  • Bitbop By Fox Mobile: Streaming TV Shows And Movies To Your 3G BlackBerry

There’s a new beta application entitled bitbop. It’s available for your BlackBerry and it’s similar to hulu. There’s a variety of shows available and many are free right now. I’m sure it will become a subscription, but I’ve had a chance to try it out and this is what I’ve come to find so far.

    What is BitBop?

Bitbop brings premium TV and movies to your smartphone in a unique, graceful application that creates a mobile viewing experience like never before. Subscribe to the Bitbop TV Plan for only $9.99 per month and watch unlimited, full-length, network TV shows with no commercial interruptions. Rent movies to watch in high quality video on demand. Watch free clips, trailers and a variety of videos, all on our free Bitbop Application. Create a free account and start adding videos to your Queue.

It currently only works with the following BlackBerry Devices: Curve 8900, Bold 9000, Tour 9630, and the Bold 9700.

What is a free account and a free beta account?

Anyone can sign up for a free account with Bitbop – either through the website or the Bitbop App.  A free account allows you to browse the site, start to build a queue and watch free clips.  Only people with phones that are supported can sign up for a free beta account.  In this instance you will be able to view the full range of content available on Bitbop via your phone.

There is a TV subscription and these are the details:

You will automatically be billed $9.99 every month using the payment method you provided, unless you cancel your subscription. You are billed every 30 days from the day you subscribed to the Bitbop…

Currently some of the shows are free, you can see TV shows and Movies, and move them into the queue to watch from your BlackBerry.

I signed up for the beta and the free account. I downloaded the BitBop app to my BlackBerry Tour 9630, 5.0. At first I had trouble getting it to work on my BlackBerry. I went into chat on the pc with BitBop support and they were extremely helpful, so I have to give their customer service a five star rating. I deleted and reinstalled the app, with flawless issues. I did find however that streaming clips worked, but free tv shows did not work as well to stream. I had to download the show to watch. The 22 minute show was separated into six chapters to watch but it is commercial free. Downloading the show took about 8 minutes or so.

When you download the app, you have New shows, Queue, Browse, Search, and Account. In the Account you can choose how you Download and Stream, Account Information, Communications, Payment Methods, Subscriptions, Follow Preferences, FAQ, Sign out, and retrieve your Forgotten Password, and the Version.

I wanted to save some screenshots, but while I had the application open, it wouldn’t allow me to take screenshots.

All in all, it’s nice to be able to download your shows and watch them. For $10 a month, you could actually have the ability to watch tv and movies. There’s several different shows and I’m sure there’ll be more. I usually just put my movies on my microsd card, but it would be nice to have the ability to stream shows to my BlackBerry.

Some of the shows available are: Bones, NCIS, CIS, National Geographic Explorer, Futurama, The Office, 24, Family Guy, and 30ROCK, and Glee amongst others.

I would recommend this to you if you were looking for a way to watch your shows wherever you are. Don’t miss those fun ones you’d love to keep. I’m not sure how long the Beta will last, but try it out and let us know what you think.

  • YouMail Visual Voicemail Plus Updates To v2.0.0.4, Free Visual Voicemail Enhanced

YouMail updated it’s BlackBerry application to v2.0.0.4 and it’s a great update. YouMail is visual voicemail that is free and gives you an easier way to view, organize, and listen to your voicemails. YouMail has been listed as the #1 productivity app in the BlackBerry App World. What’s new? I’ve got the newest features and some screenshots.

What’s new? According to the press release it’s the following new features:

    Streamlined User Interface

    • The main screen now shows the number of new messages and each caller’s photo or avatar, which can be imported automatically from Facebook.
    • The message play screen supports fast-forward and rewind, allowing users to get through their messages even more efficiently.

    Enhanced Organization Tools

    • Users can access any folder directly from the App, not just the Inbox, including standard Saved, Spam and Trash folders, as well as user-created folders.
    • Users can turn their voicemail box into a “To Do” list by easily flagging messages for follow-up directly in the App.

    Improved Transcription Experience

    • The play screen now shows more of the transcribed message text, lessening the need to scroll.
    • Users can copy and paste directly from the transcription, allowing them to easily insert message text into searches or responses.

