  • School Closings Mi, School Closings Michigan 2010 Information

Many of Michigan’s school districts suffered major problems in 2009, with some of the largest forced to close buildings.
Mayor Mark Winslow says the city is also hurting. “Even in good times, it would…affect us.”

The biggest hit comes from lost sewer and water revenue. That totals $34,000 a month.

“We’ve made some budget cuts,” Winslow said.

Those cuts total $70,000 so far.

Winslow says the city has even asked the state for help. “If there’s any, any relief we could get on our bonds. And basically, what we’re being told is we borrowed the money, we have to pay it back.”

Back at Tony’s Tacos relief will only come if the prison reopens. “We want to see how things go, and hopefully, they’ll bring something in here to town. That’s what we really need,” said Hernandez.

Despite losing two bids for prisoners over the last few weeks, there is still hope for the now-closed Standish Maximum Correctional facility. The state is drafting a proposal to house some California prisoners there.

The prison had been a contender to house Pennsylvania prisoners and Guantanamo Bay detainees.

The National Weather Service is calling for rain before 1 p.m. followed by snow. The temperature is expected to hit 38 degrees by 9 a.m. then fall to abou 33 degrees for the remainder of the day.

It will be windy today with gusts up to 39 miles per hour. Total snow accumulation of less than 1 inch is possible.

Snow showers are expected to continue overnight with accumulation of 1 to 2 inches.

  • Google plans energy subsidiary known as Google Energy

    Google_Energy.jpg
Google has played its part in saving the environment and has showed interest in using cleaner technology before. And now, the company has decided on launching its own energy subsidiary called Google Energy. This is an effort by Google in its aim to achieve carbon neutrality. Formed on December 16, 2009, the Delaware based company publicized its intentions earlier this week to join the power game by buying and selling electricity in the market. This will help Google sell excess power to the grid and lower its energy consumption. Currently, the search engine biggie has a 1.6Mw solar arrangement at the Mountain View headquarters. Though there aren’t any fixed plans yet, Google has also planned to make renewable sources of energy cheaper than the useof coal. If all goes well, Google will help change the way the lights turn on.

  • The FCC Calls for a Standard Set-Top Box: Open Box, Open Market, Open Mind?

    Keith Kocho wrote:

I may be in the minority, but I think the FCC’s recent call for an open, retail-ready set-top box standard could be a boon for incumbent service providers, their technology partners, and consumers. The cable companies, who charge a nice little fee for set-top box rentals, may say that regulation will cost them the revenues that drive innovation and support network build-out and that the current market is fine as it is. That said, it’s a mistake to assume that video service providers aren’t also embracing the Internet video revolution–all you have to do is look at Comcast’s Excalibur announcement. Either way, no one in the industry expects to wake up anytime soon to a world where the majority of their existing customers have “cut the cord” in favor of over-the-top internet delivered video services.

The reasons for this are articles on their own, but a new era of scalable Internet video services from cable/telco/satellite providers is absolutely coming. Why? They realize that Internet technologies are more flexible than their existing closed technology offerings, that they can deploy competitive offerings to consumers much more quickly, and that making these investments now prepares them delivering their services outside their traditional network footprint. They also know that Apple/Google/Microsoft will nibble away at their subscribers as broadband speeds grow and the FCC continues its current support of net neutrality. As this evolves, they are preparing to change their model to head off this new competitive threat.

In this light, the wide availability of a consumer-friendly Internet set-top box should be music to their ears. While it won’t convert meaningful numbers of existing pay-TV customers on day one, it will allow these companies to compete with other organizations who can amortize a hardware investment against a much larger target customer base (e.g. Apple/Google/Microsoft). If a standards-based set-top box allows the incumbent service providers to bridge competitively into the new world order, they’ll readily embrace it. Meanwhile, if traditional providers of proprietary set-top boxes can preserve their lucrative service provider contracts and also pursue a new, global retail opportunity, they will build them too. Finally, if these new devices provide a compelling feature set, tied to a competitive content offering, the consumers will come as well.

I look forward to the day when I can purchase my set-top box at retail and freely choose a la carte service offerings from existing providers who are today hemmed into their own geographies as well as a new slate of competitive upstarts. That said, whether or not we see a regulated, open set-top box standard, the world of truly a la carte Internet-delivered video services is coming. This week at the Consumer Electronics Show, we will undoubtedly see another wave of connected TVs and consumer boxes from folks like Boxee, Blu-ray player manufacturers and others. A successful reference design set-top box would dramatically accelerate this inevitable shift by lending itself to incorporation into even more devices.

Far from the competitive nightmare some would suggest, a standards-based set-top box will allow service providers to focus on their real assets and differentiators—multiple customer touch points (TV, mobile, broadband), recurring billing relationships, customer service, and the massive scale to deploy and deliver multi-screen video to millions of users. So I don’t think it is a stretch to think this scenario can become a reality fairly soon. And when it does, it could make a lot of people happy.

