Tebow’s eye black says “EPH 2:8-10,” a reference to the Epistle to the Ephesians. Ephesians 2:8-10 says:

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
It seems evident to me that the existing five solas bypass a couple of other important principles taught by Jesus and the writers of the NT. The reason why these principles were ignored by the reformers also seems evident; they were not helpful in their goal of condemning the Roman Church. I think it likely that, in their need to protest the RCC errors (which they did need to do), many of the reformers became somewhat theologically unbalanced.

In this article, I propose adding two solas to the five-to make seven. These two additional elements of the salvation process are clearly present in the scriptures and in the Church’s 2000+ years of experience. I expect radical Calvinists to protest the article in force, but more moderate Reformers and those who lean toward the AngloCatholic side will appreciate it.

On the Order of the Seven Solas The seven solas will be presented in a particular order which has theological (i.e., soteriological) significance, describing the salvation process as it applies to the individual. For our purposes here, the solas are presented in a linear, time-related order. What comes first? We will start with what is divine and pre-existent and move into what believers actually experience in their individual journeys of faith. While each sola is interconnected to each of the others, yet there is sense of movement to the process which eventually comes full circle; the final sola points back to the first. I visualize them as a wheel divided into seven colors, with each color blending into the next as you go around the wheel. I start with the pre-existent glory of God. Please be patient and do not jump ahead, because each sola builds and prepares for those that follow.

    1. Soli Deo gloria (“glory to God alone”) – This is the entire reason for everything, including the salvation of individuals. God is full of glory and anything that He does only increases that glory.

Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God. How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out. 34″Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?” 35″Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him?” 36For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever. Amen. (Romans 11:33-36)

To get a glimpse of the mind of God regarding His purposes in creation and salvation, we need go no further than the words of Jesus in John 17:22-24: “I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24″Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.” Note for later reference that this passage links the concept of glory with the concept of unity in love, since that is God’s essential characteristic.

  • Lady Antebellum

2009 has been a red letter year for both Lady A and Swift, whose chart success led to various significant awards. Lady Antebellum enjoyed back-to-back chart toppers with “I Need You Now” and “Run to You.” The trio later raked in CMA Awards for the best vocal group and single of the year.
‘American Honey’ is the second single off Lady Antebellum’s sophomore album ‘Need You Now,’ dropping Jan. 26. The song taps into childhood memories, reminiscing on “oh nothings sweeter than summertime” where “church bells ring and strong love grows.” With their signature harmonies and a soft, yielding mid-tempo, the song is sure to take fans back to a simplistic yet sweet past. To hear the new single ‘American Honey,’ go to AOL Radio’s New Country First station.

  • 2010: My Fifth Annual List Of The Tech Products I Love And Use Every Day

It’s time for my annual list of technology products that I love and use every day. This is the (wow) fifth year I’ve done this. Here are my previous lists: 2009, 2008, 2007 and 2006. The scope of the list has changed over time. In 2006 it was just about websites. Now the list includes other web services, some desktop software and even a few gadgets.

These aren’t necessarily newly launched products (see Daniel Raffel’s post yesterday for a solid list of great new products). This is a simple list of the tech products that are an integral part of my day – work or play. Some have withstood the test of time and I just can’t live without. Others are newcomers that have captured my imagination.

I use most of them every day, or nearly every day, and I would not be as productive or happy without all of them. There are now 24 products on the list.

Just three of these products have been on the list all five years: TechMeme, Skype and WordPress. As I said last year, TechMeme continues to be the news aggregator I check multiple times per day to keep up on tech news (although Google News is becoming more important over time). Skype is the instant messaging and VoIP platform that I use most often at work and with friends. And WordPress software powers all of our blogs.

I’ve added 13 new products to last year’s list: Android, Apple Magic Mouse, Dropbox, Evernote, Foursquare/Loopt/Gowalla, Google Docs, Google Voice, Kodak Zi8, MOG, Skitch and Spotify.

I’ve removed seven products from the 2009 list: 1-800-Free-411, Digg, Friendfeed, Google Reader, iPhone, MySpace Music and Zoho.

