  • Eddie Murphy Gets Beverly Hills Cop TV Show Cameo

It’s been known since last fall that Eddie Murphy is trying to resurrect Beverly Hills Cop as a network TV show. The comedian/actor is producing the show, which will star character Axel Foley’s son.

At the time it was announced, Murphy speculated that Axel Foley would be the chief of police in Detroit and would “show up here and there” in the pilot episode. Now, it has been confirmed that Murphy and his Beverly Hills Cop co-star Judge Reinhold will both make cameos in the TV show’s pilot episode.

Reuters is reporting that Murphy will reprise his role as Axel Foley and Reinhold will again be playing Billy Rosewood, who “has scored a big promotion from his old job.” Brandon T. Jackson, who played Alpa Chino in the 2008 movie Tropic Thunder, will be playing Foley’s son. The pilot is being filmed for CBS.

  • Alvin Lee Dies; Guitarist Was 68

Guitarist Alvin Lee, most famous for playing lead guitar and singing with the band Ten Years After, has died.

According to a Los Angeles Times report, Lee died in Spain on Wednesday, March 6 due to complications from routine surgery.

Lee learned to play guitar as a teenager and formed Ten Years After in 1966. The band found success in England and went on to fame in the U.S. after it played an 11-minute version of its song “I’m Going Home” at the Woodstock music festival in 1969.

After leaving Ten Years After in 1974, Lee went on to record and tour with a variety of famous musicians. In 1973 he and Mylon LeFevre released On the Road to Freedom, and album recorded with guest stars such as George Harrison and Steve Winwood. Lee’s last album, titled Still on the Road to Freedom, was released in September 2012.

  • Russell Crowe UFO Video Leaves Twitter Fans Baffled

Russel Crowe may be scheduled to play Superman’s father, Jor-El, in the upcoming Superman movie reboot Man of Steel, but it wasn’t a flying Kryptonian that Crowe spotted outside his Sydney offices this week.

The actor posted a YouTube video to his Twitter account this week, showing what he claims in a genuine UFO. Crowe stated that he and a friend set up a Cannon 5D outside his office in Sydney to capture images of fruit bats “rising from Botanic Gardens. Instead, three photos taken over 4.5 seconds show something brightly lit passing over the scenery very quickly.

Crowe is technically accurate in that the object in the photos is unidentified and appears to be flying. However, dressing the video up with sinister music and weird editing to imply an alien presence implies that the actor is simply trolling his Twitter followers.

The stunt has gained Crowe some attention on Twitter, though. The star has retweeted various stories about his video and has replied to several fan theories with his own explanations. He even showed that he’s in on the joke by retweeting what is clearly the best explanation for the phenomenon:

  • Stern to Replace Fallon? Late Night Rumors Heat Up

With NBC’s primetime lineup tanking and Jay Leno set to retire from The Tonight Show in 2014, NBC execs must be scrambling to find someone popular to put on TV. Jimmy Fallon is the odds-on favorite to take the Tonight Show reins, but the latest late night NBC programming rumors about who could take Fallon’s place might surprise some.

The New York Post is now reporting that “shock jock” Howard Stern could be taking Fallon’s Place on Late Night. The Post cites an unnamed source “who knows [Stern] well” as saying NBC executives have warmed up to Stern, who is currently a judge on the NBC show America’s Got Talent.

Also, Stern’s wife, Beth Ostrosky Stern, told the newspaper that she would support a move by her husband to late night TV.

Since the retirement of Johnny Carson in 1992, the politics surrounding late night hosting duties at NBC has been fraught with scandal. David Letterman, the host of Late Night with David Letterman at the time, was passed over in favor of Jay Leno. When Jay Leno gave up The Tonight Show in 2009, Conan O’Brien briefly hosted the show before being ousted in favor of Leno taking back control of the show.

  • Demi Divorce Papers Finally Filed

It’s been over one year since Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher officially ended their relationship, but the divorce process for the two celebrities hasn’t been going smoothly.

