    On Fox News’ Bull & Bears, while discussing President Obama’s plan to tax the nation’s largest banks, host Brenda Buttner claimed that it’s “going to be the consumers who get hit, ultimately”; Fox Business Network host Eric Bolling agreed, responding that the tax would be passed “right down to the depositors, through ATM fees, through check fees, through lower rates.”  However, according to economist Dean Baker, since the tax “only applies to the largest banks, it would not be possible for the banks to pass it along to consumers, since they would lose market share to smaller banks who don’t pay the tax.”

    BUTTNER:  It’s going to be the consumers who get hit, ultimately, isn’t it?

    BOLLING:  Unfortunately, that’s what’s going to end up happening.  The fifty banks or so that are going to get slapped with this tax, they’re going to get fees, and they’re going to drop it right down to the depositors, through ATM fees, through check fees, through lower rates, the bottom line is –

    Baker: Not possible for banks to pass tax along to consumers

    Baker: “it would not be possible for the banks to pass [tax] along to consumers.” In a January 15 post on his American Prospect blog Beat the Press, Baker noted that since the tax applies only to the largest banks, if they passed along fees to consumers, they “would lose market share to smaller banks who don’t pay the tax. (If they could charge their customers more, why aren’t they doing it already?)” From Baker’s post:

    It would also be helpful if reporters tried to evaluate the assertion of the industry lobbyists that this (or other) taxes will simply be passed on to customers. Reporters should have the time and ability to do make such an evaluation, rather than just pass along a he said/she said to readers, almost none of whom will have the time or expertise to make this assessment.

    In the case of this tax, since it only applies to the largest banks, it would not be possible for the banks to pass it along to consumers, since they would lose market share to smaller banks who don’t pay the tax. (If they could charge their customers more, why aren’t they doing it already?) The alternative scenario, in which the large banks are able to pass on the tax, would suggest a degree of concentration in the industry which should require anti-trust action.

    Bulls & Bears claim echoed Limbaugh’s dubious assertion

    Limbaugh: “your ATM fee’s gonna go up” because of bank tax.  On the January 14 edition of his radio program, Rush Limbaugh told listeners that their lives “might get worse because your ATM fee’s gonna go up. As these banks are taxed, they’re gonna pass as much of it along to you and all of us as possible. That’s just how it works, which Obama also knows.”

    3412938456_1556bcba2dAfter activists and over 80 lawmakers, including at least eight Republicans, called on the Obama administration to grant undocumented Haitian immigrants already in the U.S. Temporary Protected Status (TPS), Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano announced yesterday afternoon that Haitian nationals who were in the U.S. at the time of the earthquake in Haiti will be permitted to over-stay their visa for the next 18 months. A statement released by DHS on behalf of Napolitano reads:

    As part of the Department’s ongoing efforts to assist Haiti following Tuesday’s devastating earthquake, I am announcing the designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals who were in the United States as of January 12, 2010.

    This is a disaster of historic proportions and this designation will allow eligible Haitian nationals in the United States to continue living and working in our country for the next 18 months. Providing a temporary refuge for Haitian nationals who are currently in the United States and whose personal safety would be endangered by returning to Haiti is part of this Administration’s continuing efforts to support Haiti’s recovery.

    Napolitano is careful to note that TPS will not be granted to those who attempt to travel to the United States after January 12, 2010 and that Haitians who try to enter the U.S. without documentation from there on out will be repatriated.

    De serie van de zomer 2009 is nu over de helft, maar alvorens de cruiseboot te verlaten in Venetië geef ik jullie even een rondleiding door deze varende reus.

    De MS Musica was ten tijde van onze cruise het vlaggenschip als vertegenwoordiger van de Musicaklasse. 4 identieke schepen (de Musica, Poesia, Orchestra en Magnifica) die wel ieder anders aangekleed zijn. De Magnifica heeft een iets andere hutindeling omdat hier een duurdere klasse is toegevoegd voor de cruisereiziger die gesteld is op luxe én klasse.

    Het schip meet 294 meter, weegt 90 ton en vaart met 23 knoppen. Aan boord zijn 1275 hutten die plaatsbieden aan maximaal 3013 passagiers. 975 bemanningsleden komen daar nog bovenop. Het kwam in 2006 in de vaart.