There are lot of products that I use daily that aren’t on the list for various reasons. My iMac and MacBook Pro and Droid phone, for example, aren’t on the list specifically even though all three products are exceptional. I don’t really have a browser preference, although I suspect Chrome will be on the list next year. And there are lots of websites and services, like Posterous and Amie Street, that I use regularly but just didn’t make my arbitrary cut. We also use Bit.ly extensively on the site for URL shortening, and EventBrite and Amiando for event ticketing.

Here’s my 2010 list of tech products that I love and use every day:

    Android

I gave up the iPhone this year and switched to Android mobile phones. First the MyTouch, then the Droid. I’ll soon be upgrading again. What I like best about Android is the deep integration with Google Voice, which I talk about below. These two products go hand in hand.

    Animoto

I first put Animoto on the list last year. The service makes beautiful slide shows of photos, and this year they added videos (here’s one I made). Their iPhone application continues to impress. This company is now profitable and my guess is someone like Apple will acquire them in the next year.

    Apple Magic Mouse

The Apple Magic Mouse is the best computer pointing device ever made. It functions as a normal mouse but also has multitouch on top. Once you use it you’ll never be happy with an old mouse or touchpad again.

    Delicious

Delicious, the social bookmarking workhorse, has been on my list every year except 2007. It’s not perfect but it’s better than anything else out there.

    Dropbox

Dropbox is a new addition to the list this year. It’s just dead simple file syncing across all your computers, mobile devices and the cloud. It’s also a great way to privately share big files. Dropbox is now one of my must-have productivity tools. I just wish Google offered something similar so that I could have an integrated dashboard for my Google Docs files and Dropbox stuff.

    Evernote

Evernote is also a new addition this year. Like Dropbox it is an amazing productivity tool that lets you capture, organize, and find information across multiple platforms. You can take notes, clip webpages, snap photos using their mobile phones, create to-dos, and record audio. All data is synchronized with the Evernote web service and made available to clients on Windows, Mac, Web, and mobile devices. Additionally, the Evernote web service performs image recognition on all incoming notes, making printed or handwritten text found within images searchable.

    Facebook

This is the third year in a row that Facebook has been on the list. Facebook has won the social wars, and even the biggest companies are now surrendering to them. Facebook Connect is turning into the defacto online identity solution for tens of millions of people.

    Foursquare, Loopt and Gowalla

These three startups (Foursquare, Loopt and Gowalla), among others, are battling to control mobile social networking. They all have variations of the check-in model, where users are encouraged to note where they are for their friends to see. Foursquare has all the early adopter momentum, But Loopt has millions of users and Gowalla has a compelling product. All three are likely to win.

    Gmail

This is the fourth year in a row for Gmail. It’s the best webmail out there, and I appreciate the free imap support and forwarding. Enough said.

    Google Docs

This is a new addition for me this year. I never bothered installing Office on my new laptop, and find that Google Docs has all the functionality I need, plus easy sharing with others and storage in the cloud. I may never install Office again. I previously had Zoho on the list, a competitor, and removed it only because I find that centralizing as many services as possible at Google makes things easier for me as a user.

    Google Voice

This has been a big year for Google Voice, previously called Grand Central. The mobile apps let Google Voice completely take over Android phones. I’ve ported my mobile number to Google Voice and now any time someone calls that number I can direct it to any phone I like based on where I am, who’s calling and when. It has changed my life, and I will never use a mobile phone that doesn’t have deep integration with the service.

    Hulu

This is the second year in a row for Hulu. I’d love for them to add a paid model and let me watch HBO shows or pay per view new release movies. And I wish they could secure rights to archived libraries of shows, but even as it currently exists, Hulu is a great entertainment service.

    Kodak Zi8

This digital video camera beats the pants off the current Flip models. The best feature is the ability to add a microphone. Flip doesn’t have this, and the audio quality is often terrible. The Zi8 is a full generation ahead.

