Pontiac’s throwback appeal to its workers – Click above to watch videos after the jump

“What Americans want to know is you are doing your job.” That’s what Pontiac had to say to its plant workers with two videos made in the Seventies, when the brand that once built excitement was building up concern over foreign car sales. The message is a simple pep talk at the highest level, but with a riptide of martial tones: if Americans know “you’re fussy about installing wiring,” then they’ll keep buying Pontiacs and we can, essentially, repel the menace.

Obviously, it didn’t work. You can have a look at the failed (and at times, somewhat xenophobic) calls-to-action in the videos after the jump.

  • What is Google TV? Straight from Google

Earlier this morning at the Google I/O event, a major portion was dedicated to the announcement of Google TV. Google TV is basically a software layer that lets you find content to watch on your television. It’s build on , Chrome, and Flash, and lets you control things like live TV, as well as giving you the full power of the Internet. You can throw TV into a picture-in-picture box to fire up a web browser, search YouTube, pull up Hulu, or really just about anything else that you can do in a browser. Google Search sits on top of everything, and can be pulled up at any time. When you do a search, it will pull results from the web, as well as from TV listings, giving you the ability to find whatever you want to watch. If you like a show, channel, or search, you can save that as a bookmark for easy access later.

The interesting thing here is the integration with Android. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are mandatory in the Google TV hardware, which will be built by partners. That means that you can use an Android handheld device, pull up a website, and just beam it right over to Google TV. You can also perform a voice search on the device, and have that search carried out on the TV. Eliminating the frustrating tap-typing that we are all so tired of when it comes to searching on a big screen like a television? That is fairly awesome. Oh, and since Google TV runs Android, that also means that it runs apps as well. You get complete access to the Android market.

Take a look at the video above for a simple explanation of what Google TV is all about. You can expect to see devices shipping, like a Logitech set-top box, that will give you Google TV capabilities, later this year in the fall.

  • Adoption records to be opened up under new Illinois law

Posted by Monique Garcia at 7:31 p.m.

Gov. Pat Quinn on Friday plans to sign into law a measure allowing people who were adopted as children to access their birth records to find out more about their past.

The proposal is sponsored by Rep. Sara Feigenholtz, D-Chicago, who was adopted and has pushed to open adoption records for years.

The legislation allows anyone adopted before 1946 to get their full birth certificate information by filing a written request with the state adoption registry. Those born after Jan. 1, 1946, could learn the same information if they are over 21 and at least one birth parent has not requested anonymity.

Currently, birth records in adoption cases are closed unless a parent specifically requests they be open. Under the new law, birth parents would have until Jan. 1, 2011 to request that their identifying information not be shared.

That provision sparked opposition among some lawmakers who said some mothers assumed their identities would never be known. The measure passed the House 74-39 and the Senate 36-16. You can read the legislation by clicking here.

Feigenholtz argues that it’s a basic human right to be able to access one’s birth records.

Also scheduled to attend the bill signing are Sen. AJ Wilhelmi, D-Joliet, and Howard Griffith, a former fullback for the Denver Broncos who played at the University of Illinois. Griffith was adopted.

Feigenholtz had tried to pass the legislation since at least 2008.

Here’s a Tribune story from March 2008 on the topic:

Former Denver Broncos fullback and adoptee Howard Griffith  has spent many holidays surrounded by his wife, children, parents and other family. But he’s never been able to shake the feeling that something was missing.

"There’s always still a sense of loneliness because you truly don’t know who you are, even though you have this support system," Griffith said.On Monday morning, he stood in support of Democratic state Rep. Sara Feigenholtz of Chicago, who is sponsoring a bill that would give many adoptees at least 21 years old access to their original birth certificates for the first time since Illinois sealed the records in the 1940s.

The bill, which has been assigned to the House Adoption Reform Committee, will be voted on Thursday, said Feigenholtz, herself an adoptee.

"We’ve been deprived of our history and our identity," she said. "Chapter 1 of everyone else’s lives begins with a birth certificate, a document I and everyone behind me are prohibited from having."

The law would allow adoptees born before Jan. 1, 1946, to immediately get copies of their birth certificates. Those adoptees had access to their records until the state sealed them retroactively.

