  • Toyota Highlights Made In America at Chicago Auto Show

Toyota plans to highlight their “success stories,” Made in America business plan and the Tundra that pulled the shuttle at the Chicago Auto Show. The focus is on their bright future and we couldn’t agree more.

Toyota Highlights Made In America at Chicago

This image from the 2009 Chicago Auto Show is of Toyota’s then large exhibit. Can’t wait to see a larger one!

The plan is to blend new products, concepts vehicles and success stories as part of a 45,000-square-foot stand. While the stand was impressive in Detroit at 35,000 square-foot, Toyota is going big. What’s really interesting to someone who went to that show is how Toyota really didn’t have a good presence in Detroit. Can this bigger stand draw more attention.

With most the “Big 3″ automakers having big stands and putting all their effort into Detroit. Toyota seems to be taking a different route. For example, within the last few days, they have announced an indoor ride course and a larger footprint. Why the focus on Chicago?

“Chicago has long been considered one of the top drawing consumer auto shows in the country,” said Brent Marrero, auto show planner for Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. “This year, we wanted the exhibit to not only showcase our incredible products but also our heritage in the United States. We know that ‘made in America’ is especially important to people living in the Midwest, and we feel we have a great story to tell, with 70 percent of all our vehicles sold in Unites States being built here as well.”

Toyota states in their press release that they plan on having 50 vehicles to check out including the all-new RAV4, Avalon, Corolla Furia Concept, Fun-Vii and a special edition SEMA/Kyle Bush Camry. Most of these cars have already been unveiled to the public.

What is Toyota not saying? Yep, you guessed it, they aren’t confirming that a 2014 Toyota Tundra will be at the show. While sources have told us that the truck will be there, unfortunately, we don’t have a confirmation from Toyota.

If/when it is unveiled will probably be at Toyota’s PR event at 9am on February 7th. I will be at the show and will be probably live updates via Facebook (dependent on cell phone coverage). For the latest, make sure you like our Facebook page.

  • 2013 NAIAS Full-Size Truck Wrap – Bright Future?

After two days of attending the media preview days at the 2013 North America International Auto Show in Detroit, MI, here are some final thoughts. In short, differences in models are closing, gas-powered only engines is shrinking and some automakers don’t seem to care about the full-size truck market.

    2013 NAIAS Wrap-up Thoughts - Wrap Up

Final thoughts and commentary on 2013 NAIAS show.

    Fuel
The future of gas-only vehicles is very much in question. Every manufacture was proudly showing off some sort of electric hybrid vehicle and that included luxury vehicles as well. There were several really cool luxury electric coupes, SUVs and the X-Trux from VIA motors.

When it comes to electric everybody was making a case for their future with the following statements:

    • Total Cost of Ownership is key to understanding cost benefit analysis. Yes, you will pay a larger car payment, yet when you add up your current expenditures on gas and maintenance, the electric vehicle is cheaper each month.
    • No Range Anxiety. Automakers were very clear in saying that people who shy away from electric hybrids due to range anxiety simply don’t know how electric vehicles will work. Yes, there are a few concepts that are all electric, however, the majority of the ones I saw were hybrids. Let me be clear, the electric hybrid is were automakers are taking us. The electric-only concepts will stay concepts.
    • To the point, consumers need to get educated. Electric vehicles are the future and fighting it is foolish.

    State of Full-Size Market
As I stood back and looked at all the offerings at the show, it became clear that everyone had a different idea on which way to go. Some really showed off their full-size trucks while others didn’t bother showing any.

Ford had a TON of trucks and had an impressive display. They really stressed the EcoBoost engine, reinforced frame and towing/work capabilities.

    2013 NAIAS Wrap-up Thoughts - Ford Atlas

The Ford Atlas lowed to the Joe Louis Arena floor.

Also, impressive was the Ford Atlas concept launch that was held in Joe Louis Arena adjacent to Cobo Center. This truck stole a lot of the spotlight from the GM twins on day 2, but didn’t diminish their spotlight at all on day 1. If Ford had really planned to do this, they would have had a day 1 unveiling.

