  • Tallest Building In The World Burj Dubai Opening Today 2010

    The Burj Dubai
Soaring 818 meters (2,684 feet) the Burj Dubai in the United Arab Emirates claims to be the world’s tallest building. But the Burj Dubai is still under construction, and statistics include the skyscraper’s enormous spire.
    The Taipei 101 Tower
Other record-breaking skyscrapers are on the drawing board, but they are too far from completion to enter the running. Among buildings that are fully completed, the world’s tallest appears to be the soaring Taipei 101 Tower in Taipei, Taiwan. The Taipei 101 Tower measures 509 meters (1,670 feet). However, the Tower’s massive 60-foot spire contributes to much of that height.
I decided to Google about the Burj Dubai a little, and i found an interesting interview at Wired with SOM´s structural engineer Bill Baker, telling the story behind the design, the structure and construction. The foundations were overengineered just in case the client wanted to rise the height of the building during construction… which he did!. Now the final height won´t be disclosed until the construction is finished.
Even though the Burj Dubai is still under construction, set to be completed in September 2009, it’s already the world’s tallest manmade structure. As of the end of September 2008, Burj Dubai rose to 2,320 ft (707 m) tall. The exact height is top secret but is estimated to be at least 2,313 ft and 167 floors high. Designed by the firm of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, Burj Dubai features a triple-lobed footprint that was inspired by an abstract rendering of the Hymenocallis, a desert flower native to the area. The structure, which somewhat resembles the Sears Tower, is located in the heart of Dubai’s bustling business district. A hotel will occupy the bottom 37 floors of the building. Floors 45 through 108 will house apartments, and corporate offices will take up the remainder of the building

  • news.com.au Darwin Awards goes to…

    *drum roll*

TWO bank robbers who blew themselves up trying to make a sizable withdrawal from an ATM have been declared the 2009 winners of the Darwin Awards – while the first woman to be nominated came in third.

Organisers say the annual "prize" is given to "those doing the most to improve the human gene pool … by removing themselves from it".

This year the dubious first place went to the pair of bungling thieves in Belgium who wildly overestimated the amount of dynamite they needed to rob a bank.

They both were killed when the blast demolished the entire building the ATM was housed in.

Police only found the body of the second robber some twelve hours after digging through the debris. They had initially assumed he had made a getaway.

The bankrobbers just edged ahead of Florida man Shawn Motero, who was stuck in a traffic jam when nature called.

He got out of his car and jumped over a concrete wall to find a more secluded spot.

Unfortunately, the 30-year-old had not realized he was on a bridge and fell 65ft (19.8m) to his death.

Award organisers said the accident proved you should "look before you leak".

Police revealed Mr Motero had been drinking at a bar in Pompano Beach before his tragic death, adding: ‘He probably thought there was a road, but there wasn’t.’

The first woman to be nominated for the award came in at third place.

Rosanne Tippett drove her moped through a police road block – straight into a flooded river.

After being rescued by police she jumped back into the water to rescue her vehicle – and drowned.

Before embarking on her final journey the 50-year-old had phoned her mother and told her: "My moped has two rubber wheels, Mom, I’ll be fine."

Her mum later admitted: "She loved that thing."

Other nominees for the 2009 awards included an armed robber who used gold spray paint to disguise his face as he raided a convenience store.

The paint released toxic fumes and Thomas James, from South Carolina, collapsed and died shortly after the robbery.

To add insult to injury, the disguise didn’t work – with witnesses having no problem identifying the 23-year-old.

  • Ask Umbra on judging greenness

    by Umbra Fisk

    Send your question to Umbra!

    Q. Dear Umbra,

I consider myself to live simply and in an environmentally conscious way. I have been having trouble with those who also are “green” but seem to be smug about it, ostentatious even, maybe hypocritical when judging others who appear “un-green” based on superficial things like my clothes. How do I stop being judgmental of the judgmental?

    Meghan
    Burlington

    A. Dearest Meghan,

Howsabout we spend less time being shocked by people’s green choices and more time getting good stuff done.I chose your letter to kick off the New Year because I think it reminds us all of an important rule to live by: Judge not, lest ye be considered a self-righteous eco-prig more interested in the appearance of greenness than in making true planetary progress.

Meghan, you have probably noticed that over the last two or three years “green” has taken on a certain trendiness. Celebrities parade about in “think green” T-shirts and electric cars, and stores push us to keep up with the fashions by buying eco-items we surely don’t need. But you must know that there’s a wide spectrum of green in the world, and there’s more to green than all this faddishness. Clothes may make the man, but they don’t make the man (or woman) green.

