  • The spooky power of Google Suggest

Some people buy new cars every few years.
We drive our cars into the ground. Our 12 yo Subaru wagon won’t start, so it’s a goner. There’s not much to salvage, except our uber-geeky SONY CDX-GT610UI MP3, AAC, USB, iPod etc car stereo.
I didn’t know how to remove it, so I start typing “how to remove car ..” and Google gives me several good options, including one that talks about doing without a “DIN tool”.
Where can I buy a DIN tool? Google suggest throws up the Walmart.com: Scosche DIN Radio Removal Tool.
The searches themselves were anticlimactic. Google Suggest had already done the heavy lifting.
    Amazing.
PS. Ok, so the reality isn’t quite as magical as I make it out to be. I had the PDF installation guide and between it and some light Google work I figured out I actually need a special anti-theft SONY-specific “release key”. Still, Google Suggest is seriously cool.
Update 1/9/10: Ok, so, in retrospect, my first search was wrong. Turned out that my 12 yo Subara installation didn’t use the standard kit at all. Wiki Answers told me how to remove the unit from my 1997 Subaru Legacy. I did, however, discover something interesting about the business of selling answers.

  • Energizer’s Energi to Go Solar Charger Uses Futuristic Sun Heat Power for Your Gadgets [Solar Power]

Energizer just announced two new portable solar chargers, the SP1000 and SP2000, both of which provide power through an AC or USB adapter. If you’re into that kind of hippie “let’s not destroy the earth” stuff, this looks pretty good.

The SP1000 is a 1000mAh charger, while the SP2000 is, predictably, double that, but both can be charged either from outdoor or indoor light, or via AC if you’re in a rush (it takes six hours to charge via light and half that via AC). They’re available now, with the SP1000 coming in at a very reasonably $50 and the SP2000 at $100. [Energizer]

  • Tunebug Gives Your Extreme Sports A Soundtrack With Vibrations [Tunebug]

Though nothing I do these days involves a helmet of any kind, if I was an extreme sports maven, I’d rock a Tunebug at all times. My skull wasn’t the best speaker, but Tunebug kept it a safe one.

Would you ever wear headphones while driving a car? Of course not, it’s dangerous—having your ears open seems like an essential part of staying safe while operating a vehicle. Now why would it be any safer to plug your ears with earbuds while riding a bike or a skateboard?

The Tunebug, by SVC, uses SurfaceSound vibrations to turn your helmet into a surround sound speaker, letting you keep your ears open to potential hazards around you. The unit straps to any helmet with three strong velcro buttons and can play music via Bluetooth or an aux-in plug. In the chaotic Pepcom convention hall the sound didn’t exact rock my world, but it seemed like the Tunebug’s vibrations would be powerful enough to give you a nice, audible soundtrack in calmer environs.

The Tunebug module detaches from its helmet cradle to turn any surface into a speaker. Look for the Tunebug Vibe for $70 in Q2 2010.

  • Samsung 3D OLED Display is Practically Paper Thin [Oled]

Looking at the pictures this OLED concept produces is the strangest thing: a 3D image on a nearly 2D panel.

The 14-inch panel is just 1.6mm think, and if you look at it from the side you might miss it completely. It’s at least three years away from being ready—much less affordable—at sizes that would make it worth owning, but even in the concept it’s a pretty incredible feat of engineering.

  • Ballmer Keynote Microsoft Ces 2010

“Scheduled to be available in holiday season 2010, ‘Project Natal’ is only the most recent example of Microsoft’s work creating natural user interfaces,” reads a press release of the morning’s events.
In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised to see some more firm dates applied to both Project Natal—maybe even getting a peek at some non-game related demonstrations—and Game Room, confirmation of which leaked earlier today. Read on for our up to the minute liveblog of Microsoft’s CES keynote if you want to know what Steve Ballmer and crew will be doing for the next hour.
We’re sure HP and Microsoft will have some interesting things to say about it, but a lot of hearts are breaking out there. Other big items: Project Natal will launch around the holidays in 2010, the HTC HD2 will hit T-Mobile as expected, and the Mediaroom 2.0 IPTVs service will bring on-demand programming to PCs and phones. The full PR is after the break, but we’ll post highlights here if we see anything else as we comb through.

