  • Lookout vs SMobile Security Shield: Anti-Virus And Anti-Spyware, Is There A Difference Besides Free?

I have been a big fan of SMobile Security and their products after using them for so long. I like the assurance of being able to look up current and past threats in the Global Threat Center for reference and information. There’s been a new product in beta that’s free which I’ve been reading about by the name of Lookout. For the sake of security I feel it’s important to have a product that works as you would expect. And while there are no viruses currently affecting the BlackBerry system, there is the threat of spyware.

In beginning my comparison, I have to look at the sites. SMobile has the business and personal choices, several tabs including Blog and Support. They have an online dashboard that you have access to. They also have the ability to run an “enterprise” where you can manage a dashboard and manage phones no matter what platform they are except for the iPhone. From there you can manage the phones similar to BES. They also have the Global Threat Center where all threats are listed with a description, much similar to McAffee.

So now a look at the Lookout site. The main page has Home, Learn More, Blog, and Help. There’s also Sign-Up and Login. By going through the site I can see that they include a dashboard, states it too can manage a varied platform of phones, gives the GPS tracking ability, wipe, and can back up contacts and pictures. It has an anti-virus and also a firewall. For me the firewall is something we all have on our BlackBerry device, but it isn’t activated by default. So now to download the product and find out how the dashboard and the app will work on my BlackBerry.

Now a little bit on the companies themselves. I’ll begin with Lookout. Lookout was founded in 2007 by a group of technologists. Their goal was to protect mobile devices with a comprehensive software suite that is simple, lightweight and effective. There’s no mention of their security specialists on the site that I could find. On the blog there are first names, but that was it.

SMobile was founded in 2002 and leads in comprehensive security solutions. The products they offer are AntiVirus, Firewall, AntiSpam, AntiTheft, Identity Protection, Enterprise Controls, and even software to monitor your child’s phone. Their customers range from governments and corporations to consumers and their families. The Executive Vice-President and Chief Technology Officer Dan V. Hoffman is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), a Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) and a Certified Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI). The Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer Paul Miller has been active in the security industry since 1993, specializing in mobile security for the last 12 years. Previously at Symantec, he was their Managing Director for Mobile Security with global responsibilities for their mobile strategy and business.

The reason I decided to put the two to the test is for the following reasons: First what if you or a loved one were to have an extremely jealous significant other? These spyware sites prey on the insecurities of such consumers using the trust issue. There has been more media coverage on it lately, including Good Morning America. It’s frightening, and it’s real. There have been cases of murder, stalking, etc with these types of spyware. With this in mind, it’s important that if you don’t password protect your phone, and you trust someone else with it, then you should be aware there are potential dangers. These spyware programs act similar to a trojan on a pc, stripping you of your privacy and leaving you completely vulnerable. With this they can read your texts, see your pictures, listen in on your conversations on or off the phone, track you, and access your emails.  Because of the seriousness of such incidences, this is why I decided to put it to the test. To use a title of an Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware then it should perform as such. McAffee is a product you’ve come to know, yet AVG does a fair job for being free. I went into this testing with an open mind and trust in both. Let’s see how the tests went.

For my testing I am using my BlackBerry 9630 with 5.0. I also installed five popular spyware (Flexispy, MobileSpy, PhoneSnoop, Flexispy Pro, and SpyBubble) that can be downloaded to the BlackBerry system, and this is what I found. The screenshots you will see will be from both the BlackBerry Device displaying the software app, scan and results, but also you will see screenshots of the Dashboard on the PC as well.

The test was done like this: The latest version of both anti-virus were installed on my BlackBerry Tour. One spyware was installed at a time and each anti-virus was run, one at a time to see if the spyware would be detected. At the end of the first run, I uninstalled both programs and reinstalled again. I downloaded the same spyware, and I ran the Lookout first.

The Lookout is free, yes, but guess what? I scanned twice and it said there was no infected files on my phone. Not one spyware that I downloaded was detected, and they’re all popular spyware! And not only that, it says everything is ok. I could see it missing one, but it didn’t even catch one. This concerns me as you could have spyware on your phone and it remains undetected. Now backup didn’t work for pictures either. I was somewhat let down over the results of my findings, but again the product is in BETA so perhaps with some time and work, it could evolve. Backup is only useful if you want your contacts backed up. If you’re a Verizon customer, use your Backup Assistant and you will have the same results free without having to download this software.