While your consciousness is apparently not elevated enough for those who are judging you, it is probably far higher than many others will ever achieve. But that is not the point. The very layeredness of your question—how to stop judging the judgers—suggests that we are all in danger of losing sight of the true reason for “being green” in the first place. It is not so that we might win a contest, or parade our virtues about, or be in a position to make snide comments about those who don’t appear to have seen the light. It is so that we might make this planet a healthier, happier place to live.

Far be it from me to judge you for judging. But may I gently suggest that one way to stop being judgmental of the judgmental would be to put your energies into something else instead. Go clean up your local park. Become a Grist Climate Citizen and fight for climate legislation you believe in. Get a home energy audit and take steps to weatherize your house or apartment. Write a letter to a corporation either lauding or lambasting its practices.

We all could stand to spend more time doing this sort of thing in the New Year, and less time playing the “who’s greenest” game. Let’s just agree to live and let vert—and let’s make 2010 a year to remember.

    Bombastically,
    Umbra

  • British National Archives Backs Sale of Friends Reunited to Brightsolid – to Give Ancestry Some Competition

It seems that the staid British National Archives is coming forward in support of the sale of Friends Reunited to Brightsolid. The sale has been somewhat in doubt, as the “Competition Commission” has expressed reluctance to allowing the sale to go through. It’s looks like the principle reason for the support is that the Archives would like to make sure that Ancestry.co.uk has competition. Following is an excerpt from an article in the January 4, 2010 edition of the Financial Times.

    Friends Reunited

The takeover of Friends Reunited, currently facing regulatory scrutiny, has found support from an unlikely quarter – the National Archives.

The government’s official archive rarely, if ever, intervenes in competition inquiries but it has backed the proposed sale of the social networking site operator – and its valuable genealogy subsidiary, Genes Reunited – to create a bigger rival to a larger American competitor. ITV has agreed to sell Friends Reunited to Brightsolid, a web company owned by DC Thomson, the Scottish publisher.

The National Archives said in a submission to the Competition Commission’s investigation into the deal that a combination of Genes Reunited with Brightsolid’s Find My Past site would create “more robust and serious competition” to Ancestry.com, the US-based market leader.

If the merger were blocked, “there is unlikely to be a realistic alternative bid from any existing genealogy company”.

“The reduction in the number of players would weaken the competitive scene, leaving consumers with less choice of product and pricing,” it said.

The National Archives said blocking the merger would also result in consumers having less choice in family history data and documents, and the rate of market innovation would slow.

  • Worst Cooks In America, Worst Cooks In America Food Network

“Watching the Worst Cooks in America struggle to become great cooks, makes a show that is very funny, dramatic and moving,” said Bob Tuschman, Senior Vice President, Programming and Production, Food Network. “Ultimately, it offers hope for even the most kitchen-challenged of our viewers.”

Under the tutelage of Chef Anne and Chef Beau, the recruits are split into two teams. They learn valuable culinary skills from their team leaders, which are then tested in a series of high-pressure challenges. Based on their performances, the recruits will be narrowed down each week until two are left standing to face the final challenge: prepare a three-course, restaurant-quality meal for a panel of food critics that thinks the dishes have been prepared by chefs Anne and Beau. On the line are the chefs’ professional reputations and $25,000 for the newly-crowned kitchen hero. The winner will be revealed during the finale on Monday, February 1st at 9pm ET/PT.
Meanwhile, it’s the opposite end of the spectrum with “Worst Cooks,” which appeals to Average Joes and Janes on a completely different level. The highly entertaining, schadenfreude-filled hour starts with lines wrapped around city blocks as people eagerly try to prove their horrific cooking skills in hopes of landing a spot on the show. The producers and judges select the 24 most abject contestants for the premiere — and, we assume, those with personalities most appropriate for reality TV.

  • User Experience Matters: What Entrepreneurs Can Learn From “Objectified”

Braun's Rams influenced Apple's Ive. Photo courtesy of Gizmodo

A few months ago, my friend Christian Lindholm, partner at Fjord, a convergence design agency, and father of the Series 60 interface (at Nokia) stopped by for one of our quarterly idea sessions. Our conversation eventually veered towards a topic that’s near and dear to both of us: design. I spend an inordinate amount of time contemplating design and its eventual impact on products and companies. Lindholm’s visit coincidentally was a few days before we launched the redesigned GigaOM. I wanted his opinion. Instead he offered great insight. Most companies (including web startups), he said, are looking to “wow” with their products, when in reality what they should be looking for is an “’of course’ reaction from their users.”

Puzzled, I looked at him. And then it hit me: Great design means that one look and the end user reacts by knowing what to do with a knob or a button, without as much as even thinking about it. Of course this knob is what turns the volume up, or brings up the home screen, or in case of our own site design, a hypertext link that brings up posts by Stacey or Liz or me.

