  • Klipsch LightSpeakers

Light-Speakers-Controller-AngleThese crazy Klipsch LightSpeakers are designed to add music to any room. You can plug them into standard light cans or even slap them into your Ikea lamp. The ultrabright LED beams through a front diffuser grill and then you can connect the speakers – in left or right channels – wirelessly to any stereo.

    From the press release:

Klipsch to Illuminate Audio Industry with New LightSpeaker
Energy-saving product uniquely combines brilliant LED lighting and wireless ambient sound

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (January 5, 2010) — Klipsch, a leading global speaker manufacturer, has been named the U.S. distributor and licensee of what is possibly the most innovative design to hit the audio industry in recent years. Winner of a 2010 CES Innovations Award, the patented Klipsch® LightSpeaker®, developed by Kadence Designs LLC., is the first product to combine efficient LED lighting and wireless ambient sound into a single unit that installs like a light bulb.

“Today’s consumers are overloaded with complex technologies, and the LightSpeaker is designed to enrich their lives without complication,” said Klipsch president Paul Jacobs. It offers brilliant light, reduces energy costs and creates a multi-room ambient music system in mere minutes. There’s no wiring, no retrofitting and no software to deal with.”

The LightSpeaker, which comes complete with a dimmable LED bulb and full-range speaker, fits 5- and 6-inch recessed light fixtures with a standard Edison socket. Upcoming accessories will allow the LightSpeaker to accommodate hanging light fixtures as well as floor and table lamps.

The speaker uses a 20 watt high-performance, low-distortion digital amplifier to deliver energy efficient sound. Furthermore, the LightSpeaker’s 2.5-inch wide dispersion driver uses digital signal processing to optimize high- and low-frequency output for a full spectrum of sound.

In order to deliver music wirelessly, the LightSpeaker relies on a standalone transmitter. A music source, such as a laptop, iPod or CD player, connects to the transmitter and it wirelessly sends the sound to the LightSpeaker. The transmitter’s 2.4GHz wireless technology accommodates up to eight LightSpeakers, equaling stereo sound in multiple rooms. You can connect two music sources to the transmitter, as well as establish two separate listening zones. The transmitter or remote will control the sources, zones, lighting levels and volume.

The LED bulb is rated for 40,000 hours of use and can last over 15 years. It also reduces daily lighting expenses by 80 percent, using 10 watts to produce light that’s bright enough to replace up to a 65 watt bulb. Unlike incandescent bulbs, the LightSpeaker LED bulb contains no mercury or halogen gases and produces almost no heat.

Ed Haase, president of Kadence Designs and acoustics engineer by trade, led the team responsible for developing the LightSpeaker. “We chose Klipsch to be our U.S. distributor because it’s a name in audio you can trust,” he says. “The brand has been around for over 60 years and finds continuous success because of its commitment to innovation and quality.”

According to Jacobs, Klipsch is completely thrilled about this opportunity. “The LightSpeaker is just an amazing product,” he notes. “It’s also exciting to work with Ed because he’s considered a legend in the custom installation business, having been one of the original co-founders of SpeakerCraft.”

A bundled package, consisting of two LightSpeakers, a transmitter, radio frequency remote, mini jack to RCA plug cable, lenses and trim, retails for $599. Single LightSpeakers are also available for $249 each. Klipsch will begin selling the LightSpeaker on klipsch.com later this month, with broader distribution slated for March.

“A LightSpeaker package eventually pays for itself, through savings on professional installation, separate audio components and energy consumption,” concluded Jacobs. “Plus you can take it with you if you move.”

  • EBook Distributor OverDrive Adds New International Partners

    Asus Ereader

In an effort to expand its customer base outside the U.S., the e-book aggregator OverDrive has signed up some new content partners. The company reports today that it has added 1,700 international booksellers, publishers and libararies to its network – existing partners included Borders.com, BarnesAndNoble.com and WHSmith.co.uk.