Today, the New York Post’s Page Six is reporting that Demi Moore will finally file divorce papers against Kutcher. Citing an unnamed “insider,” the Post goes on to say that Moore is “tired” of settlement talks between the couple, and could bring the divorce to court.

Kutcher has already filed divorce papers, and the Post’s source dropped the words “difficult” and “hostile” in relation to his attitude during settlement proceedings.

    From the Post:

“Ashton made a lot of money after marrying Demi – a lot more than she made – but despite him becoming just as famous through her, he believes he doesn’t owe her that much,” the source said,” adding of Demi: “She has had enough.”

The paperwork could be filed as soon as today. If a settlement is not reached by this spring, the source states, it could end up going to trial.

  • Swift Slams Tina Fey For Golden Globes Joke

The Golden Globes may be months behind us, but Taylor Swift is still sore about a jab made at her expense by comedians Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Swift, who’s song “Safe & Sound” lost to Adele’s “Skyfall” for best original song at the awards show, was mocked by the two hosts over her many publicized relationships.

“You know what Taylor Swift, you stay away from Michael J. Fox’s son,” said Fey, feigning drunkenness on-stage at the Globes. Sam Fox was serving as Mr. Golden Globes for the award ceremony.

Poehler suggested that perhaps Swift should “just go for it,” but Fey countered that the pop star “needs some ‘me’ time to learn about herself.”

Now, in a new interview with Vanity Fair, Swift reveals that she resents the picture of her that is presented in tabloid magazines. She claims the magazines will “turn you into a fictional character,” which is presumably what Fey and Poehler were basing their joke on.

Swift told Vanity Fair that Fey’s joke reminded her of something Katie Couric had told her: “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.”

Both Poehler and Fey have responded to Swift’s comment. Poehler told The Hollywood Reporter that she feels bad if Swift was upset, and “That being said, I do agree I am going to hell.” Fey told Entertainment Tonight that it was a “lighthearted joke” and that other jokes she made that night had more punch.

  • ‘Paul Bearer’ Dies; Wrestling Star Was 58

Paul Bearer, born as William Moody, has died at the age of 58. Though the cause of Bearer’s death is unknown, TMZ is reporting that he had suffered from health problems related to his obesity and gallbladder for years.

Bearer made a name for himself in WWE (then WWF) wrestling as the manager of The Undertaker, and sometimes Undertaker’s “brother,” Kane, during the 90s and early 00s. His appearances were accompanied by macabre spectacle, often with coffins, gravestones, his trademark urn, or other death-related props.

The WWE has issued a statement expressing its condolences:

WWE is saddened to learn of the passing of William Moody, aka Paul Bearer. Moody made his WWE debut in 1991 as the manager of The Undertaker and went on to become a memorable part of WWE over the course of the next 20 years.

Our deepest condolences go out to Moody’s family, friends and fans.

Before joining the WWE, Bearer wrestled in the World Class Champion Wrestling (WCCW). Bearer had also earned a degree in mortuary science, as well as certification as a funeral director, in the early 80s.

  • Kate Upton Look-Alike Imitates Swimsuit Cover Pic

Kate Upton has once again graced the cover of Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue, this time wearing a revealing parka and not much else on the 2013 swimsuit issue cover.

The pic, of course, has been much imitated since it was revealed, with women using their winter coats to “tastefully” show off their cleavage and abs. However, the pic has probably not been recreated as well as by this Russian beauty, who was brave enough to publicly tweet a picture of her attempt to Twitter. The tweet was quickly re-tweeted by Kate Upton herself, making Ania famous overnight.

Now that Ania has proven she is a dead ringer for the world’s current most popular supermodel, Sports Illustrated took the time to interview the Upton doppelganger. Ania, revealed that she decided to take the photo because she had been told she looks like the model, and because she owned the exact same coat Upton was wearing on the SI cover. It remains to be seen whether Ania can dance the Cat Daddy as well as Upton.

