  • Choices: Yes, Yogurts Can Be Made Without Cow Milk

    Wholefoods_wallofyogurt

Before I was diagnosed with the cow milk allergy, it never dawned on me that yogurts can be made with milks other than from a cow. I mean, if you live in the U.S. and can eat whatever dairy you want, why would it even occur to you other than health reasons or a friend/family member told you about it, to think of non-cow milk yogurts?

What I’m getting at is how much the cow dominates our eating culture. Don’t get me wrong, I love the cow, and miss its milk dearly, but for many of us, milk does not do our body good, so we need choices.

When it comes to yogurt, one of the things I love about Whole Foods is that they offer a plethora of non-cow milk yogurt choices. In this picture, here is the wall of yogurt at my local Whole Foods. Pretty amazing!

So, just to shed some light, here are some other milks that are used to make yogurt:

    • Soy
    • Rice
    • Coconut
    • Arrowroot
    • Sheep
    • Goat
    • Nut (cashew, almond, hazelnut. macademia)

Basically, you can take any type of milk and turn it into a yogurt. Here’s a simple recipe to make nut milk based yogurts at home. Arrowroot is a new non-cow milk yogurt I’ve seen through the brand Nogurt.

    Yogurt_coconut

I will point out though that the taste and experience of non-cow milk yogurts is a whole other story. I’ve tried all of the above yogurts except nut and Arrowroot. Of the yogurts I’ve tried, the coconut milk based yogurts made by So Delicious brand are by far the best. In fact, the So Delicious yogurt is so important to me that I’ve listed it as one of, “10 Things in Steph’s Healthy Kitchen.”

I avoid soy as much as possible because it affects my metabolism. Rice milk yogurts tend to be on the watery side and not as flavorful. Goat and Sheep taste too barnyardy for me.

Your palate may be different, so I recommend you try any of the yogurts listed above. I highly encourage experimenting. If anything, trying out a new yogurt would be an interesting conversation topic.

So, what is your favorite non-cow milk yogurt?

Google executives are wrestling over whether to launch controversial facial recognition technology after a barrage of criticism over its privacy policies.

Eric Schmidt, chief executive, said a series of public disputes over privacy issues had caused the management team to review its procedures and the launch of new technologies. According to Google executives, facial recognition is one of the key topics of internal debate.

Mr Schmidt said: “Facial recognition is a good example?.?.?.?anything we did in that area would be highly, highly planned, discussed and reviewed. When you go through these things, you review your management procedures.”

However, he would not rule out any eventual roll-out, saying: “It is important that we continue to innovate.”

  • InsideTrip Goes Mainstream, Rates Itinerary Quality, Provides Broad Lessons in Online Travel

    InsideTrip
    Gregory T. Huang wrote:

Think about the last time you flew anywhere. How would you rate the overall experience? Unless you’re a bird, there were probably things that could have been a lot better—legroom, connection time, delays, quality of service, and so on. In fact, the general level of misery in air travel feels like it’s always going up.

But when you made your last travel reservation, your decision was probably based on price more than any other factor, with connections and seat assignments as secondary considerations. The question is, would you want more information about the flights themselves before you book them, if it were available?

That’s what entrepreneur Dave Pelter is currently exploring with his Seattle-based online travel startup, InsideTrip. The company rates each flight based on 12 metrics, such as the age and type of plane, baggage handling record, on-time record, and how crowded it is. For Pelter, it all boils down to one thing: “Do people care about quality?” he asks.

InsideTrip is part of a new wave of technologies and business models in online travel. It’s not too surprising that Seattle would be a leader in the sector, since this is the backyard of Expedia (which includes TripAdvisor and SeatGuru), Farecast (now part of Microsoft’s Bing Travel), and numerous smaller companies like Yapta and Raveable. Maybe it’s because of the combination of a strong tech community and lousy weather.

Indeed, several travel startups have been bubbling up around town lately. The newest ones aren’t talking publicly yet about what they’re up to. But they have attracted some interesting players. One of them, TravelPost, was founded by former Expedia execs and backed by Ignition Partners and General Catalyst. Another, Off & Away, is being incubated by Madrona Venture Group.

