Perusing this roundup of unintentionally hilarious old-school advertisements that might have made Don Draper and crew wince brings a few thoughts to mind:

    * Ad wizards from mid-century America didn’t think too highly of women, regarding them as feeble house-cleaning robots who couldn’t drive very well.

    * Douching to save one’s marriage was — if not a common course of action — at least commonly advised as such.

    * People thought it was funny to fantasize in ads about threatening physical harm to the fairer sex.

Android 2.2. Froyo screen brightness widget

The power widget you see here isn’t really new in Android 2.2, but it’s been tweaked for Froyo. The screen brightness selector now includes an auto brightness setting (using the ambient light sensor) in addition to the three static settings (low, medium and high). It’s a nice little addition for those of us who prefer to let the phone determine the screen brightness.

  • Lindsay Lohan Tweets: ‘Save Me Chanel From The Awkward Scram Bracelet’

Just a few days back we reported of Lindsay Lohan missing the court proceedings, on which the court had ordered an arrest warrant on her. Lohan got stuck up in London attending the Cannes Film Festival where she lost her passport and wasn’t able to return to the pavilion and report in front of the judge. Later on the court ordered the lady to wear an alcohol monitoring bracelet, more known as the Scram Bracelet. This simple tool was made necessary as to make her avoid drinking alcohol of any type.

Just recently, the lady was seen enjoying a night out with her friends at the bar in her new blonde look. The actress danced and fooled around but never touched alcohol. The bracelet might be helping her keep on the right track but today we noticed something funny or we may say trendy.

Lindsay Lohan called upon Chanel to spice up the bracelet and give her a new look as it was ruining her image and she herself felt a bit non-comfy. She asked to bring some beauty on the bracelet as we followed her on the great social networking site, Twitter.

The site has always been on the lead as different celebrities voice concerns of their life.

  • VOICES: Obama sends in the border troops

By Melissa del Bosque, Texas Observer

While conservatives have already started blaming President Obama
for not allowing the National Guard to construct gun turrets on top of
the 18-foot border wall and start blazing away, it’s actually those
sissies at the Pentagon that want to make sure the 1,200 additional
troops don’t engage in law enforcement duties.

According to CBS News: “Pentagon officials, worried about perceptions
that the U.S. was militarizing the border, argued that the National
Guard could only be used for particular duties. Military leaders said
they did not want National Guard troops to screen vehicles at border
points or perform any law enforcement duties, and said the program
should be temporary and not tied to any existing program that could get
    extended.”

So, if the Pentagon doesn’t think the border needs troops, what’s
this all about you ask?  Quite simply, like everything else in
Washington D.C., it’s about money and elections.

That’s right. As I’ve said before It’s mid-term elections, folks. So,
batten down the hatches and get ready for the National Guard. I
Remember back in 2006,  President George W. Bush stalking through Yuma
with his shirtsleeves rolled up and backed by an impressive phalanx of
border troops. Back then the Republicans needed a bump in the polls
during mid-term elections. So we got Operation
    Jumpstart
a deployment of 6,000 soldiers. Border security (i.e. the
hordes of unwashed masses) and gay marriage helped ratchet up the voter
    fear level to Red Alert.

And by God if it doesn’t work every time. Nothing gets voters to the
polls faster then a good dose of fear coursing through their synapses.

Back then Senator “complete that danged fence” McCain was actually
working in a bipartisan effort to solve our broken immigration system
with Senator Kennedy. Ah, those were the days. We were so close back
then – we even had 20 Republicans supporting reform – but now, alas
    things have deteriorated considerably.

McCain is clutching onto his Senate seat with all of his strength.
And the mighty anti-incumbent wind whistling through Congress is about
to blow him right out of it. Is it any accident that as McCain’s polling
numbers go down in Arizona the Senator asks for more troops for
the border? First it was 3,000 in his McCain/Kyl  secure border plan.
    This month it’s 6,000.

Is it any accident that two of the Republican Governors (Perry and Brewer) asking for National
Guard troops on the border are currently running for re-election? The
other two (Schwarzenegger, a Republican and New Mexico’s Bill
Richardson, a Democrat) have reached their term limits. This year,
Schwarzenegger didn’t deploy the National Guard as he did in 2006. In
March, Richardson announced the deployment of New Mexico National Guard
troops to the border after the shooting death of an Arizona rancher in
    late March.

    Border law enforcement have said
consistently that they have the threat from drug cartel traffickers
under control. They frequently say they can always hire more officers
which can be funded under the federal Operation Stonegarden program.
What they don’t need is military troops.

The National Guard is political window dressing, folks. A decision made by the Obama Administration after a
closed door meeting with Republican leaders yesterday. The Republicans
will not lift a finger to work on comprehensive immigration reform until
after elections in November. By being increasingly hawkish and
immovable as stone, the Grand Ol’ Party is betting everything it has on
immigrant bashing this election season. “Secure the borders first,” they
    say. “Then we’ll talk.”

They said the same thing back in 2006 and 2007. The last deployment
of the National Guard by Bush in 2006 was to strengthen border security
while more Border Patrol agents were hired. We’ve now doubled the number
of border agents from 10,000 in 2004 to 20,000 in 2009. And according
to a March 2010 press release, Homeland Security has “doubled the number
    of personnel assigned to Border Enforcement Security Task Forces;
tripled the number of ICE intelligence analysts working along the
    U.S.-Mexico border; quadrupled deployments of Border Liaison Officers;
and begun screening 100 percent of southbound rail shipments for illegal
weapons, drugs and cash–for the first time ever.”