SMobile results. With SMobile I can update daily or hourly. I updated the anti-virus and began running the test. You have the option of which files to scan like a pc. As it scans, it shows all files and when it’s done shows you either clean or infected and which files. It names them for you, which it did, then I have two choices. I can click the options button and click delete virus and it will give you details about the removal. Or you can go to Options/Applications and remove them manually which will still require a restart of your BlackBerry.

So to conclude the findings, I will lay out what I observed. The chart displayed shows each spyware, the software and beneath I placed N/A if the spyware went undetected, and an x if it was detected. I was hoping that the Lookout would have caught at least one. As a result of this testing, I would definitely recommend that if you are looking for a real anti-virus/anti-spyware program for your phone and are truly concerned, I would invest in the SMobile Security Shield. The choice is yours but so is your peace of mind. It’s important when you are looking to protect your Blackberry and yourself that you find something that offers that solution. If you’re going to trust a product, be sure it’s one you can trust. And if it’s going to use the term anti-virus, be sure it does just that. You owe it to yourself and to your loved ones.

On a personal note, I was really stunned and felt so uneasy with knowing that an application that says it’s anti-virus did not catch such a threat. If I were in a serious situation and my privacy were in jeopardy, I would have a false sense of security to rely on Lookout. On the other hand, I felt so completely relieved each time the Shield found the spyware and removed it. We live in a society where we can be tracked and stalked not only in person, but cyber-stalked as well. I don’t let anyone play with my phone, but as technology advances, I feel best when I know that I am prepared. I ask you, is there a difference between a program that an annual subscription and a program that is free? You decide.

  • The Matrix v1.0 Theme By MMMOOO, Fun And Spirited

MMMOOO has some really nice themes out there, and while I have my favorites, each one has a new look to it. And this one is definitely a theme to have. It’s the name, but also it’s the way it looks and run. The colors are nice, transitions appealing, and the icons are altogether playful. I bring you the Matrix…

The Matrix by MMMOOO is available in the BlackBerry Sync App Store and mobile Superstore. It’s a premium theme at $4.99. I installed this app on my BlackBerry Tour 9630 running 5.0. The app installed easily, did the battery pull, and activated the theme. And this is what it looks like.

The screen is nice, it reminds me of one of my favorite movies of all time, but it’s also playful. The pink and purple icon that you see below the time is actually the sound or profiles. Any notifications or alerts will show up above the profile icon. Across from the time on the bar on the top of the box on the right side sits the bars of service and the battery life. The icons on the top are customizable. The transition is nice as it goes into itself as you come out of one screen, and opens out as you move into a new screen. The transitions are so smooth they’re fluid. The icons are very playful and bold.

These are the menu icons. Let’s take a closer look at the folder icons.

Going into messages, options, etc, the font is black and the outline is in a somewhat darker green so it’s easy on the eyes.

And last of the shots, I’ll show you what the theme preferences look like.

I really like this theme for several reasons. Mainly it didn’t freeze my phone, it flows so smooth, the darker green is appeasing, and the theme does remind me of the Matrix. Anyone would love using this theme, it’s fun and yet has that geek feel to it, and it’s very easy on the phone. If you use the message icon in your customizable row, when you scroll over it, it will actually show your messages in the box below. The icons are easy to figure out, no guesswork or wishing you had a manual.

Grab your copy of The Matrix Theme by MMMOOO for $4.99 from the BlackBerry Sync App Store here

  • NHL+BlackBerry+BBM=The BlackBerry All-Access Pre Game Show

I’m not really a sports fan, but I do like hockey. It’s better live and my first hockey game was associated with RIM, so this turn of events is exciting to me. The National Hockey League is launching a new web series which is tied to the playoffs and they have a new sponsor being brought to the program: BlackBerry.

It’s no secret that Jim Balsillie loves hockey. He loves it so much he even tried to buy the Phoenix Coyotes. It’s only natural that BlackBerry be sponsoring the NHL in some way.

The BlackBerry All-Access Pre Game Show will be on Wednesday, April 14th (yes today) at 4:30 p.m. and is tied to the first round of the playoff games. The host will be Deb Placey and will originate from the NHL and powered by the Reebok store in New York. There will be one every day there is a playoff game.

You can catch the show on NHL.com, the official NHL YouTube page, the NHL Facebook page, and some other sports sites that carry the syndicated content such as SBNation.com, Ticketmaster.com, and theScore.com.