And now, let’s review the (in our view) 15 most stimulating articles of 2009.

    The Big Picture

100 is the new 65: Why do some people live, and well, to 100? Researchers are trying to find out, reports Meera Lee Sethi at Greater Good Magazine.

Learning about Learning: an Interview with Joshua Waitzkin: Scott Barry Kaufman interviews “child prodigy” Joshua Waitzkin on The Art of Learning.

Debunking 10 Brain Health Myths: Does your brain have a “Brain Age”? Is a Magic Pill to prevent memory problems right around the corner?  Check out the facts to debunk 10 common myths.

Why is working memory relevant to reading and mathematics: A recent large UK study identified 1 in 10 students as having working memory difficulties. Dr. Tracy Alloway elaborates why this matters.

Change Your Environment, Change Yourself: Dr. Brett Steenbarger explains why new environments  force us to exit our routines and actively master unfamiliar challenges.”

    Tools

Retooling Use it or lose it: Alvaro Fernandez discusses why routine, doing things inside our comfort zones, is the most common enemy of the novelty, variety and challenge our brains need.

Does cognitive training work? (For Whom? For What?): Dr. Pascale Michelon, dissects a couple of recent press releases and the underlying studies to clarifying what they mean – and what they don’t mean.

New Study Supports Neurofeedback Treatment for ADHD: Dr. David Rabiner reports the promising findings from the first well-designed controlled trial on the effect of neurofeedback treatment for ADHD.

Do Art Classes Boost Test Scores? Is there a “Mozart Effect?”: Some researchers suggest so; others are not convinced. Karin Evans offers a  thoughtful review of the evidence and asks, “Now, is this the right question?”

Does coffee boost cognitive functions over time? Dr. Pascale Michelon reports good news (long-term effects seem more positive than negative, so coffee leads to no clear harm) and bad ones (no clear beneficial effects on general brain functions).

    Industry

Brain fitness heads towards its tipping point: How do you know when something is moving towards a Gladwellian tipping point? When insurance companies and policy makers pay attention, Dr. Gerard Finnemore reports.

Visual Representation of the State of the Market 2009: Paul Van Slembrouck beautifully presents the main findings of our 150-page market report, The State of the Brain Fitness Market 2009.

Michael Merzenich on brain fitness: neuroscientist Michael Merzenich discusses neuroplasticity, technology, safe driving, mental health, and the need for standards, automated assessments and “personal brain trainers”.

    Brain Teaser

Stimulate your Concentration Skills: when one really wants to memorize a fact, it is crucial to pay attention. Dr. Pascale Michelon challenges you to count a few simple letters.

    Resolution

Finally, an article that may inspire some New Year Resolutions. In Yes, You Can Build Willpower, Daniel Goleman discusses how the brain makes about 10,000 new cells every day, how they migrate to where they are needed, and how each cell can make around 10,000 connections to other brain cells. Implication? Meditate, mindfully, and build positive habits.

Wishing you a Happy and Productive 2010, and looking forward to meeting many of you (200 so far) at the inaugural SharpBrains Summit!

  • Long SUrvival with High Blood Sugar

The Joslin Medalist study of type 1 diabetic patients who have lived 50 years or more with their disease shows that most of them have minimal diabetic vascular and neurological complications. Surprisingly, it was found that this group of patients had an average HbA1c of over 10% — an enormously high blood sugar value. This corresponds to a finding in the DCCT study, which showed that 40% of type 1 diabetics who had an average HbA1c value greater than 9.8% had absolutely no development of retinopathy during 10 years of follow-up. A recent case resport of a patient who had had type 1 diabetes for 69 years but had developed no retinopathy despite very poor blood sugar control is consistent with these findings, which indicate that there are still a number of hidden variables determining whether hyperglycemia has a negative impact on patients or not.

  • ARTICLE: 4G: Sprint Overdrive 3G/4G hotspot launches

Sprint held a very over the top event tonight to announce … well, kinda not much.