Every January fills us with optimism, a clearer sense of purpose, and the goal of positive change, AKA the New Year’s resolution. That’s right; it’s time to lose the FUPA, stop smoking, quit gambling, cut down on the booze, go to church on Sunday, and volunteer at a local orphanage giving hugs. For us here at TTP headquarters, we are giving up dating girls named JWoww and are selling the office didgeridoo.

  • Esportivo a moda brasileira?

  • Organizing for 2010

Filing systemDid hell freeze over and someone forgot to tell me? I didn’t notice, but was the moon in the 7th house and Jupiter aligned with Mars? (Age
    of Aquarius
? Doesn’t ring a bell? Never mind.) I don’t know what rare event occurred, but something influenced me last weekend, because I did something that I never do… I organized my paperwork! Just last week, in my blog, I mentioned my total lack of interest in organizing, but on Saturday, something compelled me to sit down to
sift through the mounds of paper.

My first inclination was to take all of my paper crap (technical term) and, without sorting through any of it, just dump it in a plastic bin to be stashed in the garage attic, never to see the light of day. I resisted that urge and sorted
through it. I discovered that quite a bit of it could be thrown away. I organized and filed everything in the expandable folder I had purchased a year ago. I labeled the folder “2009 Crap” (again with the technical jargon). Then I went to an office supply store and purchased another folder for my 2010 paperwork.

I learned 3 things from this organizing activity:

    1. I feel better when I don’t have all of that clutter surrounding me. It was actually making me feel stressed to see it;
    2. I already have most of my stuff pulled together for the upcoming tax season. I am practically giddy with the thought that I won’t be scrambling at the last minute this year; and
    3. My desk is pretty. It is made of a lovely cherry wood. Who knew?

Am I turning over a new leaf, and will I permanently stay organized? Probably not. Hopefully, another celestial event will drive me to organize again next year, but for now I am feeling very pleased with myself..

If you are like me, you may need a little inspiration to get your office and home life more organized and ready for 2010. Here are some resources that offer some organizational tips and tricks, helpful guidance on what to keep, and where to get copies of
    important documents:

Now, if only someone could send some inspiration my way to get me motivated to organize and put away my Christmas stuff! My goal is to have it all stowed away by Easter….maybe! LOL.

  • Frozen Britain

The BBC has a report on freezing (and energy guzzling) Britain – No respite as UK hit by coldest night of winter.

The UK has suffered its coldest night of the winter so far with temperatures plummeting to -22.3C (-8.1F) in a village in Sutherland in the Highlands. …

Meanwhile, 27 firms – 12 in the East Midlands and 15 in the North West – are still using alternative fuels after National Grid told them to turn off their gas supply, with demand for energy soaring. At one stage on Thursday, 95 major firms were affected.

Environment Secretary Hilary Benn insisted there were “plenty of supplies” of gas, with storage about 70% full. He said firms affected were on special contracts – paying less but losing supplies when demand was high – and that there was no need for domestic customers to worry.

Of some 5,000 homes in southern England which were without power throughout Thursday, all but “a few hundred” were reconnected overnight, energy suppliers said.

  • Bluenergy’s SolarWind turbines collect wind as well as solar energy

bluenergy-solarwind-turbine.jpg The combination of solar energy and wind energy will be like an ice cream with sprinkles with the project by the company Bluenergy that is currently working on the fusion of these two renewable energies. The SolarWind turbine by Bluenergy is basically a helical wind generator. The surface of this is covered with photovoltaic cells. Winds at up to 90 mph and the sun shining brightly is what these generators need to collect energy and generate electricity. Even at low wind conditions and with the sun refusing to shine enough, these turbines turn because of Bluenergy’s awesome designing. Also, the helical design of the turbines enables the photovoltaic cells to receive maximum energy from the sun.

The use of solar and wind energy is finding its way in the market and with inventions and innovations like these, are sure to help increase the use of renewable sources of energy, making our planet a greener and cleaner place to live in.

  • New common Sensor API by Chainfire aims to support LG, many other smartphones

Now we know Microsoft should be doing this work, and we suspect strongly it will come bundled in Windows Mobile 7, but until then we still need a Sensor SDK which can be used by across all Windows Mobile handsets, not just HTC’s.  Koushik Dutta’s Sensor API is of course a good start, but since he has moved to Android the project has not seen much updates, with only some additions to support Samsung.

Chainfire, well known for his driver hacking, aims to start anew with a new API which covers as many OEMs as possible, including HTC, Samsung, LG and Toshiba. Currently the library only covers G-Sensor and Digital Compasses, but he aims to extend it to other sensors such as proximity sensors also.

    Currently the library supports:

    GSensor support:

    • HTC
    • Samsung SDK 2.x
    • Samsung SDK 1.x
    • Samsung < 2009 raw
    • Samsung >= 2009 raw
    • E-Ten/Acer
    • Toshiba
    • LG

    Compass support:

    • HTC
    • Samsung SDK 2.x

    Planned light sensor support:

    • HTC
    • Samsung SDK 2.x
    • Samsung SDK 1.x
    • LG

    Planned proximity sensor support:

    • HTC
    • Samsung SDK 2.x
    • LG

The software has been tested on the following handsets:

Uniquely the software works in unattended mode, meaning the app can run with minimal power use while it appears to be suspended.