It seems Ford gets the truck market. In a press release they reiterated their view:

…Ford emphasized its expanding global footprint in commercial work vehicles including medium-sized trucks, vans, pickup trucks and buses. Such vehicles are “often overlooked, but they provide strong growth potential,” Ford CEO Alan Mulally said.

While this may sound great to truck guys, one does wonder about Ford’s long-term profitably when focusing on one part of the market. Also, they don’t seem that concerned about the drivers who buy trucks to haul around the family. Look they will probably continue to dominate fleet sales and commercial, but it is questionable how many they will sell elsewhere.

Editor’s note: Ford’s Mike Levine (@mrlevine) tweeted at me to point out that Ford sells the SuperCrew, and very successfully. I think Tim’s point in the paragraph above was that Ford can’t overlook the importance of family trucks going forward, however, if that wasn’t his point (or if that point wasn’t clear), let it be known far and wide that Ford *does* sell trucks for families and they are concerned about that use. We just aren’t sure about the wisdom of having a focus on commercial business first.

Dodge had a lot fewer trucks, but really played up the awards they have won. This was especially true in being named North American Truck of the Year. The Execs were visibly relieved to have won.

Their displays were highlighted with awards and towing capacity. They also really tried to show how the bed boxes don’t take away room from the bed with a lumber display. In addition, they had a really cool “guts” display showing the truck without the cab/body.

    2013 NAIAS Wrap-up Thoughts - Dodge

This Dodge Power Wagon sure looks bad ass, but what purpose does it serve?

They also brought a pretty impressive looking crew cab Power Wagon. It was a cool looking ride (albeit really hard for me to get into), but many people looking at it really questioned how useful it was. Talking with an off-roader who spends a lot of time in Michigan, he just shook his head. There is no way that truck can go down any trail, it’s only use is in a wide open area like sand dunes. His question, “Why would someone buy a stock off-road truck for only one type of trail?” The Ford Raptor has a similar critic.

GM had several new trucks on the floor and spread out the Sierra from the Silverado. They stressed the new EcoTech motors and interior upgrades with two interior displays showing just the cab. They also had an interesting “museum-like” display of their instrument panel and doors (?). This was good, because the GM trucks were the only trucks on the floor that were locked and I couldn’t get into.

2013 NAIAS Wrap-up Thoughts - GM Instrument Panel

You think GM is proud of their instrument panel? Yet, it seems all these panels are starting to look the same.

The product Reps were really talking up the engine, aerodynamic modifications of the body style and instrument panel. They shied away from any real discussion on why they didn’t do a lot to upgrade any other components. Many in the media feel like GM really just upgraded an old truck without really striving for any big improvements. While the new engines are sexy looking and completely new according to the Rep, they are really just old engines refurbished.

Talking with the Rep about the lack of the “wow” factor, he conceded that looking at the truck, you don’t see it. His thought was that the “wow” factor would be in the details MPG, towing, weight and HP. And no, those numbers aren’t coming out anytime soon from what I heard.

Toyota only had the Tundra that towed the space shuttle. They focused their display on concept cars and didn’t even bring a Tacoma at all. It seemed to me that they were trying to avoid all the hoopla GM and Ford were creating by waiting until Chicago to do their unveiling. Time will tell if that strategy pays off.

Honda and Nissan didn’t even bother to bring any trucks. It was interesting to hear a Jose Munoz, senior vice president for sales and marketing at Nissan Americas, talk about trucks at a media round table.

“We understand that it is very important” to remain in the segment, Munoz said, according to PickupTrucks.com. “Full-size is where the potential is.”

And yet, they didn’t bring a single truck to the Auto Show. If the North American market is the supposed home to highly profitable full-size trucks and Detroit is the “largest” stage, why didn’t they bring any? Very curious.

2013 NAIAS Full-Size Truck Wrap - VIA Motors

We will have more on this X-Trux soon. I asked where the rocket launchers were.

VIA Motors had a really nice demonstration of their technology and I was able to speak with their sales guy and engineer. This will be in a future article. It is an interesting idea that could push other automakers to look at their technology. However, I overheard a few guys saying VIA motors is really a niche market and will have little real-world impact.