    Inmiddels is het niet meer de grootste klasse, de Fantasiaklasse telt op dit moment 2 schepen voor ruim 4000 (!) passagiers. En er lopen nog de nodige bestellingen…..

    4. Nou gaan we eens rondkijken op het schip. We beginnen helemaal boven in, op dek 16 heb je het zonnedek, als Kate Winslet op de punt van de boeg vliegen kun je wel vergeten (is ook niet heel erg slim om te doen…)

    25. En krijgen we een speciaal ingevlogen tenor te zien, die wel echt heel kon zingen

    26. Na het theater gaan we naar het restaurant, waar je elke avond een meergangendiner krijgt. Ze hebben twee restaurants en daar wordt in twee zittingen gedineerd. Tegen bijbetaling kun je ook nog a la carte eten in drie andere restaurants.

    27. Op de slotavond ging het natuurlijk helemaal los…

    28. Ontbijten en lunchen doe je in het buffetrestaurant, en dan kun je heerlijk aan dek zitten.

    33. Niet alle havens hebben zo’n mooie cruiseterminal als Rotterdam, soms gaat het gewoon zo.

    37. En dan is het toch echt einde cruise en verlaten wij in Venetië onze boot, er liggen er nog een paar..

    De serie zal vervolgen met een bezoek aan het Lido van Venetië, een vaartocht door de Lagune langs Murano en Burano en een bezoek aan het verlaten eiland Torcello, alvorens we koers zetten naar Rimini.

    “Vâng, thế hệ chúng tôi bất cần đạo lý” – nữ sinh Daria Generalenko “tiết lộ” tại hội thảo văn học diễn ra trong một phòng đọc sách thiếu nhi ở Sotchi (Nga). Cô cho rằng người hùng của mỗi thiếu nữ trong thời đại này là một trang công tử đẹp giai, học giỏi, con nhà giàu.

    Văn học Nga đang trải qua những biến đổi rõ rệt trong mắt bạn đọc. Nhiều nhà văn Nga hiện đã không thể, hoặc không muốn, vào vai “kỹ sư tâm hồn”, vai nhà tiên tri dẫn đường chỉ lối, vai người tìm tòi ngọn nguồn của thế sự và “chở đạo”, chuyển tải nền tảng đạo đức của lịch sử dân tộc. Nhưng nhiều người đọc Nga, theo thói quen, vẫn chờ đón ở nền văn học những “cẩm nang” cho hành trang vào thiên niên kỷ mới. Bài viết mang tựa đề: “Văn học Nga đương đại: Hình tượng anh hùng đã tàn héo, phôi pha” được cộng tác viên Lê Đỗ Huy tổng hợp từ báo chí Nga đề cập tới vấn đề này. Dưới đây là nội dung bài viết.

    Tạo đà cho một diễn đàn theo chủ đề “Hình tượng tiêu biểu của văn học Nga hiện đại”, nhưng Olga Odisharova, sinh viên Học viện Khoa học Xã hội Hắc Hải lại chọn cách “dội gáo nước lạnh”: “Tất cả những pho anh hùng ca và văn học lãng mạn chỉ là những phóng tác về những kẻ ngụy quân tử, hoặc những bài hát ru (vào giấc ngủ của hy vọng viển vông)” – Cô phản bác kinh điển văn học Nga. Olga chỉ ra rằng người hùng của cả đời sống lẫn văn học Nga hiện nay là các “đầu sỏ chính trị (oligard), nhân viên KGB, đầu gấu, bọn “skin” (đầu trọc), và các anh hùng lao động tư bản chủ nghĩa”…

    Cuộc hội thảo văn học này diễn ra trong một phòng đọc sách thiếu nhi ở Sotchi.

    Nữ sinh Dasha Geralenko, sớm sắc sảo như Tamara Kraptchenko trong Tuổi 17 (của tác giả German Metveev), đưa ra nhận định về chủ nghĩa anh hùng Nga hiện đại như sau: “Thời đại này đâu phải của những anh hùng của một “Thời gian khổ” (Dikens) nữa … Những người hùng nếu có, là chính khách chơi trò “cả vú lấp miệng em” (trong không gian chính trị Liên Xô cũ), những “dê già” cầm tiền khua “trống bỏi”, những chàng trai chấp nhận lấy phụ nữ hai con để khỏi phải đăng lính đánh nhau, những cảnh sát chơi trò “công an đi bắt quân gian … bang bang”, những tiểu thư chán đời “phê” cho đã … Đó mà là chủ nghĩa anh hùng ư?

