  • Marc Faber: 15% Fall Coming For Stocks

    Faber

Surprise! Mr. BoomGloomDoom sees doom… or at least a 20% decline in equities.

    Bloomberg:

Faber predicted at the beginning of March a 20 percent decrease if the index reached a new high. The S&P 500 has tumbled 11 percent since reaching 1,217.28 on April 23, the strongest level since the days after the September 2008 bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. Faber advised investors to buy U.S. stocks on March 9, 2009, when the index reached its lowest level since 1996.

“The market became very overbought in mid-April,” Faber said in a Bloomberg Radio interview today with Tom Keene. “The S&P could still decline by another 10 percent, maybe 15 percent.”

  • Always Walk in the Tracks

“Walk in the tracks,” 1st Sgt Stephen Cummings told me as we walked toward the Helmand River. I was shooting some video, and veered off a little. Then, not looking where I was going, I veered off again.

“I said walk in the tracks! You know why I say that, don’t you?” He reminded me that any ground that hasn’t been run over by a vehicle could potentially contain an IED.  So, I made sure to stay to in the tracks.

1st Sgt Stephen Cummings oversees 31 LAVs used for gear and personnel

1st Sgt Cummings is a member of the Marines’ 1st LAR. The 43-year-old originally from Memphis, oversees the 31 light armored vehicles in Charlie Company that transport passengers and supplies.  He’s based at South Station, a remote base south of the river that has even fewer creature comforts than FOB Payne. There is no refrigeration. So, their bottled drinking water comes in two temperatures, warm or hot.

Cummings and his wife Tamara have two children, Sean, 15 and Lauren, 7.  But his right hand man, Lance Cpl Brandon Foley is just getting started.

LAV-log driver, Lance Cpl Brandon Foley

The 25 year old LAV driver got married to his wife, Evilina, on April 5th, exactly one month before shipping out to Afghanistan.

He’s going home in December. But unlike his boss who’s been a Marine for 23 years, Brandon plans to leave the Corps.

“I want to work for the FBI and fight cyber-crimes,” he told me.

He plans to finish up his degree in computer science after his service ends in July.

  • Fiat Asks Facebook Users to Pick Logo for American 500

One of the many changes involved in bringing the Fiat 500 from Europe to the U.S. will apparently be the addition of new exterior badges. A photo posted on the Facebook page for Fiat USA is asking viewers to vote on the logo design for the American-market Fiat 500.

Current Euro-market cars subtly incorporate the “500″ script into chrome trim on the license-plate brow and on the side moldings, whereas the U.S. version will probably carry more obvious badging. The choices are variants of the word “Cinquecento,” Italian for “500″ and employed on Fiats of yore. Based on the current comments, design four seems to be winning. If you want to vote for it or one of the other designs, click here and leave a comment.

  • Swimming Lessons for Toddlers – Approved!

American Academy of Pediatrics now agrees to enrolling children under the age of four to swimming lessons. Children below 1 year old were not recommended to still have the lessons since they still have motor or cognitive disabilities which poses them not to be ready for swimming classes. Just a few years ago, the group apalled the idea of letting the toddlers undergo swimming lessons as it gives the parents and their children a false sense of security. However, few studies showed that toddler would less likely drown if they had undergone swimming lessons. But still, the group does not also advice all children to undergo the classes.

According to AAP report, drowning is the second-leading cause of death for children ages 1-19. “Children need to learn to swim,”said in the report. They recommended a multilayered safety approach since even children who have advanced swimming skills can still drown. They also state that parents must learn how to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation also known as CPR. The policy also reiterates the importance of a four sided fence around a pool that can cut the drowning risk by half. And they also warned  against the use of inflatable swimming aids as these can easily lose air and “are not designed to keep swimmers safe”.

Keep the children safe for the summer season as people choose to go swimming to cool down.

  • Supreme Court rules NFL teams not single entity for antitrust purposes

[JURIST] The US Supreme Court [official website; JURIST news archive] on Monday ruled [opinion, PDF] unanimously in American Needle v. NFL [Cornell LII backgrounder; JURIST report] that the National Football League (NFL) [league website] and its member teams are not a single entity that is exempt from rule of reason claims under Section 1 of the Sherman Antitrust Act [text]. The US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit ruled [opinion, PDF] that the NFL and its member teams are a single entity under the Sherman Act. Reversing the decision below, Justice John Paul Stevens wrote:

Football teams that need to cooperate are not trapped by antitrust law. “[T]he special characteristics of this industry may provide a justification” for many kinds of agreements. The fact that NFL teams share an interest in making the entire league successful and profitable, and that they must cooperate in the production and scheduling of games, provides a perfectly sensible justification for making a host of collective decisions. But the conduct at issue in this case is still concerted activity under the Sherman Act that is subject to s. 1 analysis.

