Motorola 2.1 Updates Outlined
This is good news for most Moto Android users and not so much for others. This document was found on Motorola website and it lists when the 2.1 update will be pushed out to all of their current Android handsets. From the sheet, the Droid OTA’s is currently in the process and there is more after the break.

If you recently purchased a Devour, there is currently no update in sight for you. This is probably due to the fact that the device is new on the market. I suspect it will be updated around the same time as the Backflip which is scheduled for a Q3 release. The Cliq and the Cliq XT is scheduled for a Q2 OTA, we are currently almost in the midway point of Q2, and hopefully 2.1 will be pushed out to the Cliq soon. All these dates could be pushed back even further, Motorola isn’t exactly the best at handling updates.

Intel Has Plans For Atom Based Android Devices
Looks like Intel is late to their own party. We’ve seen Android running on x86 CPU’s numerous times before. Intel has recently announced plans to enter the Android game. They are the leading CPU manufacturer and are now looking to take a cut into ARM’s profit.

Intel already has Android running on Atom-based smartphones and certain customers are interested in using it, said Renee James, general manager of Intel’s software and services group, on the sidelines of the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in Beijing.
Most of their leg work has been done by other companies. Intel is hoping these Atom-based Android devices will be a huge hit. With their track record, I expect nothing less than greatness from them and their products. We may start to see these devices soon since they have some working products. The ninja spy shots should start to pop up soon.

Everything – A Super Fast Portable File Search
[Windows Only] “Everything” is a small and portable freeware program that lets you find files in Windows with blazing speed. About two years ago, one of my readers sent me a nice comment about it, and I’ve been using it every since.
Here’s what the main window of Everything looks like after a search:
As you can see in the snapshot here, Everything supports the normal Windows file context menus when you right-click on a file. This is one of my favorite features. That means that you can launch a file, open a folder, copy, move or rename a file without having to leave Everything’s search window.
There are plenty of other features in Everything, such as;
• Small installation file
• Clean and simple user interface
• Quick file indexing
• Quick searching
• Minimal resource usage
• Share files with others easily
• Real-time updating… and much more.
One of the many features that I have rarely used, is Everything’s ability to broadcast it’s search results across a network or the internet using FTP, ETP or HTTP. That means you can set it up so that anyone on your network can search the computer that Everything is running on. Here’s what the results look like in a web browser.
You can even download the files to another PC using the web browser.
Another of my favorite features in Everything is the fact that it’s portable. When I move it from one PC to another, I only take a single file named “everything.exe”. Once that single file is running, it creates it’s own settings file and it’s own database file in the same folder that it’s running in.
One thing you may notice is that Everything does take a few seconds to scan your drive and while it’s doing that, the search results window is completely blank. Before you get used to this fact, you might be tempted to start typing a search query into the search field. Don’t bother, because nothing will happen until it’s done scanning your drives.
The search results are immediate and update with every character you type into the search field. It does support wild card, boolean and regex searches if you need that type of searching power.
Download Everything Search
Techie Buzz Verdict:
I use Everything quite often and it’s a must-have utility for all of my PCs. It does almost everything I need but it is missing one thing that other indexed search programs have; it can’t search inside of files for matching results. I rarely need that feature, and I have no problem recommending Everything for everyone.

