  • Chrysler prevailed in three more arbitrations against dealerships

2010 Chrysler Sebring ConvertibleChrysler Group is keeping score of arbitration rulings. So far, the carmaker has had eight wins and only one loss. The decisions for the latest three wins were handed down very recently.

These cases involved the following dealerships: Hinckley Dodge in Ogden, Utah (which only sold Dodge); Tenafly Chrysler Jeep in Tenafly, N.J.; and Midway Motors in Framingham, Mass (which sold Chrysler and Jeep). Hinckley and Midway competed with Project Genesis stores nearby while Genesis stores carried all four Chrysler brands. The company’s goal is to convert its entire dealer network to Genesis dealerships by the end of 2011. In a statement, Chrysler revealed that during the arbitration hearings, it gave evidence illustrating that it used “sound business judgment” in restructuring its dealer network. In the Hinckley case, the arbitrator gave much weight to Chrysler’s Genesis strategy. In the May 17 decision, arbitrator Robert M. Anderson said that Chrysler will organize the Ogden marketplace in a way that “more closely coincides with its plan to implement Genesis.”

  • Mt St Helens

Where were you on May 18, 1980? If you were living in the Pacific Northwest, you might remember the dramatic eruption of the Mt St Helens volcano. Portland Blogger, Ron Beasley provided his memories and pictures of this time in a moving piece.

One of the memories I have is of my friend Bob Kaseweter who had a cabin at Spirit Lake. He went up to the lake on May 18, 1980 to clean out his cabin. That was the last day of the life of a person who was full of life and loved to live it on the edge. He died on the edge and I am sure that he was thrilled the last few seconds of his life. His body was never found.

Check out his photos and his story.

  • LG Fathom launching soon, shows up in Best Buy for $100 bucks a pop

Oh, LG Fathom; like the HTC HD2, you’re one of Windows Mobile 6.5’s last hurrahs — a final spirited cry as the hawks circle over head. Packing a 1Ghz processor, a full touchscreen and slide-out QWERTY keyboard, it’s a solid piece of hardware prematurely plagued to obsolescence by a dying operating system. Ah well.

On the upside, you’ll be able to get this thing for (relatively) cheap. One of our sources just sent over a shot of an LG Fathom shelf tag freshly printed from Best Buy’s inventory system, price and all.

As long as things don’t change before the launch (which another source indicates is tentatively set for May 27th), you should be able to walk out with a Fathom for $99.99 on a 2-year contract. If you opt to buy it out right, that’ll set you back a cent shy of 500 smackers.

  • Weekly Rundown: Jeff Francis is hiking up the comeback trail

Known as the Sacagawea of fantasy primers, the Weekly Rundown guides
head-to-head owners through a forest of obscure stats and exploitable
matchups in an attempt to help solve lineup conundrums. While reading,
keep in mind matchups are subject to change due to managerial moves,
unforeseen injuries and Mother Nature’s influence.

    When Colorado’s
Jeff Francis(notes) entered the league in 2004 he was ranked ahead of contemporary fantasy superstars Josh Johnson(notes), Adam Wainwright(notes) and teammate
    Ubaldo Jimenez(notes). Named Baseball America’s
Minor League Player of the Year that season, the southpaw was destined to
develop into a franchise cornerstone. Equipped with a devastating change,
filthy slider and deceptive high-80s fastball, the hyped prospect certainly had
the stuff to live up to mammoth expectation.

As with any elite pitching prospect not named Strasburg (We
can only assume success will come easily for Washington’s alien life-form), Francis’
transition to the big league grind was arduous. Though he won 14 games in his
first full season in ’05, his 5.68 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 1.83 K/BB left a lot to
    be desired.

After a positive step forward in ’06, the Canadian import
finally took a major developmental leap during the Rockies’
World Series season. During that memorable campaign hitters transformed into flashing
dots and the youngster Pac-Man. He won 17 games, notched his best K/9 to date
(6.90), sliced down the free passes (2.63 BB/9) and devoured innings (215). His
growing command combined with an excellent groundball rate pointed to future vibrant campaigns.