But there’s more to this story, the NHL is going to be using the BlackBerry Messenger (our beloved BBM) during the show. The reporters in the field will be using the BBM to send updates to the host, Deb Placey, who in turn will pass the updates to those watching.

The NHL is also devising a virtual “insider” by the name of Stanley10 that BlackBerry users can add to their contact list on BBM and receive breaking news and tips of the day straight to you through your BBM.

I’m excited about this. I think it’s a really interesting move and since I had come to know hockey through RIM, and knowing Balsillie’s love of hockey, this was a move destined to happen. And bringing hockey to the web as a pre game show and using BBM is a new and fascinating way to include BlackBerry users into the action, I’m curious to see how it turns out as it could mean a whole new way to use your BBM aside of your contacts.

I’d like to know who else has any thoughts on this event. Please share them with us.

  • Global oil demand hits new high — threatening both economic and national security

The International Energy Agency (IEA) released new findings Tuesday April 13 that global oil demand will reach a record high level in 2010, as the world economy recovers and developing nations’ demand for oil grows to new heights.  IEA forecasts that average annual world oil demand will have rebounded 2% from 84.9 million barrels per day (mb/d) in 2009 to 86.6 mb/d in 2010.  Susan Lyon, Special Assistant on CAP’s Energy Opportunity team, has the story.

In its April 13 Oil Market Report, a monthly update on world oil market trends, IEA forecasts world oil demand growth this year at 1.67 mb/d, up by 100,000 bpd from its previous forecast.  Accordingly, the agency finds that “crude oil futures hit 18-month highs in early April, with expectations for an accelerating economic recovery.”  Since the last oil market report, global oil demand has been revised up by 30,000 barrels per day (b/d).

The report warns that rising oil prices may threaten continued economic recovery:

Ultimately, things might turn messy for producers if $80-$100 per barrel is merely seen as the new $60-$80, stunting economic recovery while prompting resurgent non-oil and non-OPEC supply investment.prices

On the supply side, due to lower OPEC output, global oil supply fell by 220,000 b/d in March as well.  The new data also reveals a new trend in global oil refinery throughput: “While China, India and Russia all posted record highs in February, European throughputs fell to their lowest level in 17 years.”

IEA’s report comes on the heels of last week’s 2010 Joint Operating Environment (JOE) report by  the U.S. Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM) lays out the energy crunch that lies before us and its likely consequences.  The projected growth of overall energy demand for decades to come, led by oil and coal, is alarming to the U.S. armed forces:

By the 2030s, [energy] demand is estimated to be nearly 50% greater than today. To meet that demand, even assuming more effective conservation measures, the world would need to add roughly the equivalent of Saudi Arabia’s current energy production every seven years.

Without tremendous energy efficiency efforts and a massive shift toward renewable energy, they note that the U.S. and world economies may suffer production bottlenecks as well as regional instability due to resource scarcity and price volatility.

Furthermore, the JOE (!) also pinpoints climate change as a top 10 security issue: “one of the ten trends most likely to impact the Joint Force.”  Previously, the Department of Defense’s Quadrennial Defense Review argued that climate change is a “destabilizing agent” and the Center for Naval Analysis convened a board of military officials who concluded in 2007 that climate change is a “threat multiplier.”

To face the dual challenges of energy and climate, we must pass a comprehensive clean energy and climate legislation that will reduce our dangerous dependence on foreign oil while also putting a limit on carbon pollution.  The IEA reminds us that the “return of economic growth” is delicate and requires reducing our vulnerability to oil price spikes and supply disruptions.

We’ve had a few solutions  become available to the BlackBerry for texting while driving, but this one integrates with your vehicle like Viper does, with your safety while driving in mind. This software installs on your BlackBerry and has a plug-and-forget Activator that installs in your vehicle without any tools necessary. What does it do? Let’s see..

Key2SafeDriving activates when you start your car. It automatically places your BlackBerry into Safe Driving Mode, disabling the ability to send messages or receive calls and text messages. It has the functions of monitoring, reporting and regulating mobile phone use while driving. Incoming calls go to directly to voicemail and incoming texts are sent an automatic reply letting your contacts know that you’re driving and will respond later (the driver will respond when they have safely reached their destination).

You’ll still be able to utilize the Emergency call functionality which is always enabled so that you can place an emergency call to 911 or other pre-determined phone calls.