NEW CBD SET TO EMERGE IN WEST CHANGCHUN
    6 January 2010
    China Daily

Founded a year ago – on December 29, 2008 – the Western New Town Development Zone is among the newest commercial sites in Changchun.

Despite its fledgling status, the zone has already proved its appeal to financiers who are keen to invest in Changchun, the capital of the northeastern Jilin province, and one of the famous cultural cities in northeast Asia.

According to Wang Tingkai, head of the government of the Liuyuan district, the new complex benefits from being the proposed site for the Changchun Western Passenger Railway Station and from neighboring China’s largest automobile manufacturing base, the Changchun Automobile Industrial Park.

Work began on the new station in September and is scheduled for completion in 2011.

Wang said the new railway station will establish the zone as a major transportation hub within Jilin and will act as a gateway to the whole of northeast China. Once completed, the station will provide access to a number of high-speed lines linking Harbin and Dalian and Harbin and Beijing.

Once operational, it will take only four hours to travel between Changchun and Beijing, three hours between Changchun and Dalian and one hour between Changchun, Shenyang and Harbin.

The development zone is also adjacent to a number of well-known local businesses, including the First Auto Works, the largest automaker in China, the Dacheng Group, the largest corn processing enterprise in Asia and the fourth largest in world, the Haoyue Group, the nation’s largest beef processing company and the Changchun Railway Vehicles Co Ltd.

Wang said: "Such industrial giants will have a huge demand for ancillary businesses to provide equipment, spare parts and related services."

    The western CBD

Wang said that the development zone now has a detailed development plan in place, with the aim of ultimately establishing the zone as the western central business district (CBD) of Changchun.

Outlining its appeal, Wang said: "Highlighting the modern service industries and its excellent environment, the western CBD will be a suitable place for both business and residential purposes. With a number of business facilities, including office buildings, under construction, the zone will also be the ideal site for both international and local companies to establish their regional headquarters."

Changchun is located at the geographic center of northeast China. The Western New Town Development Zone is expected to make use of this geographical advantage to develop a business hub serving any company looking to access the potentially huge northeastern market.

With regard to environmental improvements, Wang said the zone is committed to investing in a major upgrade to its water resources, currently served by the Tongxin Lake, the Xinglong Lake and the Daliutun Reservoir. Plans are also in place to plant more trees and increase the grass coverage in parks and along the roadsides.

On the infrastructure front, the local government has earmarked funds for the construction of a new light railway, an enhanced subway network and major additions to the road network.

According to Wang, the zone will encompass a 13 sq km development stretching from the Western Third Ring Road in the east, the Western Fourth Ring Road in the west, Zili West Street in the south and the Haoyue Road to the north.

    Six functional areas

Wang said the zone will be composed of six functional areas – a transportation hub, a business area by the railway station, an office complex, an information industry area, a tourism center and a residential area.

The transportation hub will include the 220,000 sq m Changchun Western Passenger Railway Station and other access points, including roads, subways and light railways.

The business area will focus on finance, shopping, catering, entertainment and consultation sectors.

The office complex will be located on Jingyang Avenue, the east-west axis of both Changchun and the development zone. With facilities such as serviced offices, exhibition and convention venues and high-end hotels, this will be the core of the city’s CBD and an ideal site for any company’s regional headquarters.

The information industry area, also adjacent to the railway station, will highlight the design, research and development, exhibition, marketing and hi-tech products sectors.

The tourism zone, on the banks of the Xinglong Lake, will offer a number of leisure facilities, including bars, restaurants, museums and galleries.

A range of high-end residential facilities will be built near the Xinglong and Tongxin lakes, complete with a raft of service facilities, notably hospitals, schools and shops.

According to Wang, construction of the major infrastructure facilities in the zone will be completed within two years. As a number of multinationals and famous domestic companies establish their operations there, it is expected to achieve its full potential as a business and residential center within eight years.

  • New in the App Catalog for 07 January 2010

App CatalogSo yesterday might have been a big day at CES 2010 for Palm. We got the Palm Pre Plus and the Pixi Plus, and they’re going to be exclusive to Verizon. We got the Pre headed to SFR in France. We got Flash, a webOS App Gallery on PreCentral, video recording, and webOS 1.4. But what’s exciting, and what we get right now, is new apps. And those new apps come with 3D gaming, ala the iPhone. In fact, Palm’s new Plug-in Development Kit allows developers to make C and C++ apps that will work beautifully on webOS. As such, developers like EA, Gameloft, and Glu are here and showing off what that delicious hardware is really capable of. Curious what games are available? Well, while you’re waiting for the App Catalog to load, we recommend you hope right past the break and catch a glimpse for yourself of our daily list.