MeLLmo’s Roambi Business Visualization App Comes to iPad, Links to More Data Sources
If you want your company to buy you an iPad or an iPhone, here’s a tip. Get someone from MeLLmo to stop by and show its data visualization software to your firm’s CEO, CFO, or COO. The Del Mar, CA-based startup’s mobile business app, called Roambi, plugs into enterprise business-intelligence systems and creates interactive charts and graphs for the iPhone and iPad that are so slick that once an executive has tried a device loaded with the software, they usually don’t want to give it back.
“We’ve been with customers who are 100 percent on BlackBerry, and they want to buy iPhones just to run our application,” Santiago Becerra, MeLLmo’s co-founder, chairman, and CEO, told Xconomy last week. “With the iPad, it’s too early to tell, but I have one data point—I met yesterday with a Fortune 500 COO and showed him the iPad app and just left the iPad with him. This morning I heard that he’s already getting all his direct reports converted.”
The Roambi Visualizer iPhone app is available free from the iTunes app store. MeLLmo was careful to ensure that an iPad version—which shows off data to even better advantage than the iPhone app—would be available for the device’s launch on April 3. But the more significant news for the startup, which Bruce profiled last September, is the launch this week of an improved version of its enterprise server. This is the software that connects to business-intelligence systems and prepares data such as sales figures for display on mobile devices, and it’s the product that brings in MeLLmo’s actual revenue.
MeLLmo announced at the Gartner Business Intelligence Summit in Las Vegas yesterday that “Roambi ES3,” as the server software is called, can connect with more business intelligence data sources: on top of SAP BusinessObjects, Salesforce CRM, and Microsoft Excel, it can now tap data from IBM Cognos, LifeRay, Microsoft Sharepoint, and Microsoft Reporting Services. In addition, the new server can create Flash versions of the usual Roambi charts and graphics, meaning employees can access Roambi data dashboards from their desktop or laptop computers as well as their Apple mobile devices.
The changes are intended to make the idea of mobile business intelligence dashboards attractive to a larger swath of companies. “We’re making a huge push to expand who can use Roambi,” says Quinton Alsbury, MeLLmo’s president. “We are doubling the set of data sources that can be integrated, and alongside the new connectivity we’re expanding the number of platforms.”
At the same time, the new server can show data in new ways, including a “trends” view that makes it easier to see how performance indicators are changing over time, and a “pod” view that let users create custom dashboards combining their favorite data types in one view. Behind the scenes, the company has introduced a number of other improvements, such as …Next Page »

Massachusetts Venture Funding Slimmed Down to $194 Million in March, But Healthcare Investing Swelled
Erin Kutz wrote:
It’s no question that March was a disorderly month. Here in New England, 70-degree days were quickly followed by record flooding for the region. The NCAA tournament saw major upsets in nearly every round (only for Duke to win the championship in the end.) Oh, and a little something called healthcare reform was signed into law, after a year of raucous town hall meetings, bitter debate, and talk of baby killers and death panels.
The venture investing patterns in the Bay State last month followed much the same rocky, incongruent path marked by highs and lows. Some sectors rose to heightened levels of dominance, while some disappeared from the startup-investing scheme completely. It all amounted to $194.5 million raised across 17 deals, a slight drop from the month before, when Bay State startups wrapped up $203 million in 26 equity deals. The funding totals made March a pretty average month since we started tracking monthly venture investing in June, thanks to data provided by our New York-based partner CB Insights, a private company intelligence platform. (Five months had higher venture investing totals, and four months fell behind March in dollars raised).
The New England region wasn’t in the only place to experience slowed venture investing last month; Seattle-area deal making fell to $21.3 million across a mere three deals, down from $53.5 million in 10 deals in February. It is worth noting that the 17 transactions in Massachusetts in March tied for the lowest number of deals since we started tracking these numbers. But the fact that March’s 17 deals amounted to about $50 million more than the $145 million raised across 17 deals last June shows that the size of individual transactions might be growing.
If there’s something to brag about from last month, it’s the life sciences sector. Healthcare funding soared to $144.2 million, which represents nearly 75 percent of the venture dollars raised in March. The number of healthcare deals for February and March was even at nine, but the March totals dwarfed the February tally of $89.9 million. All told, healthcare companies
took up the five highest deal slots in March, and the sector pulled in roughly $120 million more than the runnerup category, Internet.
The biggest transaction was the $35.4 million that went to TransMedics, an Andover, MA-based developer of systems for transporting organs for transplant. Foundation Capital, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and Flagship Ventures participated in the round, which included about $9 million of convertible debt.
Gene therapy developer Genetix Pharmaceuticals was right at its heels with the second biggest deal: $35 million in Series B money. The Cambridge-based company attracted new investors Third Rock Ventures and Genzyme Ventures for the round.
As previously mentioned, Internet came in second as a sector, with $24.2 million across five deals in March. This might …Next Page »