Annual statistics show that mobile phone use causes 636,000 car accidents and more than 2,600 deaths. Costs incurred are about an estimated $43 billion according to the Harvard Center of Risk Analysis. Virginia Tech also did a study and estimated that 80% of all automobile accidents are caused by some form of distracted driving. This app allows a parent of a teen to become an administrator and set limits and be notified of any events. A text will go out if an attempt is made to text, message, call, or if an emergency call is placed.

Key2SafeDriving is available to value-added resellers, wireless carriers, and retailers. It is available to consumers for $99.95 with no annual subscription fees and you are able to purchase it directly from SafeDrivingSystems.

I can definitely see where this can offer peace of mind to a parent or even for ourselves if we find ourselves tempted. There are other solutions, but this is different in that it involves the vehicle, and that it has no annual fee, and allows an administrator. So safety is something ensured. Especially with different states passing the law about texting while driving, this is something available for your convenience and safety now. It’s easy with an app on your phone, no annual fees after the purchase, and the no tools needed for the installation of the device that goes in your car. It doesn’t get any easier than that.

You can purchase Key2SafeDriving for $99.95 from SafeDrivingSystems here

  • SiriusXM Radio App For BlackBerry Is Now Available In Canada Too

We let you know when SiriusXM became available as a BlackBerry App and we reviewed the SiriusXM app, the only drawback was that it was only available for the U.S., and now it’s finally available for Canada! There seems to be a bit of a difference between them, let’s take a closer look…

SiriusXM has a devoted following of users, and it’s nice that they are able to use it not only at home and in their car, but also on their phones. You can listen to it over both 3G and WiFi. There’s a 14 day free trial  and then it’s $7.99 for a monthly subscription, or if you’re a current subscriber it’s only $2.99 monthly. When looking at the U.S. version, it states the app can play over 120 channels of the SiriusXM programming you love (with the exception of Howard Stern, which isn’t one of my personal faves anyhow) and the Canadian version states that it has over 100 channels of the Sirius programming you love on your BlackBerry.

I like the variety SiriusXM has to offer, but I’m partial to Pandora as I can start a song from the beginning, or even Slacker. I don’t get that opportunity with SiriusXM. With SiriusXM, it’s just like turning on the radio, however you can still listen to the channels you love.

If you’re interested or are a current subscriber, you can grab your trial copy now, and if you’re a subscriber, log in with your user name and password and get more serious about your SiriusXM.

  • Zuki Mobile-Focus Theme, A Visually Eye Appealing Theme

One thing for sure when looking at this theme, Zuki Software Ltd. has an eye for detail and vision. This new theme Focus, is absolutely stunning, fast, and easy on the eyes, but I love the contrast of black and white with color and details. Check it out…

Zuki Mobile-Focus is available in the BlackBerry Sync Store for only $3.49. The description is as follows:

A beautiful theme that will catch your eye literally with some subtle changes which work well with the integration of the overall look and feel.

All main screen elements like battery meter, date & time and network all moved centrally to merge elequently with the theme.

A visually stunning theme that will appeal to everyone.

Simple yet effective theme with a truly exceptional photo some changes to notification icons and fonts. From picture above you can see the time and date have been made bigger so it’s easy to now the time from your theme.

    Features include:

    • Smart, neat and tidy.
    • Runs smooth (no lag)
    • Has new animated screen transitions which fade in and out in a sexual manner

I installed this theme on my BlackBerry Tour 9630. It’s really nice in how it looks, visually stunning is a great way to describe it. Contrasts are nice. The date and time are large enough to view on the top right corner, above the battery and the bars of service. On the top left sits your alerts. The icons line the bottom of the eye, and they are customizable, making it your most used. I also like that the cursor is an arrow with the colors surrounding it. I have added screenshots so you can see how it looks. When the menu comes up the background is black and white.

The menus and the messages are black and white, however when you highlight them or scroll on them, they turn a nice shade of blue. The transitions fade nicely making it appealing and seemingly flowing into each other.

This theme is a premium theme, and it’s perfect for anyone with an eye for details and an eye for something different that won’t wear on your phone. For me a theme has to have flair, but not at the cost of the battery or memory, it has to be different, and it has to be a theme I could use anytime. This is definitely one of those themes you’ll love.