    Kate Upton look-alike

Ania didn’t expect anyone but her friends to see the photo, but seems ok with the attention she’s drawn. The retweets and comments about her photo were, predictably, about the most prominent (and lighted) part of the pic:

  • Odom Falls Asleep During Child Custody Hearing

The New York Post is reporting that Los Angeles Clippers star Lamar Odom during a custody battle over his 14-year-old daughter and 11-year-old son. The children’s mother, Liza Morales, was never married to Odom.

The report states that while Odom’s and Morales’ lawyers spoke in another room, Odom managed to catch a 20-minute nap on a courthouse bench before being rudely awoken by a court officer. Odom claimed that he was both jet-lagged and flu-stricken.

Despite playing in the NBA since 1999, being named to the NBA All-Rookie Team, and playing for the U.S. national basketball team in the 2004 Olympics, Odom is, perhaps, most known recently for marrying reality TV star Khloé Kardashian. The couple’s wedding was featured on the reality TV show Keeping Up With the Kardashians, and they were later featured in a spinoff reality TV show titled Khloé & Lamar. Part of the child custody battle is over whether the children can appear on Odom’s reality TV shows, or whether they will be a part of Morales’ reality TV show, Starter Wives.

  • Kate Winslet Divorce, Marriage Discussed in New Interview

Kate Winslet graces the cover of the newest issue of Harper’s Bazaar, and the Daily Mail has the scoop on the magazine’s interview with the Oscar winner.

According to the report, Winslet speaks about her divorce, her recent marriage, and her newfound clarity about how her past experiences have shaped her.

Winslet also provided a rambling account of how her personal life has affected her acting. “I have so much more material to draw on for work – rubble, bricks – and I know I can carry it now,” the Daily Mail quotes Winslet as saying. “I’m not going to drop it, and if I do, I’ll sift through it. Does that make any sense at all? Probably not…”

Winslet was married to English director Jim Threapleton from 2008 until 2001. More recently she was married to English director Sam Mendes, but the couple divorced in 2010. Last December Winslet surprised many by marrying Ned Rocknroll, a Virgin Galactic executive and nephew of billionaire Richard Branson.

  • Nightmare Bacteria Becoming a Larger Problem, Warns CDC

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) this week warned that carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) are becoming more common. The bacteria can cause potentially deadly infections, but are also highly resistant to antibiotics, making the infections difficult to treat.

Though the germs are a normal part of the human digestive system, some of them have evolved the ability to resist antibiotics. If these resistant CRE enter the blood or other areas of the body they can cause severe infections that kill up to half of patients who become infected. The bacteria can also pass their antibiotic-resistance to other germs, making other types of infections hard to treat.

The CDC’s latest Vital Signs report shows that CRE are becoming more common in medical facilities, and one specific type has been found in 42 states. Though healthy people aren’t normally infected with CRE, patients on ventilators, patients with catheters, or those on long courses of antibiotics are at risk. Though The infections are still relatively uncommon, but CDC is calling on medical facilities and doctors to improve the way they prescribe antibiotics.

Just last month a new study found that patients with CRE could take over one year to be rid of the bacteria, even after their infections have ended. This raises the possibility that patients positive for CRE could become re-infected or infect others.

  • Bodies Found on Iditarod Route in Crashed Airplane

It’s no secret that the Iditarod race can be dangerous. However, dog sledders are generally more prepared for disaster than others who may find themselves stranded in the harsh conditions along the race’s route.

The Associated Press is reporting that three people have been found dead along the Iditarod’s route in Alaska. The pilot, age 59, a woman, age 48, and the woman’s daughter, age 10, all died in the crash of a small aircraft in an area called Rainy Pass. All three were from Eagle River, a town located just north of Anchorage.

