  • For Developers: Visual Studio 2010 and Silverlight 4.0 launches, brings improved Windows Phone 7 developer tools

logo1 Over the weekend Microsoft has launched the latest iteration of their Visual Studio product, Visual Studio 2010.  Silverlight 4.0 will also be released later this week to the web for download.

The combination brings further improved tools to developers, such as multi-monitor support and better debugging tools.

Windows Phone 7 developers specifically can however expect the ability to more easily create good-looking applications with the built-in integrated phone design surfaces.

Silverlight 4, of which elements exists in the current Windows Phone 7 build,  delivers media and business application capabilities that enable developers to deliver application experiences on or off the Web. New features in Silverlight 4 include extended out-of-browser capabilities, enhancements for enterprise application developers, and more than 60 customizable pre-written controls to quickly build rich, interactive applications.

“We’re excited to celebrate the launch of Visual Studio 2010 with developers around the world today,” said Bob Muglia, president of the Server and Tools Business at Microsoft, in a statement. “Customer and partner feedback was instrumental in shaping this release. The functionality of Visual Studio 2010, .NET Framework 4 and Silverlight 4 creates a powerful and unique combination, opening up new opportunities for developers to build applications that take advantage of new and existing devices, as well as emerging platforms like cloud services.”

Eddie Amos, general manager of developer platform and tools marketing at Microsoft told eWEEK  a key theme for VS2010 was simplicity. "We wanted to be able to allow developers to keep it simple, but dream big," he said, noting that the Microsoft tools story has been consistent for many years. That consistency enables the company to deliver tools and development platforms for developers that allow developers to use what they are familiar with to create applications that can run across a variety of environments — from the cloud to mobile devices.

"A lot of the same components are in place, so developers can leverage the skills they have to build web applications and other types of applications from within Visual Studio," Amos said. "We can enable them to optimize their code for the different platforms."

Microsoft is kicking off a global launch of its flagship application development environment, with more than 150 developer-focused events around the world today.

  • How a Business Can Span the Globe and Stay Close-Knit: Microsoft’s “Telepresence” Project

    Microsoft Research
    Gregory T. Huang wrote:

Stop me if this sounds familiar. You work in a tight-knit team that has one or two colleagues who are located in a different office—across the street, across the state, or across the country. You’d like to communicate with them more regularly, but phone calls, e-mails, and video conferences have to do. Inevitably, you feel like you (and they) miss out on some day-to-day interactions that help all of you stay fully connected to the company’s goals and culture.

Microsoft feels your pain—and its researchers are trying to do something about it. That’s why a group from Microsoft Research, based in Redmond, WA, is presenting a paper tomorrow at CHI 2010, the big international conference on human-computer interaction in Atlanta. The team, led by senior researchers Gina Venolia and John Tang, has developed a prototype system that gives a satellite colleague a “telepresence” not just in meetings but in the daily workflow of the hub office. They pull this trick with basically a laptop, speakerphone, and webcams on a cart, plus software to coordinate it all. Their project is called “Embodied Social Proxy,” or ESP.

OK, it’s a pretty jargony name, but it addresses a real and growing need in companies that have satellite workers or that expand to new geographies. The researchers have tested the prototype in four different product groups at Microsoft in addition to their own research group. They’re reporting that it increased the “attention and affinity” of the hub towards the satellite, and that it improved the interpersonal social connections between team members. (Of course, this might be difficult to quantify—more on that below.)

In this globalized era in which teams are being spread over long distances and “virtual” businesses, a number of tech giants are trying to help companies stay culturally tight-knit as they grow larger. The list includes Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Cisco, and Skype, who have led the way in developing technologies for Web conferencing and remote communications. A whole slew of startups are working in related sectors such as social business software (like Jive in Portland, OR) and online project management (like Smartsheet and LiquidPlanner in the Seattle area). They all share the goal of boosting productivity in the face of complexity. Recently, notable technology and business leaders Kelly Jo MacArthur and Stephen Wolfram have emphasized the importance of remote communications in running an organization.

Embodied Social Proxy (courtesy of Microsoft Research)

The Microsoft project builds on years of social science and communications research. It also seems decidedly old-school and low-tech. That is part of what makes it interesting, as a complement to social-media efforts to improve business collaboration (including Microsoft’s relatively new FUSE Labs led by Lili Cheng). Microsoft’s ESP effort began in 2008 when Venolia and Tang’s colleague, principal researcher George Robertson, a co-author on the study, moved to Maine to work from home. The team decided to test out a system that was “as simple as possible, to fix what was most broken,” Venolia says.