    Faster Voicemail Follow Up

    • The YouMail App is now integrated with the phone’s default SMS client, enabling users to easily reply to voice messages using TXT messages.
    • Simpler menus allow users to easily forward and reply to voicemail while including the original voicemail as a MP3 or WAV file.

YouMail originally has the following features:

    • YouMail unlocks your mobile voicemail
    • Scroll through and play your voice messages in any order.
    • Forward them, save them forever, even organize them in folders.
    • Block unwanted voicemails.
    • Access your voicemail through e-mail or any computer.
    • Even set up personal greetings that are heard only by specific family, friends, or co-workers.

I’ve used YouMail and I really like the customization it has. You can choose different types of answering messages, have fun with them, and keep your voicemail on your phone. It’s so easy to use and it’s free. It works with several carriers as well. You can download the app from BlackBerry App World or from YouMail itself. And if you’d like transcription, it is available for a small subscription fee.

Here’s what I love about the YouMail after the update (some was available prior to). There are pictures associated with the voicemails. You can see who it’s from, the phone number, time and date. You can click you options button and access Check Messages, Forward, Reply, Delete, and Move To. You can Mark New, Flag, and Copy URL. You can select a folder. Also, you have About, Help, Settings, and the YouMail Store.

In Settings you can pick General, Account, Alerts, Audio, Connection, Greetings, Contacts, Storage, Setup, Activate/Deactivate. You can set the types of voicemail for what or when. You set up how you want to be alerted. You set up the Greetings, upload your contacts. So if you want voicemail your way, this is what you’re looking for.

  • Making money on an oil disaster – Will BP take responsibility, or squeeze the tragedy for profits the way Exxon did?

ExxonMobil convened its annual shareholders meeting in Dallas this week as the magnitude of the ongoing BP oil disaster grows. This is a reminder that oil companies need to be held accountable for their actions—both while the oil gushes from the ocean floor and 20 years after the spill. The Exxon Valdez oil accident that slimed Prince William Sound in Alaska in 1989 is a chilling reminder of the need for government oversight and corporate accountability.

    Exxon and BP’s broken record

Many would assume that BP—the company responsible for the Gulf Coast disaster—will cover the entire cost of cleanup. But we learned from the Exxon Valdez spill that the reality is very different:

The Exxon Valdez tanker spilled more than 11 million gallons of crude oil into Alaska’s Prince William Sound, which eventually contaminated approximately 1,300 miles of shoreline. The total costs of Exxon Valdez, including both cleanup and also “fines, penalties and claims settlements,” ran as much as $7 billion. Cleanup of the affected region alone cost at least $2.5 billion, and much oil remains.

Yet Exxon made high profits even in the aftermath of the most expensive oil spill in history. They made $3.8 billion profit in 1989 and $5 billion in 1990. And this occurred while Exxon disputed cleanup costs nearly every step of the way.

Exxon fought paying damages and appealed court decisions multiple times, and they have still not paid in full. Years of fighting and court appeals on Exxon’s part finally concluded with a U.S. Supreme Court decision in 2008 that found that Exxon only had to pay $507.5 million of the original 1994 court decree for $5 billion in punitive damages. And as of 2009, Exxon had paid only $383 million of this $507.5 million to those who sued, stalling on the rest and fighting the $500 million in interest owed to fishermen and other small businesses from more than 12 years of litigation.

Twenty years later, some of the original plaintiffs are no longer alive to receive, or continue fighting for, their damages. An estimated 8,000 of the original Exxon Valdez plaintiffs have died since the spill while waiting for their compensation as Exxon fought them in court.

Coastal regions and coastlines of the Prince William Sound are still contaminated. The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council’s 2009 status report finds that as much as 16,000 gallons of oil remains in the sound’s intertidal zones today. A 2001 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration study surveyed 96 sites along 8,000 miles of coastline and found that “a total area of approximately 20 acres of shoreline in Prince William Sound is still contaminated with oil. Oil was found at 58 percent of the 91 sites assessed and is estimated to have the linear equivalent of 5.8 km of contaminated shoreline.”

Animals and ecosystems suffered immediately after the spill and still do today. Scientific American reported that, “some 2,000 sea otters, 302 harbor seals and about 250,000 seabirds died in the days immediately following the spill.” The researchers estimate that long term, “shoreline habitats such as mussel beds affected by the spill will take up to 30 years to recover fully.”

