  • I’d Live Here, But Alas, I’m Too Large [Art]

Natural wood tables, a comfy-looking lounger and a big screen iMac. What a great home office…if only it used less periwinkle and it were in any way real. That’s right, the whole thing is fake—miniature, in fact.

The room is from a dollhouse by designer Elaine Shaw. Her 3-foot, 3-story home model is called Clearview, and it serves as a reinterpretation of what we traditionally call a dollhouse—either wooden constructs of Victorian era abodes or now-canceled-but-4ever-awesome television shows on Fox.

With balconies, sliding glass doors, plenty of contemporary art and even digital accoutrements like Xboxes, I’m not sure I’m going to dust off my doll collection just yet, but I might use such facilities to give He-Man some R&R. [Metro via BornRich]

  • Senegal proposes African state for Haitians

Senegal proposes African state for Haitians

    Quote:

By Diadie Ba and Gabriela Matthews

DAKAR (Reuters) – Senegal’s leader proposed the creation of a new African state to resettle Haitians left homeless by an earthquake, comparing the idea to the 1948 birth of the state of Israel.

Seizing on an outpouring of African pity for the plight of tens of thousands of Haitians still awaiting aid, President Abdoulaye Wade said their history as the descendants of slaves gave them the right to a new life on the continent.

"All we are saying is that the Haitians didn’t take themselves over there. They are there because of slavery, five centuries of slavery," Wade told Reuters TV on Monday.

"We have to offer them the chance to come to Africa, that is my idea. They have as much right to Africa as I have," he said of his proposal, which became public over the weekend and is now due to be submitted to the 53-nation African Union.

Wade has long profiled himself as a defender of the poor on the world stage. Critics say he has a populist streak and his schemes do not always materialise, but the 83-year-old leader brushed off the doubters.

"Israel was created like that," he said of the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine following World War Two and the mass extermination of Europe’s Jews in Nazi death camps.

"You can’t tell me it’s not possible. It’s all possible if the Haitians seek it," said Wade, who was speaking on the margins of a conference in the Senegalese capital Dakar.

Senegal is due to submit a resolution to the African Union urging the creation for Haitians of "their own state on African territory, the land of their ancestors", according to the text of the resolution published in local newspapers.

Wade said Senegal and other African states should naturalise any Haitians who sought new nationality, and he urged a mass adoption programme across the continent for orphans of Tuesday’s quake, feared to have killed as many as 200,000.

The idea for a new state is reminiscent of the 19th century creation of Liberia by freed U.S. slaves. The West African country is currently recovering from a 1999 civil war and is hoping to benefit from recent oil discoveries off its coast.

Senegal has a 13 million population and straddles the arid Sahel area and the lusher region around its southern border.

While one of the more stable countries in West Africa, it suffers high unemployment and acute deficiencies in basic infrastructure including roads and electricity supply.

Yet television images of black, French-speaking Haitians in distress have touched a nerve across Francophone West and central Africa and Wade’s proposal created a stir.

"It’s a very crazy idea," said Saliou Laye Beye, a 45-year-old construction sector worker in the working class Dakar suburb of Yoff. "Our country is already going through enormous difficulties socially and economically."

But Serigne Abdou, a street seller of bread in the same district, welcomed the plan as feasible.

"We are all black people … I’m convinced they could get used to our way of life here," said Abdou.

Separately, Democratic Republic of Congo, which has just been told by the International Monetary Fund its debt levels are fiscally unsustainable, pledged $2.5 million aid at the weekend.

  • Susan Boyle Brit Awards Snub

Susan Boyle has been unceremoniously snubbed from nominations for the 2010 Brit Awards!

The Scottish spinster’s debut LP I Dreamed A Dream spent six weeks at the top of the Billboard charts in the US and was the biggest-selling album of 2009 over the pond, but somehow managed to not earn a single nod at Britain’s annual ceremony celebrating the year’s best in music.