As the media days wrap-up, it was clear to me that the automakers aren’t focused on really improving full-size trucks. Instead, they are tweaking and expanding on similar ideas: direct injection, aerodynamics and dropping weight. Instead they are spending all their time and energy on passenger cars. Unless one of them rocks that boat, the real, low energy in the segment will leave people wanting for more.

  • 2014 Toyota Tundra Will Be at Chicago Auto Show

A Toyota source has confirmed that a new 2014 Toyota Tundra will be at the Chicago Auto Show. That’s right, it’s coming, just 4+ weeks away. Can you contain your excitement?!

2014 Toyota Tundra Chicago Auto Show

A Toyota source has confirmed that the new 2014 Toyota Tundra will be at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show.

At the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, a source told Tundraheadquarters.com that the new 2014 Toyota Tundra will be unveiled at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show that runs Feb 9 through 18. This confirmation is consistent with what we have been hearing for quite some time. Don’t fret we will hear the news on the media days of Feb 7 or 8 and we will be there live.

Unfortunately the news of an upcoming model means tight lips for all Toyota spokesman. They will not deny or confirm any “rumors” and are tight lipped when it comes to what new features it will have. We asked about diesel, rear locking differentials and new engine technology. All we got was a lot of “no comment.”

We have high hopes for the Tundra and quite frankly, we hope that Toyota does as well. With new trucks coming from GM, the Dodge Ram winning awards left and right and Ford’s F-150 selling so well, Toyota needs to decide if the Tundra will be a contender or a pretender.

Most critics love to point out how much Toyota has spent and how Toyota has supposedly fallen “short.” While we don’t really know how Toyota really views the truck, this much is true: it is time for Toyota to crank up the cool factor. Our bet says they will.

No news is good news right?

  • Chevy Towing Fail

Driving a truck up on a flatbed trailer to tow isn’t that hard is it? Apparently it is. Especially if they towing truck isn’t in PARK. Get your popcorn ready for this redneck comedy!

Click here to view the embedded video.

Really, you need to put the Dodge in Park prior to driving the Chevy up on it. No, get out of here!

Now we could make all sorts of domestic redneck truck owner jokes, but we think the video does that already. Next time you need some proof about the overwhelming lack of common sense in this country, go ahead and send around this video.

Special thanks to BangShift for putting this video up.

  • Chinese Toyota Tundra – No Kidding!

Recently spotted in China – a black Toyota Tundra Crewmax complete with off-road modifications and a black bicycle. Yep,  no kidding!

    Chinese Toyota Tundra

This Black Toyota Tundra was spotted in China. Yep, China!

Someone in the city of Shenzhen in Guangdong province of China was able to get this black, crewmax Toyota Tundra imported according to story in CarNewsChina.com. It also looks like they got a lot of customization done on it as well with blacked out windows, an after-market grille/bumper, roof rack and custom wheels. It is also apparent that they like black – a lot!

Chinese Toyota Tundra - Front View

We have to wonder if the truck has any problems driving down the Chinese streets that were built for smaller vehicles.

For some time now, Chinese citizens have been circumventing their own government by either building their own versions of luxury cars or importing them through a gray market. It seems that the Toyota Tundra is now part of this gray market.

The “gray market” exists when a Chinese dealer will order the vehicle from a West Coast U.S. dealer and have it shipped to China. While the Chinese Government officially doesn’t allow this type of import, they have been looking the “other way” in regards to these imports. The reason? The new wealthy citiznes that the economy in China has been creating are demanding more of these American trucks. The Chinese Government isn’t really interested in cracking down on the wealthy (as opposed to the poor) which might stifle their growing (shaky) economy. So, this means that many wealthy Chinese can import these vehicles will little concern for how the Government will react.

    Chinese Toyota Tundra- Street

The truck is definitely turning heads in China.

One thing is for sure, the truck definitely stands out on the streets of China in comparison to their smaller vehicles. I wonder how many “near” accidents it has caused due to gawking drivers.