Then the injury imp sharpened its teeth.

Francis, who underachieved throughout the ’08 season,
succumbed to the sinister creature’s bite in September suffering a significant
shoulder setback. After a brief non-surgical rehab attempt, he
eventually opted to go under the knife the following February, ending his ’09
    season before it even started.

Historically the chances of pitchers returning to a
formidable level after shoulder reconstruction are minimal. Erik Bedard(notes) is a
prime example. But, so far, the Noise’s hairier, slightly wealthier twin (see right) has defied the
    odds.

    Saturday afternoon in Kansas
City, the veteran painted his second straight
    masterpiece
. Over 6.1 innings, he held the Royals scoreless, surrendering five
hits, two walks with three strikeouts, netting his first win since August 25, 2008.

Yes, he’s faced meek competition (Washington
    and Kansas City),
but the former first-round pick appears to have regained his dependable form.
Abandoning his slider and cutter, he’s relied solely on three pitches — 86-89
mph fastball, curve and change — to generate weak contact. The scaled back
repertoire has worked flawlessly. In 13.1 innings, he’s allowed zero homers and
    compiled a 1.75 GB/FB ratio.

    There are numerous under-owned
commodities more viable than Francis (13-percent owned) wading in free agent
pools in several leagues – Derek Holland(notes) (17-percent) immediately comes to mind. But for
challenged owners looking for a backend difference-maker, the once highly
touted lefty is demanding your attention. Keep in mind he does have plenty of run support and plays in a favorable division.

Call Francis’ return to respectability just another Colorado comeback.

    Fearless Forecast
    (rest of season): 138 IP, 8 W, 4.07 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 104 K

    QUICK HITTERS
    (Tidbits from Saturday’s slate):
The Piano Man may soon sing a regretful
tune about Gordon Beckham(notes). After Saturday’s 1-for-2 (two runs, one SB) tally
against the Marlins, he’s hit safely in five of his last eight. Ozzie Guillen
will likely keep the sophomore infielder in the nine-hole until his bat
fully awakens. But once it does, he will almost certainly be reinserted into the two
spot. Pianow’s argument for severing the cord was justified, but Beckham’s
top-flight pedigree will soon resurface…It appears Adam Jones(notes) has finally
emerged from hibernation. Baltimore’s Teddy Ruxpin
smacked his fifth homer of the season, a two-run shot off Washington’s Craig Stammen(notes). He’s homered in
consecutive games and has recorded a hit in nine straight contests…In a
pitcher’s duel featuring Catfish Hunter and Gaylord Perry Gio Gonzalez(notes)
and Matt Cain(notes), the A’s starter bested his interleague archrival hurling eight
shutout innings (2 HA, 1 BB, 5 K). Neo Gio can be a bit erratic, but he’s
quietly undergoing a breakthrough season. Trim down the walks (4.44 BB/9
entering Saturday) and he could develop into a strong mixed league No. 2…

A bloop single by Juan Castro(notes) in the eighth robbed Daisuke Matsuzaka(notes) of baseball history. The Sox starter dominated powerhouse Philadelphia allowing just one hit with four walks and five Ks. The near milestone was his second quality start in five tries. Dice-K’s air-heavy GB/FB and high walks are a concern, but his unfortunate BABIP and strong K/9 gives him upside…The Mancrush Curse was squelched – at least for one outing. John Ely(notes) continued to save whales and fantasy rosters limiting the Tigers to two earned runs over six innings (8 H, 1 BB, 3 K, W). Do you believe yet?…Brennan Boesch(notes) cracked his fourth homer of the season. Including a run-scoring groundout, he elevated his RBI total to 22, the same number as Justin Upton(notes)…The Edwin Encarnacion(notes) slugfest continued as the third baseman won the heated battle of Edwins taking Jackson deep for a three-run shot. Travis Snider(notes) may lose PT if Easy E and Jose Bautista(notes) continue to touch ’em all…Drew Stubbs’(notes) epic whiffs and Mendoza-hugging BA are an eyesore but he continues to remain productive in other key categories. He became the 13th player this season to eclipse double-digits in steals swiping bags Nos. 10 and 11 against Cleveland. The outfielder is currently on a 15-40 pace.

