Elevation injected over $460 million since the big recapitalization deal in 2007.

  • Chelsea Handler Sex Tape

E!’s First Lady of Late-Nite has found herself in the middle of a real-life sex scandal.

Chelsea Lately host Chelsea Handler is firing back at reports that she is featured in X-rated footage recently obtained by RadarOnline.com.

On Wednesday, Radar snoops reported that the no-holds-barred comedienne was caught on tape “nearly a decade” ago getting saucy and uncut with a sexy Brit. According to tipsters, the footage was shot shortly after a then 25-year-old Chelsea moved to Los Angeles and features Handler in the throws of passion as she tries out a mirage of blushworthy positions with an unidentified partner.

Chelsea — whose signature sass landed her a Playboy centerfold last winter — asserts that the tape in question was purely comedic and part of a long forgotten “comedy bit.”

    Well, that’s a new one!

“Watch the show. It’s not a sex tape – it was done for a comedy bit years ago,” a ticked-off rep for the star fumed when flooded with questions about the suspicious tape.

Radar, on the other hand, insists the skin flick is no laughing matter, writing: “During the first part of the tape Chelsea is fully clothed in her work uniform. She begins by introducing herself by name before going into a stand-up routine before suddenly cutting to Chelsea and her male partner engaging in an explicit sex act. Chelsea, who is on all fours on a bed is naked and at several times during the filming she looks directly at the camera. Her breasts are bare and swinging during the sex act. At the end of the “performance” Chelsea’s partner speaks in a clear British accent, asking, “Did we get the (bleep) shot?” Chelsea looks into the camera and smiles at this point. Then the tape immediately cuts back into Chelsea continuing her stand-up routine in her apartment….”

  • Volkswagen’s first-quarter earnings were weighed down by Porsche stake

2010 Porsche 911 Turbo FaceliftThe performance of Volkswagen AG in the first quarter was stellar but its stake in Porsche AG weighed down its earnings, according to VW’s finance chief. VW accounts for a 49.9% stake in Porsche at equity.

This means that it books the share of profits or losses at Porsche proportional to the size of its stakeholding. Under IFRS regulations on the allocation of the purchase price (PPA effects), the 3.9 billion euro ($5.2 billion) acquisition cost from December 2009 for the Porsche stake is subject to continual non-cash writedowns. In a conference call, CFO Hans Dieter Poetsch said that these accounting charges more than offset VW’s share of profit from Porsche. Within the next year, Volkswagen will seek to subsume Porsche AG’s majority parent, Porsche Automobil Holding SE, giving it full control over the brand as well. When it comes to the group level, it’s notable that all of VW’s core brands posted improvements, driving up by nearly three times the first-quarter operating profit. In particular, this report reveals how quickly the turnaround had been for the flagship VW brand.

  • Under-the-Radar in New England: 16 Startup Financings Under $1 Million

    Erin Kutz wrote:

March was a big month for little deals—at least when it comes to investing in New England’s startups.

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about the venture investing deals worth $1 million and up for March, which totaled to $194.5 million across 17 deals, according to data provided to us by private company intelligence platform CB Insights. That made March the slowest month this year for $1 million-plus deals, but at the other end of the spectrum New England companies inked 16 deals under $1 million, by far the biggest list this year. (There were 10 such “under-the-radar” deals on the January list, and nine on February’s.)

Not only did the number of under-the-radar transactions increase in March, so did the proportion of them that were based in equity. March’s list had a dozen equity-based transactions, and four debt-related financings. As far as February under-the-radar deals go, there were five equity-based transactions, three debt-based fundings, and one sale of securities to be acquired through the exercise of options and warrants.

We like to look at our under-the-radar list as helping to paint a richer, more complete picture of startup investing in the region, and I think March’s list revealed that the startup investing for the month was much more diverse than one would conclude from the $1 million-plus deals. The healthcare industry accounted for more than half of the big-dollar deals, and nearly 75 percent of the total money invested, but the under-the-radar list includes companies working in a vast array of sectors. In addition to the few medical device and health IT companies, March’s under-the-radar list included companies in online learning, marketing automation and customization, solar energy, energy auditing, water treatment, and mobile travel guides.