That meant daily interactions and face-to-face contact. So the team assembled a PC, monitor, some decent wide-view cameras, and a speakerphone, and mounted them on a cart that could be wheeled into meeting rooms (see photo above), or left in a dedicated office space that has become Robertson’s de facto “office” in Redmond. In meetings, the Redmond team can see Robertson’s face at the table and hear his voice, and he can interact with people in the room by controlling different cameras that allow him to focus on a particular person, or a whiteboard, or slides. The most interesting thing is …Next Page »

  • Google’s Cambridge Office Assumes Growing Role Inside Search Giant

    Google
    Wade Roush wrote:

If you glanced at the software engineering job listings page for Google Boston, you might think that the company’s Kendall Square office has only two positions open. That would be wrong. Site director Steven Vinter says the office has been hiring aggressively since December.

The growth would have started sooner if it hadn’t been for the recession, which didn’t slow Google’s expansion much, but did seem to engender a kind of constipation in the local software community, with people unwilling to risk leaving their current positions, Vinter says. But conditions have eased and the company is now getting more resumes. In any case, the two positions described on the job page—software engineer and software tester—are just roles, Vinter says. The company is hiring many people to fill each one.

In fact, with more than 100 engineers and 100 business development staff spread across four floors at Five Cambridge Center—space the company occupied in early 2008 after outgrowing its cramped quarters at One Broadway—Google Boston has evolved from a mere outpost of Google’s Bay Area headquarters into a major engineering and sales center. I stopped by a couple of weeks ago to hear the latest about the office’s progress from Vinter, whom I last interviewed in depth way back in November 2007. (At that time, the office had half as many people.)

The main point Vinter made, as you’ll read below, is that Google Boston is now big enough to have what he calls “end-to-end” responsibility for major parts of the Google product lineup, including the Chrome browser and operating system, the YouTube server and client infrastructure, Google Book Search, and the Google Friend Connect social Web service. As Xconomy founder Bob Buderi has argued in his book Engines of Tomorrow and elsewhere, it’s crucial for corporate outposts to have this kind of responsibility and autonomy if they want to avoid becoming marginalized within their own companies. My impression is that Vinter has been working hard to make sure that Google Boston isn’t simply a vehicle for hiring talented New England engineers who don’t want to move to Mountain View, but that it builds teams that have a direct impact on Google’s bottom line and on the problems the company is trying to solve.

Google Boston PosterWith major news about Chrome, Chrome OS, Friend Connect, and other products expected later this year, it’s likely that Google Boston’s profile within the company will keep rising. That may be true within the Kendall Square neighborhood as well: Vinter told me he admires Microsoft’s efforts to open up its New England Research and Development Center for tech-community events, and says he’d like Google to be more active in this area. Here’s a writeup of our conversation.

Xconomy: Other than your big move into the Cambridge Center space, what have been the biggest changes since we had that long talk back in 2007?

Steven Vinter: There are two big things. All throughout 2009 we were looking for more candidates to hire, and the thing we didn’t really understand was why there seemed to be so few people making it into Google. We didn’t understand why we wouldn’t have seen a continuous flow. Looking back, I think there were just a lot of people [who were] really uncomfortable with moving. The economic problems, in the same way that they affected consumer confidence, affected people’s concerns about wanting to go out and try something new. But that just disappeared around the December time frame, and we haven’t seen such an influx of talented people since I arrived here. So the challenge for us now is basically to make sure that the projects we have keep step with the level of the incoming folks.

X: During that lull, were you actually getting fewer resumes, or was it that the quality of the applicants was below what you wanted?

SV: More the former. There were just fewer people in the pipeline. One thing that’s helping is that we are aggressively seeking new college grads here. Obviously there is a huge wealth of talent in Boston, but in previous years I was more concerned about …Next Page »

  • Metro Lockscreen App

With the growing popularity of Windows Phones 7 Series, we are seeing many rendering of this new OS imagepop up in different forms, and this one is a lock screen. This new lock screen does not mimic the slide down function of the WP7S lock screen, but it gives it a WP7S look with a slider similar to the current 6.5 lock screen. The lock screen also features a clock, date, calendar appointments.

What’s new/different compared to the other lockscreen?
    1. hardcoded background picture
    2. left aligned text matching the Metro guidelines by Microsoft
    3. new font "Zegoe" Light and Regular (will be installed with the CAB) matching the Metro design

    A word about requests:
I had many requests via PM for changing alignment/site/whatever of the text. I don’t have the time to do this. But what you can do: post your background picture you want to see within this lockscreen. I’ll change that just for you  Hint: make a screenshot of your device showing the lockscreen and work with Photoshop or similar "over" the layout so your new background doesn’t "interfere" with the text layout.