“The problem for the Brits is they’re supposed to be a celebration of British music – and cool,” a source told The Daily Mail Monday. “And whatever anyone thinks of Susan Boyle, she certainly isn’t cool. She’s not even shortlisted for ‘Best Female’, even though that’s usually the weakest category,” the insider further gushed.

“And it’s not just an attack on Susan. It also shows how Simon Cowell is regarded by many in the record business.”

The 30th Brit Awards will be held in London on Feb. 16.

  • Google Investigating Employees in China

The Guardian is reporting that Google China is investigating its staff about The Incident. “”We’re not commenting on rumor and speculation. This is an ongoing investigation and we simply cannot comment on the details,” a Google spokeswoman said. Security analysts told Reuters the malicious software or malware used in the attack was a modification of a trojan called Hydraq. A trojan is a hidden program allowing unauthorized access to a computer. The analysts said the sophistication in the attack was in knowing whom to attack, not the malware itself.

  • The ITG xpPhone gets officially priced

    Screen shot 2010-01-18 at [ January 18 ] 11.16.25 AM

Its only been around 8 months since the xpPhone — a phone which, as the name implies, runs Windows XP — made its online debut, but its already caused quite the rift between the mega-geeks. One camp seems to think its the coolest thing since air-conditioned underpants; the other seems to think it’s a big pile of nonsense.

Throughout all of this dweeby disputing, one important item remained a mystery: the price. Consider that mystery solved.

Various elements of the phone (color, Windows XP/Windows 7, etc) are customizable, so the price varies a bit. But according to the manufacturer, the phone will always come in somewhere between 2999 and 4500 Chinese RMB; on this side of the pond, that works out to 400-650 bucks.

What say you, dear reader? Would you drop right around 500 bucks for a brick-sized handset that runs Windows XP?

  • Searching for gold: how to fund your indie video game

Creating a game on your own is no easy task. Aside from making sure you have all the artistic and programming skills necessary—or that you can assemble a team to handle those responsibilities—there’s the ever-constant need for funding to make such a project a reality.

Next to raising the necessary money to get a project off the ground, it’s comparatively easy to teach yourself how to create the elements of a game. And if you’ve got a workable demo or a finished product, you can shop it around or show it off at the Game Developers Conference in an effort to pique the interest of a publisher that will hopefully pick it up for distribution. But if you’re starting from scratch, getting someone to support nothing more than an idea is a hard sell, especially in this financial climate.

  • over performing countries acording to the world bank

Thailand rated ‘over-performer’ in World Bank trade logistics survey

    By The Nation 19/01/2010

Thailand was rated one of the "over-performers" in World Bank trade logistics survey, indicating the positive trends in some areas essential to logistics performance and trade.

"Some of them include the modernization of customs, use of information technology, and development of private logistics services," the World Bank said in a statement.

Among the most significant "over-performers" among developing countries were China, which emerged 27th in ranking, India (47), Uganda (66), Vietnam (53), Thailand (35), the Philippines (44), and South Africa (28). The over-performers were announced despite a gap in the performance of rich and developing countries.

High income economies dominated the top logistics rankings, with most of them occupying important places in global and regional supply chains, the 155-nation "Logistics Performance Indicators" study showed.

By contrast, the 10 worst performing countries were all from the low and lower income groups.

Germany emerged the top performer among the 155 economies ranked in the Logistics Performance Indicators (LPI), which are included in the report Connecting to Compete 2010: Trade Logistics in the Global Economy. The study is based on the most comprehensive world survey of international freight forwarders and express carriers. Singapore was the second in a new World Bank logistics survey that measures how efficiently countries trade their goods around the world.

Sweden was adjudged the next most trade-friendly nation in the study hailed by the Washington-based institution as "the most comprehensive world survey of international freight forwarders and express carriers."

"Economic competitiveness is relentlessly driving countries to strengthen performance, and improving trade logistics is a smart way to deliver more efficiencies, lower costs and added economic growth," said bank chief Robert Zoellick.