Anyone born after Jan. 1, 1946, will have to wait to retrieve the document until April 1, 2009, giving birth parents the opportunity to request anonymity through the state registry, Feigenholtz said. To have their names removed from the certificate, parents have to pay a $40 fee or fill out a medical questionnaire, said Melisha Mitchell, executive director of an organization called White Oak Foundation that provides post-adoption services.

Advocates of the bill are hoping the birth parents will opt to fill out their medical history, so their children can receive vital information, Mitchell said. If the parents do ask for anonymity, the adoptee can go to the courts five years from that date and initiate a search for updated medical information free of charge.

Of the about 2,000 birth parents registered in the state, only 17 have asked to remain confidential, Feigenholtz said.

Mitchell, a birth mother who chose adoption for her child, said many parents long to know that their child turned out all right.

"By the time our surrendered son and daughter reached adulthood, we just wanted peace of mind," she said.

Feigenholtz has spent a decade championing bills aimed at making it easier for birth parents to reconnect with the adult children for whom they chose adoption. In 1997, she proposed legislation that would have opened all Illinois adoption records if it had passed.

In 1999, she got a bill passed that expanded the state’s adoption registry, which allows adoptees and birth parents to document their desire to reunite and helps them find one another.

More recently, Feigenholtz succeeded in revising a law that used to require adoptees have a medical reason to petition courts for information about their parents. Now they can seek the help of a confidential intermediary for any reason.

WGN Radio personality Steve Cochran said supplying birth certificates for adoptees like himself is an issue of fairness.

"It’s something you ought to have because everyone else gets it," he said.

Mercedes-Benz Hexawheel concept by Siyamak Rouhi Dehkordi – Click above for high-res image gallery

Looking at luxury sedans like the S-Class and drop-tops like SLK, it’d be all to easy to forget that Mercedes-Benz has a rich background in off-roaders. But the Three-Pointed Star is also the maker of such rockcrawlers as the legendary Geländewagen and the Unimog. And that’s the expertise that Iranian designer Siyamak Rouhi Dehkordi has tapped into with his Hexawheel concept.

Drawing inspiration from the articulated frames of insects, the Hexawheel employs six driven wheels on an articulated chassis with a flexible drivetrain. Measuring nearly 16 feet long with a foot and a half of ground clearance, the go-anywhere Hexawheel is designed to climb over tall vertical surfaces. The Persian mechanical engineer was also responsible for the F1-inspired Ferrari Zobin concept we featured earlier, and you can check out his latest vision in the high-resolution image gallery below.

  • Dennis Blair resigns as director of U.S. National Intelligence

Dennis Blair resigns as director of U.S. National Intelligence

The Director of U.S. National Intelligence, Dennis Blair, announced his resignation at a time when its work has been put into question after the failed attacks of Detroit and New York. President Barack Obama has accepted the resignation of Dennis Blair.

“During his time as DNI, our intelligence community has performed admirably and effectively at a time of great challenges to our security, and I have valued his sense of purpose and patriotism,” Obama said in a statement.

“I have had no greater honor or pleasure than to lead the remarkably talented and patriotic men and women of the Intelligence Community,” Blair said in the statement.

As Director of Intelligence, Blair was responsible for the coordination of 16 government agencies involved in gathering intelligence and fighting terrorism.

His resignation comes after a highly critical Senate report  which says that he attributed largely to failures in the Counterterrorism Center’s Directorate of Intelligence the responsibility to avoid the failed attack on Christmas Day last year against an airplane that covered the route between Amsterdam and Detroit.

Then, the Nigerian student tried to blow Faruk Abdulmutallab explosive hidden in his underwear. Abdulmutallab retained his visa to travel to U.S. even after his father, a prominent banker in Nigeria, had informed U.S. diplomats and agents of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in Abuja concerned about the extremist ideas of the young. Abdulmutallab name joined a list of about 560,000 people suspected of terrorist activities, but information on the young did not reach the level to which the U.S. State Department cancel his visa.

Following publication of the report of the Senate, Blair issued a statement acknowledging that “institutional and technological barriers remain that prevent the smooth exchange of information” between the various agencies.

But there are some signs of modest stabilization out there.

S&P futures which dove after the close are back up a bit.

The aussie dollar — the worst currency in the month of May — is higher, as is the euro. Gold is up a little.

The US dollar and the yen are off a bit.