The case was remanded to the district court for further proceedings.

The NFL and its 32 member teams teams reached an agreement with Reebok [corporate website] to license and sell consumer headwear and clothing with the respective teams’ logos and not to grant licenses to Reebok’s competitors for 10 years. The antitrust suit was brought by American Needle [corporate website], which argued that the contract violated the Sherman Act.

  • Frank Says FinReg Conference Committee Will Be Mostly Closed-Door

Sunlight is the best disinfectant. For that reason, Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) has endorsed airing on C-SPAN the conference committee’s negotiations, as the panel of legislators merges the House and Senate versions of financial regulatory reform. But wait! Now it seems the conference committee might not air negotiations — just the discussions right before the committee votes to ratify individual parts of the final bill.

    Politico reports:

When lawmakers are ready to ratify their decisions, Frank said they will go into an open session to debate and vote on changes to the bill. He called this kind of conference “old-fashioned” — and it would be a notable change from recent past practice in Congress — but it might be only a daylong session at the end of weeks of closed-door talks. And if you’re anticipating a quaint throwback to a less partisan Capitol, think again.

    And Frank explains:

“The negotiations will go on in private,” Frank said, “but the results of any discussion are going to have to be voted on. The House will vote to offer this in the Senate, all of the decisions will be made, accommodations may be reached privately — that’s where human beings work — but nothing will be ratified without a public debate.”

If that is indeed how the conference committee proceeds, it might as well be done entirely behind closed doors. There is no effective difference. The lobbying effort will be epic. And the public will have far less information about which legislators are fighting for which carve-outs, and what is traded for what.

2011 Ford Mustang GT modified by Evolution Performance – Click above to watch the video after the jump

There’s no doubt that the 2011 Mustang GT is one of the most potent ponycars to ever come from Ford, but to the Mustang faithful, a big part of its legacy will be how it takes to the aftermarket. The new 5.0-liter V8 seems to be off to a good start, with at least two different modified 2011 Mustangs already achieving ten-second time slips at the dragstrip.

The first to achieve the feat was JPC Racing, who had their 2011 Mustang out at the track within 24 hours of receiving the car. Using 4.56 gears, beefier upper and lower control arms, racing slicks and a 100 shot of nitrous, JPC’s ‘Stang nailed a best time of 10.96 seconds @ 125.75 mph. A short time later, the boys at Evolution Performance nailed a 10.88 @ 126.66 run using just 3.73 gears, a prototype cold air intake, Eaton Trutrac differential, D.O.T. approved racing tires and a 100 shot of nitrous.

While the numbers themselves aren’t all that impressive, the simplicity of the modifications and the brief time in which they were developed surely are. We can’t wait to see what the various tuners around the country can do once they have time to develop more parts for the new Mustang. You can watch both of the runs in the videos posted after the jump.

  • DNA from millions of newborn babies is secretly stored on NHS database

Via Prison Planet.com » Prison Planet

    UK Daily Mail
    May 24, 2010

DNA taken from millions of newborn babies is quietly being stored by hospitals without proper parental consent.

The blood samples, taken in heel-prick tests that check for serious conditions, can be accessed by police, coroners and medical researchers, Freedom of Information Act requests reveal.

Despite Government guidelines advising hospitals to destroy the DNA after five years, some facilities have kept them on file for more than 20 years – prompting fears that a covert database is being created.

Campaigners claim the 32-page leaflets – explaining that newborns’ DNA will be stored – handed to new mothers, does not constitute consent for hospitals to carry out further research.

Nor, they say, does it make clear the samples could be accessed by the police to identify people involved in crimes.

And, although the DNA of each child is stored anonymously, The UK Newborn Screening Programme Centre, which oversees the use of samples, say they could be linked to hospital admissions and the child could be identified that way.

Wasabi, the fiery sushi condiment has been shown to have an assortment of healing
    benefits.

    This member
of the cabbage family can do everything from help reduce the growth of bacteria that causes
cavities, increase circulation, and promote oxygenation of the
cellular tissue when topically taken to help you get
    over a hangover
, plump a sexy pout when applied to
women’s lips, and act as an aphrodisiac when consumed by men!

Historically, the potent plant was prided for its antimicrobial
properties and used by Japanese natives to protect from food poisoning.
It has also been proven as a natural antibacterial agent with a high
concentration of potassium, calcium, vitamin C, and phytochemicals,
which strengthen the body’s antioxidant defenses and aid the skin
    against free radicals.

Its power transcends just ingesting, and wasabi has been shown as equally
beneficial when applied topically to the skin. Which, naturally, made
the skincare industry and its inexhaustible search for interesting
    beauty-making ingredients take note.