Most of the oil cannot be mopped up, In fact, only about 8 percent was ever recovered. Dr. Jeffrey Short of Oceana testified at a hearing on the 20th anniversary of Exxon Valdez that, “Despite heroic efforts involving more than 11,000 people, 2 billion dollars, and aggressive application of the most advanced technology available, only about 8 percent of the oil was ever recovered. This recovery rate is fairly typical rate for a large oil spill. About 20 percent evaporated, 50 percent contaminated beaches, and the rest floated out to the North Pacific Ocean, where it formed tar balls that eventually stranded elsewhere or sank to the seafloor.”

Exxon fought the courts, while BP botched the cleanup

Exxon didn’t fail in its response efforts 20 years ago alone. BP actually joined Exxon in its response efforts—officially BP PLC, the same firm working to stop the gusher in the Gulf of Mexico now.

The Associated Press reports: “BP owned a controlling interest in the Alaska oil industry consortium that was required to write a cleanup plan and respond to the spill two decades ago…investigations that followed the Valdez disaster blamed both Exxon and Alyeska for a response that was bungled on many levels.”

The same lack of preparation persists today, as BP workers and trained local employees and officials scramble to contain the gushing oil.

    BP profits while disaster unfolds

BP has made huge profits over the last 10 years. In fact, during the early days of the Gulf of Mexico disaster, BP was making “enough profit in four days to cover the costs of the spill cleanup” so far.

BP made $163 billion in profits from 2001 to 2009 and $5.6 billion in the first quarter of 2010. And The Washington Post found that, “BP said it spent $350 million in the first 20 days of the spill response, about $17.5 million a day. It has paid 295 of the 4,700 claims received, for a total of $3.5 million. By contrast, in the first quarter of the year, the London-based oil giant’s profits averaged $93 million a day.”

Meanwhile, contamination in the gulf continues to worsen. BP CEO Tony Hayward bet there would be a “very, very modest” environmental impact on the region, but the gulf’s fisheries and shorelines will likely follow in the tragic path of the aftermath of the Exxon Valdez oil spill—ruined for decades after. Add thousands of gallons of chemical dispersants used for cleanup to this mix, along with their unknown but potentially toxic effects, and this only compounds the damage to public health, tourism, and the region’s greater economy.

NOAA has already shut down “nearly 20 percent of the commercial and recreational fisheries in the area because of the spill.” And U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke declared a fishery disaster in the Gulf of Mexico on Monday; the affected area includes Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.

There is only more devastation to come to the communities in the region as their local populations and tourism industries suffer a blow not easily nursed back to health.

Holding BP accountable for the aftermath

BP cannot be let off the hook like Exxon was. No matter what anyone does, most of the gushing oil cannot be recovered; this is why BP must be responsible for regional restoration and cleanup—as well as plugging the hole.

BP needs to be held accountable for stopping the oil gusher and for shouldering the safety, health, restoration, and cleanup costs for years to come. President Obama created an independent commission to investigate causes and cleanup options for the disaster, and Congress is attempting to raise oil spill liability caps. But more steps need to be taken to hold BP fully accountable for the aftermath of the disaster.

BP should be required to place its 2010 first quarter profit of $5.6 billion in an escrow account to provide compensation to the fishermen, those in the tourist industry, and others whose livelihoods are threatened. These funds should also be used for cleaning up the soon to be blighted shores.

We are reminded as one of the largest environmental disasters in history continues to unfold in the gulf that we are putting our economy, national security, and environment at greater risk every day that the Senate fails to pass comprehensive clean energy and climate legislation. Yet ExxonMobil and BP both bragged that 2009 was a year of safety and environmental improvements for them; BP even claimed that, “2009 was an outstanding year” for their exploration and production efforts.

The BP Gulf Coast disaster reminds us that the offshore oil industry as a whole carries extreme risks that the American people cannot bear. We must act now to dramatically reduce our oil use, and President Obama and leaders in both parties of Congress must provide the leadership necessary to develop a clean energy and climate solution that becomes law this year.