What should I do if I find an error?
Just post your screenie and I’ll see what I can do

Update 6.4.2010: as requested the lockscreen without background.
New versions online with all notification icons skinned in "Metro-Style"

This lock application can be acquired over at XDA

  • Microsoft promises to fix many Windows Phone 7 limitations “in future releases”

deepzoom2 Tweakers.net have published a lengthy interview with Charlie Kindel, conducted at the Dutch DevDay event recently.

We have distilled a few salient points from there, but reading the whole interview will add a lot more.

Charlie called the cellphone the “new personal computer ", however also mentioned Microsoft still planned to integrate the device with the desktop as part of the “3 screen and a cloud” strategy, which will involve wide synchronization between the 3.

"Much of the activity takes place on the server side. Also applications make extensive use of the server, such as notifications. Most of the features that matter most on the device would require the server. This can also work for saving the battery. "

On Xbox gaming he noted that developers will be able to create Xbox games with Windows Phone 7 versions that could be sold together.  "Whether they do is up to game developers. We are only providing the possibility."

He re-iterated that the user interface will not be widely customizable by OEMs or users, saying Microsoft intended to invest heavily in advertising this brand.

He also said Microsoft intended to release updates itself. “We want everyone the same version of the OS. It is not like thirty versions of your operating system in circulation." he said.

Smaller updates will be over the air, and larger updates will be using the Zune software.

"We will do that through the Zune desktop software or over the air , "said Kindel. "Whichever way we use depends on the size of the update." In practice it will mean that major updates will be installed via the desktop, while the smaller updates are sent directly to your phone.

He noted Windows Phone 7  Release will not be ‘feature complete’: many features will be added later. This is a conscious choice, Kindel said. "What we do, we do extremely well. This is a change from earlier Windows Mobile versions, where we strove for as much possible functionality. Now, some things are missing at launch but the important thing for us is user experience. Everything must work equally well for the unit to work properly. Then we will look at how we can extend that functionality. "

Surprisingly one of the features that will not be available at launch is the ability to extend the hubs.

"In time you can, but for now we focus on other issues," said Kindel.

Despite this (or possibly because of it) he noted that Microsoft is still on track for a release late this year. "When I see where we are today in terms of speed and stability of the OS, I am sure that we get it."

He noted many manufacturers were working on Windows Phone 7 devices, including HTC, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG and Asus.

On applications he again reitterated that these will only be available via Marketplace, but that in future releases facilities will be made available for companies to distribute vertical applications.

"We have in planning for future releases, we are initially concentrating on other matters."

Regarding the managed code sandbox, he noted that over time this will become less and less strict, and that access to native code will just be in very special cases, like with Adobe Flash.

He also noted that multi-tasking is reserved for native app, but that undesirable effects such as losing GPS navigation on a phone call will be addressed in future releases.

"For example if you have an application in the background a GPS position to other applications, can pass, it is required that the application can run in the background. For such scenarios, we build multi-tasking again."

He did not however say when this would be.

He also mentioned nice feature not demonstrated earlier. If when in another application the volume button is pressed, a Zune widget will appear on screen with a Play / Pause button and buttons to move to the previous or next track.

He also revealed while the basic development tools was free there was a more advanced version which was for charge.

One interesting feature of the OS which will help sell applications is carrier billing. Charlie noted this was advantage over the iPhone and even Android, which required the use of credit cards, which in some countries such as the Netherlands, were not very prevalent.

He conceded that Microsoft appeared to be copying Apple in many ways.

"That’s right, in many cases we are following in Apple’s line. We found the user experience provided by Windows Phone 7 required sharp choices. It may be true that some of these choices match those of Apple. At the end of the day it is us both about the user experience of smartphones.

He however was still confident what Windows Phone 7 will quickly gain market share.

"In the past it often happened that we were the underdog in a given market and how to become leaders." He noted "We have a lot of positive feedback from manufacturers, providers and developers. We hope Windows 7 Phone a successful new path."

He would not comment on Microsoft’s response if this turned out not to be the case.

"We believe the mobile market is very important. I can not comment on these questions. Therefore it is too early." Microsoft expects very much of its new mobile OS, says Kindel.

  • Windows Phone 7’s Future… JailBreaking

wp7jailbreak With all the new changes WP7S is bringing, many of them unwanted, we may need to do something to rectify the situation. On the iPhone this is called Jailbreaking, and it is quickly becoming the future for our OS.

There are not just one reason for Jailbreaking the next line of WP7S phones, but many. The problem arises: how easy will it be Jailbreaking our device, because unlike the iPhone, we have some security.

