  • Google Fiber Poles Is One April Fools’ Joke That Should Become Reality

Google loves to announce fake products and services on April Fools’ Day, and I’m fine with some products remaining pranks. Its latest joke product, however, would actually be pretty cool if it were real.

Google Fiber Poles is the first prank product to come out of Google Fiber, and it’s actually a pretty neat idea:

Google Fiber Poles actually presents a lot of problems that make this project impossible, but it would be great if Google made Fiber more ubiquitous around Kansas City. Installing more wireless access points would be the most obvious solution, but something similar to Google Fiber Poles that encourages people to work together in groups would be most welcome.

  • Batman And Superman Will Face Off In The Injustice Battle Arena Finale

Batman and Superman – the two characters that pretty much define the DC Universe. The two have come to blows in the past, and they will again in the Injustice: Gods Among Us Battle Arena finale.

Before we get to that, however, Batman and Superman had to emerge victorious over their opponents in the semi-finals. First up, Batman squared off against The Flash where Batman easily took the win. Of course, some YouTube commenters are not exactly pleased with the outcome – rightly pointing out that The Flash could handily beat Batman in a matter of seconds if the outcome was decided by anything other than voting.

The other matchup saw Superman taking on Green Lantern. Once again, votes decide the ultimate victor, but this fight is at least a little more balanced. Green Lantern can easily put up a decent fight against Superman, but the combined powers of Superman and Killer Croc were just too much to bear.

The final fight between Superman and Batman will air two weeks from now. Both characters are incredibly popular so it will be interesting to see which hero gets the most votes.

Injustice: Gods Among Us launches across the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U on April 16.

  • GDC 2013: Live Streaming API Coming To Games Courtesy Of YouTube

Gamers love watching other people play games. It’s the only way to explain of popularity of Let’s Plays and live streams on YouTube, Twitch.tv and other sites. The only problem is that those who do live streams must have video capture equipment or software thus preventing a number of players from broadcasting their exploits.

At GDC 2013, YouTube announced its intentions to change all that with a new API that allows game developers to integrate YouTube live streaming into their games. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 proved the API’s popularity last year when the game allowed players to live-stream matches without the use of any third-party program.

YouTube isn’t reserving live-streaming capabilities just for the hardcore crowd eiher. The API will be available to iOS and Android developers soon so mobile gamers can start sharing their screen with the world in real time.

An interesting aspect of the new API is that YouTube may be helping content creators monetize their streams. There are tools in the API that would allow live-streamers to drop ads in the middle of their stream. It’s unknown if the live streamer would actually be able to make money off of their content though. Some publishers have rules in regards to monetization of in-game video so those rules may be left up to them.

These APIs come at a time when YouTube faces stiff competition from other established, and more gamer centric, live streaming services like Twitch.tv. Twitch still requires extra software or hardware to stream, however, so YouTube’s APIs may just help bring more streamers and viewers to its side.

  • GDC 2013: Unreal Engine 4 Will Make You A Believer In The Next Generation

The next-generation of game consoles is quickly approaching, but there are some who claim that we don’t need new hardware. The argument usually focuses on how there’s still ways to squeeze more power out of the current generation of consoles, and how games still haven’t reached their full potential.

At GDC 2013, Epic Games smashed that argument to bits with its latest real-time demo of Unreal Engine 4. The technology on display just isn’t currently possible on existing hardware, and it’s exciting to think what developers will do with it once they have the power to do so.

The most exciting part about this tech demo is that it’s running on currently available hardware. Epic confirmed that the demo was running on a single, unmodified Nvidia GTX 680. So, we know that Unreal games built on the PC will look great, but it will be interesting to see how the engine works with the AMD hardware in the PS4 and next Xbox.

  • Is Native WebGL Support Coming To Internet Explorer 11?

For all of its talk of supporting open Web standards, Internet Explorer 10 still lacked one important part of the open Web ecosystem – WebGL. Sure, you could add it with a plugin, but Microsoft refused to add native support while Mozilla and Google do amazing things with it. That all may change, however, with Windows Blue.

Fremycompany reports that Internet Explorer 11, as seen in the recent leak of Windows Blue, contains hints in its code that Microsoft will finally be adding native support for WebGL. The only problem is that it’s not entirely functional yet:

I didn’t get webgl working, even by trying using iesl, hlsl and other combinations. So, it seems like WebGL interfaces are defined but not functional at this time.

As CNET points out, Microsoft did have a good reason to keep WebGL out of Internet Explorer until now. The company called it out as a security risk, and was concerned that malicious actors could hijack browsers using the technology. Still, this latest hint of incoming support may mean that Microsoft has patched up all the security holes it was concerned about.