    PULLS, STRAINS AND REHAB
    GAINS (Injury news and notes)
    : Brad Penny’s(notes) "grade 1" lat strain,
likely suffered during his grand salami off Joel Pineiro Friday, has forced the
valuable hurler to the 15-day DL. Rookie P.J. Walters(notes), who’s been untouchable
    at Triple-A Memphis
(18.2 IP, 0.48 ERA, 0.66 WHIP, 23K), earns the promotion and should see action
as a starter. On Saturday versus the Angels, he allowed two earned over four
innings with two walks and two Ks. Based on the 25-year-old’s career 1.43 GB/FB
    and 8.40 K/9 on the farm, he’s worth a look in NL-only formats…Aramis Ramirez(notes),
who’s seemingly been frozen in carbonite all year, is have difficulty swinging
bat due to a thumb injury. Blame his inglorious Golden Sombrero effort in Texas on the setback…J.A. Happ(notes) threw an encouraging bullpen
session on Friday and could begin a rehab assignment late this week. Charlie
Manuel hopes to have the second-year start back sometime in early June…Miguel
    Montero
    (notes)
is approximately two weeks away from activation. The backstop, currently
44-percent owned, is worth snatching up if Mike Napoli’s(notes) BA is crushing your
soul…Jimmy Rollins(notes) should avoid busy streets, raucous clubs and Pet a Lion Day
at the Philly zoo over the next couple weeks. The unlucky shortstop was placed
back on the 15-day DL with a calf strain. The former NL MVP hopes to return
when eligible in two weeks…The world is officially right once again! Eric
    Chavez
    (notes)
has fulfilled his yearly destiny. Mr. Glass was placed on the 15-day DL
    with girl neck spasms. Rejoice!

    DOUBLE DIPPERS

    For stream conscious owners
who want to push the innings-pitched envelope this is the list for you.
Run support, ballpark factors, historical and recent trends, opposing
offenses, opposing SPs, managerial tendencies and meteorological
influences are painstakingly taken into account to give you the top
    double dippers of each week.

    Other AL Double Dippers: None

Other NL Double Dippers: Ramon Ortiz(notes), LAD (at ChC, at Col), Kenshin Kawakami(notes), Atl (at Fla, Pit), Brian Burres(notes), Pit (at Cin, at Atl), R.A. Dickey(notes), NYM (Phi, at Mil)

    FEAST OR FAMINE?

  • Blackpool Football Club Claim £95m Prize: Biggest Prize in Global Sport!

Blackpool Football Club’s victory guarantees them the biggest windfall in global sport from the outcome of a single event: £95m, and possibly more. A prize that exceeded any previous prizes on offer to a team or individual from a football match, including the Champions League final or World Cup final, any boxing match, horse race, golf tournament or tennis event, or any single event in the major sports in America, home to four of the world’s richest sports leagues.

The £95m-plus is new, extra income that Blackpool Football Club will generate in the coming seasons as a result of winning at Wembley. Had they lost, nothing will be guaranteed on them: that is now Cardiff’s fate, although the finalists seconded that the losers would receive 100% of the gate receipts.

Blackpool Football Club will generate at least £40m from central Premier League funds next season, even if they finish bottom and are demoted. The bottom club this season, Portsmouth, had revenue of £31.8m in 2009-10, but new TV deals covering 2010-13 kick in this summer. Premier League sources expect the bottom club’s central funds income to be £40m-plus in the followingseason.

