  • Tomb Raider Developers Walk Us Through Combat, Exploration

Crystal Dynamic’s Tomb Raider reboot will be out in less than a month, and the hype machine has been going steady for a few months now. The developers now have a bit of extra time to show players more of the game, and what they can expect when the game launches on March 5.

In a developer walkthrough released today, the game’s creative director walks players through a short section of the game that has Lara Croft making her way to a monastery on the island where the game’s plot unfolds. Most of the playthrough is focused on what players can expect from the game’s combat and exploration.

Through most of the gameplay demo, the creative director focuses predominantly on tactics and the decisions players can make when approaching enemies. It’s a little disappointing then that most of the gameplay looks like a run and gun kind of experience. Here’s hoping the title will encourage more variety when it launches next month.

Tomb Raider hits the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on March 5.

  • Bug Hunt Is The First Planned DLC For Aliens: Colonial Marines, Will Be Out In March

Aliens: Colonials Marines comes out tomorrow, and that means Gearbox and Sega will now be directing its attention towards DLC for the title. Sega outlined its plans over the weekend on how it intends to support the title throughout 2013.

Sega says that Aliens: Colonial Marines will receive four DLC add-ons throughout 2013 that add more campaign and multiplayer content. The first of which is called Bug Hunt, and it features a cooperative multiplayer mode that has players taking down hordes of Xenomorphs across three new maps based on the Aliens film. The DLC is scheduled to arrive at the end of March.

As for the other DLC add-ons, Sega says that everything will be out by the end of August of this year. You can preorder all of the DLC now as part of the season pass that gives players all four add-ons for $29.99. The content will be available separately as well, but it will apparently cost 40 percent more that way.

The Season Pass is already available for preorder on Steam for 10 percent off. It will be available on Xbox Live and the PSN soon.

There’s still no word on when the Wii U version of Colonial Marines will be made available, or if it will get the same offer of a season pass. The delayed release of the Wii U version may also mean that Gearbox will include the first DLC add-on for free with the Wii U version, or at least we can hope.

  • Age Of Wonders 3 Brings Medieval Strategy To Your PC This Fall

The PC has seen a renaissance of late as certain franchises that haven’t seen any action for years are now getting sequels. The latest is Age of Wonders, which hasn’t seen a new game since 2003′s Shadow Magic.

Triumph Studios, developers of the original Age of Wonders titles, announced today that Age of Wonders 3 is on track for a PC release later this year. This new game will introduce a number of new features, including the addition of RPG elements.

Check out the debut trailer here:

Here’s a breakdown of all the new features the new title sports:

  • Explore, expand and exploit a living fantasy world. Discover wondrous locations and gather legendary heroes.
  • Develop your domain, with many classes having the ability to change terrain and climates to suit your needs.
  • All new 3D graphics that provide a crisper and more detailed overview of the world and battle maps.
  • New styles of play are possible with the introduction of RPG style leader classes like warlord, theocrat, rogue and sorcerer, along with a wide selection of specializations.
  • Command a variety of races. Pick your starting race and shape your people’s destiny using your leader’s unique skills.
  • A brand-new tactical battle system renders each battlefield and siege in great detail; new rules include flanking and a massive set of special unit abilities.

  • Compete online in extensive multiplayer modes and scenarios.
  • High replay value through random maps, difficulty modes and tools allowing user created content.
  • There’s no official release date, but the game will be available in late 2013 on various digital distribution channels. The game will also be getting a limited physical release, but it will probably only be available in Europe.

  • The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct Now Coming Out On March 19

Remember The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct? It’s the first-person shooter based on the wildly popular graphic novel and TV series of the same name. It was originally scheduled to come out on March 26, but publisher Activision has moved it up a week.

Polygon reports that the latest The Walking Dead game will now launch on March 16 for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. The Wii U version of the title will launch a week later on March 26.

