Beautiful, airy popovers featured largely in many of our holiday meals last month. Every time we made them, however, we couldn’t help wondering just why is it so darn important to keep the oven door closed? Is it to keep an even heat? Because stray air currents could deflate the delicate puffs? Why?!

Samsung’s NX10 camera continues the trend towards DSLR miniaturisation

The rapid evolution of the digital camera will continue unabated at CES this week, with the first announcement being another downsized DSLR system, this one from Samsung. The NX10 is much smaller than a traditional DSLR yet suffers little in comparison, shooting 720p video, running a 14.6 MPX APS-C size CMOS sensor and sporting a whopping 3.0 inch AMOLED screen, allowing users to easily view their images, even in bright sunlight. Most importantly, it’s following the trend begun by Panasonic with the Four Thirds System of DSLRs getting smaller and ridding themselves of fast-moving mirrors and other mechanicals carried over from another era…

US Car Fleet Drops by 4M in 2009
As we reported throughout the year, 2009 was not auspicious for car sales. In the Unites States, however, not only there were fewer buyers, but the entire car fleet lost 14 million units last year. The Earth Policy Institute (EPI) recently announced there will be a teleconference with reporters tomorrow during which it will report that "America’s century-old love affair with the automobile may be coming to an end." In 2009, the 14 million cars scrapped exceeded the 10 m… (read more)

Re-organisation of JRC corporate services

The European Commission has decided a significant reorganisation of the JRC’s horizontal services. Taking effect on 1 January, the reorganisation aims to streamline these services and in doing so, making them more efficient. A clearer separation of centralised and decentralised tasks, in particular in the areas of human resource management and finance, is for example aiming at more efficient and timely recruitment of specialized staff.
Other changes include the creation of a new Unit "Knowledge Management and Evaluation" in the Programmes and Stakeholder Relations Directorate, and the merging of the two former "Work Programme" Units ‘EC’ and ‘Euratom’) into a single one. The detailed organisational chart is available on the JRC website.

Ferrari Fans Will Worship Schumacher Again – Berger
Although most of the Italian tifosi are now very happy with Michael Schumacher signing with rival team Mercedes GP, some F1 pundits believe the German will certainly not be booed during the 2010 Italian Grand Prix, at Monza. Returning to Italy in a silver, rather than red, race suit will certainly not look good in the eyes of the Italian fans, but going as far as booing the man who brought you almost a dozen titles in the last decade is surely out of the question. At least that’s … (read more)

Google Wants to Run the 'White Space' Database
The ‘white space’ promise continues to be enticing to tech companies as much as to the consumers. Several big tech and hardware companies, like Dell, HP, Google and Microsoft, have lobbied for the US government to open up the so-called white space, unused portions of the lower frequency spectrum usually designated to TV broadcast. One requirement before manufacturers can start offering devices using that space is a national database to keep track of the portions of the spectrum already used in every location. This database will be maintained by several private sector administrators. Google has now made its intentions of becoming one of the database administrators official in a submission to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).“In a submission to the FCC, we’re asking the Commission to designate Google as one of potentially several administrators of a white spaces geolocation database,” Richard Whitt, Washington Telecom and Media Counsel at Google wrote.
“Why are we offering to do this? We continue to be big believers in the potential for this spectrum to revolutionize wireless broadband, and we think it’s important for us to step forward and offer our assistance to make that vision a reality… [W]e believe we’re in a strong position to build and successfully manage one,” Google explained it… (read more)

It’s a Wonder (Electric Motor): Chinese Taxis Go Electric
As EV technology and solution manufacturers and providers are gearing up for the battle ahead, the Chinese from Wonder Auto managed to get a head start by signing a deal with the local Liaoning government to provide electric motors for 100 of its taxis. The deal is a first for the Chinese and, according to Wonder Auto, a sign for the "adoption of electronic cars(!)" (their words)."After 5 to 10 years, automobiles will be transformed from fuel powered to electric p… (read more)

Turtle Beach upgrades, iterates USB soundcard line, adds optical output for true 5.1 surround
The USB soundcard race may not be the hottest, but it just got a little warmer just the same. Turtle Beach upgraded its Amigo and Micro external cards to be the — wait for it — Amigo II and Micro II. Both feature a new design that makes them larger than before but extends the device away from your laptop (or whatever you connect it to), giving a bit more flex room to connect your headphones or microphone. That’s all you’ll be connecting to the Amigo II, as it sports a pair of 3.5mm connectors: audio output and microphone input. The Micro II ditches the input, but adds S/PDIF digital optical output (via adapter) so you can get proper 5.1 out of your laptop. Both devices are said to be available soon for a very reasonable $24.95.Turtle Beach upgrades, iterates USB soundcard line, adds optical output for true 5.1 surround originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 05 Jan 2010 03:49:00 EST.