If Blackpool Football Club are demoted right away, they will earn another £48m in parachute payments over the next four seasons, broken down into £16m in years one and two after relegation, and £8m in years three and four. So that’s £88m guaranteed from Premier League central funds, in the worse-case scenario.

  • Geoegineering Ethics – Getting Serious & Humble About Climate Intervention [Video]

Earlier this Spring, 200 climate science experts and policy makers gathered in Pacific Grove, California, for ‘Asilomar 2′ (named after the first conference on bio-engineering held there in 1975), a pivotal conference for the emerging science of geoegineering. It  was a meeting that many attendees regretted was even necessary.

2009 was a big year for news on geoengineering, where the word suddenly started appearing, or being heard,  everywhere it seemed. This publicity for a  new science that seeks to intervene on a globe-impacting scale to counteract human induced climate change has also been propelling a greater concern on the part of scientists and policy experts: that of public participation in the policy forming process, and the need for ethical guidelines for future geoengineering decisions, should they be necessary.

  • One Month With My HD2

    101_2135 by WMPerson.

Having the HTC HD2 has finally made me happy. The first month of having my HTC HD2 was the worst, the device froze, and crashed a lot. I was shocked because the 1 GHz is supposed to help, but it was like the Touch Pro2. Well I stuck with it (I almost sold it and staid with my Droid Incredible, but now I love it) and its finally paying off.

I have my phone in perfect homeostasis. It does not freeze (much, unless it’s coming from a lock to a video), it does not restart by itself, it does not die fast, it is the perfect device now. This device (if the software is just perfect) can be a great joy to use, and due to a slight effort by T-mobile to push it to the buyers, the device has some brand name in America.

I took out Touch Flow AKA Sense UI from the device, and am running with SPB Mobile Shell Build 3.5.4(released last week). I have a different theme for it that looks just as flashy as Sense, but does not suck power, and energy like a Hummer H1. I also have a new ROM that has everything I need, and so I do not have anything else installed other than what the cook includes. As usual I do not have a case, because for me if I do not like how the device looks, I do not want to own it, and now the HTC HD2 looks like a model.

I will be doing the Droid Incredible VS HTC HD2 tomorrow, and Kin Two Vs HD2 and others next week. We should also be back with our Podcast soon, maybe just Surur and I, also the occasional special quest, when we get some. If you like my awesome image above, and want to see what device I have at the moment, check out and bookmark my Flickr page:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/46647490@N04/ and even follow me on twitter @WMPerson for my latest.

  • Gemma Arterton Says That Her Costumes Worth More than Her House

The English actress, Gemma Arterton, says she is no Disney princess material. During her interview at Cover Fashion, she stated that she could not believe how expensive her costumes are in the movie, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. She even said that these costumes were more expensive than her house because they were hand-embroidered with gold thread.

Princess Tamina is played by Arterton in the movie together with Jake Gyllenhaal who plays Dastin. Princess Tamina in the move is graceful, soulful and spiritual, and this would be a challenge for Arterton. Why? Because she is a Tomboy! She likes joking around with men as much as discussing the latest beauty regimes with women. But she still has the feminine side of her. She loves clothes and she even likes to spend a lot over them and she always likes to look nice. “I muck about and I’m not very girlie and precious,” she told Look magazine. “But I like clothes and I’m a girl’s girl. I’m feisty and like to speak my mind.”

Arterton appeared as Rosaline in Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost at the Globe Theatre in July 2007. She also appeared in the James Bond movie, “Quantum of Solace” whereby, she was chosen among 1500 candidates to be Strawberry Fields. Arterton is the face of Avon Bonds’ Girl 007 fragrance which was launched in October 2008. She even appeared in many advertisements that made her a star. She appeared in the latest film Clash of the Titans where she played Io, a mythological character.

Do you know that Gemma Arterton has a tattoo? Yes, she has an angel wing tattoo behind her left ear.