This theme is a bit different from others we’ve posted. In case some of us (like myself) don’t know what Volcom is, it’s a clothing manufacturer that also sponsors the grassroots effort of “Let The Kids Ride Free” which holds free skateboarding, surfing, and snowboarding competitions, and sponsor skateboarders, surfers, and snowboarders. This theme does a great job of capturing that essence.

This is the Volcom Stone Theme by Motek Americas Inc. Volcom’s moto is “Youth Against Establishment”, and the theme captures it all. We have a hundred copies to giveaway, and I want to show you a little more about the theme before I share the catch.

The theme has the following features:

    • Hidden Volcom Icon Dock  – Scroll up to hide icons and down to reveal them!
    • Link to FREE Volcom backgrounds for even more customization
    • Rotating Volcom Logo Hourglass
    • Rad screen transitions – swipe, fade and slide into your next screen – OS 4.7 and up
    • Light weight  – will not take up precious memory or slow your device down
    • Colorful buttons and highlighters
    • New fonts for banner items and app descriptions
I like the screenshots that I saw, extremely customizable and a variety for you to get that just right feel. And it stands for a company that’s all about expression and action. You can proudly sport a theme that signifies that. And Motek is all about quality and standing behind their product. This theme is more than just a fully customizable bar that’s hidden, the availability of different screens to further customize it and make it your own, it’s a statement in itself.
So here’s the catch. To win a free copy of Volcom Stone, we want a comment of one of two subjects.
    • What kind of themes you like and what kind you would love to have that you can’t find anywhere.
    • What you love about Volcom, and whether you do any snowboarding, skateboarding, or surfing yourself as well.
Good luck and let the comments begin!

  • Zuki Luminosity Premium Theme, A Timeless Luminous Theme

I have another premium theme to show you from Zuki Software Ltd. I fell in love with this one. It’s called Luminosity, and looking at it you can see why. You’ll feel 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s all at once. You’ll swear you can hear Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” in the background playing. It’s bright, transitions so neat, and the options flies. Check it out…

When I first saw this theme, I was as captured by this as the Beatles theme by Built By Request. It’s classic and bright, and it just never ceases to amaze me. Luminosity is available in the BlackBerry Sync Store for 4.99, but is only $3.49 till May 23rd. Here’s the description from the BlackBerry Sync Store:

This super slick theme is colourful , handy with 12 icons on home screen and as soon as you download It you will feel right at home using it.

With the icons changed to a simple and effective black square with silver brushed metal icons you will just love using this theme day in day out.

With some neat animations and screen transitions added to make the theme live up to it’s name.

You’ll also love the red digital clock in large font right in the middle of the home screen. The battery and signal meter stand proud in colour. So you can always see at a glance how your BlackBerry is performing

    Features include:

    • Slide screen transitions zoom in and out immaculately
    • No lag whatsoever – Very smooth
    • Battery/signal/network are colourful and clear to see without spoiling the theme’s look
    • Visually stunning HD graphics

I downloaded and installed this theme to my BlackBerry Tour 9630 with OS 5.0. The theme installed quickly, did my battery pull after activation and behold. The theme looks like streams of sparkling light dancing straight to the top. There’s aquamarine, blue, violet, pink, magenta, red, red-orange, orange, yellow, and green. The top left has a tiny battery life indicator, the top right sits the signal indicator, coverage, and the GPS. The next level has the date in white, and the middle has the time in digital fashion in bright red. Below that sits a double row of not a few, but twelve customizable icons. These can be anything you decide. I love having to choose which ones I want. If you scroll on the first two on the right, they will be highlighted in a glowing light blue aura, the second in purple, third in pink, the fourth in red, the fifth in yellow, and the last in sea green. Message indicators come up looking like the very top of the drink umbrellas in different colors and integrate in the apps so you can see your alerts.

Click the options button and the first transition you will notice immediately. A very important note to keep in mind, the Gmail icons are the hardest to cover. They don’t accept the theme completely and it’s more of a BlackBerry issue than of a theme, so don’t hold it against a theme. I’ve tried several and the gmail icons always stay as the default. So the transition when you hit the menu button goes inward, bringing up all your folders and icons you have set. The icons are easy to figure out and are black with white and grey. Scrolling over these icons causes them to be surrounded by a grey aura. Any folder such as messages, etc you open will transition outward. And if you’re in messenger and writing, when you go to send, the options menu comes up and when you click send message, the menu flies up from whatever point you are in the message. Now the highlight bar is really different. It’s black with block like lines of color. The hourglass becomes a grey box with green lines that run through it.

