  • Malicious Web Site / Malicious Code: New Zbot campaign comes in a PDF

    04.13.10 04:00 PM

Websense Security Labs? has received several reports of a Zbot trojan campaign spreading via email. We have seen over 2200 messages so far.

Zbot (also known as Zeus) is an information stealing trojan (infostealer) collecting confidential data from each infected computer. The main vector for spreading Zbot is a spam campaign where recipients are tricked into opening infected attachments on their computer.

This new variant uses a malicious PDF file which contains the threat as an embedded file. When recipients open the PDF, it asks to save a PDF file called Royal_Mail_Delivery_Notice.pdf. The user falsely assumes that the file is just a PDF, and therefore safe to store on the local computer. The file, however, is really a Windows executable. The malicious PDF launches the dropped file, taking control of the computer. At time of writing this file has a 20% anti-virus detection rate (SHA1 : f1ff07104b7c6a08e06bededd57789e776098b1f).

The threat creates a subdirectory under %SYSTEM32% with the name "lowsec" and drops the "local.ds" and "user.ds" files. These are configuration files for the threat. It also copies itself into %SYSTEM32% as "sdra64.exe" and modifies the registry entry "%SOFTWARE%\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Userinit" to launch itself during system startup. When it runs, it injects malicious code into the Winlogon.exe instance in memory. This Zbot variant connects to malicious remote sever in China using an IP address of 59.44.[removed].[removed]:6010.

Screen shot of the email message:

    Saves the malicious embedded file

Adobe Acrobat Reader shows a warning about launching the file:

The problem lies deep inside the PDF file format, as originally published by in this blog post.

Websense Messaging and Websense Web Security customers are protected against this attack.

  • Malicious Web Site / Malicious Code: Fake Apple App Store Malicious Spam

    03.23.10 04:00 PM

Websense Security Labs? ThreatSeeker? Network has discovered that Apple’s App Store has become the latest target for email attacks and spam. App Store is the service provided by Apple Inc. as a platform to purchase and download applications for iPhone®, iPod touch®, and iPad?. The attack comes in the form of a fake invoice email.

With Apple’s App Store being one of the most popular shopping platforms for multimedia, this kind of App Store invoice email is familiar to users and tends to be received frequently. As demonstrated here, cyber-criminals clearly jump at a chance to spread their spam using any available means.

The content in this campaign resides on compromised Web sites and serves a combination of pharmaceutical spam along with exploits that are delivered in the background. Some of the messages serve only pharmaceutical spam and some combine spam with exploits. In the example below, clicking the link in the message redirects the user to a site with a single link labeled "visit". In the background, a known exploit pack called "Eleonore" is delivered to the user’s machine. If the user clicks on the link, they are redirected to a "Canadian Pharmacy" Web site. In this particular attack instance the file dropped by the exploit pack has 29% detection rate.

    Screen shot of the email:

Exploits are delivered on this page in the background:

    03.22.10 04:00 PM

Websense Security Labs? ThreatSeeker? Network has discovered a new wave of email attacks targeting the Skype Email Toolbar this Monday. Until now, the amount of the spam is not large, but we believe it will increase.

The spam contain a SkypeToolbarForOutlook.zip file in the attachment, which looks deceptive but in fact it’s a backdoor trojan that has a very low AV detection.

    CELEBRATING UPGRADES AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE
Dedication of upgrades at MLK Therapeutic Center

Los Angeles – The City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, in partnership with Councilmember Bernard C. Parks, the Department of Public Works’ Bureau of Engineering, General Services and the Community Development Department (CDD), dedicated improvements at Martin Luther King, Jr. Therapeutic Center in South Los Angeles.

The $1.2 million renovation project included construction of a new basketball court, tennis court, swing set, irrigation system, nighttime lighting and security camera system. The Architectural Division of the Bureau of Engineering in the Department of Public Works designed the upgrades; the city’s Department of General Services performed the work and CDD funded the improvement project.

The dedication ceremony was also an African American Heritage Month celebration and coincided with the 20-year anniversary of the release of Nelson Mandela from prison. Mandela, like Martin Luther King Jr., was a fierce advocate for equality and civil rights.

The recent upgrades comprise the third of four phases of upgrades planned for the site. Phase one consisted of renovation of the baseball field and the addition of a handicap-accessible playground. Phase two involved the construction of the Mary McLeod Bethune Library, a LEED-certified green building, and phase four will involve the construction of a synthetic soccer field.