  • More than 160,000 homeowners skip Daley’s property tax relief

    From Sunday’s print edition:

    160,000 homeowners forgo small rebates

Property-tax refunds, linked to parking meter sale, drew only
    36,600 applications

More than 160,000 Chicago homeowners left money on the table — in
some cases, as much as $200 — by failing to apply for a property-tax
relief program that Mayor Richard Daley pushed to be included in this
    year’s budget.

City Hall said about 200,000 homeowners could apply
for the money, but records show only 36,621 applications were filed by
    the March 31 deadline.

That means the city stands to pay out less
than $4.5 million of the $35 million set aside for the payments, which
start at $25. There also will be promotional and administrative costs.
So far, less than $900,000 has been paid out to 6,991 homeowners,
    officials said.

The money is coming from Daley’s much-criticized
$1.15 billion lease of the city parking meter system. When Daley
promoted the property-tax relief idea last fall, some aldermen
questioned the value of spending millions on a program they said would
do little, if anything, to help cash-strapped homeowners.

    "It was a
political gimmick, and the voters saw it for what it was," said Ald.
Joe Moore, 49th. "Most people didn’t even see any value in taking the
    time to apply for it."

Daley has been criticized by some aldermen
and budget watchdogs for relying too heavily on the parking meter
proceeds to balance recent budgets. Much of the one-time windfall was
supposed to be set aside. So, some aldermen aren’t lamenting the small
    number of property-tax rebate applications.

    "I guess the good news
is that we didn’t spend as much of our reserves on this gimmick," Moore
said. "The bad news is the mayor probably has more to raid for next
    year."

The administration, however, is satisfied with the number
of applicants to the heavily promoted program, said a spokesman for the
    Office of Budget and Management.

"You can’t expect everyone who is
potentially eligible to make an application, and we’re satisfied with
the results," spokesman Pete Scales said. "Thousands of people got
    property-tax relief."

Aldermen initially balked at approving the
program, but the opposition withered after Daley suggested homeowners
could politically punish aldermen who voted against it.

    Daley said
it is designed to blunt the impact of the phasing out of a state law
that limited property-tax increases caused, in part, by rising home
    values.

That break, which ended this year in Chicago, was recently
reauthorized by the General Assembly, in an effort fraught with
political implications as November elections approach. It awaits the
    signature of Gov. Pat Quinn.

  • Inside Republican governor candidate Bill Brady’s business deals

    From the Sunday print edition:

    Inside Brady’s business deals

Governor hopeful has been through economic ups and downs

By David Heinzmann and Rick Pearson, Tribune reporters

On the southwest fringe of Champaign along Interstate Highway 57 stands
the Curtis Road interchange, its ornate limestone overpass and
decorative red-brick towers surrounded by acres of open farmland.

It was envisioned as the catalyst for a massive residential and retail
development that would start with new homes built by Bill Brady, the
state senator and Republican candidate for governor. Instead, it’s an
    overpass to nowhere.

Brady, a developer for 25 years, underestimated the cost of his leading
role and then backed away when city officials refused to provide more
taxpayer money. The deal fell apart in 2007, stalling other development,
    and the land remains vacant.

The interchange represents the crossroads of Brady’s political and
business careers. As the first part-time politician running for
governor in nearly 30 years, Brady contends that his experience running a
successful business will help him solve the state’s financial problems.

"I think people are looking for someone who understands the intricacies
of business, how you manage people, how you perform services," Brady
    said.

But his family firm’s recent struggles and the failed Champaign
development offer voters a more complicated picture.

Public records and interviews with city officials show that Brady
mishandled the sewer project he promised to build, improvements that
other developers were counting on. In November, Brady sued the
engineering firm he hired. But last week he quietly dropped the lawsuit
and placed the blame on the city.

The Curtis Road mess added to the hard times for a company that had made
Brady and his two brothers wealthy as they capitalized on a population
    boom in Bloomington-Normal.

The Brady family has been well-known in Bloomington’s business community
for nearly a half century. Bill Brady Sr., the candidate’s father,
started building homes in the mid-1960s.