There’s not much more to go on at this time beyond the initial hints, but it would be incredibly advantageous for the Web if Internet Explorer finally added native WebGL support. It’s quickly becoming one of the more important open Web standards as more people use it to make games and other graphic intensive content on the Web without plugins.

We’ve reached out to Microsoft to see if the Internet Explorer team is working on native WebGL support. We’ll update this story if they get back to us.

  • William Shatner’s Age Catches Up To Him In His Latest Fight With The Gorn

For an 82-year-old, William Shatner still looks incredibly young. That being said, it seems that his age is finally catching up to him. Despite that, he still holds his own against one of his oldest adversaries – the Gorn.

All of this is for the upcoming Star Trek: The Video Game. The story takes place between 2009′s Star Trek reboot and the latest film – Star Trek: Into Darkness. In the video game, Kirk and Spock must fight off a Gorn invasion.

Of course, this video only raises our collective hope that William Shatner will make a cameo in the newest game. He could prove an invaluable ally to future Kirk and Spock what with his incredible acting and charm.

  • Windows 8 Might Be Coming to 7-Inch Tablets

Windows 8 was obviously built with tablets in mind, but the OS only supports tablets with 1366×768 displays. That’s all going to change, and it could mean big things for Windows 8 going forward.

In a recent Windows Certification Newsletter, Microsoft announced that Windows 8 now supports a minimum resolution of 1024×768. The company says the new rule is for “partners exploring designs for certain markets.”

So, what does this mean? A lower resolution could point to Microsoft opening up to putting Windows 8 on smaller devices, including 7-inch tablets. The current stable of Windows 8 tablets all size in at either 9 or 10-inches, and the price reflects that. The high price commanded by the current stable of Windows 8 tablets has definitely been an obstacle for consumers, and a lower resolution, lower priced tablet may just be what the company needs.

The possibilities don’t stop at 7-inch tablets either. ZDNet speculates that Microsoft may be using its partnership with Nook to create a Windows-powered eReader that would have access to Barnes & Noble’s extensive collection of eBooks. The 1024×768 resolution would be a perfect fit as it would finally allow Microsoft to sell cheap hardware.

Of course, all of this is mere speculation for now. All we know is that Microsoft is relaxing its certification requirements. It’s too early to tell if OEMs will start making 7-inch tablets, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we start to hear something along those lines later this year.

  • eBay Expects To Grow Revenue By 50 Percent In 2015

Earlier this year, eBay posted revenue growth of 21 percent year-over-year. Over the next three years, it hopes to increase revenue even more.

In a meeting with investors, eBay announced that it plans to continue growing through 2015 thanks to a “commerce revolution.” This revolution will be spearheaded by the transition to mobile as more and more people take to the Web to buy and sell.

“Led by mobile, a commerce revolution is under way,” said eBay Inc. President and CEO John Donahoe. “Technology is creating a new web-enabled retail interface, a new seamless, multiscreen commerce experience that connects consumers anytime, anywhere. This will expand shopping beyond conventional store environments and e-commerce sites. How we shop is being transformed, and eBay Inc. intends to be a leader in this new commerce world.”

This outlook is not only good for investors, but for the millions of people who sell on eBay. In fact, the company thinks it will enable $300 billion of global commerce in 2015, compared to $175 billion in 2012. It also hopes to grow its revenue from by over 50 percent to $21.5 billion in 2015.

So, how is eBay going to do this? The company has a three pronged approach:

  • An expanded addressable market. eBay Inc. is no longer just an e-commerce company, but a global commerce leader, Donahoe said. That means the company now has growth opportunities across the estimated $10 trillion commerce market.
  • Mobile commerce leadership and innovation. eBay Inc.’s mobile innovation capabilities across all operating systems and devices are a competitive advantage, Donahoe said. In 2013, the company expects to generate $20 billion of mobile commerce and payments volume.
  • A strong portfolio of technology assets and capabilities. The company’s core businesses and assets well position eBay to capitalize and win in the new commerce environment.
  • As for other eBay properties, the company expects its Marketplaces business to reach revenues of $11.5 billion in 2015, or a 14 percent compound annual growth rate. PayPal is also expected to reach revenue growth of $10.5 billion, or a 22 percent compound annual growth rate.

  • This Robot Jellyfish Will One Day Patrol Our Oceans

Scientists have a fascination with taking animals, turning them into robots and making them far more terrifying. DARPA has been doing this for years, and Virginia Tech is joining the movement:

Virginia Tech College of Engineering researchers have unveiled a life-like, autonomous robotic jellyfish the size and weight of a grown man, 5 foot 7 inches in length and weighing 170 pounds, as part of a U.S. Navy-funded project.

