It seems silly to me to make a non-recycled “green gift bag” but maybe this choice was based on long-life and durability as recycled paper wouldn’t last as long as some other heavyweight bag materials. Still, overall I like the idea this offers kids – pass it on and reuse it rather than simply recycling right away or worse, tossing the bag.

Newton was a very smart man. As he worked on solving the problem of predicting planetary orbits, he saw that his solution wasn’t going to work. To predict and understand planetary orbits requires calculus, and calculus is hard. Not hard as in “I am going to fail math,” but hard as in “No matter what trick I play here, these equations have no solution that I can just write down.” Newton saw this problem pretty early on, and found that given just two bodies (e.g., the Earth and the Moon), he could solve the equations and come up with orbital predictions—add in a third (or more), and solutions just vanished.

As it turns out, this is a pretty general issue in physics. Given two bodies that are interacting, the calculus is generally solvable; once that third body turns up, solutions vanish quicker than a kid’s gratitude to Santa. Thus was born the three-body problem and many, many horrible physics jokes. 

Fast forward to 1970 and a theoretical physicist, called Efimov, who was interested in how nucleons stuck together to form a nucleus. He discovered that under certain very restricted conditions, three nucleons could come together to form a resonant bound state—basically, the three nucleons would stick together. Furthermore, a large number of bound states existed in a series that showed a trait called self-similarity. Further investigation showed that if the particles were neutral and spinless, the number of resonant states would shoot up to infinity. Forty years later, experimentalists have finally caught up with Efimov.

When corporate pranksters The Yes Men staged a December stunt against the Canadian government’s emission proposals, the group had no idea that the resulting backlash would take down more than 4,000 unrelated websites. Whatever you think of the hoax, the saga is a reminder of the power of ISPs and Web hosting companies. If they don’t like what you’re saying and doing, there are often no consequences to shutting down or blocking sites, even when tremendous collateral damage ensues.

The scenario played out in December when The Yes Men and another group called ActionAid staged a hoax aimed at the Canadian government. They put out press releases and launched official-looking websites at domain names with more than a passing similarity to their official counterparts. All of the materials said the same thing: on the eve of the international climate change shindig in Copenhagen, Canada was committing itself to the most aggressive emissions reduction targets of any country. In addition, it was willing to pay developing countries cash to compensate them for dealing with climate change.

Superphone. If you weren’t reading our liveblog of the Google event, it’s the term their Android team kept using to describe the Nexus One. But why?

It bugged us so much that I had to ask for clarification. After all, what kind of person makes up a new term for smartphones and expects other people to use it? I mean, c’mon right? Google’s official answer is that because of the 1GHz processor, the high amount of RAM, the Google apps and all the software innovations they’ve made in the Nexus One, the phone is one step higher than smartphones. And it’s almost equivalent to the laptops you were using four or five years ago. But…really? Superphone?

Because what happens in a few years when these phones are going to have quad-core processors, Xbox 360-level graphics, 4G, and screen resolutions that are on par with what you’re currently using on laptops in 2010. What then? Super super phones? It makes no sense.

The worst bit is that Google is actually serious with this superphone terminology. One of the presenters said something like, “the superphones of today are going to be the smartphones of tomorrow,” which basically implies that superphone is just a high-end smartphone. So, smartphone will be fine. A phone doesn’t cease being a smartphone just because it’s a few years old—but it will cease being a superphone because it’s not top of the line anymore.

Yeah, let’s drop this now and stick with that name that other jerk came up with.