Unlike those startups, InsideTrip is ready to talk about what it’s doing. Pelter, a former airline executive and Farecast vice president, sat down with me recently to chat about his company, where it’s headed, and how it fits into the broader story of online travel businesses. As of today, InsideTrip has officially emerged from beta testing mode and is opening its consumer website to the general public. It is also in the process of raising money and signing up new partners and customers for other parts of its business.

This isn’t the first we’ve heard of InsideTrip. Pelter rolled out the beta version of his website back in March 2008 and got a fair amount of national press. And just last month, he pitched InsideTrip to investors at the “First Look Forum” organized by the Northwest Entrepreneur Network in Seattle—and won as the audience favorite.

But to fully appreciate what InsideTrip is doing, you need to know Pelter’s background. …Next Page »

  • And Now Pakistan Bans YouTube Again… Let’s Hope It Doesn’t Take Down Half The Internet This Time

So, just yesterday we wrote about Pakistan’s decision to block all of Facebook, because some users had set up a page for “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!” (in response to the threats made to Comedy Central concerning an episode of South Park). Originally, just that one page had been banned, but apparently that wasn’t enough, and a court ordered the entire site should be banned for allowing that sort of content to appear. In response, I asked if Pakistan would ban the internet if a page was put up advocating the same thing. It looks like the country may be trying to ban services one-by-one.

Now it’s been announced that Pakistan is blocking access to YouTube over the same issue. Of course, Pakistan tried to block YouTube a few years ago, and it ended up taking down a large chunk of the internet — so hopefully this time they’ve come up with a more sophisticated way of doing this. In the meantime, though, I’m still at a loss for how completely banning a site makes sense here, but it appears my original post somehow is being spread around Pakistan, because starting not so long ago there was a sudden rush of comments coming from people in Pakistan, defending the blocking decisions. Given that, how long until Techdirt gets blocked as well?

  • Honda’s Hydrogen Sport Car Concept

Green was the theme at the LA Auto Show as car manufacturers revealed a whole new line of hybrid, electric, and fuel efficient new cars… but none of them were as stylish as Hondas’s FC Sport Concept Car.

The futuristic sports car is a hydrogen powered, zero emission fuel cell supercar. The three seater is lightweight with a low center of gravity and features a powerful electric motor that helps it deliver supercar performance.

The eye catching, futuristic design of the car is meant to excite fans of sports cars, not just eco friendly motorists, and its a glimpse at what car design might look like in a post gas engine world.

Honda’s FC Sport is only a concept car, and there are currently no plans to enter this zero emission design study model into actual production anytime soon.

But the fact that Honda could imagine such a fast, sexy, and green zero emissions hydrogen vehicle means it shouldn’t be long before all the major car companies start building similar vehicles.

According to Top Gear, in 2008, 30 litres of hydrogen costs roughly the same as 30 litres of gasoline in California.

Also, the FCX Clarity’s power plant is much simpler than an internal combustion engine, so it does not need to be serviced as often!

  • Feds Move to Throw Pot Smokers in Prison for Impaired Driving

Did you smoke pot last month and drive a car this morning? Obama wants to arrest and incarcerate you.

If you smoked marijuana last week or even last month and you drive a car, you may be sent to prison under new guidelines drafted by the federal government.

The Obama administration released its National Drug Control Strategy guidelines last week. The federal government wants all of the states to adopt its authoritarian and draconian diktat and expand the drug war. From the guidelines:

Encourage States To Adopt Per Se Drug Impairment Laws [ONDCP]. State laws regarding impaired driving are varied, but most State codes do not contain a separate offense for driving under the influence of drugs (DUID). Therefore, few drivers are identified, prosecuted, or convicted for DUID. Law enforcement personnel usually cite individuals with the easier to prove driving while intoxicated (DWI) alcohol charges. Unclear laws provide vague signals both to drivers and to law enforcement, thereby minimizing the possible preventive benefit of DUID statutes. Fifteen states have passed laws clarifying that the presence of any illegal drug in a driver’s body is per se evidence of impaired driving. ONDCP will work to expand the use of this standard to other states and explore other ways to increase the enforcement of existing DUID laws.