The company grew into a multimillion-dollar enterprise, but Brady’s
father overextended himself in the early 1980s. Years of losses and
sky-high interest rates pushed the company into bankruptcy in 1984 when
the elder Brady couldn’t keep up payments on about $2 million in debts
to banks and contractors, according to court records.

At the time, Bill Jr. was just out of college, married and working at
the family lumberyard. When the company emerged from bankruptcy in 1987,
young Bill was running the development side of the business, while his
father took a back seat running the lumberyard.

As Bloomington flourished in the late 1980s and 1990s, the family built
subdivisions with names like Waterford Estates and Fox Hollow. They
expanded their real estate sales business, developed a shopping center
to feed the new neighborhoods and created a bustling office park where
    their own businesses are based.

"That time frame was just booming years for Bloomington," said Jesse
Smart, who was mayor from 1985 to 1997 as the area’s population was
heading from 80,000 to more than 120,000 today. "It was just the hot
spot of the state. Those were the heydays for developers."

Public records and interviews with downstate development professionals
paint a picture of a businessman who prospered from his deep roots in
the city. Known even to low-level city workers as "Billy," Brady became
the very public face of his family business, a member of
Bloomington-Normal’s civic and business elite. That success translated
into political capital for Brady, who was elected to the Illinois House
    in 1992.

Ken Emmons, who retired as Bloomington’s city planner early last year,
said Brady was careful to maintain a solid public image.

"He doesn’t want to have a bad reputation, doesn’t want to alienate his
customers or the neighbors," Emmons said.

In fact, Brady has sometimes artfully avoided controversy.

When he bought a parcel zoned for industrial development near an area of
single-family homes, he planned to develop the land with apartments.
Instead of doing the work himself, he sold the land to an Indiana
developer who built subsidized housing in 2001. There was a rash of
opposition from nearby homeowners, but it was absorbed by the
    out-of-town firm, Emmons said.

At its peak in 2006, Brady Homes had 34 employees and built nearly 200
homes, according to Brady. But in the recession that started in 2007,
Brady Homes, Pinehurst Development and a handful of related firms the
    family operates have stumbled.

Brady’s personal tax returns, which he at first resisted disclosing,
showed that the company has lost enough money over the last two years
that he has not paid any income tax, even on his $78,000 salary from
    the General Assembly.

In an interview last week with the Tribune, Brady said he started
re-examining the company’s future during his failed 2006 campaign for
governor. He said he looked at the firm’s fundamentals and reorganized
the business, with his brothers and partners laying off all but nine
workers who last year built nearly 100 homes.

As demand for new housing waned in McLean County over the last decade,
Brady has looked harder for new business in other downstate markets. He
built in Peoria and suburban Springfield. On the western border of
Champaign, Brady Homes started with a subdivision of houses and
    townhomes called The Cove.

Brady’s next big project in town would be a more than 300-home
subdivision called Prairie Creek designed to capitalize on plans the
state announced in 2002 to build a new I-57 interchange at Curtis Road.
Planners and developers saw the Curtis Road corridor as the next wave of
expansion in Champaign. Brady saw the potential as well, and sought to
secure options on 120 acres of farmland adjacent to the interchange
    site.

The homes Brady planned would lead the way for additional development
that would include shopping centers, restaurants and office buildings
the city had earmarked for the four quadrants surrounding the highway
    intersection.

In 2003, the state legislature gave the local government authority to
take land for sewers along Curtis Road east of Brady’s property. A final
vote to enact the law occurred Nov. 4, as Brady was securing options on
the land he planned to develop. He voted for it.

Three years later, when the legislature re-authorized the sewer plans,
well after Brady began acquiring the land, he again voted in favor of
the measure. In 2007, Brady also voted for similar legislation allowing
Champaign and other local governments to seize property to build their
    share of the interchange.

Although the actions would help move the interchange project along, and
affect the value of his land, Brady did not recuse himself.