"Streamlining the connections among markets, manufacturers, farmers and consumers offers tremendous growth and investment opportunities and should be a top focus for developing country growth strategies. As we issue this global report, I’m pleased to be in Germany, the top performer on efficient logistics."

By contrast, the 10 worst performing countries were all from the low and lower income groups.

The World Bank said the capacity of countries to efficiently move goods and connect manufacturers and consumers with international markets is improving around the world, but much more progress is needed to spur faster economic growth and help firms benefit from trade recovery.

"Following our first survey in 2007, many developing countries have improved their capacity to connect to international markets, which is a key ingredient for competitiveness and economic growth," said Otaviano Canuto, World Bank Vice President for Poverty Reduction and Economic Management. "But if developing countries want to come out of the crisis in a stronger and more competitive position, they need to invest in better trade logistics."

"Countries with better logistics performance can grow faster, become more competitive and increase their level of investment," said Bernard Hoekman, World Bank Trade Department Director. "Our research shows that increasing logistics performance in low income countries to the middle-income average could boost trade by around 15 per cent and benefit all firms and consumers through lower prices and better quality services."

Arctic Trucks’ tours of the North Pole – Click above for high-res image gallery

When Top Gear went to the North Pole – actually, to be specific, when Jeremy Clarkson and James May went to the North Pole, they went in a Toyota Hilux prepared by Arctic Trucks in Iceland. Richard Hammond went via sled-and-dog-team, which, believe it or not, looked a lot less comfortable than the satnav-equipped Hilux.

In what seems like a predictable (yet awesome) result of that odyssey, Arctic Trucks is now offering multi-day tours of Iceland in their ultimately prepped Toyotas. Having just returned from a trip to Reykjavik and the glaciers – sadly not with these blokes – we can tell you it would be an excursion you will never forget. No, it isn’t the North Pole, but we’d argue it might be even better: more variety and nicer people, and no polar bears.

Follow the jump to read the press release on Arctic Trucks’ offerings, and to watch video of Top Gear’s epic polar expedition as seen in three parts. Photos your of your balloon-tired chariot can be found in the high-res gallery below.

2010 Ford S-Max (above) and Galaxy (below right) – Click either for high-res image galleries

We can debate the relevance of the modern minivan in the North American market until the proverbial cows come home, but the fact remains that in Europe, the MPV still plays a vital role. Few know that as well as Ford does, and now the Blue Oval has unveiled mildly revised versions of its most important people-movers at the 2010 Brussels Auto Show.

Previewed in initial details and photos a full month ago, The visual tweaks to both the Galaxy and its sportier sibling, the S-Max, are admittedly minimal, but keep both looking fresh and in stride with Ford’s latest kinetic design language. LED daytime running lights and taillamps are part of the package, and there are a host of new interior trim options, complete with a new panoramic sunroof. Ford’s also offering a Blind-Spot Information System (cleverly abbreviated as BLIS), along with the new 2.0-liter, 200-horsepower, direct injection four-cylinder EcoBoost gasoline engine in addition to Duratorq diesels with 115 or 163 hp.

We took a ride in a pre-facelift S-Max on the way to the airport en route back from test driving the new Ford Fiesta in Tuscany and were suitably impressed, so any effort to keep it relevant is good in our books. That’s the short of it. If you want the long version, there’s a 70-page press release after the jump with all the information you never wanted to know about Ford’s latest European people haulers. And for your viewing pleasure, high-resolution image galleries of both are included below.

  • Melendez says he’d give Penn a real fight

After repairing his reputation, Gilbert Melendez is on a mission.
Melendez stormed out to a 13-0 start to his career then suffered upset losses in two-of-three fights to Mitsuhiro Ishida and Josh Thomson. He beat Thomson last month. That mini-saga is done, now Melendez wants to look ahead
to the rest of the 155-pounders around the world. First and foremost
Shinya Aoki, then down the road to UFC champ B.J. Penn. Melendez and
    Thomson both echoed the sentiment
that they were getting little respect
on the world scene. Melendez told Cagewriter he can beat anybody in the
    UFC or Japan:

    "B.J.’s
on another level," said Melendez (17-2). "[But] I think I could do better than a lot of guys do
    against B.J."