Cannabis metabolites can remain detectable in the urine for up to 100 days or longer for a regular cannabis consumer and up to fifteen days for the casual consumer, according to NORML, the marijuana advocacy organization. In other words, even if a pot smoker is conscientious and does not drive while intoxicated, that person can be arrested and convicted for DUID days or weeks after consuming marijuana. It would not matter if you are sober as a teetotaler — if THC molecules are detected with a urine or blood test, you are probably going to prison. You can kiss the right to vote and own a firearm sayonara.

In 2007 there were 14.5 million current users of marijuana in the United States, compared with 14.6 million in 2002, while the number of Americans who have used marijuana increased.

The following states enforce “zero tolerance” draconian DUID laws:

Arizona: Zero tolerance for cannabis metabolites, mandatory 24 hours jail, up to 6 months upon conviction.
Delaware: Zero tolerance for cannabis metabolites.
Georgia: Zero tolerance for cannabis metabolites, mandatory 24 hours jail, up to 12 months upon conviction.
Illinois: Zero tolerance for cannabis metabolites, up to 12 moths upon conviction.
Indiana: Zero tolerance for cannabis metabolites, up to 60 days upon conviction.
Michigan: Zero tolerance for cannabis metabolites, up to 93 days upon conviction, vehicle immobilization for up to 180 days.
Nevada: 15 ng/ml for cannabis metabolites.
Ohio: 15 ng/ml for cannabis metabolites, mandatory 72 hours in jail, up to 6 months upon conviction, 6 month to 3 year license suspension.
Pennsylvania: DUID for cannabis metabolites, amount unclear.
South Dakota: Zero tolerance for cannabis metabolites for persons under the age of 21.
Utah: Zero tolerance for cannabis metabolites, mandatory 48 hours jail, up to 6 months upon conviction.

Feds Move to Throw Pot Smokers in Prison for Impaired Driving 150410banner1

Obama’s new guidelines will criminalize and add to the system hundreds of thousands of people and add thousands of people to the prison industry slave labor complex. In 2007 an American was arrested on marijuana charges every 36 seconds. Obama will increase this criminalization rate significantly.

DUI checkpoints are on the rise around the country. In California, for instance, the state increased grants in 2009 by 47% for DUI checkpoints, including “roving” DUI patrols. 2010 was predicted to be “the year of the Checkpoint” in California. In California and elsewhere, these unconstitutional checkpoints are a highly profitable business for the state, netting billions of dollars every year.

Behavioral impairment is not the issue. Expanding the criminal class is the issue. Government will never rest until it categorizes most of us as criminals.

There has been much speculation and curiosity about the new Mercedes-Benz ML-Class, so you will glad to know that today we have a batch of new photos of it and its interior. As you can see for yourself, the wheelbase looks more or less the same, while the body seems a little bit smaller than its predecessor. According to some a diesel-electric hybrid ML-Class is under development, but we can almost be sure that the model will be equipped with a gasoline-electric hybrid similar to the one powering the new ML450 Hybrid.

A lot of questions, speculation, and discussion has started since the announcement of this new version and according to our sources a plug-in variant of the ML hybrid is in the offing, featuring an 80-horsepower electric engine paired with a twin-turbocharged and direct-injection 3.5-liter V-6 and capable of travelling up to 18-miles on electric power alone. • Windows Mobile community raises $1400 in 14 hours for possible WP7 HTC HD2 port

HTC HD2 Windows Phone-7 Series port

We joined the appeal yesterday to raise money for the purchase of essential equipment for XDA-Developers hacker and moderator Da_G to further his investigations and development of the HTC Mondrian ROM, and we are happy to report the community has responded tremendously to the request for donations.

In fact, in what is possibly the fastest fund raising event in Windows Mobile history ever, the whole amount of $14000 was raised in only 14 hours, meaning Da_G can now get on with purchasing the needed HTC HD2 and the Trace analyzer to get access to the JTAG (all of which is way over my head).

While this opens up the possibility of a Windows Phone 7 port to the HTC HD2, I am much more heartened by the response of the community itself to the challenge, which makes me proud to be a Windows Mobile user.

For the latest progress of the hacking event, follow this XDA-Developers thread here.