    MOG, Pandora and Spotify

MOG and Spotify are new this year. Pandora has been on every year except 2008, and with hindsight I should have added them that year, too. These are three streaming music services that are awesome. MOG, which is $5/month, is the best music experience on the Internet. Spotify, a desktop streaming service that hasn’t launched in the U.S. yet, lacks the radio and social features of MOG but is currently free. And we hear it will launch on a limited basis in the U.S. very shortly. Pandora is still a very cool place to just sign in and listen to music that I love quickly and easily.

    Scribd and Docstoc

Scribd and Docstoc, two services that let you upload office files like PDFs and Word documents and then embed them on sites, are very useful to bloggers like us. When we have a document that we want to share with readers, we use one of these services and embed it into the post. Both services were also on the list last year.

    Skitch

I’ve been using Skitch for years. It’s Mac software that makes basic image manipulation a breeze – sort of a very light version of Photoshop. For 90% of our images, Skitch works just fine. It’s easy to add text, resize and crop images, etc. And it automatically uploads them to the website for you, too.

    Skype

Skype is on the list every year and will probably stay there, even under new management. I’d give up email before I gave up Skype. I use it almost exclusively for instant messaging, and a big percentage of my voice calls are over the service. I love doing video chat with friends oversees, too.

    TechMeme

TechMeme is another service that has been on the list all five years. It is the definitely news aggregator for technology news, and a huge asset to our community.

    TripIt

TripIt is a simple travel service that is absolutely awesome, and returns to the list this year. You forward confirmation emails from flights, hotels, etc. to the service and it creates an itinerary automatically. You can then access it via a mobile device.

    Twitter

Twitter is fast becoming as essential marketing tool for TechCrunch, and I’m addicted to it personally. This is the third year I’ve added Twitter. For mobile use, I love the Seesmic Android application.

    WordPress

All our blogs run on WordPress’ open source software, and we use other services of the company, Automattic, that runs the project (Akismet for spam, polldaddy for polls). It has been on the list all five years, and we are thankful for such cool, and free, software.

    Yammer

Yammer, a Twitter-like service for companies to use internally, won TechCrunch50 in 2008 and is an essential productivity tool at TechCrunch. We long ago moved to the paid version of the service, and we’ve never looked back.

    YouTube

This is the fourth year in a row for YouTube. It’s always good for a two minute entertainment diversion from work, and we use it exclusively to host our own video content.

Let me know what services you’d add to your list, or leave off. Each year in the comments I hear about someone’s passion for a new product that I overlooked before, and sometimes they make the list in the following year.

  • Namebench: Google’s 20% Project To Find The Fastest DNS Server

Screen shot 2010-01-01 at 6.26.30 PMWhen Google launched its own DNS service last month, one of the main stated goals behind the project was speed. The problem is that most Internet users have no idea what a DNS server is, let alone how to configure one, or test how fast it is. But one Googler has taken it upon himself to create an easy tool for testing DNS and recommending what you use with his 20% time.

Thomas Stromberg, a Google engineer based in Belgium, created Namebench, a piece of software to find the fastest DNS server available for you to use. The program is available for OS X, Windows, and Linux, and the entire thing has been open sourced by Stromberg.

Once you install it, Namebench couldn’t be easier to use. You simply load it up, hit the “Start Benchmark” button and let it do its thing. Depending on the number of test you run (you can set that), it will come back with the results in a few minutes. The results open in your web browser, showing you the first, second, and third best DNS options right up top. There are also a number of charts and and graphs if you want to drill down into the numbers.

Now, you might worry that since Namebench was created by a Googler, it would promote Google Public DNS above all others. But actually, in the test I just ran, Google’s solution ranged from the middle of all the DNS offerings to the slowest. OpenDNS, considered Google Public DNS’ biggest competitor, was actually the fastest.

Are you a power-user with 5 minutes to spare? Do you want a faster internet experience?,” is the way Stromberg pitches it on the site for project. If that applies to you, you should check it out. Stromberg wrote more about the idea a few months ago before Google Public DNS was a reality.

  • Alcohol with Metformin/Glucophage

You know — I think all of us read on our Metformin prescription bottle ‘DO NOT USE ALCOHOL WHILE ON THIS MEDICATION’.

And yet I know several of us use wine to help AM blood sugar levels if we have Dawn Phenomenon. Or we simply enjoy it in moderation.