All in all a really great theme, and while I can’t really explain how the menu flies, I can compare it to the poof from Tweet Genius. It just flies up fast from whatever point you’re at. The transitions go into and out of each other, which is also hard to explain, but it’s really neat. And yes, I had to include the call screen so you could see how different it is.

Luminosity is compatible with OS: 5.0 only

And compatible with BlackBerry Devices:  Bold 97xx and 9650 Series, Tour 96xx Series,  Curve 89xx Series

You can grab your copy of Zuki Luminosity by Zuki Software Ltd for $3.49 till March 23rd from the BlackBerry Sync Store here

There’s also an edition for the Curves 8330 (Curve), 8350i (Curve), 8520 (Curve), 8530 (Curve), OS 5.0

Grab your Curve copy of Zuki Luminosity by Zuki Software Ltd for $3.49 till March 23rd from the BlackBerry Sync Store here

If you like color, a theme that’s colorful without hurting your eyes, transitions, special effects, and not one that wears on the phone, then what are you waiting for? Especially with the time sitting bright in the middle in digital red. If you grab a copy, let me know what you think.

Built By Request let us know that they have released their first paid premium theme in the BlackBerry Sync Store. The theme is called Play and it’s a PS3 Replica Theme for all you PS3 fans. Let’s take a closer look…

The description from the store is as follows:

PS3 Replica Theme for the 9630 and 9700. Closest action seen from scrolling icons to meters. Theme is light on the memory for all the interactions at 520kb. All icons (excluding the first slot) are reduced in size to show even more of the wallpaper which is user changeable and will display on the lock screen (older os 5.0). First slot intended for weather slot which also displays on the lock screen (older os 5.0)

The features listed are as follows:

    • Stationed dock of 8 user selected mini icons
    • Hidden Mini Icons under user dock become visible when entering a column of the user dock

    • Wallpaper friendly: Home screen image displays on lock screen (with older os 5.0)

The theme is also available for two devices: The BlackBerry Tour 9630 and the BlackBerry Bold 9700 with 5.0 OS.

I installed this theme on my BlackBerry Tour 9630 so I could check it out and share some screenshots with you.

I don’t have a PS3 to be honest, but I’ll walk you through the theme. It’s  a black, white, and grey theme. The very top right has the weather app slot which I have placed the BerryWeather app in. The battery life shows as the battery and percent in tiny numbers. The tube in the top right shows the bars of service available as a number and the time and date in small numbers and fonts.

The row that sites below that has eight customizable apps. The first will scroll through power, lock, and alarm. The second will let you scroll through Options, Set up, Manage Connections, and Help. The third will scroll through Camera and Pictures.  The fourth will let you scroll through the Media apps. The fifth will allow you to scroll through videos and the Video Camera. The sixth is games. The seventh will let you browse through the Browser, Facebook, Twitter for BlackBerry, and MySpace. The last one allows you to scroll through the messenger, messages and compose.

Clicking on the menu button brings up all the icons, and they are all native icons that white on grey. Options are also in grey, I’ve included a few shots of what the BlackBerry Messenger and Options looks like too.

As you can see, the icons are easy to read and very familiar. It’s smooth and fast, and should bring joy to you PS3 fans out there. And to top it off, we have even struck up a deal for our loyal readers. Right now Play is available in the BlackBerry Sync Store for $6.99, but for our loyal readers, if you use the code: BBSyncLoyalty , you will save a whole 75% off, making it an entire $1.75, which is open to the first 100 purchases, so hurry.

  • Introducing CrunchSMS, A Free Beta SMS App For BlackBerry

We all love our BlackBerry smartphones. Do you still use text? How would you like an app that makes your tests appear like the chat-styled bubble SMS apps like on the  iPhone or Android phones? And how about if it was free and ad-free? If so, keep reading…

I thought this was a pretty clever app. I’ve seen some paid versions of this type of app, but this app is free and actually does what their’s do with no ads and no charge.

