  • About to start on Starlix

Endo convinced me to try Starlix 120 mg with met. I would love to know about your experiences with it.

It says I should take it 30 mins before meal. How did that work for you? How did it effect your fasting rate? Was it easy to control? What type of drop off did you see in your spikes? Any bad side effects? What did you do about them and how long did that last?

Whatever you know will be helpful.

  • Hospital Flowers – Yea or Nay?

Banning flowers from hospital rooms has come up from time to time, for a variety of reasons. Some people don’t like them because of the strong scents that some flowers have; others don’t like the extra work of watering them or not having enough room to put down their work tools. flowersAlready, they are banned from many places like intensive care units, where space is at a premium. On the other hand, studies have been done that have promoted the value of plants and flowers for people who are in a hospital or rehabilitation facility. So – who is right?

    On the Nay side:

A couple of generations ago, flowers were removed from the patients’ bedsides every night because it was believed that the oxygen used by the plants would deprive the patients of much needed oxygen. Other earlier studies (in the 70s) claimed that bacteria in the vase water could be harmful. And then, there are bans just because someone decided to ban flowers or plants. There were no official reasons given, just a blanket ban.

    On the Yea side:

According to a study published in the October 2008 issue of HortTechnology, confirmed “the beneficial effects of plants and flowers for patients recovering from abdominal surgery.”

the majority of patients who had plants in their rooms reported that the plants were the most positive qualities of their rooms (93%), whereas patients without plants in their rooms said that watching television was the most favorable aspect of their rooms (91%).

For sure, too many flowers can be difficult to manage. Nurses and other healthcare staff who are allergic to flowers may find it difficult to care for patients who have flowers in their room. For those patients who share rooms, the flowers may cause a problem for their fellow patient. As well, there is such a thing as too many flowers. Some rooms are just overwhelmed with them, making it difficult to move around.

This week’s issue of BMJ.com addresses the issue: Wards of the roses. So what do you think? Do flowers and plants have a place in hospitals? Or should they be left for when the patients go home?

  • COP15: 16 Dec snippets #5

    > Gossip: the World Bank has just increased the recent green bonds issue by $50 million, because the Dec 4 release sold so quickly.

    > Very strong statement put out this week in Copenhagen by "Action by Business on Climate", coalition of WWF, Cambridge Leaders Group, CERES, Climate Group etc, representing 1,000 big businesses. The statement denies that big business would prefer caution and the status quo – and instead advocating a strong Copenhagen deal; and asking if businesses can do it, then why can't world leaders?  They want a legally binding deal that reduces carbon pollution and accelerates clean energy innovation. They want a clear signal that allows businesses to make long term investment decisions in low carbon technologies; Provides incentives to invest heavily in low carbon R&D, and; Protects economies from dramatic impacts of climate change.

We know air technology and how to build quality air products because we’ve been involved in the industry since 1920. That’s the year three men presented an improved vacuum pump design to their company’s management and were met with indifference.

They reacted by launching a new company.

Although the word entrepreneur was not used as frequently in 1920 as it is today, it fits the men who founded Quincy Compressor. They embodied the entrepreneurial spirit so highly regarded in today’s world.

  • Former Yahoo Advertisers Objecting To Class Action Settlement After Realizing They Get Nothing

We’ve discussed in the past how the class action lawsuit process if often abused mercilessly. While the concept of a class action lawsuit can make a lot of sense, as you look at the details of many of the lawsuits, they do little to nothing to benefit the “class,” but plenty to make the lawyers involved quite wealthy. Eric Turkewitz, a personal injury lawyer who actually does tend to like class action lawsuits, finds himself on the other end of one such class action lawsuit — involving charges of click fraud being allowed by Yahoo! — and is now objecting the settlement which pays the lawyers a ton, but offers absolutely nothing to many former Yahoo advertisers, like Turkewitz. In looking over the details of the settlement, he realized that the only companies that would be getting paid (and by getting “paid” it meant $20) were companies no longer in business (which, he notes, also means they’re not likely to file). Once again, we’re seeing a “class action settlement” where the lawyers all make out, but the “class” seems to get shafted.

  • Looks like I have it now

So over the past week I had been getting the classic signs of diabetes. First the extreme thirst and frequent urination hit me quickly, then I noticed I was getting a lot more exhausted (and I work very long hours, travel, etc). Some symptoms passed but came back yesterday. Today I got some keto-diastix and after 5 samples I have registered somewhere between > 500 ml/dl to 2000 ml/dl for my Glucose and neutral > 5 ml/dl on my Ketones.

To add a couple extra factors to this, right now I am 350 miles from my home and tomorrow is my 36th birthday. *sigh*. Plus I can hope I get to my general practitioner tomorrow so the diagnosis can be confirmed and what actions are required.

So I need to plan out some "emergency" meals to get me through the night and tomorrow which will help me do more good than harm but I am pretty much limited to fast food options. Can anyone recommend some options?

  • Co Q 10 /Lipitor

I went to my heart specialist last week hoping I could get off Lipitor. I was complaining to him about it making me feel bad after I take it. Because my lipids are so good he was reluctant to do this at this time, instead he wants me to try 100mg of Co Q 10 for a couple of months to see if I would fell better. Has anyone ever heard of this? Does anyone out there take this?

Lincoln MKX and Ford Edge spy shots – Click above or below for high-res image galleries

    Ford
and Lincoln‘s crossover offerings are plentiful, but all attention is being paid nowadays to the boxy-yet-practical Flex and hit-by-the-ugly-stick MKT. What about the Edge and MKX? This duo was launched years before the automaker’s polarizing pair of three-row CUVs arrived.

Well, their due for redesigns. Or at least, according to these spy shots, refreshenings of their front and rear ends. In the Edge’s case, that means making the already handsome people mover look a bit more windswept, though it appears things will stay largely the same between the A- and D-pillars.

The changes look more substantial for the MKX, which launched before Lincoln debuted its increasingly ubiquitous doubled-winged grille design. That punum looks pretty okay on the MKS sedan and like a baleen whale on the oversized MKT. It looks just right on the MKX to us.

Ford and Lincoln may have other news about the Edge and MKX for us – powertrain and infotainment upgrades most likely – at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show in early January, which is when we expect to see these new looks formally trotted out on stage.
