  • Gene boosts rice yields

From the current issue of Nature Genetics: Gene improves grain yield in rice

Alleles at the OsSPL14 gene alter rice plant architecture and enhance grain yield in rice, according to two independent studies published online this week in Nature Genetics. In small numbers of test rice plots, favorably altered alleles of OsSPL14 led to approximately a 10% increase in grain yield.
It is thought that crop yields need to double by 2050 in order to adequately feed the world’s growing population. Identification of genetic variants that can enhance crop production is an important approach toward this problem.
The findings from two independent studies by Jiayang Li, Moto Ashikari and their respective colleagues suggest that OsSPL14 may be useful for increasing rice crop production.

  • The Euro’s Sucker Rally Is Being Wiped Out As The IMF Issues An Ugly Report On Spain

The euro is tanking once again, breaking $1.23.

    Chart

The IMF came out with a fresh report on Spain today warning that Spain must make tough reforms to its economy. Yet the nation is at the same time challenged with a weak economic recovery as well, which can make reforms harder to push through.

    IMF:

Spain’s economy needs far-reaching and comprehensive reforms. The challenges are severe: a dysfunctional labor market, the deflating property bubble, a large fiscal deficit, heavy private sector and external indebtedness, anemic productivity growth, weak competitiveness, and a banking sector with pockets of weakness. Ambitious fiscal consolidation is underway, recently reinforced and front-loaded. This needs to be complemented with growth-enhancing structural reforms, building on the progress made on product markets and the housing sector, especially overhauling the labor market. A bold pension reform, along the lines proposed by the government, should be quickly adopted. Consolidation and reform of the banking system needs to be accelerated. Such a comprehensive strategy would be helped by broad political and social support, and time is of the essence.

The euro’s about to wipe out its entire rally from the end of last week, perhaps due to the fact that markets aren’t confident Spain will be able to make the hard reforms mentioned above.

    Chart

Still, the Spanish ten year bond yield is holding steady and actually eased back slightly, to 4.03% according to Bloomberg. So Spanish default isn’t the concern, but the costs to the Eurozone of a Spanish rescue could be.

    future city

Eco Factor: Environmentally friendly future city for China.

Gu Wenda has recently turned to reflect social issues such as environmental protection in his work and is trying to help offer a solution for a sustainable future city. The artist has modeled China Park, a future city that combines traditional Chinese concepts and architectural idea of traditional Chinese gardens.

    future city_2

The China Park has been designed to offer a blueprint for an ecologically friendly future city. The green calligraphy garden will be crafted out of natural evergreen trees, and artificial streams and ponds together form the shapes of Chinese calligraphic characters.

The artist now hopes that someday his blueprint is realized, either in the form of a large-scale public entertainment park or a residential complex.

  • New Porsche Cayenne TV commercial

Porsche Cayenne tv commercial which focuses on the different definitions of the Utility part of SUV. The Cayenne has never seemed particularly Porsche to me, but the success of this vehicle for the company shouldn’t be underestimated. This ad proves just how much Porsche believes (sales considering) that the Cayenne is really part of the family and represents the Porsche brand like any other sports coupé in the lineup. The new Cayenne is an impressive development on the previous generation and should prove every bit as successful.

  • How To Hack Your MagicJack To Make Calls From Any SIP Enabled Softphone in Windows and Linux Part 1 – Getting Your Magicjack Password

Over the last few days I decided I was going to figure out how to hack my Magicjack so I could make calls using the SIP information no matter where I was without having to carry around my Magicjack USB dongle. Also, I wanted to be able to make calls in Linux and Windows. Before I could do any of that though I needed the SIP information for my Magicjack!

You see, Magicjack is really a simple device that uses the standard SIP protocol to make inbound and outbound calls. If you are not familiar with SIP, here is an explanation from Wikipedia:

The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is an IETF-defined signaling protocol, widely used for controlling multimedia communication sessions such as voice and video calls over Internet Protocol (IP). The protocol can be used for creating, modifying and terminating two-party (unicast) or multiparty (multicast) sessions consisting of one or several media streams. The modification can involve changing addresses or ports, inviting more participants, adding or deleting media streams, etc… Other feasible application examples include video conferencing, streaming multimedia distribution, instant messaging, presence information, file transfer and online games.

Since SIP is the standard, in theory you can take the SIP information from Magicjack and use it on any SIP enabled phone. All you need is the correct Proxy info, username and password! That is where things get tricky. Magicjack doesn’t want you having this information, and using it for any other way other than its intended use is a violation of TOS. I accept no liability if you get your account pulled for violating TOS. This post is purely for informational purposes only.