Penn, the UFC lightweight champion, has won his four 155-pound title fights (Kenny Florian, Sean Sherk, Joe Stevenson and Diego Sanchez) without really losing a round. He finished all four fights in nasty fashion.

"A lot of guys sit back and want to last with B.J. I’d
rather get knocked out in the center of the ring and go for it, than
sit back and try to figure it out. If things aren’t working, I’m
going to charge B.J. and try to knock him out. It’s better than just
running away and not being able to engage."

Melendez, a student of Cesar Gracie along with the Diaz brothers, is hoping to get his first big test against Japanese phenom Shinya Aoki. The 26-year-old Aoki added to his legend by breaking Mizuto Hirota’s arm in his last fight:

    "He’s
probably on a mission right now. He’s full of confidence. Before he
was probably a little more of student. He’s a master now," Melendez said of Aoki, who has become very boisterous the last year about how he’s ready to go and "kill" fighters in the U.S. "This guy
    is sounding pretty tough."

Melendez said he’s far from afraid of Aoki and his submission skills. He feels like his game is well-rounded enough to take out Aoki on the feet and he’s comfortable hitting the ground with him. He also pointed to Nate Diaz as a guy who can mimic Aoki well in training.

Melendez just wants to fight. He’d like to make the Strikeforce CBS card in April with or without Aoki.

  • Are there any supplements that a diabetic can’t take?

I was considering taking in addition to my multi-vitamin a few additional supplements such as CoQ10, magnesium, and possibly a potassium supplement. Right now I currently am taking 2-500 milligram pills of metformin two times a day and one baby aspirin. Will these supplements have any negative effects on me if I’m taking metformin?

When I mentioned to the endo awhile back that I was thinking about taking some potassium he said that my potassium levels from my bloodwork that was done when diagnosed seemed fine so it wasn’t needed. But sometimes I almost get leg cramps and was thinking potassium would help. Any ideas? Or should I check with a pharmacist?

  • Science Tattoo Emporium: How To Get In | The Loom

The Science Tattoo Emporium continues to thrive, long after I first wondered aloud in August 2007 whether scientists had any cool tattoos of their research hidden under their lab coats. I continue to get photos at a regular rate, and as I post new ones, they continue to get noticed anew by places like Digg and Boing Boing.

Initially, I was so stunned by the influx of photos that I posted just about anything that came my way. But as the emporium has grown, I’ve become choosier about which ones I post. So if you are considering sending in your own scientific ink, please read these guidelines:

    1. I’m most interested in tatoos that tell a story. The most interesting stories are the ones about how people became scientists. I love this one, for example.

    2. When you send in pictures, please include a paragraph in which you tell me who you are and explain the significance of the tattoo. I prefer people to tell the story of their tattoo in their own words.

    3. If you’ve been so inspired by the emporium that you’ve dashed out and gotten a tattoo of your own, do NOT immediately take a picture and send it to me. I don’t enjoy staring at raw, bruised flesh. Neither do readers of the Loom. Let yourself heal before grabbing the camera.

    4. Make sure the photograph is well lit and at high resolution.

  • Ooo-RAN-us | Bad Astronomy

My pal Amanda Bauer — aka Astropixie — has been posting a great series of short videos called Sixty Symbols, where scientists discuss the meanings of a given symbol in science, and the story behind them. In the latest, she tackles the pronunciation of the planet name Uranus — the name is Greek, so I think the title of this post is correct — but the video she made has lots of info on the planet, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.

Related post (and to pre-empt any Futurama jokes):
Yes, yes, rings around Uranus, haha

A perhaps sensitive subject but what are your thoughts on the death penalty?

    1. Should it never be used?

    3. should it be used for murderers in general?

    4. other – name them
