  • NZ Methane Hydrates May “Soon Be Developed”

Rigzone has an article about high hopes for a methane hydrates development offshore from New Zealand (in an area where a wind farm would probably achieve as high a utilisation rate as you’d find anywhere in the world, I’d note) – NZ Methane Hydrates May Soon Be Developed.

A gas industry using frozen gas hydrates below the seabed off the East Coast could be developed in the near future thanks to rapid global technical developments.

George Hooper, executive director of the Centre for Advanced Engineering, told a recent Oil and Gas conference in Wellington that exploitation of methane hydrates could transform New Zealand’s energy market.

Hooper is lead author in a recent CAE report on an options analysis for commercial development of energy from offshore methane hydrates in New Zealand.

He said ‘sweet spots’ containing high concentrations (about 4-10%) of methane hydrate found in sheets under the seabed off the East Coast may contain about 8.5 – 21 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of recoverable gas.

He said New Zealand’s methane hydrates endowment is very likely the largest in the world on a per capita basis and potentially one of the largest resources in the world.

Inferred resources of hydrates in New Zealand are 813 TCF with 40 TCF identified as potentially economically recoverable. Inferred world resources of hydrates are 20,000 TCF.

The ice-like crystals of water and methane molecules intermixed with sediments are found over 50,000 sq km from offshore Marlborough to offshore Gisborne, as well as off Fiordland.

A number of countries were now working on developing commercial gas production from hydrates including Japan, India, the US and South Korea. Japan was talking of a 2015 timeline for first production, though this might be optimistic, Hooper said.

He anticipates rapid progress in the engineering geology and production technologies required for hydrates extraction, both internationally and in New Zealand.

This demanded a considerable ramp-up of hydrate research and development effort here to ensure New Zealand has the earliest possible opportunity to develop its hydrate resources and associated skills.

A conceptual well development plan for a known Wairarapa hydrates ‘sweet spot’ site offshore Wairarapa, east of Wellington, was prepared for the study.

Costings for a small scale 10 petajoule a year ‘proving’ project indicated this option would require capital expenditure of $370 million.

To produce 150 PJ of gas, equal to the entire New Zealand gas market, the capital expenditure would be about $4 billion, about twice the $2 billion capital spending required to produce a similar volume of conventional natural gas.

The cost of building a 300 PJ project both for domestic gas use and for the export of LNG, would cost about $8 billion.

  • You Could Not Make It Up: Gather: The Well Disarmed Skeptic – How Climate Change Denialists Use Front Groups to Lie About the Science

Article Tags: Comment, You could not make it up

Climate denialists like to argue that they are “well armed” to deny the overwhelming scientific consensus on climate change. And in some respects they are, because these non-science free market lobbying groups have a long history of setting up fake front organizations and now blogger networks to saturate the public domain with intentional misinformation. They did it to deny that smoking caused cancer, that CFCs affected the ozone hole, that smokestacks in Ohio caused acid rain in New England, and that killer smogs were the result of pollution. In all cases the denialists were wrong, the scientists were right, and policy-makers finally made decisions that helped to fix the problems. In fact, some of the current climate change denialists are the very same people and lobbying groups that denied the earlier science.

Some of the recent articles here on Gather have suggested the following as sources of denialist misinformation. Too bad they aren’t scientific at all…..

Click source to read FULL article from GATHER……..these are strange times, the supporters of AGW are in freefall and this article shows how desperate things have become. It’s a shame that we are unable to leave a comment on this article, maybe they would like to leave a comment on our site to support their views. The FACT is AGW is a FAILED science and those who should know better are staying to the end to produce this kind of rubbish!

  • iToos M6HD PMP outputs 1080i without breaking anyone’s bank

There’s really only two things you need to know about the iToos M6HD PMP, and at the risk of repeating the headline: it can output 1080i via HDMI and its price is pretty hard to argue with. As for the fine print, we’re looking at a 4.3-inch TFT screen with 1360 x 768 resolution, 4GB internal memory upgradeable via memory card, and the usual variety of codecs you’ve come to expect from Asian PMPs, including FLAC audio and H.264 video. According to Akihabara News, it technically retails for only $58.50, but for the moment the best we’ve is online retailer Ownta for pocket change under $87.

  • Six Contentious Animal Culls in the News in December are Small Compared to the USA’s “Herd Retirement Program”

Antarctic Fur SealThe Fur Seal – victim of possibly the most emotive culling.

A recent post on the culling of rabbits on Robin Island, prompted a quick look at news items on culling over the last month. This revealed a variety of motivations for culling, very different numbers culled and a range in the opposition to the culls. The culling of a quarter of a million dairy cows in an attempt to raise milk prices with almost no protest is the outlier in the group.

The Dutch government is culling 40,000 goats and sheep this month in an attempt to limit the spread of Q fever, an animal-borne disease that can cause flu-like symptoms in people. It is believed that Q fever has caused six human deaths in the Netherlands in 2009.