  • Optical sensors for velocity measurement in wind turbines

OPTIPACT sensors from INTACTON for velocity measurement in wind turbines are a non-contact, maintenance-free alternative to rotary encoders and proximity switches. These solutions, which have been used primarily until now, have proven susceptible to errors and to require high maintenance – moreover, their mechanical integration is very complex. Since the easy-to-install, cost-efficient OPTIPACT systems drastically decrease installation and maintenance efforts, even the redundant installation of two units is economically sound. The signals are ideally suited for speed control and improve efficiency over conventional systems in most cases.

OPTIPACT sensors analyze moving surfaces and feed the control system with the resultant data. Their operating principle is based on the correlation method which enables detection and tracing of characteristic structures within the field of view. In wind turbines, OPTIPACT sensors are installed in a stationary posi-tion with the integrated 2D camera focusing any moving surface. The signal generated from the measured data corresponds to that of an incremental en-coder. By means of a reference mark on the hub, OPTIPACT can monitor not only the revolutions per minute but also the rotary position of the hub – this additional information can be used for monitoring the revolutions and to position the rotor.

OPTIPACT sensors consist of an LED illumination unit, a 2D camera, transmit-ting and receiving optics, and integrated analysis and interface electronics. Measuring 98 x 42 x 47 mm and weighing merely 250 grams, the units can be easily integrated into almost any application. The sensors are housed in an IP65-protected aluminum enclosure. An incremental interface and an RS232 interface are available for communication with higher-level PLCs. INTACTON implements fieldbus systems or an SSI interface on request.

WASHINGTON–President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama hosted a splashy, elegant state dinner Wednesday night for Mexico President Felipe Calderon and his wife, Margarita Zavala, and Chicago Olympic speed skater Shani Davis was on the invite list.

“I am just proud to be here,” said Davis. Each guest can bring a guest, and Davis picked short track coach Jae Su Chun. Davis was wearing a Ralph Lauren suit and a light green tie he bought at Men’s Wearhouse in Skokie.

State Sen. Iris Martinez (D-Chicago) served with Obama when he was in the Illinois state Senate and she said as she walked into the dinner, “I am just really honored, really happy and honored to be here with my former colleague.”

The dinner menu was created in part by guest chef Rick Bayless, founder of Chicago’s Frontera Grill and Topolobampo, which had been a regular stop for Mrs. Obama when she lived in Chicago. The four-course meal featured Oregon Wagyu beef in Oaxacan black mole as the entree.
state dinner plate.jpegState Dinner place setting (photo by Lynn Sweet)

The second state dinner of the Obama administration brought together 200 guests in the ornate East Room for dinner, seated at round and rectangle tables with tablecloths in three hues of Mayan blue. The color scheme, the White House said, was supposed to resemble “ripples of water.”

Another 100 were invited for dessert and entertainment in a magnificent temporary structure built on the far end of the South Lawn, decorated as a very, very ritzy nightclub, complete with a stage, places to dance, dessert bars and stunning floral arrangements. Star singer Beyonce performed as well as Rodrigo y Gabriela and the U.S. Marine Band. Glorious Monarch butterfly decorations hung from the ceiling.

The Monarchs migrate between Mexico and Canada, passing through the United States, and were the perfect symbol of the cross-border relationship that Calderon and Obama want to develop. The Monarchs migrate from Michoacan, Calderon’s birthplace.

The visit comes as the controversial immigration issue has gotten hotter with the new Arizona law that allows local law enforcement authorities to ask people for papers to show they are in the United States legally.

The guest list included a hefty helping of celebrities. Actress Eva Longoria Parker, speaking to reporters in the White House, said that with the Arizona law, the dinner happened to be well-timed “because of the temperature regarding immigration reform. … It’s a hot button issue … so much reform is needed. Immigration is a federal issue,” she said, “and you can’t have states” doing their own laws.

Comic George Lopez had a great wisecrack when he entered. “I’m sitting with the president. They didn’t tell me which country.”

For comedian Whoopi Goldberg — who used to be in the White House “quite a bit,” she said, in the Clinton years — returning after eight years was “kind of like a homecoming after a long drought.”

The Obamas’ first state dinner, for the prime minister of India last year, was overshadowed by party crashers; right after the event, security was tightened for people attending White House social events. Martinez said she passed through three or four checkpoints. No crashers surfaced.