Also, for the first time this year, Massachusetts companies didn’t take the majority of New England’s smaller transactions. Connecticut took the top spot with seven deals, and Massachusetts followed with six. (My allegiances are conflicted here; I’m a Connecticut native but have been in the Bay State for about five years.) Two startups grabbed under-the-radar funding in New Hampshire, and Vermont inked …Next Page »

  • SugarSync Revew

screenshot 17 300x205 SugarSync RevewHow many computers do you use in a single day? How about in a work week? In today’s digital world, we are rarely in the same place for very long. The large majority of people are regularly on two, three, and even more digital devices every single day. These devices may include PCs, Macs, smart phones, and even the iPad. With your data spread out across all of these machines, keeping everything synchronized and up to date can be a real challenge.

Enter SugarSync– utilizing the power of the cloud to make sure that you are never without your essential data, anywhere, anytime. The SugarSync program will keep your life in sync across Macs, PCs, smart phones, and even the Apple iPad automatically. Imagine taking a picture on your smart phone which is then instantly and automatically uploaded to your SugarSync account and downloaded onto all your other computers. It’s as simple as installing the software on the computers you want to keep in sync, identifying which files and folders you want to be synchronized, and then forgetting the program even exists. Everything is automatic and updated within seconds. As you edit and change your files, they get uploaded to the SugarSync servers and downloaded onto any other computer you want.

Not only will your files stay in sync, they are also mobilized and accessible anywhere. You can share specified files, folders, and documents with friends and family very easily. They can even make changes to the files if you want and then they are automatically updated on your computer. Don’t worry about loosing data either, SugarSync features integrated file versioning, saving up to five previous versions automatically of any file, so it’s very simple to revert to previous copies. Previous saved versions don’t count towards your storage allotment either.

Business collaboration just got a whole lot easier as well. I know personally from running a business with 10 other members spread across the globe, that SugarSync’s features can and will make our collaborations much easier. GoogleDocs, various Wiki’s, a file storage service, all of these things are made obsolete with SugarSync.

Your data is safe and secure as well on SugarSyncs servers. All connections are protected behind SSL encryption, and 128-bit AES encrypted secure servers that are redundantly backed up on multiple data centers. Everything is password protected, and you can even hand out security codes to friends and family for special access to certain files.

Full installation and setup takes 5 minutes max. There are two different options offered to you for syncing your files- Full Sync and Lite Sync. Full sync will store a backup of the file as you edit it on the SugarSync servers and download it automatically onto any machine you specify. Lite sync will store the file online, and allow it to be viewed and edited online, however it will not automatically saved onto your other machines and smart phones (which may not be able to use the file anyway).

This service is still relatively new, and the developers are constantly refining and adding more and more features. For example- soon you will be able to keep your Outlook contacts and Mac address book synced across your network. Also automatic Flickr and Facebook update capabilities are going to be rolled out shortly for photos which is great news for digital photographers and smart phone photographers.

screenshot 18 SugarSync RevewThere is even an iPad app for SugarSync which has recently been updated with document editing capabilities to make it even more versatile and capable. You can open and edit documents and spreadsheets in other iPad apps like Numbers and Pages. One drawback however with the SugarSync iPad app is that files are not automatically synced back to your account on the server as you edit them. To update your files across your network with your iPad, you need to make use of the update by email feature. SugarSync is currently working with Apple though to make the experience truly seamless on the iPad.

Pricing is very reasonable and starts at $4.99 a month for 10 GB of space and goes as high as $39.99 a month for 500 GB of storage space.

There is another company that offers similar service called DropBox. It too is cross-platform compatible and has similar pricing. They do offer a full free service of up to 2 GB of online storage, and the Mac client is more robust and stable since SugarSync’s Mac client is still in beta. DropBox also supports Linux where SugarSync does not yet, but it does not support mobile devices which is a big gap in their compatibility. Debates have raged over which company is better, and in the end it comes down to personal preference. Overall, SugarSync is the winner in our books because of it’s ease of use and mobile device/iPad compatibility. They are an exciting company with a team that seems very interested in making it the best file syncing system on the internet. You can check them out for yourself with their free 45 day trial.