    Inna Rydina cũng không đề cập hình tượng anh hùng kinh điển “giữa đường thấy việc bất bằng chẳng tha”. Cô mở rộng đề tài các antihero (phản anh hùng): Nhiều người trong họ như đà điểu vùi đầu trong cát bỏng. Để lẩn tránh các vấn đề xã hội gay gắt, họ kết bạn với tửu thần Vodka, hoặc với nàng tiên nâu … Cô lấy ví dụ bạn gái thân của mình, vừa giải quyết bế tắc bằng cách lao đầu từ trên nhà cao tầng xuống …Nữ sinh Daria Generalenko cho rằng người hùng của mỗi thiếu nữ trong thời đại này là một trang công tử đẹp giai, học giỏi, con nhà giầu. Từ các hiệu ăn sang trọng và các hộp đêm xa hoa, chàng đưa nàng về dinh bằng đi xe ngoại, chứ không xài thứ ôtô Motkovitch nội cà khổ. Để giành được nhân vật chính của tiểu thuyết tình cảm của đời mình (roman tiếng Nga vừa là tiểu thuyết, vừa là mối tình) như thế, Daria sẵn sàng tranh chấp với “các đối thủ” khác. “Vâng, thế hệ chúng tôi bất cần đạo lý (cynic)”, cô tiết lộ.

    Giấy rách có giữ được lề?

    Các trang nam tử góp tiếng nói thưa hơn trong các thảo luận văn học. Nam sinh Georgy Peshkov cho rằng, xưa kia cũng có những thời kỳ xã hội suy đồi, nhưng người ta vẫn giữ được nhân cách, như Petchorin trong “Một anh hùng thời đại”, chứ không như ngày nay.

    Egor Logviniuk nhận định, chuyện “hoàng tử kỵ bạch m㔠(прынц на белом коне – một khảo dị của Ucraina cho “Cánh buồm đỏ thắm”) nay chỉ còn là nhãn mác cho xã hội tiêu thụ. Cậu khẳng định: danh từ “anh hùng” đã mất chỗ trong tự điển, đã kém phổ cập, đã bị cuộc sống từ bỏ.

    Nhưng Egor chỉ ra một người thày thuốc phẫu thuật suốt đêm không nghỉ để cứu mạng bệnh nhân, người đàn bà (bị chồng bỏ) làm một lúc nhiều nghề nuôi dạy đàn con khôn lớn, người công an thuyết phục giặc cướp trả lại mạng sống cho con tin … vẫn là những hình ảnh cần được văn học đương đại chọn làm nhân vật chính.

    Iulia Shliahova, nữ sinh trường tư thục, một nhà thơ trẻ, vụt sáng lên như một ngôi sao trong đêm với ý kiến sau: “Tôi không cần những trang công tử phóng Mercedes. Theo tôi, người anh hùng phải là người đáng yêu, đáng quý, đáng trọng. Ngay cả khi không được thiên hạ đánh giá cao, người ấy vẫn là thần tượng của đời tôi”.

    Tania Ukolova, vừa tốt nghiệp khoa Triết, cho rằng những ai theo đuổi lao động nghệ thuật giàu tính sáng tạo trong thời đại “rôbốt” hiện nay vẫn xứng đáng là những anh hùng.

    Những ý kiến của diễn đàn cho rằng, sống chân thành và trọng danh dự hiện nay là “lập dị”, là “ngố”, rằng ngày nay người với người như sói, muốn tiến lên chỉ còn cách “đạp lên đầu nhau” … đã bị Djamilia Gorbatchenko phản bác.

    Cô cho rằng, trong xã hội đơn hướng unidirectional – chỉ theo một định hướng: đồng tiền) hiện tại, những cử chỉ vô tư, không vụ lợi, lối sống trung thực, đức độ, chính là biểu hiện của chủ nghĩa anh hùng.