  • White Most Popular Vehicle/Truck Color Again

In a world full of color, it seems consumers want a white/pearl truck. Is white/pearl really that awesome or a pain to keep clean?

White Most Popular Truck Color Again

White trucks are the most popular according to a paint survey. Sexy or a pain to clean?

For the past 60 years, DuPont has released their Automotive Color Popularity Report. This year, they found that globally 23% of all vehicles are white. White was also the top color in 2011. Apparently, this is the only report that looks at all global automotive color popularity and regional trends.

An article on Aftermarketnews.com says that while white/pearl has held steady over the past decade and is popular among most car segment. Historically though, it has been most popular in the truck segment.

Apparently, what has finally pushed it over the top if the pearl color which is gaining popularity in luxury cars.

    White Most Popular Vehicle Color-Chart

White reigns supreme again as the most popular vehicle color in the world.

“Today, white tri-coats are more readily applicable to the global manufacturing base and evoke quality and value among a variety of vehicle segments,” according to Nancy Lockhart, DuPont color marketing manager. “Solid whites have been seen in vanilla shades, stone shades and the current preference of bright whites.”

Black though is still a top choice and is widely popular in China. Silver wasn’t that far behind.

“Silver peaked during the start of the digital age between 2000 and 2006,” said Lockhart. “We’re seeing more luxury vehicle purchases now that the economy has started to stabilize, and vehicles painted black/black effect are seen as luxury status symbols in several key global markets.”

While this report is proof that white is a popular choice, we think Tundra pickups look great in all colors. How about you? What color is your truck?

  • Toyota Settles $1.1 Billion Class-Action Lawsuit – Not a Big Deal

The media has been swarming lately with Toyota’s tentative settlement of a class-action lawsuit around the unintended acceleration hub-bub a few years ago. Frankly, it really isn’t that big of a deal. Here’s why.

Toyota Settles $1.1 Billion Class-Action Suit

Toyota’s announced settlement of a $1.1 Billion class-action lawsuit isn’t that big of a deal. It is a smart public relations move, that’s all.

Before we begin, we have to reiterate that the unintended acceleration claim has largely turned out to be bogus. Despite NASA and several National Highway Traffic Safety Administration tests and experiments, no one has been able to replicate the issue. About the only thing that has come out of this issue is that a floor mat might have been to blame.

Now yes, there are plenty of people who say they had an issue with Toyota’s accelerating out of control, we just haven’t had any proof.

Why would Toyota then settle this class-action suit? It is a brilliant Public Relations move. Follow along here, Toyota could argue all day and night that the unintended acceleration issue is a hoax. There is no proof and it is simply driver error. Great, yet, that would mean Toyota is going to piss off a lot of potential customers. Rather, why not settle in a smart way. This way, hopefully those same customers will someday change their mind and come back to Toyota. The settlement really benefits Toyota then.

Look at the details of the settlement for proof of Toyota winning:

    • $250 million for customers who sold or turned-in lease vehicles at a loss.
    • $250 million in payments for owners whose vehicles can’t use the brake override system
    • $200-400 million to retrofit vehicles with brake override system*
    • $400 million for extended warranties
    • $200 million in court and legal fees

*Toyota will also retrofit a brake override system for its cars and fund new research into advanced safety technologies (win for Toyota).

This list of upgrades, extensions and payments is really Toyota’s way of saying that while we can’t find the problem, we will do whatever we can to stand by our customers. Toyota gets that they can’t win a public relations fight with the public on the problem. However, they can spend a chunk of change to take care of jilted owners.

Don’t mistake what we are saying. Toyota isn’t always perfect and they are prone to making mistakes. However, they have at many times helped out their customers by extending warranties like in the air pump extension and rusted frames. This is really smart on their part. And $1.1 Billion really isn’t that big of a deal in the long-term. Toyota has the money and this will not slow them down.

In the end, the recalls, the media coverage and the extensive testing related to this issue haven’t affected the brand’s image, according to a study, nor have they stopped Toyota from being the largest car maker in the world. Toyota is simply taking the necessary steps to move on from this publicity.

What do you think? Have does this settlement affect Toyota in your mind?
