Fed’s Duke sees low rates for “extended period” – David Lawder – The Federal Reserve sees a moderate economic recovery continuing in 2010, but needs to keep interest rates “exceptionally low” for an “extended period” to foster job growth, a Fed policymaker said on Monday.  Fed Governor Elizabeth Duke told an economic forum that slack in the economy was likely to remain above historical norms for some time, helping to keep inflation subdued.Reuters

  • What Makes Great Teachers?

Or for that matter, great leaders? Steven Farr visited a large number of teachers to find out:

Right away, certain patterns emerged. First, great teachers tended to set big goals for their students. They were also perpetually looking for ways to improve their effectiveness. For example, when Farr called up teachers who were making remarkable gains and asked to visit their classrooms, he noticed he’d get a similar response from all of them: “They’d say, ‘You’re welcome to come, but I have to warn you—I am in the middle of just blowing up my classroom structure and changing my reading workshop because I think it’s not working as well as it could.’ When you hear that over and over, and you don’t hear that from other teachers, you start to form a hypothesis.” Great teachers, he concluded, constantly reevaluate what they are doing.

Superstar teachers had four other tendencies in common: they avidly recruited students and their families into the process; they maintained focus, ensuring that everything they did contributed to student learning; they planned exhaustively and purposefully—for the next day or the year ahead—by working backward from the desired outcome; and they worked relentlessly, refusing to surrender to the combined menaces of poverty, bureaucracy, and budgetary shortfalls.

    So,

    1. Big goals
    2. Continuous improvement & reinvention; seen another way, relentless self-editing
    3. Alliance building, relationship management
    4. Focus
    5. Planning, using the reverse sequencing method
    6. Grit, determination

    And one more:

But when Farr took his findings to teachers, they wanted more. “They’d say, ‘Yeah, yeah. Give me the concrete actions. What does this mean for a lesson plan?’” So Farr and his colleagues made lists of specific teacher actions that fell under the high-level principles they had identified. For example, one way that great teachers ensure that kids are learning is to frequently check for understanding: Are the kids—all of the kids—following what you are saying? Asking “Does anyone have any questions?” does not work, and it’s a classic rookie mistake. Students are not always the best judges of their own learning.

    1. Good tactics make for good strategy.

  • Spinach and Cheese Lasagna

Yes, you can enjoy the luxury of lasagna again without all of the guilt. Instead of using lasagna noodles I have used wonton wrappers. They make the perfect size individual portions and have much less carbohydrates than pasta and are light and delicious. Cook them like a fresh pasta and you are ready to go. I have added spinach to the ricotta mixture in this recipe but if you are not a fan of this green vegetable you can just omit it. You will have less volume in the ricotta layers but it will be all cheese. Just add a nice little side salad or other vegetable you prefer to balance the dish. So, now you’re asking yourself "Why make lasagna like this?" Well, most lasagna has an average of 35 to 40 grams of net carbohydrates in a serving. My lasagna has only 21 grams of net carbs. Even the ever popular Dreamfields Pasta has 37 grams net carbs in a two ounce serving, which equals two noodles. My recipe reduces the carbs by over 40%, and more when compared to most lasagna. It puts lasagna back within reach of most moderate carbers who include about 20 grams of carbs in their meals. I hope you enjoy.

    Spinach and Cheese Lasagna

    Ingredients:

12 wonton wrappers (if this is your first time make some extras)
1 cup part skim milk ricotta cheese
    1 egg
1 – 10 ounce package frozen spinach, defrosted with all water squeezed out
    2 cloves garlic, minced
    1 tsp. dried basil
    1/2 tsp. dried oregano
    pinch nutmeg
1 1/2 cups Mario Batali Marinara Sauce or other low carb sauce
4 ounces low fat mozzarella cheese
    4 tsp. Parmesan cheese, grated
    salt and pepper to taste
    vegetable spray

    Preheat oven to 400′

While the oven is preheating bring a large pot of water to the boil and drop in half of the wonton wrappers, one at a time. Boil for 1 to 2 minutes and remove with a slotted spoon. Rinse under cold water and lightly coat with vegetable spray to prevent them from sticking together. Place on a piece of parchment paper or waxed paper that has been lightly coated with vegetable spray so they do not touch. Repeat process with remaining wrappers.