The new security camera system features 10 surveillance cameras that will be monitored at two separate locations, and new lighting was installed at the tennis and basketball courts. In addition to the universally-accessible playground, the park also includes a therapeutic recreation center, which provides a variety of programs for people with disabilities in South Los Angeles.

Children from adjacent Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School attended the dedication, as well as City Engineer Gary Lee Moore and Pacific Region Superintendent Mark Mariscal from Recreation and Parks.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Therapeutic Center is located at 3916 South Western Avenue and provides a variety of programs for people with disabilities ages 5 to adult in the South Los Angeles area. Center activities encourage and empower individuals to express themselves through recreation activities. These programs help participants to be creative, develop motor skills, increase self-esteem and enhance their leisure interests. For more information about the center call (213) 847-0878.

IpInfo is a replacement for the standard ‘view users ip’ option in
vBulletin. Normally when you click on the view ip button in a user’s post
you’ll only see his or hers ip address and host name.

With IpInfo you’ll get more information. Besides the ip address and host
name you will also see what other users have posted with the same ip
address. That feature can be really good for spotting clones.

Another thing IpInfo will show you is what other ips this user has posted
with and how many times. Could be useful when you want to ban all of the
ips of a user and not just the one of that post.

  • Update: New graduated enrollment fee

    03.10.10 12:47 PM

The new graduated new member enrollment fee goes into effect April 1st, 2010. This means clubs will no longer pay a flat fee of $50 (Tier A), $25 (Tier B), or $15 (Tier C).

    What you should know:

    • The new fee applies to all clubs in Kiwanis-Tiers A, B and C.
    • The fee will be based upon the date the new member is entered at Kiwanis. So, if a club sends an "add" in January for someone who joined two months ago, they will be charged the January rate. The graduated enrollment fee brings the member into Kiwanis, until the club is billed in October 2010.
    • Districts will decide whether to implement a similar fee structure. Kiwanis International will continue to charge the current fee, if applicable.
    • The attached rate applies only to new members of existing clubs. The current rate for charter members of a new club remains in effect. Members joining a new club after the charter presentation will be charged the new member fee for an existing club.

View a spreadsheet of the new graduated structure.

Should you need further assistance, please contact Member Services at 1-800-549-2647, ext. 411 (United States and Canada) or 1-317-875-8755, ext. 411 (worldwide).

  • LAPD Pioneers Circle

Topanga Area is looking forward to building three successful youth programs. It is our goal, through our youth programs to decrease the risk of gang involvement, recruit for future careers in law enforcement and provide fun and educational activities for our youth.

These programs will have a positive impact not only on the youth of the area but the community as a whole. ~ Captain John A. Sherman ~ Commanding Officer Topanga Area.

The Chatsworth Kiwanis joined the “Pioneers’ Circle” of the Topanga Police Youth Board by donating $1,000 toward the support of youth programs at the Topanga Police Station. Donations fund such items as supplies, snacks, athletic equipment, uniforms, recreational and cultural outings.

LAPD Cadets – The Los Angeles Police Cadets (formerly "Explorers") Program has been a very successful youth program. The purpose of the Explorer program is to provide special training to the youth that are preparing themselves for a career in law enforcement. Goals of the Explorer Program are to recruit young men and women (ages 14-21) to prepare them for future careers in law enforcement, encourage them toward being contributing citizens to their community, and developing positive relationships between the police and the youth.

Police Activity League – P.A.L. is a youth crime prevention program that relies on educational, athletic and other recreational activities to cement a bond of trust and understanding between police officers and the youth in our community. This bond of respect for police officers and the law is beneficial to the young person, the police officer, the neighborhood, and the business community. PAL serves disadvantaged youth, ages 7-17. ~ Thank you Officer Godfrey!

Jeopardy Program – The Jeopardy Program is gang prevention/ intervention program for boys and girls ages 8 through 17 and their parents. Jeopardy combines the strength of the community, neighborhood schools and the police department to effect positive, lifelong attitudinal changes in the young people so as to have a positive impact on the community. Jeopardy targets "at risk" children, offering a variety of educational and physical projects, from tutoring to martial arts. The goals of the Jeopardy Program are to reduce truancy, increase graduation rates and improve life-affirming skills with a end goal of decreasing gang and crime involvement.