But it is unclear whether those numbers actually translate into any kind of financial success. Taking a page from Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN), the company declines to reveal any details on subscriber numbers or revenues from either content partners or consumers.

OverDrive says its partnerships now bring its total catalog up to 400,000 digital books. New online retailers include Australia’s Read Without Paper, Livraria Cultura in Brazil, Txtr in Germany, InfiBeam in Inida, Digitalbok in Norway and Books on Board in the UK. International publishers added to the OverDrive stable include iMinds in Australia, ChineseAll and Penguin Canada.

While it won’t give out numbers for its commercial partners, David Burleigh, the company’s marketing director, tells me that next week it will release some stats around usage of its library service, which now features a selection of books from 10,000 institutions. OverDrive currently works on Windows-based tablets, Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) products, the Sony (NYSE: SNE) Reader, nook and Android devices. Publishers sell ebooks through OverDrive, and the company gets a cut of those sales; it declined to provide details of those revenue-share agreements. It also works with retailers to distribute e-books with them.

  • Welcome to the Age of Robot Reporters

nozzllogo150.jpegOne hour ago, three emergency vehicles responded to a report of an unconscious person at the world headquarters of Nike Inc. in Portland, Oregon. How do I know? An automated form-pumping robot from startup company Nozzl Media told me.

Nozzl Media today unveiled a demonstration of its first product, a widget intended for newspaper websites seeking to display real-time local information derived from Twitter messages, blog posts and automatically extracted public records like restaurant health inspections, building reports and public safety emergency responses. It’s like a little robot reporter and the company plans on offering it as a mobile app in the future as well. Nozzl raises questions, though, about what constitutes news and whether or not human reporters are expendable in the news process.

    Sponsor

    nozzlscreen.jpeg

Nozzl was founded by a team of ex-newspaper reporters and engineers. They got out when it was clear the newspaper industry was in trouble, but now they aim to give something back by bringing together the real-time, programmatic possibilities of the web with the reporting of the newspapers. Reporters have for decades written programming scripts that repeat database queries over and over again to extract public data for bulk analysis. The Nozzl team has taken that to the next level and combined it with new social media.

The company put up a demo page for Portland, Oregon news that anyone can look at today. The public records streams are the big value-add and are fully customizable per newspaper. Visitors can then type live filter terms into the box at the bottom of the widget to zero in on topics of interest to them. That’s the nozzle in Nozzl Media.

User Experience is Hard For Robots

Unfortunately, there are two big issues here. First, the flow of Tweets is overwhelming and undifferentiated. On the demonstration site you see almost nothing else unless you can think of something to filter for. If automated Twitter feeds hold value for local news, they will probably require some smart pre-proccessing before being presented to the reading public.

There have always been people who like to listen to police radio scanners. Myself, I like to read restaurant health inspection reports, building permit applications and liquor license applications. If Nozzl had some categories I could choose between, that would be very helpful.

The second, and more interesting, problem is that the public records that are extracted are exciting in theory but relatively unreadable in practice. The truth is, Nozzl didn’t exactly tell me that there was an unconscious person reported at Nike HQ today – it told me with code from a form that there was an UNCONS/UNRESPONSIVE report at 1 SW Bowerman Drive, in Portland.

A little Mad-Libs style transformation of forms into human-readable sentences and some pre-fetching of names associated with addresses could go a long way. Run the name associated with that address through a News search engine and tell me if its an entity that’s been reported on in the past – if so then it’s probably high-priority news to push live again. The company needs to put these machine-readable pages it displays into coherent English sentences, or find some other solution.

    Don’t Forget the Humans

Ambulances to Nike’s Headquarters to help someone unconscious today? That sounds like it could be news. Even if the technology presented the information this clearly – it may take a human eye to pick this out of a list of automatically captured ambulance reports. Having a human available to pick up a phone, call Nike HQ and ask who was knocked unconscious there this afternoon would add another element of value to this data – but that’s not what Nozzl is looking to do. The company is serving up raw data to news consumers.