  • Another happy snap from the mad world of ‘global warming’ by Peter Hitchens, Daily Mail

Article Tags: Peter Hitchens, World Temperatures

Odd, isn’t it? Most of our media have now swallowed the man-made global warming cult so completely that the coldest December in recent memory, here and abroad, has generally been covered with hardly any attempt to explain how this fits in with the idea that the polar ice-caps are about to melt away and drown us all.

I know perfectly well that one cold winter doesn’t necessarily mean that the planet isn’t getting warmer, but this month’s hard frosts are not by any means the only indicator that the whole theory may be wrong. That is the reason for the fuss about the leaked emails, suggesting that scientists may not have been scrupulous about the truth.

Supporters of the panic ask why so many people remain convinced of the warmist theory. Haven’t they heard of embarrassment? If you have ordered everyone into the lifeboats because the ship is sinking, and the ship fails to sink, it is very hard to admit you were wrong – especially if you’ve drifted too far away to get back aboard.

  • Hair Loss Cause

There are many problems which are faced by many people and hair loss is one of them. People believe that hair loss is for people who are ancient. But the truth is hair loss can affect anyone young ancient, men women all are targets of hair loss.

Hair growth normally goes through a honestly steady progress of growing, resting, and shedding. It is said that at any moment, up to 90% of a person’s hair is growing and the other 10% is resting. As hair falls out, a new strand grows in the empty follicle, continuing the cycle. For some, the process is not quite as regular.

There are many factors that cause hair loss or thinning hair. One of the main causes is heredity. If hair loss runs in the family, the chances of a person experiencing hair loss increase dramatically.

Another reason for hair loss is stress and lifestyle. In today’s increasingly quick-paced society, the regular stress of day-to-day activities increases, as do the chances for experiencing hair loss.

Hormone imbalances are also a known cause of hair loss. In men, an abundance of the hormone known as DHT is known to cause problems with hair loss. As a man’s hair naturally sheds itself, what are known as DHT receptor sites build up in the follicles. The excess DHT builds up in the follicle and over time causes the follicles to shrink. With each hair cycle, the follicles get smaller. Eventually, the follicle is too small to let hair through, resulting in thinning hair and ultimately hair loss.

Women have lesser level of DHT effect as the have a hormone called estrogen present which will lesser the affect of excess DHT.

But there are many other causes that may lead to hair loss problems in women, such as pregnancy or taking pills for birth control may cause hormonal changes in women. These changes will affect some women and causes hair loss. When a woman is pregnant, there are certain hormones which are produced in high levels. Such hormones generated will halt the hair growth process in the resting stage. After the hormones regain after pregnancy the process continues and these extra hair will fall off. Which might seem like hair loss, but it is the natural part of pregnancy.

If you are experiencing sudden hair loss or thinning of hair then you must take an appointment with a dermatologist. Hair can be due to infections, diabetes or lupus may cause hair fall. It’s better to know the disease early and cure it before it’s late.

Hair loss can be an embarrassing situation for anyone, young or ancient. But there are things that can be done to stop hair loss and even re-grow lost hair. If you find yourself experiencing hair loss, see your dermatologist.

I am newly diagnosed and am trying to put exercise in to help.

One thing that happened yesterday though spooks me. I spent an hour working removing snow. I was good and sweaty when I came back in. I know I had been at 110 sugar before I started. When I checked after I was at 199 sugar. After working out regular will this jump go away. I came down real quick about 20 minutes after I stopped. Dropped back down to 140 and I felt super tired. Will this happen often if I do a long workout, and is it something I should be concerned about?

  • Chavez threatens to expel Toyota and other automakers from Venezuela

    Hugo Chavez

As if Toyota wasn’t in enough trouble already, Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez has threatened to expel the automaker unless it produces an all-terrain model of 4×4 vehicles for public transport in poor an rural areas. In a speech made late Wednesday, Chavez also said that he would not hesitate to expel and expropriate plants from U.S. and Asian automakers in Venezuela if they do not share their technology with the country.

“What’s this that Toyota doesn’t want to make the ‘rustic’ model here?” Chavez said. “We must force them. And if they don’t, then they should leave and we’ll bring another company in … The Chinese want to come and they make ‘rustic’ models.”

Chavez said he wants Toyota to produce all-terrain 4×4 models for the under-privileged areas where there is a lack of decent roads. He has ordered Trade Minister Eduardo Saman to carry out a “severe inspection” of Toyota.

“You tell the people at Toyota that they have to produce this model and we are going to impose a quota, and if they don’t meet it, we will punish them,” he told Saman.

According to spokesman Yuta Kaga, Toyota has asked the Japanese government to verify Chavez’s intentions since he has not directly contacted the company on the issue.