    Seduced by wasabi’s stimulating

    Make your own:

Wasabi massage oil: Combine ¼ cup vegetable oil and ¼ cup light sesame
oil in a small saucepan. Heat on low for 2 to 3 minutes or until warm
but NOT boiling or smoking. Immediately remove from heat and stir in ½
teaspoon wasabi paste. Be sure to use a wooden spoon since plastic can leach
    out chemicals.

Cover and let cool for at least 1 hour. Add 5 drops of
vitamin E oil (you can pop a vitamin oil pill if you have one), and stir
    until mixed in. Massage!

    Buy it ready-made:

  • Audi A8 super saloon getting factory-installed HSDPA hotspot

The Audi A8 is already a nerd’s wet dream with more gadgets and technology than any baby boomer can handle. But Audi wasn’t done with the available option lists, though. Now buyers can order an HSDPA hotspot modem directly from the factory. Unlike other options — like Autonet — this system is polished and seemingly beautifully integrated into the vehicle. This is the future.

Autonet is GM’s and Chrysler’s high-speed provider of choice. This system is a bolt-on solution. The self-contained device, just needs power and a subscription to broadcast WiFi throughout the vehicle. But while it’s a one-size-fits-all solution, it’s a tad ugly and Audi doesn’t do ugly.

Audi’s system is integrated totally into the vehicle. From the press release.

Using the WLAN hotspot is remarkably simple. To activate Internet access with speeds up to 7.2 Mbit/s, the driver merely needs to insert a data-capable SIM card into the Bluetooth online car phone. Alternatively, an Internet connection can be established via Bluetooth by using a compatible mobile phone with a SIM Access Profile. Any existing mobile phone contract can be used for this – often coupled with a flat-rate data plan.

So yeah, you just slip in a SIM card and you’re off. Hopefully Audi’s owner, VW, plans to offer this cross-platform rather than keeping it tied down to a $100k car. The world doesn’t need cars with Tegra-powered Google Earth navigation. But we need rolling hotspots and now.

  • Explanation of ‘Lost’ Series Finale

Lost Finale bound to be complicated though there were some parts of the episode that were straightforward. The two and a half hour last episode brought closure on some big questions and to the story of the Oceanic 815 passengers. The episode gave touching flashes as the rest of them awakened to their island past. Jack, who was the last one to block his memories, arrived at Eloise Hawking’s old church and saw his father’s coffin. It was because Christian was really appearing to him.

The episode was made in a way to bring the survivors back together after they died. Living together made them overcome their issues and problems in life and coming back together once more to finally move on for good in death. At the end Jack learns to let go as he welcomes the friendship and love that he usually rejected on the island. His sacrifices saved the island and they were finally together on the other side, ready to move on. There were no final twists about the island and its nature which was the only incidication that the new leadership of Ben and Hurley have led to a new golden age. The last episode brings evertything back to the season to explain six side-flashes where Oceanic flight lands at LAX and everyone goes about their happy way is a way of showing – people waiting for afterlife still hang out until they will be ready to “let go”.

Park it, Ashton! There’s a new Sheriff raising through the social ranks of Twitter, and professional prankster Ashton Kutcher doesn’t seem too pleased about his Tweetin’ crown being snatched by a pop princess.

Over the weekend, Britney Spears soared past Ashton in Twitter followers, netting nearly 10,000 more devotees than Mr. Demi Moore — one of the world’s first celebrity Tweeters and the first person to attract 1 million followers on the site. At last count, Britney had 4,951,801 followers to Ashton’s 4,942,273.

Spears only sporadically posts updates to her Twitter, and Ashton — an avid updater — hinted that he wasn’t happy at being asked about his fall from social networking grace at a recent press junket for his new movie with Katherine Heigl, Killers.

  • Study: Many Sunscreens May Be Accelerating Cancer

Via Prison Planet.com » Sci Tech

    AOL News
    May 24, 2010

Almost half of the 500 most popular sunscreen products may actually increase the speed at which malignant cells develop and spread skin cancer because they contain vitamin A or its derivatives, according to an evaluation of those products released today.

AOL News also has learned through documents and interviews that the Food and Drug Administration has known of the potential danger for as long as a decade without alerting the public, which the FDA denies.

The study was released with Memorial Day weekend approaching. Store shelves throughout the country are already crammed with tubes, jars, bottles and spray cans of sunscreen.

The white goop, creams and ointments might prevent sunburn. But don’t count on them to keep the ultraviolet light from destroying your skin cells and causing tumors and lesions, according to researchers at Environmental Working Group.

In their annual report to consumers on sunscreen, they say that only 39 of the 500 products they examined were considered safe and effective to use.