Blend the ricotta cheese, spinach, garlic, egg, basil, oregano and nutmeg in a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper if desired.

Lightly coat a large casserole dish with vegetable spray. Arrange four wrapper as the base of each portion, taking care they don’t touch. Top each with about 2 tablespoons of the ricotta mixture and spread with the back of a spoon to cover the wrapper. Top with one ounce of the mozzarella cheese divided between all four portions. Place about 2 tablespoons of marinara sauce on each portion. Add another wonton wrapper and repeat process. Place the final wonton wrapper on top and spoon an additionally 2 tablespoons of sauce on each and divide the remaining 2 ounces of mozzarella cheese between the portions. Sprinkle each with a teaspoon of Parmesan cheese. Bake for about 20 to 30 minutes or until they are bubbly hot and the cheese has melted.

  • Halosource Nails Down $10M for Global Expansion of Water Purifying Technology

    Luke Timmerman wrote:

Halosource, the Bothell, WA-based company with a cheap and simple technology for purifying water in developing countries, has raised another $10 million in a venture financing that could be worth as much as $15 million, Xconomy has learned.

The investment is being led by Prime Partners Asia Merchant Capital of Singapore, according to Halosource’s chief financial officer, James Thompson. The financing, a Series D round, includes existing investors, although a majority of the money is coming from new investors, Thompson says. Halosource has a long list of investors that includes Credit Suisse, Siemens, the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, and a few notable Seattle investors—Alexander Hutton Venture Partners, Buerk Dale Victor, and WRF Capital. The company has now raised about $30 million since 2007.

Roughly 1 billion people around the world lack access to clean drinking water, and this is the root cause of a variety of illnesses that kill an estimated 2.2 million people a year, according to the United Nations. But as more people emerge from poverty, businesses like Halosource have discovered they are demanding consumer products to provide them with clean water. The market is worth an estimated $18 billion worldwide, and growing at a clip of 19 percent annually, according to research firm Frost & Sullivan.

Halosource has been a pioneer in this emerging market over the past couple years, with a product it calls Halopure. The technology is now being used to purify water for about 4 million people in India. That’s about twice as many people as who were using it a year earlier, Thompson says. Halosource is privately held and doesn’t disclose its sales figures, although Thompson said the company recently recorded its first profitable month, and that it is aiming to reach sustainable profitability in the near future. The company has about 100 employees now, and will look to hire a few more with this new shot of cash.

“This is capital that will continue to fuel our growth globally,” Thompson says. “We want to build a great company around a significant need in the marketplace.”

I wrote about a big break Halosource got back in March, when it was certified as safe and effective by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It’s not really that strategically important for Halosource in the U.S., where we take clean water for granted, but it was a key …Next Page »

  • Hands-on with Motorola Backflip

9We spent a few minutes with the just-announce Backflip and, well, it’s a Moto Cliq with weird swivel keyboard. Really, everything about the device feels the same as the Cliq. Even the love-it-or-hate-it MotoBlur interface is still in place. But depending on the price and carrier, it could be a popular product.

The device is different and that’s important these day. The Backflip’s claim to fame is that there is touchpad on the backside of the screen. It allows users to interact with the phone without their fat fingers getting in the way. Controlling the phone this way wasn’t exactly instantly intuitive during our hands-on, but it was certainly.

But the interface is somewhat clunky and laggy just like the Cliq. It doesn’t have the power or the grace of the Droid — or the keyboard or the solid feel or the 5MP camera.

The Backflip isn’t anything that will change the Android landscape like the Droid or Nexus One. It’s just a solid entry-level Android device that tweens and geeks on a budget will probably dig.

  • Ask TUAW: recovering deleted files, encrypted backups, cheap scanning, and more

Welcome back to a new year of Ask TUAW, our weekly troubleshooting Q&A column. This week we’ve got questions about cheap scanners, encrypting backups, recovering deleted files, troubleshooting new hardware, and more.

As always, your suggestions and questions are welcome. Leave your questions for next week in the comments section at the end of this post. When asking a question, please include which machine you’re using and what version of Mac OS X is installed on it (we’ll assume you’re running Snow Leopard on an Intel Mac if you don’t specify), or if it’s an iPhone-related question, which iPhone version and OS version you have.