SpaceClaim Captures $5 Million Series D Funding to “Democratize” 3D Modeling
Concord, MA-based SpaceClaim has raised an additional $5 million in Series D funding, bringing its total venture pot to just over $30 million, president and CEO Chris Randles told Xconomy yesterday. The four-year-old startup sells 3D modeling software for non-engineers, and has been enjoying explosive growth over the past year, according to Randles.
The funds came from SpaceClaim’s existing coterie of investors, with North Bridge Venture Partners and Kodiak Ventures in the lead and Borealis Ventures and Needham Capital Partners also on board. Randles says SpaceClaim, which experienced a 2.5-fold increase in sales in 2009 and even faster growth in the first quarter of 2010, has moved solidly beyond the R&D phase and needed the new funds to invest in sales and marketing support. “Our big investment is in customer-facing technical staff who can help existing and prospective customers solve problems, as well as sales staff,” says Randles.
SpaceClaim is part of a major cluster of engineering software companies with headquarters or major outposts in New England, from established giants such as Autodesk, Dassault Systèmes (which owns Concord-based SolidWorks), and PTC, better known as Parametric Technology Corporation. In fact, both Randles and SpaceClaim co-founder Daniel Dean spent time at PTC. “It’s an overlooked asset in this area,” says Randles.
PTC largely invented parametric modeling, the dominant paradigm in 3D mechanical design, in the mid-1980s. To hear Randles tell it, there hasn’t been any fundamental innovation in the computer-aided design (CAD) field since then, though he says SolidWorks and other companies have improved on the idea. SpaceClaim’s innovation, which the company calls “direct modeling,” is to give engineers simple tools that allow them to experiment with design concepts by moving, stretching, combining, and re-using shapes onscreen.
“People who use CAD tend to be people who are specialists in CAD—if you want a parallel, think of the database specialists before the days of Microsoft Access,” says Randles. “We are democratizing 3D by bringing powerful but very easy-to-use 3D modeling tools to engineers who have never really used CAD.”
Randles says SpaceClaim’s business is split roughly equally between the Americas, Asia, and Europe. Automotive manufacturers and suppliers were the biggest customers in 2009, followed by aerospace and defense, consumer goods, and medical device companies.
SpaceClaim’s software is in demand because it helps companies’ product designers experiment with new designs without having to involve CAD specialists at every step. “3D modeling technology is changing working practices and moving things to market quicker,” Randles says. “In an odd way the global recession has also helped us—it’s made companies come to terms with some of their inefficiencies. When things are good, you tend to put off radical rethinking or reengineering.”

Venture Activity Report Charts Surge in Energy and Cleantech Investments, Smaller-Sized Deal
Venture investments continued to improve during the first three months of 2010, led by a strong comeback in both dollars and deals involving startups focused on energy and utilities, according to a report released today by CB Insights, the New York firm previously known as ChubbyBrain.
Venture firms sank $5.9 billion in 731 deals nationwide during the first quarter, according to the CB Insights Venture Capital Activity Report. Those numbers look especially strong—more than 50 percent higher—in comparison to the same quarter of 2009, when VC investments of $3.9 billion in 483 companies hit an 11-year low.
The results also are stronger sequentially. The $5.9 billion is a nearly 7.3 percent gain over the $5.5 billion that was invested during the fourth quarter of 2009. The analysts at CB Insights suggest that both VC investors and entrepreneurs are gaining confidence about their prospects in the wake of the financial crisis that took the U.S. economy over a cliff in late 2008, according to the analysts at CB Insights.
Healthcare remained the single largest sector for venture money, although less VC money was invested in more deals than the previous quarter. Venture activity in Massachusetts and New York also gained against California, although the Golden State still claims the lions’ share of both dollars and deals.
In its 32-page report, CB Insights says, “While $5.9B remains far below quarterly levels seen before the …Next Page »

Check out this facebook video Microsoft posted, it’s shown at about 30 seconds in:
If this is really the tech Microsoft is looking to bring to the mobile space where users can drag any content/element from any screen and drop it in another screen/application would be awesome, can I use the word revolutionary? I don’t even know what to think, all I can say is this tech is cool. I would love for it be in Windows Phone 7.What do you guys think?

