an amazing perk.”

  • 100,000 Killer Bees Attack Tampa Park Workers

The ABC New affiliate in Tampa Bay, Florida is reporting that two public park workers were attacked by as many as 100,000 Africanized honeybees – also known as killer bees.

The report states that two park employees were removing a pile of rubbish from Picnic Island Park using a payloader when the attack occurred. The pair flipped over an old tire that hadn’t been moved for years and angered the aggressive bees. One of the workers was stung over 60 times and the other endured more than 100 stings before fleeing into a nearby building.

According to ABC, both of the men were admitted to a local hospital where they were treated with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. Luckily, neither of them seem to have been highly allergic to bee stings.

Africanized bees are an agressive breed of bee that have been spreading north into the U.S. since the early 90s. In addition to being able to take over the hives of western honey bees, killer bees swarm more often and are able to travel further than other bees.

  • Chris Brown “Explodes” at Valet Over $10 Fee

In addition to being a pop music sensation, Chris Brown is infamous for his temper, which led him to beat pop star Rihanna back in 2009. Since that time, other incidents have demonstrated the singer’s inability to control his temper.

Today, TMZ is reporting that Brown had a recent altercation with a valet at an L.A. bowling alley. The report states that Brown was shaken up over a $10 service charge. According to the video below, the parking attendant was witholding the vehicle’s keys until the service charge was paid.

The valet was quickly surrounded, and Brown got very close to the man’s face. In the video, Brown can be heard using strong and threatening language toward the man. Brown obtained his keys seconds later, though it is unclear whether the valet received the $10.

  • Giant Wave Kills Tourist in Mexico

The Associated Press is reporting that a giant wave hit two tourists on a beach in Cabo San Lucas, dragging them out to sea and killing one of them.

A 65-year-old woman was killed by the freak wave, while a 70-year-old man is now in serious condition. The wave struck near the famous El Arco natural arch at the resort community, located at the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula.

The AP report quotes state police as saying the man and woman were walking along the beach to their hotel when the incident occurred. The Navy was dispatched to recuse them, but the woman later died.

Officials have not released the names of either of the victims, though authorities told the AP that the woman was carrying a driver’s license from Wisconsin, while the man was carrying one from Nebraska.

Cabo San Lucas is a popular tourist destination for its beaches. Tourists and cruise ships come to the beach resorts there to scuba dive, watch the abundant marine life, and surf the waves.

  • Bieber Meltdown on Twitter Lashes Out Against “Fake Stories”

Justin Bieber has been having a tough time in London. Stories about the pop star going around London shirtless after a concert and arriving late to another London show because of “diva-like behavior” (including a backstage “tantrum”) began popping up earlier this month.

Now, it appears that Bieber has had enough of the British tabloid culture and is letting them have a piece of his mind via Twitter.

The pop star tweeted out a dozen different tweets on March 6, railing against “rumors,” “fake stories,” and the public judgment he faces on a daily basis.

Here’s the entire rant, in full:

[Author’s comment: Though the language in this next tweet leaves things up to interpretation, it’s worth noting that Bieber is, presumably, referring to religious beliefs and not to a dominant/submissive relationship with another man.]

No doubt Bieber’s 35.5 million Twitter followers will back up his sentiments, if they can manage to figure what his point was. Bieber himself, on the other hand, will have to continue to live under the scrutiny that comes with having the celebrity to garner that many Twitter followers.

  • Hope Solo 911 Call Audio Released

Hope Solo, the Olympic gold medal-winning goalkeeper for the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team, rose to prominence for her goaltending skills, but gained infamy last year after marrying her fiance Jerramy Stevens the day after a violent pre-wedding party incident involving the couple.

Stevens, who has a history of arrests, was arrested the night before the wedding for fourth-degree domestic violence assault, but was released due to lack of evidence. The police report stated that Solo and Stevens had been arguing before a “physical altercation” occurred involving eight people.

This week, the 911 call that night from Solo’s brother, Marcus Solo, has been released. The call reveals that the partygoers had, indeed, been drinking and that a stun gun had been involved in the fight.

For her part, Solo married Stevens just hours later and told the police that the incident was due to “unknown” men at the party. She has maintained since that time that Stevens did not and would not hit her.