    FunFred asks

I am looking for a scanner similar to a ScanSnap or NeatReceipts for my dorm. I get a lot of handouts from classes (among other things), and keeping track of them all is a hassle (and makes studying more difficult). However, ScanSnap and NeatReceipts mobile scanners run along the lines of $200… perhaps you know of a cheaper alternative, or a place to get them for less?

It hasn’t been released yet, but there’s been some buzz around the net for the Doxie Scanner at $129. Now you’d have to ask yourself if you could really stand the pink hearts, but it does seem like it might work out for you. That said, I recently picked up a ScanSnap 300M on eBay for $150 and love it (it works great with Evernote), so you might also be able to score one that way.

Is it possible to make an encrypted backup using Time Machine? I am worried that if I make a backup on an external drive and lose the drive (or it gets stolen), all my data will be accessible. I would really like to make use of Time Machine.

Ah, possible is one of those tricky words. I have found a tutorial for creating an encrypted Time Machine sparsebundle, however it’s frankly quite a bit of a hack. My suggestion is a bit different. Do you really need your whole backup (music, videos, etc.) to be encrypted? For most people I would think that there are actually only a few things you’d need encrypted (e.g. financial documents, etc.). In that case, what I would do is create an encrypted disk image to store the sensitive stuff and then just let Time Machine do its normal thing. Keep in mind that any change to the contents of the encrypted disk image means that the whole thing will get backed up again, so don’t make it any bigger than you need it.

If you happen to have a hard drive that does encryption in hardware (like this one), then you don’t need to worry; your Time Machine backups will be uncrackable along with any other data on the drive.

I have an early 2009 Mac mini that I use as my regular computer and and also as an HTPC. I have a 17″ 1280×1024 LCD on my desk connected via a mini-DVI-to-DVI adapter. My 720p (1368×768) TV is connected via a DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter. I am considering getting a bigger monitor for my desk. What would be the maximum resolution I could go that will allow me to continue to use my TV the way I am using it right now?

Another reader helpfully pointed to this Apple Tech Spec for the mini which reveals that the mini “simultaneously supports up to 1920 by 1200 pixels on a DVI or VGA display; up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on a dual-link DVI display using Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter.” In other words, you can pretty much get any monitor you want to replace the 17″ up to and including a huge 30″ dual-link. Now I wouldn’t expect much 3D performance out of it, but it should get the job done for normal usage.

I accidentally delete my video files on my external hard drive, how do I recover these? Running two machines, one with Snow Leopard and the other Leopard. Any solution that’s FREE?

In a case like this the first thing to do is stop using the drive immediately. There is a free command line tool that you could try first: Photorec. It may be a bit tricky to use, but the price is right. Traditionally the go-to application for data recovery on the Mac is Data Rescue III from Tech-Pro ($99). They do have a demo that should at least tell you if it’ll work for you before you buy.

    Steve asks

Santa brought me a new 500GB HDD and 4GB of RAM from OWC for my black MacBook 2.4 running Snow Leopard. I used SuperDuper! to clone the drive and I noticed when I was done the original drive had 224.49GB on it while the new cloned drive had 221.49. I contacted the folks at SuperDuper about the 3GB lose and they said it was normal to loose files so I went ahead and installed the new drive and RAM and it booted just fine but now Safari, iTunes, Handbrake and others crash constantly. I can’t have multiple applications open without crashes. Syncing an iPhone will cause iTunes to crash. I get notices of plug-ins missing like Flash for Safari, etc. I don’t know if the problem is with the HDD, the new RAM (which seems slower than the 2GB I removed) or with the cloned made with SuperDuper!. Any thoughts before I reinstall everything to original and return the gifts?

Here’s what I would do: I doubt it’s the RAM, but it should be easy enough to switch your old RAM back in and see if you’ve still got the problem. If so, what I would do is get a cheap USB to SATA adapter (like this one) and try booting from you old drive to see if you still have the problems (or just get a cheap USB or FireWire case and then you can use the old drive for backups). If the old drive still works as the boot disk, you could try cloning that drive to the new drive one more time, perhaps this time with Carbon Copy Cloner, just to see if it might help.

