  • “The Real World: DC” Ratings Released

    The Real World DC Ratings

Nearly 1.9 million people tuned in for Wednesday night’s season premiere of The Real World: DC, The Washington Post has learned.

The MTV docu-drama wrecked havoc on pedestrian traffic and community relations during filming in Washington’s trendy DuPont Circle neighborhood last summer. Although the highly controversial and oversexed Jersey Shore remains Music Television’s most talked about reality smash of the season, audiences haven’t been this interested in The Real World in ages. Last season’s premiere of the longrunning unscripted soap — now in its 23rd season –only drew 1.4 million viewers, despite being set alongside the steamy backdrop of Cancun, Mexico.

It’s still a far cry from the days when The Real World attracted 4 million viewers per episode.

  • INFRASTRUCTURE – Malatya-Elazig Railway Bridge Transformation

Boğaz Köprüsü’nden uzun(Longer than Bhosphorus Bridge)

Karakaya Baraj Gölü üzerindeki 2 bin 400 metrelik Karabük Köprüsü’ne kara yolu yapılacak. (The 2.400 m long ‘Karabük Railway Bridge’ over the Karakaya Dam Lake will be expanded in use of highway.)

MALATYA – TCDD 5. Bölge Müdür Vekili Mustafa Çalık, Karakaya Baraj Gölü üzerinde bulunan ve 2 bin 400 metre uzunluğu ile Türkiye’nin en uzun tren yolu köprüsü olduğu belirtilen Karabük Köprüsü’ne yapılması planlanan kara yolunun genişliğinin 4,5-6 metRe genişliğinde olmasının öngörüldüğünü belirtti.

Çalık, Elazığ ve Malatya’yı birbirine bağlayan tren yolu köprüsü ”Karabük”ün 1981 yılında ihale edildiğini ve 1986 yılında da ulaşıma açıldığını ifade etti.

Köprünün 1 metresinde 5,5 ton çelik kullanıldığını anımsatan Çalık, önceki yıllarda yanına kara yolu köprüsü inşasının düşünüldüğünü, ancak yüksek maliyet nedeniyle vazgeçildiğini belirtti.

2 bin 400 metre uzunluğu bulunan köprünün Türkiye’deki köprülerin en uzunu olduğunu kaydeden Çalık, planlanan yolun tren raylarının üzerinden geçeceğini belirterek, şu bilgiyi verdi:

    İşte Karabük Köprüsü

”1986 yılında yapımı tamamlanarak tren seferlerine açılan köprünün her metresinde 5,5 ton çelik kullanılmış.

Projenin gerçekleşmesi durumunda köprünün, Türkiye’nin baraj gölü üzerindeki iki katlı köprü olma özelliği kazanacağını ifade eden Çalık, Köprünün alt kısmından trenler, üst kısmından ise kara yolu araçları geçecek (It’s gonna be a two-storey bridge which will have railway below and the highway above) dedi.

  • Audi E-Tron test drive video

The Audi E-Tron test drive by the Los Angeles Times is seen in this video, although it’s unlikely to tell you anything you didn’t already know. We don’t get an idea of what it feels like to actually drive the E-Tron, and the torque figures quoted are likely to be those of the wheels, and not the output shaft, which has created some controversy.

The driver of this test, Dan Neil, gives us some insight into what kind of car the E-Tron is like in his written article. He says:

Like all electric cars, the batteries are the biggest concern. The e-tron uses a lithium-ion pack sourced from Sanyo with a total capacity of 53 kWh, but only about 43 kWh is usable storage. Max discharge is a healthy 230 amps. According to Krauter, the car will have two settings for regenerative braking, one normal and one sporty — which is to say, you lift off the gas and the aggressive regen will instantly slow the car down as if it had piled into a load of sand. No coasting.

For enthusiast drivers, all this is catnip. Torque-vectoring all-wheel drive with big regenerative braking going into corners? That means less weight transfer, better overall balance, less brake wear, quicker time back to the throttle. The production version of this car is going to be stupid fast. I predict we are looking at the future production-car record holder at the Nurburgring.

The suggestion is that Fisker and Tesla look over their shoulders, as Audi is going to take over on electric sports car production. Only just before the electric SLS AMG turns up, that is.

  • Quake ported to the Pre, webOS 3D gaming truly within reach

Yeah, hardware accelerating Doom is an important milestone in any fledgling system’s career, but when you talk 3D acceleration, Quake is certainly a giant leap ahead of Doom in polygonal terms. The game has now been ported to webOS using the same new SDL library from version 1.3.5, and while it looks a little sluggish and crashy in the video after the break, it’s clearly a landmark event just the same. Now if only we could get stuff like this in the App Catalog we’d be perfectly happy forever and ever. Or for at least a week.

  • High Fat, High Sugar Diet Turns On ‘Fat Genes’

Everyone knows that a diet high in sugar and bad fats may lead to obesity. But what they may not know is that an unhealthy Western diet is actually causing obesity on the genetic level. A new study published by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (online at the FASEB Journal) reports that eating a high fat, high sugar diet actually turns on genes that cause the body to store more fat than it needs.

From the press release, “In the research report, scientists show that foods high in fat and sugar stimulate a known opioid receptor, called the kappa opioid receptor, which plays a role in fat metabolism. When this receptor is stimulated, it causes our bodies to hold on to far more fat than our bodies would do otherwise.”