Reason #1 for Jailbreak: Non-Microsoft Approved apps

In the next version of WP, we will not be allowed to install applications that Microsoft did not approve. That means if XDA members make something that is outrageously awesome, we will not be able to install it to our device without it going through Microsoft for their approval.

That new features is the worst, and makes no sense for MS to include… and you know what that means. JAILBREAK!

Reason #2 for Jailbreak: No Multi-Task

Many people (including me) have made fun of the iPhone for this feature, and it seems the table has turned. MS has announced to us that they will not be including Multi Tasking in their next mobile OS. That means you will not have the ability to monitor the accelerometer in the background while reading your e-mail for example.

That means we will need Jailbreaking to bring this back. Microsoft says it will lower performance, but I think it’s for the better.

Reason #3 for Jailbreak: Customizable UI

Customizing UI is one reason I LOVE Windows Mobile, but Microsoft is taking this feature out, and say we do not need it anymore. That statement “We do not need it” is still to be determined, but people like me get bored easily with things that are too simple or do not change, and with this new customizability removed from the OS Windows Phone 7 will be the same throughout, and nothing will separate HTC from Toshiba or any other maker other than hardware that will also be similar. This will also make Windows Mobile less than Android, which has this feature, and it does it very well and slightly easier than Windows Mobile currently does.

This can also be changed with our devices being Jailbroken.

Reason #4 for Jailbreak: File Access

Being able to access our SD card folder is the key to doing many things in Windows Mobile currently, but that will change with WP7. MS is taking this out for… well I do not really know why, but without this features, we will have that much less control of our phones.

This is not really a big reason, but I think it is very important to some.

Reason #5 for Jailbreak: Change System apps

Being able to change something you do not like is a great feature of Windows Mobile, but MS does not want that for Windows Phone either. Many might not understand “changing system hooks”, but most understand changing the default keyboard, dialler, skin, media player, and so on. That means if you do not like the keyboard… tough break, you have no choice in this matter. You do not like the dialler, haha, use your house phone, MS does not care, and they are not a phone carrier.

That feature to me is the most serious, but it is just one of many.

I think when WP7 is released, and these features are not implemented iPhone owners get the right to tease us and make fun of us for a whole day, because these are all things that apple iPhone users can do now and it is sad we will be losing the features. The worst part is, WP7 will have a great security system, so that means we will not easily be able to have a Jailbreak created, which will make life harder for us “Power Users”.

It is clear however that if our readers will be using Windows Phone 7, jailbreaking will certainly be in their future.

  • Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 MR1 update a disaster?

Sony Ericsson Xperia x2 MR 1 disaster

We received this very interesting e-mail from Dominik telling us about his woes with the new Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 MR1 update, which has been lauded for being comprehensive, with many improvements and has even been called “the best update ever”.

It seems everyone spoke well too soon.

    Dominik writes:

Few days after X2 upgrade this is a disaster.

This device is a biggest shame I’ve seen in my life.

Basically this is unpredictable, unstable, unfinished and not proper piece of “crap”. Things randomly keep stopping working, device freezing constantly without any reason. The device has BASIC operation problems like camera not working, memory card not seen by the device – all needing soft resets.

Current behaviour of X2 is like a first firmwares I’ve seen on P990, few years back.

After upgrade I’ve had like 10 freezes through 48 hours.

Freezing without any reason – just with normal, ordinary actions I d, switching panels etc..

The software is completely not optimized at all, looks like a not finished.

I was a fan of SE smartphones (used P800, P910, P990, P1, X1). All of them served well.

As regarding X1 people experiences were very different, but generally feedback was good and deserved.

X2 has huge negative feedback right now and I’m not alone.

What is strange, the device did not behave this way before the update.

Please observe the issue. I think if SE will react ASAP, The information should be widely spread around.

You have to agree – this is just completely unacceptable from such a company!

A quick look at the update thread on Sony Ericsson’s blog, which started of rather optimistically, shows that Dominik is far from alone.

    Jolo writes:

Even with MR1 applied, this phone is useless with this low level of stability and speed. I’m sorry Sony Ericsson but the Software quality of your products is a shame.

    Schaotan on XDA-Developers write:

Like many others, I’m disappointed by the upgrade.
Phone is faster, surely, but random freezes are still occurring. I’m trying to troubleshoot, adapt my phone usage habits to prevent freezes, but its really bothersome and of little to no use.
Probably a brilliant strategy by Sony to get me to spend even more upgrading to the X10. Though why i let myself be repeatedly suckered by Sony is beyond me.

It appears that the MR1 update, while late, was still rushed out without proper testing. leaving even formerly satisfied users very unhappy indeed.

Have any of our readers applied the update? Let us know your experience below.