What is the real deal with alcohol and Metformin?

Do some of you follow the label strictly? – and therefore you’ve decided NOT A DROP FOR ME!

Has anybody ever had any trouble having some alcohol in moderation while on Met?

What is taking alcohol with Met/Glucophage supposed to increase the risk for such that they’d post such a warning on the label?

    Thanks!

  • EFF Helps Blogger Subpoenaed by TSA, TSA Backs Down

On December 31, 2009, the Transportation Security Administration backed off on an ill-considered administrative subpoena it issued to trasportation industry blogger, Christopher Elliott. EFF assisted Mr. Elliott in responding to the subpoena.

The subpoena was hand-delivered to Mr. Elliott by a TSA representative on the evening of December 29, 2009. It sought all documents “concerning your receipt of TSA Security Directive 1544-09-06 dated December 25, 2009.” The much-criticized directive had been given to hundreds of employees of TSA and the airlines and described some of the passenger-related security measures put into place in the immediate aftermath of the unsuccessful attempted bombing of a Northwest Airlines flight on December 25, 2009. The directive expired on December 30, 2009. Mr. Elliott obtained it in the course of his coverage of the situation and had sought TSA comment before publishing. The subpoena demanded all documents by the close of business on December 31, 2009, just two days after the agent delivered it.

Mr. Elliott’s counsel Anthony Elia, assisted by EFF and others, responded to TSA by objecting to the subpoena both on the grounds that it did not provide a reasonable time for Mr. Elliott to respond and because it improperly sought to require a journalist to reveal his sources and materials. Upon receipt of the objection, TSA first granted an extension to Mr. Elliott, then withdrew the subpoena entirely.

TSA also withdrew a similar subpoena it had issued to blogger Steve Frischling, but reportedly not until after the agents improperly threatened Mr. Frischling’s job and pressured him into giving them his computer, which they then apparently damaged. The facts of what occurred to Mr. Fischling are deeply troubling.

TSA should have known better than to use its civil administrative subpoena power to try to force these reporters to divulge their sources. This incident reinforces the need for a federal reporter shield law that fully embraces the new era of blogs, tweets and other nontraditional journalism tools. Nonetheless, we’re pleased that cooler heads prevailed at TSA this time.

  • Lactic Acidosis

Have any of you actually experienced Lactic Acidosis from the Metformin? Or from any other source for that matter?

It seems the main effect it has on the body is depleted electrolyte levels.. If that’s really the main ‘down side’, symptoms being weakness and nausea — would it be as simple as getting a quart of Gatorade to correct the inbalance?

    Thanks,

  • All You Need for the New Year Is Love and This Uplifting Video [Music]

Remember the extremely popular and heart-touching Stand By Me video? That was recorded in a virtual studio around the world during different days. Here’s the not-less-heart-touching All You Need Is Love, recorded in 156 countries at exactly the same time:

The video was made on December 7, 2009 at 1:30pm Greenwich Meridian Time. All the different musicians in 156 locations started to sing the song at that time, with the same tempo. They did a good job: When the results were assembled in a single track, everything matched.

The event was organized by Starbucks to help raise awareness of AIDS in Africa for the (RED) foundation. Like the Stand By Me video, the result will touch even the more-coldester-hearted bastards among you. And if it doesn’t, you need a punch in the bracket.

Another happy way to start 2010. Pass the link along. [Starbucks Love Project]

  • How to Destress

In order to learn how to destress we must know what stress is.

What is stress?  There are three elements of stress and they include a stressor, a reaction to the stressor, and then the stress response.

A stressor can be a person, thing, situation, or activity that may cause an individual to develop stress.  For example, death, dying, divorce, or devastation.  Some other stressors may consist of work, school, a relationship, bills, weight, health, or the economy.

When we experience a stressor we react and our reactions include our thoughts, feelings, and actions which in turn triggers the stress response.  The stress response is the well known fight or flight response.

The foundation of our reaction, that causes the fight or flight response, begins with a thought that we may not be able to handle this particular stressor.  After every thought comes a feeling.  If we think that we will not be able to handle this particular stressor, we will feel doubt, fear, worry, or maybe even anxiety.  These thoughts, feelings, and the actions that follow, trigger the fight or flight, aka the stress, response.