In the end, human reporters and raw robot feeds sound like a great combination. That appears to be what Nozzl is aiming to create by offering its widgets to established news organizations. The company says that a mobile application could be in its future, too. That’s something I’m very excited about. Be it a widget or a mobile app, Nozzl’s robot reporters need more polish before they are ready to win back the hearts of fast-leaving newspaper readers. As a picture of the future, though – Nozzl is very inspiring.

  • CradlePoint introduces pair of 4G routers, one for home, one for the road

CradlePoint introduces pair of 4G routers, one for home, one for the roadWe’re in Vegas this week, enjoying the sights and sounds of Sin City — and the 4G wireless. Blistering city-wide wireless is great, but everyone having to have their own USB adapters isn’t so much fun. If only we had one of the new 4G routers that CradlePoint is launching this week. The first, a portable model, can beam WiMAX out again as an 802.11n signal to up to 16 people, sporting VPN, WEP, and WPA security. Should you go out of 4G range (not hard to do) there’s a USB port through which you can connect a 3G modem, and four hours of battery life should get you through the most grande of lattes if you can’t find an open plug at the coffee shop. For the wired lifestyle there’s the CBA750, adding a WAN port and four LAN ports to the mix, ditching the battery, and taking its power exclusively over Ethernet. That’s convenience. The CBA750 is available right now for $249, and we expect the portable version to go for the same price whenever it hits the Strip.

  • Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N700 comfily enters the burgeoning speaker-lapdesk market

This is where we’ve come as a society. No longer are external speakers, pillows or even laptop cooling apparatuses enough to satisfy us. Instead it takes a conglomeration of all three to prop up our hapless “portable” computers as we wallow in our Snuggies and fat free comfort foods. The new Logitech Speaker Lapdesk is one such $80 conglomeration, with two-inch stereo speakers, a built-in fan and a nice bit of padding to keep the whole assembly from frying your lap. It all plugs in over USB, both for audio and for fan power, and there are hardware buttons for switching the fan on and off and changing volume.

We gave it a quick trial run, and can certainly vouch for its comfort and protective qualities, though at the same time we’re not quite sure why it’s so enormous. The speakers are decently loud and clear, and the fan noise wasn’t loud enough to be heard over the general din of the tradeshow, so there’s really not much to complain about if you can stomach the price. But for anything smaller than a 17-inch laptop this is probably overly large for no apparent reason. There’s a quick demo video after the break.

  • “Twilight Eclipse” Script Leaked?

The blogosphere went gaga on Tuesday after an alleged copy of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse script leaked to the Internet. Fan sites went wild as TwiHards gleefully read through pages watermarked with the name Jackson Rathbone — the actor who plays Jasper Hale in the Twilight series. Despite the hype, Summit Entertainment, which produces the Saga, is putting the kibosh on rumors that the script making the rounds is the same one used for the third film in Stephenie Meyer’s smash franchise.

“There is absolutely no merit to this claim,” a rep for the studio told MTV News this evening. “We noticed it over the holiday on multiple message boards and sites, and it appears that some of this was spam.”

Eclipse opens in theaters June 30.

  • Carbon Tariffs on Out-of-State Coal Energy

Via Sallie James of Cato, I came across this story:

Minnesota recently enacted a plan to tax electricity generated by carbon-intensive methods in North Dakota–specifically, a carbon fee of $4 to $34 per ton of CO2 emissions in addition to the normal cost of coal power.

Naturally, North Dakota's utilities are none too happy about this development. The state rightly claims that the tariff will discourage Minnesota from buying power from North Dakota, which produces the majority of its energy from coal. State officials say that the state is working on carbon capture technology as well. And the state isn't taking Minnesota's tariff lying down–North Dakota is suing Minnesota since it believes the tariff, scheduled to go into effect in 2012, is an illegal attempt to regulate out-of-state utilities.

More here.  I'm not sure the lawsuit has actually started yet, but if it goes ahead the dormant commerce clause issues could be a preview of cases to come at the WTO.