The prototype robot, nicknamed Cyro, is a larger model of a robotic jellyfish the same team – headed by Shashank Priya of Blacksburg, Va., and professor of mechanical engineering at Virginia Tech – unveiled in 2012. The earlier robot, dubbed RoboJelly, is roughly the size of a man’s hand, and typical of jellyfish found along beaches.

Virginia Tech: Autonomous Robotic Jellyfish from virginiatech on Vimeo.

I don’t particularly like jellyfish, but this robot looks harmless enough. I doubt it will turn into a nightmare machine like other animal-based robots. Still, the potential is there – the robotic uprising could see these robots being upgraded to man o’ wars.

  • Ouya Starts Shipping To Kickstarter Backers

It’s been almost nine months since Ouya, the little Android game console that could, smashed Kickstarter records. Now the console is ready to make its way into the hands of those who made it such a success.

Ouya announced that its Android games console will start shipping out to early Kickstarter backers today. It’s unknown in what order the consoles will ship, but rest assured that all early backers will get their hands on the new console in the coming days.

Backers receiving an Ouya in the coming days will want to keep a few things in mind as they start playing around with the new console:

  • When you first boot it up, you’ll experience our first update. This will either be super fast (seconds) or allow you to get a drink (minutes) based on your connection speed. Eventually, we want to do these updates in the background…
  • You’ll need a credit/debit card to download games. All games are still free to try. Your card will only be charged if you buy content you love. We do want valid payment information for everyone. This is to ensure that game developers can get paid when you love their game.
  • OUYA supports up to four controllers. And, because we support Bluetooth, you can pair other devices as well. We are testing now and will start publishing a list of devices soon.
  • Those who are getting an Ouya now are getting what is essentially an experience that is still in development. The console will not officially hit store shelves until June 4, but the team is hoping to collect data from early backers to improve the experience for everybody come launch. They will collecting ideas for improvement starting in April with a planned AMA on Reddit, and other communication vehicles.

On a final note, the Ouya team says that there are now 104 games published on the console’s storefront. For a launch lineup, it’s not bad. Of course, most of the games are ports of existing titles on Android or iOS, but these titles have been developed with widescreen HD gaming in mind so the experience might just be better than what you can currently get on mobile devices.

  • Check Out Nintendo’s Awesome Poltergust 5000 Replica

Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon officially kicked off the Year of Luigi this week. To help celebrate the launch, Nintendo partnered with game art community iam8bit to create a replica of Luigi’s Poltergust 5000.

Now we just need to strap a Luigi hat on Reggie Fils-Aime, give him this Poltergust 5000, and send him off with Shigeru Miyamoto to hunt ghosts.

  • Learn How NASA Uses Google Earth For Space Missions

Google has shown that it has an interest in space what with its founders funding space missions, and the company sending Bugdroid to space. Beyond that, though, the folks at Google create tools that are invaluable to mission strategists at NASA.

In the latest Google Tech Talk, Matt Deans of NASA’s Intelligent Robotics Group, discusses how the U.S. space agency uses a variety of Web tools and Google Earth to create the Exploration Ground Data System, or xGDS. Here’s more:

Did you know that NASA uses Google Earth for mission planning and real-time mission operations? Are you curious about the software NASA is developing to carry out future human and robot missions? Would you like to know how modern Web frameworks can be used for data-driven field science?

The Exploration Ground Data System (xGDS) is a suite of reusable software tools for human and robotic missions. xGDS supports mission planning, ingesting and managing geo-referenced and time-series data, and visualization/analysis. xGDS is highly modular, Web-based and makes extensive use of Apache, Django, the Google Earth plug-in, JQuery, and
    MySQL.

In this talk, I will discuss the use cases that xGDS was designed to support and describe how it is implemented. I will show how the Intelligent Robotics Group has used xGDS for exploration missions involving astronauts (Arizona), planetary rovers (Canada and Hawaii), and personal submarines (British Columbia and Florida). And, I’ll briefly talk about how xGDS can be used for other applications, such as crisis and disaster response.

  • Black Adam Joins The Cast Of Injustice: Gods Among Us

It seemed unlikely that NetherRealm Studios would announce even more characters for the already star-studded Injustice: Gods Among Us. The studio is full of surprises, however, as it has announced another new character for the DC Comics fighter.

It was announced that Black Adam will be joining the cast of Injustice: Gods Among Us. For those unaware, Black Adam is the villain/anti-hero opposite of Captain Marvel/Shazam. It’s unclear as to how he or Shazam will fit into the story, but Black Adam’s move set looks to be a more aggressive version of Shazam’s.