  • The Aquarium, Azure-Premium, And Jing Realm Themes From MMMOOO

MMMOOO has some really interesting themes, and I’m going to highlight a few of them I haven’t shown before. Unique, interesting, and definitely intriguing, come see what MMMOOO has to offer. We’ll start with Aquarium, then Azure, and finally the Jing Realm, let’s check them out…

Aquarium is one of my fave screensavers. It’s really neat as the fish and jelly fish swim around to keep your phone entertaining when you’re not using it. I was so excited when I found out a theme named The Aquarium Theme that was out to match it. First off, I love the way it looks, with the soothing I like the vivid colors, the highlight in light blue, the teal windows, and the way the bars run, showing a B for Battery and S for Signal. The time and date are displayed as well as the GPS and the type of coverage. There’s a hidden bottom bar which you can hide by scrolling over the last icon moving the trackball to the left. Return the bar scrolling the opposite way. When you bring up all the icons, the picture blurs in the background. I’ve included a few screenshots so you can get the idea of the soothing tranquility and colors this theme has to offer. The Aquarium Theme and the Aquarium Screensaver pair perfect together. If you like it, Aquarium is available in the BlackBerry Sync App Store for $6.99

Azure-Premium Theme is a nice theme with a fresh background, and icons that look cartoon-like and is easy on the eyes. Icons are easy to recognize and the theme itself is a break out of the ordinary. It is simple and concise. Azure-Premium Theme is available in the BlackBerry Sync Store for $3.99.

The last theme I’m going to highlight is by one of my favorite designers from MMMOOO. It’s called Jing Realm-Art Hidden Menu Theme. I love how the GPS and the clock are hidden in the art, and how it looks like the art has a shadow behind it. The description is as follows:

Unique & Best in Art Character Style Themes. Traditional Chinese brush drawing as homescreen, those two characters means our strength is in quietness and trust. Reminding us seeking for peace and wisdom even in busy time.

SVG Art Hidden Menu gives you an ultra view to enjoy the nice homescreen, still with quick accessing shortcut icons.

The art is classic, black and white with grey as well. It’s very simple, yet elegant. The icons are very familiar. The side bar is hidden easily and brought back just with scrolling. Jing Realm is available in the BlackBerry Sync App Store for only $5.99.

  • BlackBerry Messenger Assaulted By Spam Again

Out of all the things I love about the BlackBerry Messenger, I can do without the ridiculous spam. This time it wasn’t a virus, it was a false message that is supposed to be from RIM. If RIM really wanted to contact you, don’t you think they’d pin or email you as they do for your OS updates?

This is the message as it went across:

Hello, greetings from RIM (Research In Motion) proprietors of BlackBerry. This message is to inform all of our users, that our servers have recently been really full, so we are asking for your help to fix this problem. We need our active users to re-send this message to everyone on your contact list inorder to confirm our active users that use BlackBerry Messenger, if you do not send this message to all your BlackBerry Messenger contacts then your account will remain inactive with the consequence of losing all your contacts.
We apologize for the inconvenience but this is the only way possible to resolve this problem. Sincerely Research in Motion. For more information visit:
    www.blackberry.com/inactiveusers
This is just another version of the same messages that went around the Hotmail, the Yahoo Messenger, etc. It’s false, there’s no such incident taking place and if you forward this on to other contacts, you are spamming your contacts on BBM. I am thankful no one sent this message to me, I just delete contacts when I get broadcasts such as this, but others received it. Please think twice before sending such a message out. It really is an assault on the BlackBerry Messenger as well as irritating your contacts.

A good practice to keep is to ignore such messages, only allow people you trust and value on your BlackBerry Messenger, and if you delete those who spam you, it also helps alleviate the escalation of such spam. If you receive such a message, you can try conveying to the naive contact that it’s a hoax and it’s spam, or you can delete them. Also if you are wondering if such a message is true, there’s always the snopes online base for common hoaxes and spam. Snopes has a great writeup about this hoax, and its variants beginning with Hotmail and ending with the BlackBerry Messenger, thanks to Barbara “The Hoax Diamond” Mikkelson

Please don’t be part of the assault. Use the broadcast feature wisely, don’t ruin it for other BlackBerry users. Use common sense and be courteous. If you received the message, let us know what you thought about it. Share it so others can learn from it.

If you download it and notice any changes, please let us know. I’ve included the link to download the apps straight from your BlackBerry.