  • Yao Ming Wedding Photos, Yao Ming Wedding

“We hope that Yao Ming and Ye Li will go further and raise more pillars of the next generation of Chinese basketball,” it said.

In a Sina.com online poll, 76 percent of more than 29,000 people voting said that Yao’s child was likely to grow taller than 2.05 metres, while 33 percent said the baby would grow taller than 2.20 metres.

Yao and his wife returned to China late last year to do promotional work for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo and to launch the season of the Shanghai Sharks, a professional Chinese basketball club that Yao recently purchased.
The photo below that headline is one of Yao Ming’s wedding pictures. Using the background landscape, the paper’s readers determined that the photo was taken at Qingshan Lake, in Lin’an, Hangzhou.

The photo on the left side is a reader’s snapshot of a small tornado. Perhaps the tornado has some connection to approaching tropical storm Wutip (“butterfly”), as the second headline suggests.
Both Yao and his wife — once a centre on China’s women’s national basketball team — are the offspring of professional athletes. They reportedly married at the request of sports officials in their hometown of Shanghai.

Ever since the 2.29-metre (seven-foot-six-inch) Yao married his 1.90-metre wife in 2007, speculation has run rampant as to when their first baby would be born, popular Internet portal Sina.com said.

As both Yao and his wife were born in the 1980s and are only children, the couple will be allowed to give birth to two children under China’s recently relaxed “one-child” family planning policy, the report said.

Chevrolet Volt Mobile Smartphone App – Click above for high-res image gallery

When the Chevy Volt goes on sale late this year, General Motors intends to leverage its popular OnStar technology to help drivers maximize their electric driving time and minimize their use of liquid fuel. To do that, GM created an OnStar/EV lab last year at its Detroit headquarters. Engineers there have been working on how they can utilize available communications technology to save fuel, and the first public result is a new mobile phone application that is being announced at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show.

When the production version of the Volt was unveiled in 2008, many called the interior very Apple-like because of its smooth white plastic center stack with capacitive touch controls. Thankfully, for those of us who have not fallen prey to the allure of the iPhone, the new mobile phone app is being developed to work on other touch screen phones including the Motorola Droid and Blackberry Storm. Read on after the jump to learn more about what OnStar has created.

  • Apple And Google Just Tag Teamed The U.S. Carriers

afl-v-wwf-tagteamsGoogle’s event today was supposed to be about one device, the Nexus One. Instead, we heard a lot of: “more devices,” more manufacturers,” “more carriers,” “this is just the beginning.” Today was not about one device, it was about Google’s first step in helping to reshape the mobile landscape in the U.S. And thanks to the groundwork laid by Apple, it just might work.

Think about your cellphone and cellular service five years ago. Both were likely horrible. But you were content in your misery, because you didn’t know any better. Then came the iPhone. It was a mobile device that was so good, people were willing to ditch their existing service providers en masse (I did) to go to the only one that had it: AT&T. And while you might think that would be a big plus for AT&T, it actually shifted a massive amount of industry power to Apple. They had the device that everyone wanted. And they used that leverage to renegotiate their exclusive deal with AT&T to pay out a huge amount of money for each device sold.

Sure, there were hot selling mobile devices before it — the Motorola RAZR, for example, was the best selling phone for many years in a row — but the iPhone had two advantages: 1) Thanks to Apple’s complete control over the device, including, maybe most importantly, its software, they created a user experience that the RAZR never could.  2) Thanks to the App Store, there is some amount of lock-in to the device because users are spending a ton of money on apps and if they switch phones, those all go away.

With the iPhone, Apple has created a device that all the other U.S. carriers lust after. And that, in turn, has allowed Google to come along with Android. When the G1 launched a little over a year ago, it was the first of many devices to be heralded as a “iPhone killer.” It wasn’t. But Google didn’t care about that. All that mattered to them at the time was getting their foot in the door of an industry that they, like Apple, had not at all been a part of leading up to that first device. It worked. The carriers were so desperate for an “iPhone killer” that they seemed willing and ready to negotiate with Google to get as many devices out there as possible to ride the Internet-enabled smartphone tsunami that the iPhone earthquake started.