    Quote of the Week

&quot Will an undocumented immigrant from Ireland be accosted? Probably not. Will Latino fathers bringing their sons to Little League baseball camp be targeted? Perhaps. Will the thousands of farm workers who harvest our food be automatic suspects? Certainly.&quot

-Statement from United Farm Workers President Arturo S. Rodriguez regarding Arizona Governor Jan Brewer’s decision to sign Senate Bill 1070 targeting immigrants in Arizona, 4/22/10

Mad Science: Climate Chaos and Geoengineering

Monsanto, Cargill, Archer Daniels Midland, Bill Gates and a swarm of get-rich-quick corporations are telling anxious world politicians and the Obama Administration not to worry about impending climate catastrophe. They’ll take care of the problem with genetically engineered crops, animals, and trees agrofuels derived from plantations of GMO corn and soybeans and monoculture plantations of sugar cane and palm oil and other hi-tech, potentially apocalyptic schemes such as blasting sulfate particles into the stratosphere to reflect the sun’s rays dumping iron particles in the oceans to nurture CO2-absorbing plankton and firing silver iodide into clouds to produce rain.

Supreme Court Sees No Problem with Genetic Pollution from Monsanto’s Genetically Engineered Alfalfa

In the first Supreme Court case dealing with the hazards of genetically engineered crops, a federal court injunction against Monsanto’s genetically engineered alfalfa, the justices showed little concern about the safety or inevitable genetic pollution of biotech crops. Justice Antonin Scalia suggested that the threat to conventional or organic growers was minor and manageable.

&quot It makes it more difficult for them (farmers not planting Monsanto’s GMO alfalfa) to have a field of 100 percent non-genetically engineered (alfalfa), but that’s not the end of the world,&quot Scalia said.

Alert of the Week: OCA Calls for Consumer and Tourist Boycott of Arizona

Stand up for human rights, boycott Arizona!

Arizona’s controversial Senate Bill 1070 is a law that legalizes and promotes racial profiling. Survey: Do You Support the Rights of Mother Earth?

During his presentation at the UN Climate Conference in Copenhagen in December 2009, President Evo Morales of Bolivia proposed a global referendum that would tackle the root causes of climate change. Below are the questions he proposed.

    • 1. Do you agree with re-establishing harmony with nature while recognizing the rights of Mother Earth? YES or NO
    • 2. Do you agree with changing this model of over-consumption and waste that the capitalist system represents? YES or NO
    • 3. Do you agree that developed countries reduce and re-absorb their domestic greenhouse gas emissions so that the temperature does not rise more than 1 degree Celsius? YES or NO
    • 4. Do you agree with transferring all that is spent in wars to protecting the planet and allocate a budget for climate change that is bigger than what is used for defense? YES or NO
    • 5. Do you agree with a Climate Justice Tribunal to judge those who destroy Mother Earth? YES or NO

If you agree with these propositions, please circulate widely and click here.

    Hello Viewers,

Every six months, 200,000 animals are subjected to pain and usually death by experimental drug tests in the United States. As an animal lover, I’m sure you are as appalled by this as I am.

But we can do something about this! Please, sign your name to PCRM’s petition to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) right now. We’re calling on the FDA to change their policies&mdash requiring companies testing new drugs to use nonanimal methods whenever possible!

The action you take today could save animals from cruelty tomorrow.

Thomas, this is one of PCRM’s longest running campaigns, and we need more caring supporters like you to stand behind us as we make our case to the FDA. Your signed petition will prove that all across the country there is a powerful grassroots movement opposed to animal testing.

PCRM is committed to seeing this campaign through until the policies change. The FDA has the power to save millions of animals each year&mdash by stopping cruel, immoral, and medically unsound animal tests! By using humane testing methods, we’d spare animal lives AND have safer drugs. It’s a win-win!

This is a fight I’m convinced we can win. And your signed petition today will help!

Ocean currents are one of the driving forces behind our planet’s climate, and according to Japanese and Australian scientists a new current has been discovered in the Indian Ocean sector of the Southern Ocean.

In a paper published in Nature Geoscience the researchers describe an ocean current, approximately 4,200 kilometres south-west of Perth, Australia, that is the equivalent of 40 Amazon Rivers and exists at more than three kilometres below the Ocean’s surface.