I installed this on my BlackBerry Tour 9630 to see what it would look like and this is what it does…

I know many of us love that bubble-styled chat, and this cures that want free. I liked that it mimics the Android styled phones, right down to that look. I always see comments about wanting BlackBerry to incorporate this feature, but now there’s an app that delivers for free. What do the options look like?

So all in, several options are available, and the beta application has some faqs available on the website including instructions. You can stop the normal texts from going to the regular SMS folder after installing by going to Options/Security/Advanced Security Options/Firewall and check SMS. You do not have to enable the firewall for this to work. Your SMS will then go into CrunchSMS.

You can download CrunchSMS from BlackBerry App World and also from the CrunchSMS website itself.

Grab your free OTA CrunchSMS from the CrunchSMS site here

If you download it, let us know what you think.

  • iLock By MMMOOO Updates To 1.1.0 With A New Look And New Features

MMMOOO let us know that they updated their iLock application and I have to admit, it’s quite noticeable. I had to check it out and see what was new, and was pleasantly surprised. The new app has a new look, new menu, and works really nicely. Come take a closer look with us…

iLock is updated to v1.1.0 now. The change log is:
    1. Lock/Hidden the file and folder, the newly rocking function in iLock
    2. Enable add an app Manually if it was not in pre-refreshed list
    3. Use a new & texture icon, looks nice in different style themes
    4. Fixed some little bugs, more steady & smooth
The promotion image is also changed according to the new logo.

As you can see, I’m really impressed with the new look and it includes much more. It’s similar to Options/Applications where you can choose what apps to lock from Third Party and Core apps. I tested it out and it works perfect. All my messages, my BlackBerry Messenger, any app I chose. Great job MMMOOO in the new update! It kept my most prized apps behind prying eyes, and kept them safe. I tried different ways, and it still came up to a password to allow me access to each one that I chose.

If you have iLock, you can sign in to the BlackBerry Sync Store online, go to My Apps, and send it to your phone. If you have the mobile Super Store, go to My Apps and download from there. If you don’t have iLock, it’s available in the BlackBerry Sync Store for only $3.99. What is the advantage of this application? Password protect your apps whether its for home or work. What I like most? That if someone keeps attempting to try passwords, you won’t have a wipe out in ten tries.

You can grab a copy of iLock by MMMOOO for $3.99 from the BlackBerry Sync Store here

  • Twitter For BlackBerry v1.0.0.40, A Closer View

Inside BlackBerry, The Official BlackBerry Blog, announced the release of the updated version of Twitter for BlackBerry. Currently it is available in the BlackBerry App World in the test center as well. I had to download it and show some pictures as well as share some in depth explanation of the features and share some short cuts. Check it out…

I have to admit, I’m already loving the speed of the Twitter for BlackBerry app, I haven’t experienced the slight freezing, and the new features are really nice!

The quote tweet option is nice as you can actually place “quotes” in too now. The username auto-complete has been asked for by many tweeters. I also like the fact you can set it to warn you about personal information about to be posted.  YFrog and TweetPhoto are also supported now.

I do like the ability to use your BlackBerry smartphone’s system fonts or the fonts you can choose from within Twitter for BlackBerry. It makes it more customizable. You also now have the ability to see a geotagged tweet with BlackBerry Maps. I did notice that when you tweeting, if you use more than the characters allowed for a tweet, you can’t click on the send button.

But for the new features, it’s worth checking out. If you tried it and didn’t like it before, you really should give it another shot. If you have Twitter for BlackBerry, you should be able to check for updates through the app itself.

For a closer definition of the new features, head on over to the Inside BlackBerry here

Here are a few shortcuts from the Official BlackBerry Blog that you can use for your benefit with Twitter for BlackBerry:

    • R (reply)
    • L (reply all)
    • Space (page down)
    • F (retweet)
    • C (compose)
    • D (refresh)
    • Alt+0 (home)
    • Alt+1 (mentions)
    • Alt+2 (lists)
    • Alt+3 (profile)
    • Alt+4 (inbox)
    • Alt+5 (find people)
    • Alt+6 (search)
    • Alt+7 (popular topics)

If you tried it or have it, let us know what you think of the newly updated version.