As time went on, and Apple’s exclusivity with AT&T remained intact, Google honed their skills, and improved their software. Their manufacturing partners got better too, culminating in Motorola’s Droid, released late last year. Also not an “iPhone killer,” as I wrote that the time, that device too, was never about that from Google’s perspective (though it was from Verizon’s). It was about continuing to inundate the market with their devices and gain partnerships. With some 20 Android devices now out there, the time was right for what Google did today, which is launch their own agenda to blow up mobile industry as we know it in the U.S.

Now, that may sound a bit extreme, but just look at what Google did today. They launched an unlocked phone that you can buy directly from them. Now, this first device may not have much of an impact because it’s too expensive ($529.00) for its limitations (it will only fully work on T-Mobile in the U.S.), but it’s a first step. More importantly, look at the page pictured below. Is there any question what Google is doing here? They’re taking the traditional mobile model in this country, where you first choose your carrier, and then choose your phone, and turning it upside down. It’s what Apple started with the iPhone. But Google goes farther, because they already have multiple carriers (in this case, T-Mobile and Verizon, coming this Spring).

Screen shot 2010-01-05 at 6.50.37 PM

So why on Earth are the carriers playing ball with this? Well, they really don’t have a choice. Every carrier not named AT&T does not have the iPhone, but wants it. Since they can’t have it (not yet, anyways), they’ll settle for the next best thing, which are now more clearly than ever these Android devices. Google, of course, controls those — and increasingly so, now that they’re dictating hardware specs and features to manufacturers.

And who did Google have on stage today at the event? Two CEOs of two manufacturers: HTC and Motorola. Google has these guys in their pockets because it’s not like their going to team up with Apple to make a device (Motorola tried, and failed). And other partners, like Microsoft, are proving to be less than ideal in an iPhone world. So with the manufacturers on its side, Google has all the leverage it needs over the carriers. And that’s why we’re seeing them fall in line with the new mobile world order. So far, it is just T-Mobile and Verizon in the U.S., but Google alluded to the fact that they’re talking to the other ones as well. That means Sprint and likely even AT&T, for the inevitable day that they do lose the iPhone exclusivity.

It’s not hard to imagine going to a website for a phone one day in the near future and seeing a list of all the carriers. And it will be even less of an issue when CDMA and GSM are replaced by LTE, which will allow for more universal devices. Google set this in motion today. And it’s a model Apple is likely to follow when the iPhone gets to more U.S. carriers. Undoubtedly, the other big players, BlackBerry and maybe even Palm would like to do this too, but they haven’t had either the leverage, or the gall, to stand up to the carriers in this country the way Apple and Google have. Maybe they will in the future. But to the victors go the spoils.

Introducing several new materials and manufacturing techniques, Arbor uses different wood in its boards — namely, bamboo, the most sustainable fiber on the planet. This year, it is changing its designs to use bamboo to board sidewalls — usually made out of fiberglass or polyethylene — promising more ‘pop’ at a low environmental cost.

You might not realize how demanding high-performance snowboards can be when it comes to materials and construction. A top-tier snowboarder needs to be able to go 50 miles per hour and have the ability to launch off a 90-foot cliff. So every little bit counts. What Arbor’s doing right is demonstrating that cheaper, more durable bamboo can be used as an effective substitute for cheaper, rarer woods and petroleum-based plastics.

In 2001, when it first launched its sustainable snowboards, most models used extremely unsustainable woods. When Arbor started using bamboo, many others followed its lead. Four years ago, the Collective went even further, replacing traditionally fiberglass component of its boards, the top sheet, with bamboo. Now others, like Arbor competitor Gnu have tried to emulate its commitment to green boarding.