The AP report states that the plane took off from Anchorage earlier this week, bound for a small village named Takotna. A flight plan was not filed. A spokesman for the family of the passengers stated they were headed to the village to volunteer for the Iditarod.

After the plane did not make its scheduled return to Anchorage, the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center began searching for it. With the help of the military, state troopers, and private citizens, the plane was found on Tuesday morning in Rainy Pass. The bodies have been recovered and taken to Anchorage.

  • Sistine Chapel Closes Ahead of Papal Conclave

In order to prepare for the upcoming Papal Conclave, the Vatican today closed the Sistine Chapel to visitors. As of 1 pm today, the chapel, famous for its renaissance frescoes, will be closed to the public until the process of choosing a new Pope has finished.

    From the Vatican’s statement:

In order to accommodate the forthcoming Conclave, the Sistine Chapel will remain closed to the public from 1 pm on Tuesday 5 March until further notice. During the same period, the Borgia Apartment and the Collection of Modern Religious Art will not be included in visits to the Vatican Museums.

The papal conclave is being convened in the wake of Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation, the first such resignation since Pope Gregory XII in 1415. Benedict XVI cited his poor health as a reason for his resignation, saying, “both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me.”

The Catholic Church’s College of Cardinals will now meet to elect the next Pope, who also serves as the Bishop of Rome. The Cardinals will lock themselves away in the Sistine Chapel, the site of papal conclaves since 1878, and will remain there until the next Pope is chosen. A two-thirds majority vote of the Cardinals is required to elect a new Pope.

The beginning date of the papal conclave is still unknown, though Cardinals from around the world are arriving in the Vatican for the event.

  • Kissinger Hospitalized After Fall at Home

The Associated Press is reporting that former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger has been hospitalized after suffering a fall at his home in New York.

The New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center has stated that Kissinger is expected to be released from care later today. No other details have been released about his condition. Kissinger is 89 years old.

Kissinger served as the secretary of state under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford from 1973 to 1977. He played a crucial role in the waning years of the Vietnam War and was sometimes consulted on foreign policy even after he left government work. In 1973 Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize related to the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Vietnam. In subsequent years, calls have been made to hold Kissinger accountable for U.S. policy in countries such as Chile and East Timor during his tenure as secretary of state.

Kissinger and his wife, Nancy Maginnes, now live in New York City and Kent, Connecticut.

  • Carly Rae Jepsen Boy Scouts Appearance Cancelled Over Gay Rights

Singer Carly Rae Jepsen, known for her 2012 hit song “Call Me Maybe,” has announced that she is canceling her appearance at the national Boy Scouts of America (BSA) jamboree over the organizations exclusion of openly gay members.

The national Scout jamboree is held around once every four years and brings tens of thousands of Boy Scouts together for camping and events. Jepsen was scheduled to perform at this year’s jamboree, which is being held at a National Scout Reserve in West Virginia.

The singer announced her decision via her Twitter accout, where she stated that she “believes in equality for all people” and “will continue to support the LGBT community on a global level.”

The band Train has cancelled its appearance at the jamboree as well, saying that it “strongly opposes any kind of policy that questions the equality of any American citizen.”

The National Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America last month considered a change to its current policy, which bans openly gay scouts. The new policy would have allowed local scout troops to set their own policies (discriminatory or not) with regards to gay members. The board did not take up the policy, and instead delayed the decision until its annual meeting in May. Many of the Boy Scouts’ troops are sponsored by religious organizations, such as the Mormon Church, that openly oppose gay rights.

“No fair-minded media outlet, corporation or celebrity will want to partner with the BSA as long as the organization puts discrimination and anti-gay bias before the needs of young people,” said Rich Ferraro, VP of Communications GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation). “GLAAD will continue to call for partners of the BSA to speak out against the anti-gay ban until the BSA puts Scouting first and adopts a national non-discrimination policy. Carly Rae Jepsen and Train’s decisions not only send the right message to the BSA, but remind LGBT young people that they are supported and accepted.”