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct has run into some rough patches since being announced last year. For one, the title is already facing skepticism from gamers who feel that it can’t possibly live up to the high standard set by Telltale’s The Walking Dead games from last year. It also doesn’t help that a fan cut together some early footage and called it a gameplay trailer. Many gamers took it as the real deal and assumed the early footage was representative of the final product.

Now Activision and developer Terminal Reality have a little over a month and a half to convince players that it has what it takes to deliver a game that Walking Dead fans can rally behind. Unfortunately, Activision hasn’t exactly been selling the game to players very well. The latest trailer features no gameplay instead opting to have the TV series’ actors talk about it for less than 20 seconds.

  • BioShock Infinite Mockumentary Explores The Origins Of Columbia

I may not have been the biggest fan of the original BioShock, but I absolutely adored the world of Rapture. I was more concerned with finding the audio logs from its residents more than I was the central narrative because I had to know more about the underwater hell I was exploring. BioShock Infinite’s Columbia inspires similar feelings of awe and wonder, but now we have a documentary to fill in some of the pieces before the game launches in March.

2K Games released a mockumentary today titled, “Columbia: A Modern Day Icarus?” It explores the origins of the floating city of Columbia with some expertly edited photos and video footage from the late 1800s/early 1900s. It’s probably the best trailer released for the game yet. Check it out:

If you’re like me, you’re probably wanting an entire short feature done in this mockumentary style now. The world of BioShock Infinite looks compelling enough to deserve a short film exploring its world. Maybe the troubled BioShock film can be converted into a BioShock Infinite film. The themes and iconography of the game would probably play better to an American audience instead of the Ayn Rand drenched world of the original.

BioShock Infinite will be available on March 26 for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

  • Resident Evil 6 For PC Gets Exclusive Mercenaries Mode

Resident Evil 6 was critically panned when it first launched, but that hasn’t dissuaded Capcom from releasing the PC port in March. In fact, the publisher announced a new mode exclusive to the PC version that should provide a hearty challenge to the most hardcore players.

Capcom announced today that Resident Evil 6 for the PC will launch with a new mode for the popular Mercenaries game type. It’s called No Mercy, and it throws more enemies at players than was possible on consoles. Furthermore, Capcom will release a benchmark test before the title’s launch so PC players can determine if their PC is up to snuff. You can check out the system requirements here.

PC players aren’t the only ones getting some new Resident Evil 6 content in the future, however, as the console versions will be getting a new multiplayer mode called “Seige” in March. The add-on pack supports two to six players who are spread across two teams. One team consists of monsters trying to kill an AI controlled BSAA agent while the other team is made up of the cast from RE6 trying to protect him. In short, Capcom has turned the escort mission into a multiplayer mode. This is innovation, folks.

The new Seige mode will retail for $3.99 when it launches sometime in March for the PS3 and Xbox 360. This mode, alongside previously released DLC, will be available for the PC version shortly after its launch on March 22.

In other Resident Evil news, Capcom will be bringing a hi-def port of 3DS title, Resident Evil Revelations, to the PS3, Xbox 360, PC and Wii U in May.

  • X-Tube DTS Surround Sound Sensation Laptop Dongle Gets Reviewed With Surprisingly Positive Verdict [Dts]

Curse the fact (again) I don’t live in Japan! Akihabara News has greased their mitts all over Hanwa’s dongle, which upgrades the audio on your laptop to that of DTS surround sound sensation.

After admitting they were—understandably—skeptical about what the dongle would do to a laptop’s audio, the Windows-only peripheral comes with DTS headphones, an installation CD and detachable USB port.

Akihabara News says the dongle is “stylish and well-built,” but “you won’t get a sound like that produced by a real tube headphone amp since it’s not a real vacuum tube.” While the dongle may’ve gone down well with the site, the headphones were derided as being “cheap” (though with the whole bundle costing the equivalent of $45 it’s not surprising really), so they used their own headphones instead.

After installing the software, you have to set the surround effects for either music or movies, with both formats working well—”the result is far from being bad,” though it’s “more of an amplification of the sound than a surrounding simulation.”