By laminating bamboo fibers onto the top sheet with epoxies, Arbor estimates it reduce each board’s use of fiberglass and resin by up to 20 percent. Incidentally, the change in material also gives the boards a more responsive feel, with greater spring for long jumps.

Arbor also uses poplar, cork and paulownia woods in its products. All of these are fast growing and require few if any chemical treatments to proliferate. As a coincidence, poplar has also been found to be useful in ethanol production due to its high growth rates.

Arbor doesn’t just make professional-grade boards. It also sells winter sport apparel — and uses bamboo in it too. When it comes to textiles, bamboo has several advantages over cotton. First, it requires very little irrigation and fertilizer to grow thick and healthy. On top of that, cotton usually requires about 5 ounces of chemical additives per T-shirt.

Arbor has also greened its waste management processes. It recycles 100 percent of its office waste, and insists on using non-toxicinks and dies at any point along its supply chain. Now more than a decade old, the company is a positive example for other consumer goods retailers that they can go greener and greener while still turning a profit.

  • Indiana’s incentives pay off, landing Th!nk EV plant

THINK-continues-global-expansion-with-announcement-of-new-U.S.-assembly-facility_largeAfter baiting its hook with a $3 million tax incentives package, Elkahart, Ind. has finally reeled in Th!nk North America’s new electric vehicle manufacturing plant, a facility that represents $43.5 million in local investment and as many as 400 jobs by 2013.

This just goes to show how much states and municipalities are willing to risk to jumpstart their flagging automotive industries by greening them these days. Just look at the bidding war going on between Long Beach and Downey, Calif. to attract Tesla Motors’ new Model S assembly plant, or Michigan’s massive $300 million tax cut for advanced vehicle batter companies. Oregon too is hoping to push through legislation to make it easier for EVs to hit the road in the state. This is a lot to be betting on a business that has yet to launch its biggest products.

And we might found out whether it’s all worth it in 2010. With the launch of General Motors’ Chevy Volt sometime this year, and Fisker Automotive’s Karma, Nissan’s Leaf and Mistubishi’s i-Miev following soon after, we’ll see if the market is as enthusiastic about plug-in vehicles as the government seems to be.

As for Th!nk North America, the joint venture between Norway’s Th!nk Global and American venture firms Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Rockport Capital Partners, Indiana isn’t a shocking choice. Last year, the company announced a battery supply deal with Ener1, which will conveniently be just down the road from its new Elkhart plant. Shipping the heavy and expensive batter packs is a pain, and expensive to boot.

The primary Th!nk car model, called the City, has a plastic body and a driving range of 100 miles. Its biggest caveat? Its top speed still lingers around 62 miles per hour, making it only appropriate for street driving and shorter distances. Still, it’s one of a short list of plug-in vehicles to watch over the next several years.

While the facility will take millions of dollars to renovate and bring online, it should have the ability to churn out about 20,000 cars a year, with the potential to expand. Given that it plans to charge $30,000 per vehicle, the plant could bring in some nice returns. The only thing that’s uncertain now is where Th!nk will get the money to turn the existing Elkhart structure into a humming factory.

So far, Th!nk has made a formal request for stimulus funding through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing program, but its application is still pending. Its competitors, like Tesla and Fisker have received generous sums via the program — $465 million and $528 million, respectively — which have given them a fairly substantial head start. But this doesn’t necessarily spell doom for Th!nk, which plans to sell much more affordable models and for different purposes than both of these companies.

The one hitch: Th!nk isn’t the most financially stable company in the world. The North American venture spun off from its Norwegian parent when the latter went bankrupt in 2008. Still, its cars are on the road in Europe, and it has a waiting list of about 2,300 orders still to fill.

But you would still think that the government would be willing to finance the company’s plant, seeing as how its taken flack from the media and analysts for doling out so much money to Tesla and Fisker, which both essentially build luxury cars out of economic reach of most Americans. The Chevy Volt will certainly beat Th!nk’s cars to market, but it could eventually provide an affordable alternative not made by one of ye olde automakers.