This of course factor is at the heart of every great design — from the iPhone to the Braun alarm radio. And it’s an important lesson that every startup and entrepreneur should remember. Whether your company is making a physical product or a web service or mobile application, it’s essential for you to think about design.

This was brought home to me earlier today when I was watching “Objectified,” a documentary film by director Gary Hustwit, who’s well-known for his last film, “Helvetica.” (Both are available for download on the iTunes Store.) Hustwit explores objects around us, how they’re designed, and what they do. It was the best 75 minutes I’ve spent watching a movie, for it not only educated me about design, but it also helped me understand how great designers such as Marc Newson; Dieter Rams, Braun’s former design chief; and Apple’s Jonathan Ive think of and design products.

“In my experience users react positively when things are clear and understandable,” Rams told the Filmmaker. Rams, a veteran designer, is well-known for designing iconic products for Braun. He’s said to have been a major influence on Ive, Apple’s senior VP of Industrial Design.

When talking about the iPhone, Ive told the filmmaker:

When we are designing a product, we look at the various attributes of a product. Some of those attributes are the materials it is made from and the form that is connected to that material. Other issues is physically how do you connect to the product. For example in iPhone, everything defers to the display.

A lot of what we seem to be doing in a product like that is getting design out of the way. With that sort of reason, it feels almost inevitable, almost undesigned and it feels almost, like of course it is that way. Why would it be any other way?

I think this is what Apple’s competitors fail to understand. Many confuse features — aka feeds and speeds — with what really connects with customers: user experiences. (That’s a primary reason why I’m not a fan of Droid, the much ballyhooed Android device. And it’s also the reason why I have growing respect for HTC and what it’s doing with its Sense technology.)

Explaining Apple’s design philosophy behind MacBook Air, Ive told the filmmaker:

We push ourselves to ask, can we do the job of those six parts with just one? One part that provides so much functionality that it enables one product. It wasn’t design of the physical thing, but it was figuring out the process. It is about what’s important and what’s not important.

It is important to remember things that are important and not important and then removing things that are vying for your attention.

Similarly, all features have to have a reason, Ive explained. He gave the example of the indicator light on a MacBook which simply goes away when the laptop is in use.

Indicator has a value when it is indicating. So you spend a lot of time making things less obvious, less conspicuous. When indicator comes on, it is not a feature. It is a calm and considered solution and focus on how you are going to use it.

10 Rules of Good Design by Dieter Rams
    1. Good design should be innovative
    2. Good design should make a product useful
    3. Good design is aesthetic design
    4. Good design will make a product understandable
    5. Good design is honest
    6. Good design is unobtrusive
    7. Good design is long lived
    8. Good design is consistent in every details
    9. Good design should be environmentally friendly
    10. Good design is as little design as possible

But not everyone thinks like that. “What bothers me today is the arbitrariness and thoughtlessness with which many things are produced and brought to market, not only in the sector of consumer goods, but also in architecture and advertising,” Rams said in the film. “We have too many unnecessary things everywhere.” I completely agree. And when the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) kicks off later this week in Las Vegas, we’re going to see a gaudy display of these excesses. The good news is that many of these will never see the light of the day.

Pity the small office when it comes to technology. With anywhere from several to several dozen employees, there’s often no budget for an IT director to manage all the network services required for a modern company of any size. Offices may need to handle email, file-sharing, calendar and contacts hosting, collaboration tools, and other matters.
Especially in this economy, how can an office of that size—perhaps your office?—afford the technician needed to install and keep a Microsoft Server 2008 installation on the rails, plus the initial cost in per-seat licenses. Unix and Linux distributions may be free or have relatively inexpensive purchase and service contracts, but you pay for that in requiring more expertise in house or on demand.

Though the former Cheetah Girl claims the pictures were stolen alongside her laptop but Johnathon Jaxson’s subsequent confession suggested that it was all a plan by him and Bailon. He had stated that the hoax was an effort on part of Bailon to boost up her career and gain popularity. Many agree with Johnathon and believe that it indeed, was an effort to earn repute on international level.

Sources claim that a standard apology from the dancer has been issued addressing her fans to tell them she feels sorry for the leaked photos. However, the other unconfirmed news (so far) is that Bailon is on the ‘hit list’ of the Playboy magazine and even a $100,000 offer is already there if she agrees to expose for them.