    George asks

When I got my new MBP 17″ I used Time Machine to move my apps and files over from my old MBP 15″. Since then, I have upgraded to snow leopard, and cut the cords and went all Intel apps, and didn’t install rosetta. This has been fine for months, but all of a sudden, I am getting the message “To open Microsoft Sync Services, you need to install Rosetta. Would you like to install it now?” I don’t know what application/service is prompting me for this, but I would like it to stop!

It’s almost certainly Microsoft Entourage that’s causing the problem. Are you trying to use Office 2004 perhaps? If not, perhaps there’s some crud (technical term) from an older upgrade of Microsoft Office? If that’s the case it might be helpful to re-install Office 2008 to get rid of the problem.

In any event, it’s fine to go ahead and install Rosetta automatically — it won’t slow you down.

I was wondering if there is a program out there for organization that would be a kind of mind mapping meets Spotlight (for documents, images, keywords, whatever) meets Voodoo Pad meets Tinderbox. I would love to be able to jot notes down and have a program organize it based on other information it had in live updating, whether it’s other notes or information I’ve linked to it. Is there anything out there like that? The best would be if it gave it in a visual medium much like a mind map, but linked through multiple bubbles.

It’s not a visual mapper, but I would point you toward DEVONthink Pro. It features some automatic sorting and filing technologies that sound somewhat similar to what you’re trying to do. That said, it doesn’t display these relationships in a visual way like Tinderbox.

I’ll enlist the help of our resident mindmap maven and see if there are any other suggestions to add.

  • General Motors teases GMC Urban Utility Concept

GMC Urban Utility Concept – Click above for high-res image gallery

    “Efficient. Compact. Fashionable.”

That’s how General Motors sums up its teaser of the GMC Urban Utility Concept before it’s official reveal next week at the Detroit Auto Show. Although GM Labs doesn’t divulge much about the concept, the second teaser and few lines from the site provide a clear indication of what GMC is attempting to produce: a Kia Soul, Nissan Cube and Scion xB competitor.

Like its boxy brethren, GMC is pitching the Urban Utility Concept as the mobile home-away-from-home for the modern youth, calling it “a new breed of truck that’s as efficient as it is chic, innovative as it is functional.” The popularity of the aforementioned four-wheeled refrigerator boxes notwithstanding, does a compact trucklet really fit in with GMC’s “Professional Grade” image? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Pandora and Pioneer test drive internet radio in cars

Pioneer AVIC-U220With the auto industry seeing the second straight monthly gain in auto sales, it’s the perfect time for Pioneer Electronics, a manufacturer of car audio systems, and Pandora, the popular web based radio service, to announce a partnership  that could shake up how we listen to music while we’re on the go.

Pioneer will be making a device that will not only automatically detect Pandora settings on either an iPhone or iPod touch and display them on the navigation screen, but also host navigation and other entertainment features.

The device isn’t cheap at $1,200, but Pioneer isn’t worried because it targets some 42 million Pandora users who might be willing to pay for a complete Pandora experience both on and off the web. That large user base is partly why no cash has been exchanged in this deal as Pioneer is now able to reach a large new target market, according to The Wall Street Journal.

This isn’t the first time an internet radio advancement has been unveiled at CES. Last year, Blaupunkt, a car stereo maker, and miRoamer, the web-based radio service, announced the launch of two stereo head units for consumers to play internet radio in their vehicles. Thanks to a plug and play SIM, the device runs on a 3G network similar to a cell phone. There hasn’t been much follow up since the announcement, but both devices are available on the Blaupunkt web site.

  • Saygus Vphone Runs On Android, Claims it Can Make Video Calls Over EDGE [Smartphones]

Wired got a hands on with the mysterious Saygus Vphone, that popped up over at the FCC back in November. They say the Android phone is capable of making video calls—even over EDGE.

Saygus CEO Chad Sayers told Wired that the company developed a proprietary video algorithm for the CDMA handset that allows them to transfer video data at 18-22 frames per second over EDGE and up to 30 fps over 3G. Sayers also said that 10,000 minutes of video conferencing would only take up 5 gigabytes of bandwidth.

As for specs, the Vphone has a 3.5-inch screen, a 624 MHz Marvell processor, and a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and flash. Wired says the phone looks and feels like the droid, but with a better keyboard. And apparently the Vphone is in carrier testing (possibly Verizon?). [Wired]