It may only be available in Japan so far, but with Akihabara News saying it “may be the best alternative to your laptop built-in audio system,” I can already sense all the Japanese export sites buying up stock. [Akihabara News]

  • LG’s Super-Skinny X300 Netbook On Sale This Month [NetBooks]

Seen back in January at CES, the 17.5mm thick LG X300 netbook’s formally been announced as going on sale this month to our South American, Asian and Middle Eastern friends. It’s worth considering if you’re wanting a Windows 7 netbook.

Cast your mind back a few months, and you’ll recall it caused quite a storm due to its slinky size. Its 11.6-inch LCD screen doesn’t have much of a bezel to speak of, and the chiclet tiled keyboard is close to full-size. Check the press release below for the full story on the Dell Adamo-like netbook. (I say Dell Adamo rather than the MacBook Air, due to how square and tray-like it is). [LG]

LG Electronics (LG), a global leader and technology innovator in mobile communications, today announced the launch of the LG X300, the ultra-thin premium mobile PC. Its sleek and stylish look wowed the visitors at CES 2010 in Las Vegas.

“Given how demanding and discerning consumers are nowadays, we were delighted to receive such acclaim from the public and media at the CES for our new mobile PC,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “It’s a vindication of LG’s efforts to maintain the very highest standards in design without any sacrifices in high-tech or functionality, and ensure our consumers’ experiences with LG PCs just keep getting better.”

The LG X300, LG’s new flagship mobile computing device for 2010, tips the scales at a mere 970g and is only 17.5mm thick for the ultimate in portability.

What’s more, the LG X300 boasts an array of enticing design features. The sleek but wide 11.6-inch LCD screen maximizes the viewing area by eschewing a bezel. Also, its unique reflective keyboard and borderless touchpad add further elegance to this premium mobile PC. To offer the complete package for the most style-conscious users, the LG X300 comes in two colors, shiny white and light brown.

Fitted with a 2.0 GHz Intel Menlow platform with up to 2GB memory and 128GB SSD, the LG X300 runs Windows 7 Home Premium OS and ships with a spare 2-cell battery to provide up to seven hours of use. Thanks to its fan-less, silent operation, the portable PC is also extremely quiet to run, while the LG Smart Pack – LG’s smartest software suite for PC users – ensures the LG X300 is easy to use, even for novices.

The LG X300 packs multimedia features including a 1.3-megapixel webcam with a You-Cam viewer, and SRS TruSurround HD sound. And thanks to an embedded 3G modem chipset, users can easily get online via GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, or HSDPA networks.

The LG X300 will be available in Asia starting in March, followed by the Middle East and South America. Prices will vary country-to-country and will be announced separately in each market.

  • CryENGINE 3 in Stereoscopic 3D Shown Off by Crytek

Crysis broke damn near every computer that was thrown at it when it was released. For good reason too – it was the most realistic looking game ever developed and it spawned thousands of “Real vs. Crysis” photographs and the “Yes… but can it play Crysis?” internet meme. The European developers of Crysis, Crytek GmbH (“Crytek”), have found phenomenal success with the release of their games with jaw-dropping graphics and fluid gameplay that keeps you begging for more.

In this year’s Game Developer Conference (GDC), Crytek showed off its new engine, the CryENGINE 3, coupled with stereoscopic 3D (S-3D) screens. The result was pure awesomeness. Being the fastest and the most robust renderer, CryENGINE 3 serves the PC, the PS3 and the XBox360 with the most photorealistic indoor rendering, extraordinary real-time effects and the impact of being in the game rather than playing it. Using S-3D technology, this involvement with the game became that much more real.

    crysis_2

Carl Jones, Director of Global Business Development at Crytek, said

Over the past few years, S-3D technology has emerged as one of the key trends both in movies and games. With CryENGINE 3, developers will have the ability to create their content in 3D on all platforms. There are basically no longer any limits to a designer’s creativity. CryENGINE 3 features many innovations to accelerate development, cut production costs and ensure teams are able to maximize their own creativity without delays

The cutting-edge technology of Crytek just got sharper.