  • Freescale reveals 7-inch smartbook reference design, hopes to see it ship for $200

Freescale Semiconductor is helping to kick this year’s CES off with a bang, as its latest reference smartbook design actually has somewhat of a sexy flair to it. Currently, the model is little more than a great idea, but the company is hoping to have it available for partner evaluation starting next month. In theory, at least, this “smartbook tablet” would boast an ultrathin form factor, weigh around 0.8 pounds and get powered by a 1GHz i.MX515 processor. Other specs would include 512MB of DDR2 RAM, a 1,024 x 600 touch panel, 4GB to 64GB of internal storage, a microSD expansion slot, optional 3G WWAN module, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1, GPS, a USB 2.0 socket, audio in / out, 3 megapixel camera, inbuilt 3-axis accelerometer, an ambient light sensor and a 1,900mAh battery. We aren’t quite sure what kind of bulk discounts Freescale is counting on, but it’s hoping that this design will “enable a second generation of smartbook products with prices less than $200.” We dig the ambition and all, but we’re guessing OEMs will actually want to turn a profit should they sign on to sell something like this.

  • Der Teufelstritt (The Devil’s Footprint)

Munich, Germany | Curious Places of Worship

According to legend, in 1468 architect Jorg von Halspach went looking for money to build a new cathedral in Munich and ended up making a bargain with the Devil: the Devil would provide the funds for the huge building on the condition that it be a celebration of darkness, with no windows to let in light.

When the building was complete, von Helpach led the Devil inside to survey his work, and to show him that he had held up his end of the bargain. Although there was light, there seemed to be no windows, and the devil was satisfied. But then when he took another step further, the columns that had been blocking the view of the windows opened up and, in his fury at being tricked, he stamped his foot, forever marking the floor with his black footprint.

The large black footprint is still there, and indeed proudly shown off by the staff of the Frauenkirche as well as eager tour guides. Unfortunately, there are a few problems with the mythological origins.

The first problem is immediately obvious: there is an enormous window at the end of the church which is not blocked by columns. It was hidden behind a huge altar between 1620-1858, so it’s possible that the story cropped up during that time period.

The second problem is with the mark itself – the large footprint is inset into a til which does not match the surrounding floor. The church has been restored several times over the centuries, a huge restoration effort followed the collapse of the roof in WWII, with some work ending just recently in 1994. According to author Joe Nickell, the warden of the church admitted that the footstep now visible is a “reconstruction”, but it is unclear what exactly it is a reconstruction of, or when it first appeared.

  • Bringing Order to the Address Book, Sensobi Targets Underserved Blackberry Mobile App Customers

    Erin Kutz wrote:

You’ve been scrolling through your phone’s address book for minutes now just to find the coworker you call the most. Because his name falls at the end of the alphabet, he’s buried behind dozens of other entries, many of whom you probably haven’t called in years. Shouldn’t a smart phone be smarter about managing your contacts?

Enter Sensobi, a BlackBerry application that organizes your address book by analyzing who you talk to most and alerting you to the people you’re ignoring. Developed by a Cambridge-based startup of the same name—derived from a Zen term signifying simplicity and harmony—Sensobi tracks how many times users have called, texted, or e-mailed a person and assigns varying points to the different forms of communication. Lengthier phone calls score more points than brief chats, too.

“We realized your phone knows more about you than anything else does,” says CEO Ajay Kulkarni, 30, referring to his and co-founder Andy Cheung’s inspiration for using a mobile phone to reconstruct and understand personal and professional relationships.

The people with the most points appear at the top of the Sensobi address book, regardless of alphabetical order. Sensobi links content from text messages and e-mails to contacts’ names, so never again will you be left dumb when your boss asks you on the phone if you’ve seen his most recent message to you. “It helps you save face and facilitates a much richer conversation,” says Kulkarni, a 2008 graduate of MIT’s Sloan School of Management.

It all started when Kulkarni wanted to find a way to make sense of the different business cards and phone numbers he had collected from classes, conferences, and past jobs, which included a stint as a bond analyst at Citigroup and positions at other startup companies. In December 2008, he teamed up with high school friend Cheung, 29, who had been laid off from his job as a developer at Right Media following Yahoo’s acquisition of the online advertising company.

Sensobi's blackberry appThey opted to design their application for RIM’s BlackBerry—the phone Kulkarni says “doesn’t get as much love” from developers as its younger, flashier counterparts. There’s truth to his statement. In November, Apple announced that the iTunes App Store had passed the 100,000-app mark. By contrast, the fledgling BlackBerry App World—launched in April—has just 3,000 offerings.

But Sensobi’s creators saw an opportunity in BlackBerry’s loyal and business-oriented consumer base, a group they’ve targeted through Twitter and tech blogs. “They’re starving for apps,” says Kulkarni. And Sensobi, officially incorporated in January 2009, has helped feed …Next Page »