  • 1,000 Flights Canceled as Snow Blankets Chicago

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that over 1,000 Chicago-area flights have been cancelled. More than 850 flights out of Chicago O’Hare International have been cancelled and Midway Airport has cancelled at least 230 flights.

The cancellations come as a winter storm is beginning to drop snow on the city. The U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) is predicting up to 12 inches of snow could fall the Chicago area today.

The NWS has also issued a winter storm warning and a hazardous weather outlook for the greater Chicago area that lasts until midnight. From the NWS warning:

A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED. SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW ARE FORECAST THAT WILL MAKE TRAVEL DANGEROUS. CONSIDER ONLY TRAVELING IF IN AN EMERGENCY. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL…KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT… FOOD…AND WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.

Schools throughout Chicago were closed or closed early today. The Tribune report states that the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation has been salting the roads in and around the city since early this morning, and the Illinois Tollway has snowplows standing by.

  • Bret Michaels Meltdown Follows Apprentice Firing

The first episode of reality TV show All-Star Celebrity Apprentice premiered this past Sunday, bringing back popular celebrities from past Celebrity Apprentice seasons. Celebrities such as Marilu Henner, Penn Jillette, and Dennis Rodman are now competing against one another for the affection of Donald Trump.

As is custom for an Apprentice show, one of the celebrities was unceremoniously dismissed by Trump at the end of the episode. Surprisingly, the first celebrity to go was none other than rocker Bret Michaels. Though Michaels had won the third season of Celebrity Apprentice, and was the only contestant to have won a past Apprentice season, Trump fired the star for a poor fundraising showing. Both Brande Roderick and La Toya Jackson were able to escape the boardroom at Michaels’ expense.

Before his appearance on the show, Michaels stated that some people though he was “crazy” to go back on the show after already winning. It’s a sentiment that even Trump expressed during the boardroom portion of the episode.

Radar Online is now reporting that Michaels took the firing extra hard. The report cites an unnamed “show insider” as saying that Michaels “was crying and totally distraught.”

  • Student Suspended After Disarming Gunman on School Bus

Despite being hailed as a hero by some, a student who wrestled a gun away from another teen on a school bus has now been suspended from school.

According to a report from the Fort Myers, Florida Fox affiliate, the incident occurred last week, when the student wrestled a loaded .22 caliber revolver from a fellow 15-year-old student’s hands after it had been pointed at a classmate. Two other students then helped to disarm the suspect, who’s name has not been released but who was reportedly a member of the Cypress Lake High School football team.

The Lee County School District subsequently suspended the “hero” for three days. According to Fox, the suspension referral states that he was “part of an incident” where a weapon was present. According to the student’s mother, the suspension is retaliation for the student refusing to participate in the investigation into the incident.

“It’s dumb,” said the student. “How they going to suspend me for doing the right thing?” [sic]

  • Second Sinkhole Appears in Tampa Bay Area

It appears that the Earth may be attempting to swallow Tampa Bay, Florida.

Less than one week after a sinkhole reported to be 30 feet across pulled a man named Jeffrey Bush to his death, Reuters is reporting that a second sinkhole has appeared in the Tampa area. The new sinkhole opened up underneath a fence and no injuries have been reported. It is only around 5 feet deep and 12 feet wide, but it still has residents concerned for their lives and property.

According to the Reuters report, Tampa officials have stated that this new sinkhole is unrelated to last week’s deadly one.

The sinkhole that caused the death last week opened up underneath Bush’s bedroom, swallowing Bush and his bedroom furniture. That hole was 60 feet deep and authorities have stated they do not expect to be able to recover Bush’s body. The house in which the sinkhole appeared has been demolished, and residents near the house have been evacuated as a precaution.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection states that limestone in the state is porous and vulnerable to acidic water. As the water dissolves the limestone, caverns form, which can then collapse to form a sinkhole.