In theory, one could pay $20 per year for their Magicjack service, then use the SIP information to share out their number using a SIP PBX like Asterisk to say… Oh… 30 users or so. Imagine a small business doing this? The savings could be huge! Once again though, it violates TOS so I wouldn’t recommend it.

In order to get your username and password you will need the following:

You will also have to disable autorun on your Windows workstation. I will let you Google that for yourself. The reason you have to do that is because when you plug in your Magicjack dongle, Windows maps it as a USB drive, launches Magicjack, and then unmounts the USB drive. We don’t want it to do that, as timing is everything. After you have autorun disabled do the following:

    1. Unplug your Magicjack
    2. Kill any Magicjack processes
    3. Unzip MagicJack_Utilitieswsip.zip
    4. Navigate to where you unzipped it, and run SIPDump.exe and enter 4 or 5
      sipdump
    5. Now plugin your Magicjack and manually run MagicJackLoader.exe
    6. When you see the below screen, press OK to start the memory dump process from SIPDump.exe (Note, you have to be fast!)
      sipdumppic3
    7. Let the dump run until you see the following screen:
      sipdumppic4
    8. Go ahead and close out of SIPDump, and you will have several text documents called SIPDump1, SIPDump2 etc. Open Each one that has a file size of 19,000KB or over and do a search for the string SIP.Connection.Refresh with the whole word only option selected.
    9. Hit the search button, and then once more. If there are two selections found, then your password should be within 5-10 lines up or down from the string. The password will be a 20 character password all uppercase usually beginning with the letter B. For example: B6QK1RE4HU7QK8P3ABZB (Made up one)

    sipdump7

That is the tricky part. Once you have that, the rest is easy. For example, your username will be the Letter E<YourPhoneNumber>01. The proxy will be proxy01.<yourcity>.talk4free.com. For example:

      • E619123456701
      • proxy01.sandiego.talk4free.com

Tomorrow I will show you how to use this information to use a SIP enabled softphone to make calls in windows without your Magicjack dongle. Then the next day after that, I will show you how to do it in Linux! Stay tuned!

  • Tsubaki SUPER Chains for the Toughest Applications

ANSI standard roller chains are widely used in various industries. To meet the growing demands across all industries for a stronger and higher performing chain that can replace the corresponding ANSI chain, Tsubaki offers a line of SUPER and ULTRA SUPER chains. The ultimate in strength, these chains allow for selection of a smaller size while providing superb resistance to heavy shock loads and other operating issues.

    HT Series:
HT Series chains have a greater ultimate tensile strength (+15-30% more) over ANSI standard roller chains through the use of hardened pins and link plates of the next larger chain size. (Chain dimensions are identical to ANSI Heavy Series standard roller chains.)

    SUPER Series:
Through Tsubaki’s special design and critically formed pitch holes, these chains have the same dimensions as ANSI standard roller chain but with 25-30% greater allowable load. The pins are through hardened for even greater shock load resistance.

    SUPER-H Series:
The thickness of the link plates of SUPER-H Series is the same as that of the next larger size of SUPER Series chains, and the pins are through hardened. This gives SUPER-H Series chains even greater ultimate tensile strength and allowable load than SUPER Series Chains.

    ULTRA SUPER Series
ULTRA SUPER Series chains have 170% of the allowable load of ANSI RS Roller Chain, allowing users to go down two sizes when selection. ULTRA SUPER chains are ideal where heavy shock loads and space poses problems.

Contact Tsubaki today to learn more on how you can get greater confidence for your operations in a more compact space without needing to make major modifications to your existing equipment. Tsubaki – Strength you Can Rely On!

  • Yahoo Buys Indonesian Location-Based Social Network Koprol

    Koprol

No FourSquare deal (at least yet)—but Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) has purchased Koprol, a location-based social network, which has attracted a following in Indonesia. With Koprol, users “check-in” to their current location from their phones and can then see what other users are nearby; members can also start discussions and review the establishments they are visiting.

The site is currently active in about 200 cities in Indonesia—but Yahoo says in a statement it will now expand the service to “new markets.” The company also says it will use information shared on Koprol to “make its properties and applications … more locally relevant.”

The deal comes as Yahoo—which has said for a year now that it is interested in making social networking-related acquisitions—has also been reportedly considering making a bid for U.S.-based “check-in” service FourSquare. In early April, Yahoo had been said to be close to offering as much as $100 million for that startup, although chatter has since died down.

No financial terms of the Koprol deal were released.