When the stress response is initiated, results from the stress follow.  The results may be emotional, mental, physical, or spiritual.

So, back to “How to Destress.”  Now that we know what stress is we can easily learn How to Destress.

To truly destress yourself is to discover how to react to stressors with more confidence, faith, and hope.  Remember the thought that we may not be able to handle this stressor?  Well, we must look at the situation and ask ourselves, “if the worst were to happen, could I handle it?”  The answer?  A resounding “YES!”

No matter what happens, you can handle it.  Learn to react with this thought, no matter what the stressor is, and you will learn How to Destress.

  • Gilbert Arenas Pulls Gun

Rabin died the first week of November 1995 after being shot. His assassin was a young Jewish man tied to right-wing extremist groups. The murder took place at a peace rally in Tel Aviv’s Kings Square.

“I stood in the spot…Rabin was killed,” Pollin told The New York Times sports columnist George Vecsey upon returning from Rabin’s funeral. “Bullets connote killing, violence, death. Our slogan used to be, ‘Faster than a speeding bullet.’ That is no longer appropriate.”

Pollin announced then that he was removing his team’s long-time nickname and would ask the team’s fans for a nickname that wasn’t offensive by conjuring such painful memories. (It is too bad those who’ve owned Washington’s NFL franchise haven’t been moved to do the same thing.)

Arenas in recent days has all but spat on Pollin’s grave.

Arenas is under investigation by the D.C. police department about his storing of guns at the Verizon Center. The District has strict laws that prohibit carrying guns openly or concealed. The league is also looking into the situation. Now there is a report that he actually brandished a gun against a teammate in a dispute over a bet.

This isn’t about the hip-hop culture, of which Arenas is a part. That’s an old canard that dismisses the fact that hip-hop artists have sung about the self-destructive nature of violence and rapped about the manliness of walking away from conflict as A Tribe Called Quest reminded with the lyrics “You’re not any less of a man if you don’t pull the trigger, you’re not necessarily a man if you do.”

  • Predictions for 2010?

2010… a year we’ve been waiting for since at least the mid-80’s. It’s finally here guys — so what happens next? Every year we take the 1st of January to try and figure that out. Normally we would consult the sage-like wisdom of Engadgetdamus, but this year is special, and we thought it needed the kind of time-twisting-artificial-intelligence-color-cycling-weird-baby-monolith-Roy-Scheider-starring-space-adventure that only the the above image (and book, and movie) could evoke. Below are the predictions from the staff of ye olde Engadget — what say you, good reader?

Chris: In an unprecedented cash and stock deal valued at over $1.7 billion, Comcast acquires your ‘89 Festiva.
Thomas: Steve Jobs will announce a pair of tablets, then smash them to bits on account of Android idolatry.
Laura: Jeff Bezos will continue to predict the “death of the book.” The book will continue to exist merely to spite Bezos.
Don: The world breathes a sigh of relief that the Large Hadron Collider will never create a black hole… after it is destroyed by zombies.
Dan: Apple’s stock will plummet when a TUAW investigative report reveals that Steve Jobs actually died in 2002, and has since been portrayed by talk show host cum surreal performance artist, Arsenio Hall.
Nilay: Google finally flips the switch and creates Skynet.
Ben: Microsoft agrees that CableCARD is a failure and Media Center along with it and introduces Zune Center.
Josh F: Adult entertainment will kick-start yet another media market, this time in the form of 3D Blu-ray porn.
Richard Lai: Tamagotchi resurrects with 3D monochrome screen, and then dies.
Darren: Intel considers making an Atom that’s actually fast, but its bottom line delays the launch until December 31, 2012.
Vlad: Sony Ericsson delivers an Xperia handset on time… nah, just kidding.
Richard Lawler: Nintendo surprises everyone and releases the Wii 3D.
Josh T: Google upends the landscape of the mobile phone market when Eric Schmidt says Apple can “have one of these unsubsidized” while emphatically pointing to his crotch.