The Sprint Overdrive 3G/4G hotspot will sell for $99.99 with a two-year contract. The device serves as a 3G/4G mobile hotspot (WiFi modem) and integrates GPS and a microSD card slot. The device is manufactured by Sierra Wireless and everyone from to comedian Frank Caliendo to Dan Hesse (Sprint CEO) to the head of Best Buy to that Ballmer guy from Microsoft got up on stage to trump it up.

But, honestly, how many markets is Sprint’s 4G available in? And why does the rest of the US market care?

I love you, Sprint, I really do. I admire your pluck and your ultra-solid network performance and your willingness to take risks in the consumer product space (“Upstage,” anyone?) … but without a nationwide 4G rollout this was kind of a yawnfest punctuated by old white guys with not much to say.

But hey, I hear Mario Batali made snacks for everyone …

  • Microsoft confirms fall 2010 launch date for Project Natal

natalMicrosoft confirmed today that it plans to ship Project Natal, a new add-on for the Xbox 360 where you can control a game with your own body motions rather than a controller, will ship in the fall of 2010.

We wrote a story about the shipment date last year about when Natal would ship, but Microsoft never confirmed it until today during Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer’s keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show. Microsoft announced the project at the E3 trade show last summer.

Lots of companies are working on Natal-based games, but neither Ballmer nor Robbie Bach, head of the Entertainment & Devices division, talked about any of those games in the works. With Natal, players will be able to control a game with body movements, since a webcam atop a TV can capture the movements and translate them into controls for the Xbox 360. Natal will be able to recognize faces of players, receive images of objects scanned into it via the webcam, and discern the different voices of players in the room.

Bach showed a video that showed the genesis of Natal in Microsoft Research. (An image from it showing body tracking is shown above). Unfortunately, he didn’t show a live demo of Natal in action, but that’s because CES isn’t really a gaming show.

  • Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer confirms HP tablet, er, “slate PC”

hp tablet 1Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer just demonstrated a tablet computer built by Hewlett Packard and powered by the Windows 7 operating system.

Ballmer was on-stage at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where The New York Times previously reported he would announce a tablet, perhaps to beat Apple’s expected tablet announcement later this month.

The demo was pretty short, and Ballmer didn’t offer many details. He actually had three computers that he called “slate PCs” on-stage, which he said are “almost as portable as a phone and as powerful as a PC running Windows 7.” The difference between a slate and a tablet seems to mostly be one of terminology. Ballmer didn’t offer product names either, just said one was manufactured by Pegatron, one by Archos, and the third by HP.

hp tablet 2Ballmer’s HP demo involved reading a book using Kindle software. Using the touchscreen, he swiped through the pages, then went onto Amazon, where he purchased and downloaded another e-book. He also started playing a video, though the conference room’s impressive AV system took over quickly.
The Times said the tablet would have multi-touch capabilities, but I didn’t see any evidence of that in the demo. Also as predicted, the HP slate did not resemble the Courier project whose photos were leaked last year.

  • Lifetime sales of Xbox 360 top 39M, $20 billion in revenues

xbox 360Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer said today that lifetime sales of the Xbox 360 have hit 39 million game consoles sold. Since the launch in 2005, more than 500 million games have been sold, generating revenues of $20 billion in sales to date.

That number includes the total sold during 2009, which likely means that Microsoft remains well ahead of third place Sony, which said it sold 3.8 million PlayStation 3 consoles during the holidays.

Robbie Bach, (right) head of the Entertainment & Devices division at Microsoft, said top games coming in 2010 include Mass Effect 2 on Jan. 26 from BioWare/Electronic Arts, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction from Ubisoft, and the psychological thriller Alan Wake from Microsoft and Remedy. Also coming are new installments in Fable, Crackdown and downloadable maps for Modern Warfare 2, exclusively first on the Xbox 360.

The biggest game coming this fall is Halo Reach, the latest in a series that has sold more than 30 million games, 5 million books, 500,000 music CDs, and lots of toys.

Bach said Xbox Live has more than 20 million numbers, which is not a new number Microsoft is launching Game Room titles on Xbox Live and on Windows. You can play those games on either the PC or Xbox Live. The non-game use of the Xbox 360 is going up with things like avatars. Users have created 200 million outfits for their avatars since they were introduced a year ago. About 100 million songs have been downloaded through Xbox Live thanks to games like Guitar Hero. In late 2009, Microsoft launched Twitter and Facebook access on the Xbox 360.