If you’ve been anywhere near the Texas-Mexico border these days
you’ll see the skyline dotted with surveillance towers and an 18-foot
wall. Not to mention swarms of Border Patrol SUVs. All that’s missing at
this point are the military tanks.

The states and the Pentagon have been bickering for nearly a year
over who should pay for this latest deployment of guardsmen. Their
bickering over the deployment is because the Pentagon brass knows the
deployment is not warranted. This time, I think elected officials should
pay for it out of their campaign accounts.

  • “Ghost Whisperer” Won’t Be Revived By ABC

Ghost Whisperer, the cult supernatural drama that was surprisingly axed by CBS last week, will not crossover to ABC.

“After five wonderful seasons and over 100 episodes, we are disappointed to announce Ghost Whisperer will not be returning for a sixth season,” executive producers Kim Moses and Ian Sander said in a statement Thursday. “We’ve had an incredible experience and owe a debt of gratitude to everyone involved. We continue our relationship with ABC Studios and look forward to developing many more successful projects together in the future.”

The release came in response to reports suggesting that Ghost Whisperer would be given a new lease on life on The Alphabet Network after ABC chiefs expressed interest in the series. The network ultimately passed on the show after talks with Whisperer producers fell through.

The long-running Friday night series starred Jennifer Love Hewitt as Melinda Gordon a medium who can communicate with the dead and helps them settle “unfinished business” and crossover to the other side.

  • Skype Intends to “Set the Bar on Mobile Video Calling”

As we gear up for the release of the HTC EVO 4G, software developers, and fans, are turning their focus to the front-facing camera and the possibilities that rest within.  Just this week we’ve seen mentions of Fring and Qik for taking advantage of the camera.  What about another software company out there who already offers video chat on desktops?  What does Skype have planned for Android?

As some of you already know, Skype (Android) is currently only offered to Verizon customers.  However, we’ve learn that this may soon change.  The guys over at Skatter Tech reached out to Skype to see if perhaps they would be doing anything special for phones that have cameras on the front. Here’s a shortened version of the response received from the PR team:

Skype envisions a world where video plays a larger role in the way we communicate.  It’s on computers, televisions, and it will eventually be coming to mobile devices too. We’re betting big on video, and we intend to set the bar on mobile video calling, and it’s something we’re going to do this year.   We will be bringing a direct to consumer app to the Android marketplace later this year. This application will be available for all consumers globally to download regardless of carriers. – Brianna Reynaud, Skype PR

Exciting news!  Two big takeaways – Skype will be available as a download for all carriers video chat is coming too!

  • Largest solar power plant of its type being built in Taiwan

    Solutia_Components_i_33704a.jpg
Solar power plants are springing up faster than ever these days. Italy’s power plant being built has grabbed a whole lot of attention lately. Well, its time for Taiwan to now bask in the glory of the sun. A 4.6MW solar power plant is currently being built at the Kaohsiung County in Taiwan. Taipower, a state-run utility firm is currently in talks with Taiwan Sugar Corp to lease the land it owns for the project.

Local residents are however opposing the solar power project, taken that they have other ideas for the land’s use. This will be the biggest solar plant of its type on the island. Taipower also plans to install a 4MW capacity solar power station on a Taiwan Sugar-owned land in Tainan. 97% of Taipower is owned by the government, and the firm currently produces around 75% of the electricity used. The Taiwan Government hopes that around 15% of the nation’s energy needs will be satisfied with renewable energy by the year 2025. We hope so too!

  • The Mooovie electric vehicle, convertible from a 3-wheeler to a 2-wheeler

    moovie-_01.jpg
Futuristic contraptions with weird names seem to be the “in” thing today. Give them a punch of green features, and people tend to love them even more! Well, the latest vehicle in this category is the Mooovie. The need for three “o”s in a name sure set us thinking. A confusing name aside, the Mooovie won the Gold Award of Best Advanced Technology in the first “Science & Future” International Concept Car Design Contest, and for a good reason. The vehicle designed by Han Jing, graduate from School of Fine Art, Tsinghua University, came up with this vehicle, that can switch between a 3-wheel and 2-wheel mode.

The vehicle is great for use in cities and highways too, with zero emissions, thanks to its electric powered motor. It compresses to a two-wheeler on cramped roads. The three-wheel mode lets you drive at a higher speed. The vehicle also uses an intelligent automatic drive that can control the distance between vehicles. An interactive wheel-display keeps the driver entertained and informed. The Mooovie is sure to grab hearts around, if commercially available.

  • Solar powered radios made from bamboo

    bamboo-radio.jpg
Tuning to the radio-waves could create jobs for the people of Madagascar, thanks to 22 year old Becky Barber who came up with a radio design that could help with job opportunities. Becky came up with a radio constructed out of bamboo. The solar powered device, Becky hopes, could help build a social enterprise opportunity in Madagascar. Two thirds of the population of Madagascar lives below the poverty line. Using sustainable and naturally occurring resources to construct radios like these could help provide the people with jobs.

Becky has visited Madagascar loads of times before, where her parents live, working for charities since the last 26 years. Bamboo is available in Madagascar in certain areas on a plentiful scale, and the cost of production of these green solar powered bamboo radios can be pushed down. Hopefully, Becky’s plan works out and workshops with good salaries for producing radios like these and perhaps a few more products out of sustainable sources spring up in Madagascar.