With this latest announcement, the Injustice roster is now at 24 characters. The developers may have to start looking into more obscure characters if they aim to add anymore. If they do start to add more obscure characters, I can only hope that Mr. Banjo at least makes a cameo appearance.

Injustice: Gods Among Us will launch across the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U on April 16.

  • Angry Birds Star Wars Travels To Cloud City

Back in January, Rovio released a new expansion for Angry Birds Star Wars called “Escape from Hoth.” The level pack covered the first half of The Empire Strikes Back, and now a new expansion finishes the story.

Rovio announced today that the Cloud City level pack is now available for Angry Birds Star Wars. Players can look forward to new levels, new gameplay features, and even a new character from this level pack:

  • Explore Cloud City in an all new episode!
  • Battle your way through 20 new Bespin levels!
  • Introducing steam gameplay mechanics.
  • Unlock the new Boba Fett Missions by collecting all 5 hidden rocket packs, via promotion code, or via in-app purchase!
  • Brag about your trophies using the new Twitter integration!
  • The Boba Fett pig sounds awesome, but I feel like there’s a missed opportunity here for a Lando Calrissian bird. It would be even better if the bird was voiced by Billy Dee Williams. I can dream, right?

Putting my unattainable dreams aside, you can grab Angry Birds Star Wars from Google Play and the Apple Appstore today.

  • Activision Brings The Uncanny Valley To Games

Activision may be perceived as a money-making machine that just throws out the same game every year, but the company is heavily invested in the future of gaming technology. Take for instance this new real-time face rendering tech the company unveiled at GDC.

Well, that’s certainly unnerving. Here I thought Heavy Rain was pretty realistic, but this is in an entirely different league.

    Here’s how they did it:

This animated character is being rendered in real-time on current video card hardware, using standard bone animation. The rendering techniques, as well as the animation pipeline are being presented at GDC 2013, “Next Generation Character Rendering” on March 27. The original high resolution data was acquired from Light Stage Facial Scanning and Performance Capture by USC Institute for Creative Technologies, then converted to a 70 bones rig, while preserving the high frequency detail in diffuse, normal and displacement composite maps. It is being rendered in a DirectX11 environment, using advanced techniques to faithfully represent the character’s skin and eyes.

For another example, here’s a screenshot of another face created using the same tech:

For more examples and information on how Activision achieved this, check out their blog.

  • AT&T Opens Galaxy S 4 Preorders On April 16, Will Cost $250 Under Contract

The Samsung Galaxy S 4 is one of the most anticipated smartphone launches of the year, and AT&T wants consumers to know that it will be the first carrier to start offering the device. In fact, consumers can start preordering it next month.

AT&T announced today that Galaxy S 4 preorders will start on April 16. If you go for a two-year contract, the price will come in at $250. There’s no mention of the off contract price, but expect it to be expensive.

There’s no word on when the phone will actually launch, but you can probably expect to see it in May. That’s at least what T-Mobile thinks as the company’s CEO said the device would be launching on its network on May 1. If true, we could see a late April launch on AT&T.

There has been nothing but radio silence from the other carriers in regards to their Galaxy S 4 plans. You can probably expect to see a Verizon launch not soon after the AT&T launch though. The price should remain pretty consistent across all carriers as well.

If you’re dead set on getting the Galaxy S 4 with AT&T, you can set up shop at the carrier’s landing page. You can also give ‘em your email address so you know exactly when preorders open for the new device.

  • New Facebook Games Section For Timeline Goes Live

At GDC yesterday, Facebook unveiled the Games Developer Center. The hub promises to contain all the information a game developer needs to make games for Facebook or Facebook integrated games for mobile devices. That wasn’t the only announcement, however, as Facebook is also bringing games to the newly redesigned timeline.

Facebook announced that it will begin rolling out the new Games section to timeline and users’ About pages. The section will only appear for those who have played one or more social games in the past 30 days, or those who have liked at least one game on Facebook.

New Games Section For Timeline Goes Live Today

It should be noted that the Games section contains the same privacy controls as other sections on timeline. A user can mark a game’s app privacy to “close friends” and only those designated as such will be able to see the game on their timeline.

If you want your game to be a little more special, developers can use Open Graph to create a stand-alone app section for their game. Players can then place the game in its own section of timeline for all to see. You can learn more about that here.

As for the weekly bug report, Facebook says that 33 bugs were fixed while 60 were assigned for further review. You can check out the full bug fix list at the blog post.