    Djamilia đưa ra hai ví dụ về thày giáo và thày thuốc làm trụ cho luận điểm của mình. Một là bà giáo dạy toán của lớp cô. Đã 70 tuổi nhưng vẫn được trường giữ lại giảng dạy, bà kiên trì “đào tạo những con người, chứ không nhất thiết phải là những nhà toán học”. Sống với đồng lương giáo viên ít ỏi, nhưng bà vẫn trung thành với trường phái sư phạm Xô Viết … Thứ hai, trái với ý kiến chung là các bác sĩ hiện nay thường cố tình đưa ra những chẩn đoán “xấu” để moi tiền của bệnh nhân, nữ bác sĩ ở bệnh viện khu phố của Djamilia luôn nghiêm trang nhưng giàu lòng trắc ẩn, tận tụy, có tay nghề cao … Đành rằng, đồng tiền là quan trọng, nhưng nó không mua được sự ân cần, vị tha. Trái lại, nếu chạy theo nó thì dễ đánh mất lương tâm nghề nghiệp, sống bất chấp luật lệ và đạo lý …

    Djamilia nghĩ rằng thời thế không tạo anh hùng. Nếu bạn là người có đức thì hoàn cảnh ngặt nghèo sẽ càng thúc đẩy những giải pháp đúng đắn, “cái khó ló cái khôn”. Những người có tài, có đức thường cuốn hút lẫn nhau, và ở hiền vẫn gặp lành.

    Dưới mắt nữ thi sĩ trẻ Iulia Shliahova không có hình tượng anh hùng chung cho mọi người, chỉ có thần tượng (ideal) cho từng người. Iulia cho rằng, hiện nay, khác với các thời đại khác, không còn những anh hùng (trong trang sách và trên trường đời) mà mọi người sẵn sàng đi theo, bất chấp hy sinh gian khổ. Thần tượng này có thể không có sẵn, cần phải tìm tòi, và có người tới cuối đời vẫn không tìm được.

    Nhưng, đa số các ý kiến của diễn đàn vẫn thiên về tâm lý “chụp giựt”, “phò thịnh” bằng mọi giá. Quan trọng là thành đạt (về danh vọng, tiền bạc), còn thành đạt bằng cách nào là không quan trọng.

    That lovable little Windows 7-powered Cowon W2 MID has gotten two steps closer to reality this week with a price tag and release date. In order, 599,000 to 739,000KRW (equivalent to $533 and $658 in US, respectively) and Monday, January 25th. Unfortunately, those only apply to Korea only, but if you are thinking of importing, how about we take a look at the full specs list: 4.8-inc WSVGA screen, 1.3GHz Intel Atom Z520, 1GB RAM, 60GB or 80GB HDD, Bluetooth 2.0, 802.11b/g WiFi, two USB one miniUSB ports, and a battery promising 10 hours idle / 7 hours video playback. Yeah, we’re not sure about that netbook-caliber processor either, but surely that MID form factor makes up for something… right?

  • McAfee Calls Operation Aurora A “Watershed Moment In Cybersecurity”, Offers Guidance

    Computer and software security company McAfee last week identified a vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer as a key vector in the cyberattacks that hit Google and over 30 other companies in a high-profile, multi-staged and concentrated effort to hack into specific computer systems in order to obtain intellectual property.

    Redmond has since issued a security advisory and later published its own risk assessment of the zero-day threat. This morning, McAfee announced that it is offering consumers and businesses further guidance on what it refers to as ‘Operation Aurora’.

    And it’s bringing out the superlatives to describe the attacks.

    George Kurtz, McAfee’s worldwide chief technology officer, has been blogging about how the browser vulnerability was exploited for the cyberheist and is now quoted in this morning’s press release as saying that it is the “largest and most sophisticated cyberattack we have seen in years targeted at specific corporations”.

    Kurtz stops short of saying that the planet nearly stopped spinning, but refers to the attack as a “watershed moment in cybersecurity” that has “changed the world”.

    McAfee, of course, has a commercial interest in spreading the word about the attack and how its security products can guard consumers and businesses from exploitation of the aforementioned Internet Explorer vulnerability, but the company is doing a service too, considering the fact that the code used to exploit the security hole has made its way to the public domain already.

    Needless to say, this increases the risk of further, more widespread attacks significantly.