The Mac for Non-Profits: A Value Proposition
If you manage a small to medium sized non-profit chances, are that you’ve never considered Macs for your organization, or that if you have, you’ve quickly been turned off when you see that the cost of entry starts at around $1000 per machine. Let’s face it, operations budgets at non-profits are usually the tightest, and that’s saying something, especially in today’s economic environment.
That budget goes not only towards things like putting a computer in the hands of each employee, but also keeping the lights on and paying the rent. Given those constraints, many non-profits are much more likely to look at sub-$500 Windows computers instead of Macs.
Unfortunately, by making that decision you may be costing your organization in the long term. Here are three reasons why even a non-profit with a tight budget should be strongly considering Macs.
1) Support costs
There are the obvious reasons why Macs cost less to support, ranging from the fact that you don’t need to worry about viruses to the stability of OS X. Less obvious is the fact that recent surveys of IT professionals have found that Mac computers are less costly to manage than Windows PCs.
For smaller non-profits who don’t have an in-house IT department, you’ll also want to consider the value of the Genius Bar. If you have an Apple store anywhere near your office you can simply walk in with a problematic computer and usually have your problem solved quickly and easily. Compare that to the cost of spending time on the phone with Dell or HP support, or the lost opportunity that can accrue if you have to ship your computer away for repairs.
2) Longevity
I’m not one of those people who thinks that all Windows PCs are built like junk. You can certainly find a reliable computer running Windows, but there are two key things to consider. First, your chances of getting a reliable computer at a very low price isn’t great. Second, the odds of picking the right model from the array of available Windows computers also works against you.
By contrast, almost any model of Mac is a solid bet to be a reliable computer for three or four years. Trust me, I’ve been in organizations that have had to replace their entire collection of computers barely a year after buying inexpensive Windows laptops. You have to ask yourself if you want to buy two cheap computers over four years or one more reliable one. If it’s the latter, you’re probably better off going with Mac.
3) Software
This is usually a mark against the move to Macs, the argument being that you will need to repurchase all of your expensive software for another platform. Non-profits can avoid much of this cost due to services like TechSoup, which allow them to purchase software at a steep discount. If you’re a small non-profit iLife provides you with excellent tools to produce multimedia and a simple website without spending a single additional cent.
If you do need to do something more complex you have an incredible array of easy to use, attractive and relatively inexpensive applications to choose from. A few suggestions that would work well in a non-profit setting include Bento, RapidWeaver, iWork, iBank and Acorn. These range in cost from free to well under $100.
The value of any computing platform is defined by what you can do on it, and the Mac is without peer in this regard. There is value in having software that just works, and there is also value in having employees that enjoy working with their platform rather than suffering under it.

From Boston to San Diego, Companies Maneuver to Catch Online Video Wave
Apple’s recent launch of the iPad has triggered intensifying interest in online video distribution, which seems to be reflected in a string of announcements that coincide with today’s kickoff of the National Association of Broadcasters’ annual conference in Las Vegas.
As if reminding everyone of the size of their network, Cambridge, MA-based Akamai Technologies (NASDAQ: AKAM), announced today that unprecedented demand for online coverage of major sport events—including streaming video—pushed traffic on its global network to a single-day peak of 3.45 terabits per second on Friday. That’s roughly equivalent to the capacity needed to download the entire text of the U.S. Library of Congress in less than a minute.
The company noted that surging interest in major sporting events, including professional golf and baseball, helped to drive traffic to a new peak for high definition streaming video—part of a network platform that Akamai launched in 2009. San Diego-based VMIX also announced today it has broadened its relationship with Akamai by standardizing its online video capabilities with Akamai’s HD Network.
As Wade recently reported, Brightcove, another Cambridge, MA, company that has been a longtime proponent of Adobe’s Flash-based digital video technology, has moved to …Next Page »

Temporarily Disable Windows Power Settings with Don’t Sleep
[Windows only]: While downloading large files from the internet, sometimes you may not be sitting in front of your computer. Often, you would put the computer in download mode and leave the desk for some other work. The downloads would take hours to finish and you would want to have a break or take a short nap.
The problem with marathon downloads is that the Windows power settings come into play after a definite interval of time. Say you are downloading movies or torrents and the download may take 5-6 hours to finish. You start the download manager but when you return after an hour, you find the computer has been logged off or put to “Sleep”.
That’s when you need tools like Don’t Sleep. It’s a tiny portable application for Windows which temporarily suspends Windows power settings and prevents the system from logging off, restarting, hibernating or going to sleep mode.
The program requires no installation and does not modify Windows registry. It sets temporary rules to override the power plans in Windows so that the downloads can continue without any problem.

You can set the timer in the program options and can turn off Windows screensaver when the system is in idle state.Of course, you can manually change the power plans before starting the downloads and then switch back to normal power plans when the downloads are finished. But those who want to avoid the hassle of opening the control panel and tweaking the Power settings, this freeware does the job well.
Don’t Sleep works with Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows7.
Techie Buzz Verdict
The program is simple to use. I would like to see a timer feature being included – the ability to shut down computer at a specified time of the day. This will save the hassle of using another utility to shut down the computer when the downloads have finished.
Techie Buzz rating: 3/5 (average).