  • Oovoo extends its six-way video conference service to smartphones

oovooDetails have been hard to come by, but videoconference service Oovoo will definitely announce a new mobile product at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Wednesday. It’s unclear whether or not there’ll be a demo.

The photo above shows a six-person Oovoo conference taking place across six monitors last fall, powered by one AMD ATI graphics chip.

Up until now, Oovoo has been available both as a Mac or PC download, or as a browser-based service. The next step is obviously onto mobile screens.

“With more consumers and businesses using smartphones and smartbooks and with the increased bandwidth capabilities of 4G networks, we can now bring our high-quality video calling to these mobile devices,” CEO Philippe Schwartz said in a prepared statement.

What makes Oovoo special is its combo of deep features —  high-resolution video, video conversation recording, telephony, desktop sharing, video messaging, instant message chat, and file sharing — coupled with the fact it can handle a six-way conference without flaming out. That’s why AMD used it for the ATI demo.

Pricing will supposedly stay the same: Free for two people, with the option of a monthly fee or a pay-per-use fee to accomodate three to six participants and let you dial direct to their phones. Whether or not you’ll be able to talk to five other people from your phone, and what kind of phones will work with Oovoo, we’ll find out on Wednesday.

Oovoo is a New York-based company founded in 2007, and privately funded.

  • Falafel (Version 1)( Legumes – Chickpea )

    Daily Random Recipe

    INGREDIENTS:

      • 1 cup dried chickpeas, soaked in 5 cups of water for 25 hours
      • 1 t baking soda
      • 1 t salt
      • 1/2 cup very finely minced onion
      • 2 T very finely minced parsley
      • 1 t ground roasted cumin seeds
      • 1 t ground coriander
      • 2 cloves garlic, peeled and mashed to a pulp
      • Freshly ground pepper
      • 1 T lemon juice
      • A pinch (or more) of cayenne pepper
      • Oil for frying

    METHOD:
Drain the chickpeas and put them into the container of a good processor or blender. Add the baking soda and salt. Turn the machine on and blend until you have the texture of coarse bread crumbs or fine bulgar wheat. You should NOT have a paste.

Empty the chickpeas into a bowl. Add the onion, parsley, cumin, coriander, garlic, black pepper, lemon juice, and cayenne. Mix gently with a fork. Do not pat down. This mixture should be loose and crumbly.

Put 2 inches / 5 cm of oil in a wok or other utensil for deep frying and set to a heat on a medium-low flame. You need a temperature of 350F to 375F (180C to 190C).

While the oil heats, form the first batch of patties. Using a very light touch, form patties that are about 2 1/4 inches / 5.5 cm in diameter, about 3/4 inch / 1.9 cm thick in the center and less so at the edges. Do not pat down or try to be too neat. The patties should just about hold together.

Put as many patties into the hot oil as the utensil will hold in a single layer. Fry about 4 minutes or until the patties a reddish brown on both sides. Turn at least once during the frying process. When the patties are done, remove them with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel. Do all of the patties this way.

Serve hot, with tahini dipping sauce. You may also tear open an end off a pita bread, stuff in two falafel and some shredded lettuce and sliced tomatoes, and then douse the stuffing with 2 T of tahini sauce to make a middle eastern sandwich. Don’t forget to add the hot chilli pepper sauce or tabasco.

    Makes about 18 patties.

  • Ballmer keynote round-up for Windows Mobile

    ces2010

Almost as if standard, there was not much in this keynote speech for Windows Mobile fans, but the titbits which did drop were tasty enough.

The biggest is likely the confirmation the HTC HD2 is coming to T-Mobile USA in Spring this year.

The next is that some kind of Video of Demand service is coming to Windows Mobile (seemingly part of a general VOD service for PC and X-Box).

Lastly, that we will be hearing more about Windows Phones at Mobile World Congress next month, which is where hopefully we will finally hear more about Windows Mobile 7.

Did anyone note anything else of interest, and did anyone expect more? Let us know your impressions of the speech below.