The research was done on two different groups of mice — one group who had had their kappa opioid receptor artificially deactivated and the other group unaltered. Both groups were fed an energy-dense, high-sugar, high-fat diet for 16 weeks. What the researchers found was that, while the mice with the unaltered receptor became obese, those with the altered receptor remained lean.

  • “Poltergeist” Star Zelda Rubinstein Not Near Death

Good news for movie fans: Friends of Poltergeist star Zelda Rubinstein have dismissed reports that the ailing 76-year-old is close to death.

Last week, RadarOnline.com published a report suggesting Rubinstein — who played creepy spirit talker Tangina in Steven Spielberg’s 1982 cult classic — had been taken off life support after spending much of December in intensive care at L.A.’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

The actress was hospitalized after two of her major organs failed, but pals say Zelda’s prognosis for recovery is good.

“She’s OK. Vitals are good. She’s apparently doing better. Internet sources exaggerated the story,” a friend tells MovieHole.net.

  • Artie Lange Hospitalized

Drug-addled comedian Artie Lange has been hospitalized in New Jersey.

Lange — a Howard Stern sidekick with a history of substance abuse issues and DUI arrests — was rushed to a hospital just outside New York City for undisclosed reasons early Saturday.

“I can confirm that Artie is in the hospital. Artie has chosen to keep all information on this matter between him and his doctor. There will be no further comment,” a rep for Lange said over the weekend.

Lange took a leave of absence from Stern’s Sirius-XM radio program in the days leading up to the show’s two-week holiday break last month. He also cancelled several stand-up gigs in recent weeks, including a New Year’s Eve engagement. The Howard Stern Show is scheduled to return live on Monday.

  • Palm’s Native webOS App Secrets Revealed

NativeIf you were a gambling man (or lady), and you were to bet against Palm preparing to announce native game development options for their Linux-based webOS, then your correspondent reckons you would soon be a very broke gambling man (or lady). The discovery of SDL’s inclusion in webOS 1.3.5 really should have been enough evidence for you that something big was brewing, but destinal and Rod Whitby’s (of WebOS Internals) latest discovery is proof positive: webOS 1.3.5 also includes a method for launching native Linux applications without any of the Upstart hackery we reported on yesterday.

How’s it done? Rather simply, actually. All a developer needs to do is install the application’s files and include a webOS-standard appinfo.json file, which tells webOS everything about a particular app. By setting the type to “game” and pointing to a binary executable (rather than the usual index.html a typical webOS app is based around) webOS 1.3.5 will happily throw your new native, SDL-based Linux program into a card, ready to do your bidding.

So there you have it. Fully-integrated native apps on webOS are a go – and within seven months of launch, we might add. (For the record, the iPhone took a year to get there and Android nearly two.) Need For Speed on the Pre doesn’t seem quite so far-fetched anymore, now does it?

  • Making Fat: How to Render Lard

how to render lard: freshly rendered lard

Rendering lard is a lost art – a worthwhile technique forgotten in a fat-phobic, Lean Cuisine-centered culture.  Many cooks, seeking out local foods and forgotten traditions, have rediscovered how to render lard in their homes. Learning how to render lard needn’t be a difficult task; it requires clean fat, clean water, a good stock pot and a quiet afternoon in the kitchen.  The reward of a beautiful, creamy white jar full of freshly rendered, pastured lard is worth the minimal effort.

Pastured lard is a remarkably good source of vitamin D and of monounsaturated fat – the same fatty acid found in olive oil and avocado that is heralded for its benefits to cardiovascular health.  Odd that lard, given its fatty acid profile and vitamin content, earned such a bad rap over the last few decades.  Like many wholesome, nourishing fats, lard seems to have been swept aside for a time, but it’s quickly earning a much-deserved renaissance – ensuring that taking the time to learn how to render lard is worth your effort both in terms of its redeeming nutritional value as well as in celebration of the wealth and variety of your local foodshed.  Hogs, and their nutrient-dense fat, are widely available.

how to render lard: cube lard first

How to Render Lard on the Stove top

I prefer to render lard on the stove top, so if you’re learning how to render lard from this method, take care to ensure you have a high-quality, heavy bottomed stock pot.  Two and one-half pounds of fresh leaf lard or hog fat will produce approximately one-half gallon of creamy, nutrient-dense fat.  For more step-by-step images, check out the photostream on flickr.

    Ingredients for Rendering Lard

    • 2 ½ pounds of pastured leaf lard or hog fat
    • ½ cup filtered water

    Stovetop Method for Rendering Lard

    1. With a sharp knife, trim any blood spots or remaining meat from the lard.
    2. Chop the fat into ½-inch cubes.
    3. Add the chopped fat and the filtered water to a heavy bottomed stock pot and simmer over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally.
    4. After about 45 minutes to one hour, the water will evaporate, the fat will begin to melt and the cracklings – little bits of browned fat – will begin to float to the surface of the pot.  Continue to gently stir the melted fat periodically, taking care not to let it splatter.
    5. Eventually those cracklings will sink to the bottom of the stock pot, at that point you may remove your pot from the heat.
    6. Line a fine mesh sieve with a 100% cotton cheesecloth and strain the melted fat, reserving the cracklings for another use (they’re quite nice salted and eaten as a snack or served in place of breadcrumbs in a gratin).
    7. Pour the melted fat into mason jars and allow to cool.  The melted fat will be golden-brown in color, but, when cooled, will appear a creamy white.
    8. Use your freshly rendered lard in pastries or as a fat for braising vegetables or seasoning meats.