"If I felt I had a conflict, I wouldn’t have done that," Brady said.
Later, in an e-mail, Brady said he believed the legislation had no
direct effect on his Champaign property.

Champaign officials were originally hesitant to allow developers into
the area because there was no sewer service. But when Brady offered to
build the pumping station and sewer connection to jump-start his
development, the city cut a deal with him with provisions to pay Brady
back a portion of the costs down the road.

But problems started early because Brady moved forward without an
accurate understanding of what the work would cost, said Bruce Knight,
Champaign’s planning director. Brady’s original $1.27 million cost
estimate was based on faulty assumptions, Knight said.

When proper bids were finally done, Brady’s share of the cost grew by
more than $1 million, and he balked at doing the work without getting
more money from taxpayers, public records show.

"We made a deal with Brady, in which clearly we were capping our
investment at (a certain) level," Knight said. More money from taxpayers
    was not "justifiable," Knight said.

Brady contended Champaign officials were supposed to cover the higher
    costs.

"Our attorney said the city had the right to nix the deal if they didn’t
like how the bids came in. The city nixed the deal," Brady said. "They
told us they didn’t have the money to pay it at the cost it came in. We
said, ‘That wasn’t our agreement. You agreed to reimburse us,’ and they
    said ‘No.’"

Knight said Brady’s assertion is incorrect.

As Brady backed away from the plans, Champaign officials met with two
other developers who had planned to piggyback off the sewer system for
    their own residential projects.

Soon, one of the other developers, Darren Rogers, was taking the lead in
trying to get the development back on track. In an e-mail to a city
engineer, he blamed Brady for the mess over pumping station costs.

"Engineering costs are too high primarily due to Brady changing the
design so many times. He needs to pay for a significant portion of those
costs," Rogers said to Roland White, Champaign city engineer.

In the end, no one could put a deal together to build the pumping
station, and as the bottom dropped out of the economy in 2008, the whole
project was put on a back burner.

Throughout the process, city officials said they had difficulty getting
    Brady’s attention at critical times.

"He was often hard to reach because he was busy with other things,"
    Knight said.

  • Google TV: The Smart TV could change the concept of television advertising

Google TV: The Smart TV could change the concept of television advertising The recent announcement and presentation of ‘Google TV‘ may pose a significant turn for the TV industry. And no wonder considering that this new initiative of “Smart TV” could seriously threaten the traditional concept of television today.

Certainly, Google’s strategic moves always maintain a common goal. In addition to innovate and bring new services exploiting the available technological resources, is no doubt that with this new “evolutionary step,” Google aims to further strengthen its dominant position in the advertising market, plunged into the conquest of television advertising. A sector which currently maintains an investment of 70,000 million dollars.

During his presentation at a conference in San Francisco, made it clear the impact of this new television, referring to it as “new platform that will change the future of television.”

Recently we addressed this issue, stating that Internet advertising and absorb the future of television and so we came to the conclusion that “the Internet will be the means” and not the television will become an element of a digital media multi ”audiovisual” which also will join the rest of traditional media.

With Google TV, the concept of “television” will acquire a new dimension with the multiple applications and new capabilities that will have through this new platform built on the Android OS to “combine the best of television and the Internet” and from the which would be born “true video on demand.”

The success or failure of this new initiative could condition and determine the future market of traditional television advertising. And this new TV concept opens up new possibilities for brands and advertisers to reach audiences with new formats and viewers and advertising strategies and new business models related to the contents of payment. A new opportunity for the film industry and the producers that could offer viewers the opportunity to access all types of videos or on-demand content.

In this sense, television advertising through this new platform would combine the traditional elements with the multimedia features of the medium internet. Imagine for example a cut advertising where ads require or suggest to our interaction and participation, or the opportunity to decide what kind of ads we want to see during commercial breaks.

So far we have to wait to see the evolution and developments but it is certain that the “intelligent television” could change the concept of traditional television advertising.
