Mercedes' refined and practical Shooting Break Concept

Mercedes is to show an interesting four-door coupe concept car at the world’s most important motor show, Auto China 2010. Dubbed the “Shooting Break Concept”, it’s part Estate Car and part sports car with extra luggage. It has a sloping tail end, highly practical interior layout and 306 bhp direct injection V6 petrol engine. For all the innovation, it’s the machine’s dynamic full LED headlamps, due for series production this year, which are the stars. The Intelligent Light System has five functions – country lights, motorway lights, enhanced fog lights, active curve lights and cornering lights – and combines LED technology with Adaptive Highbeam Assist for the first time, leading to a completely new level of safety at night…

  • Flexible Office Furniture

POOLE, England, April 19 /CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM/ — Selecting office furniture that is flexible has the potential to save an organisation money, maximise use of space and make the work environment more efficient.

The dynamic work environment of today often requires work spaces to be adaptable. Allowing work stations to be easily rearranged for meetings, to accommodate new staff members and to make space for new pieces of technology are just some of the reasons why this is important.

Organisations with a high staff turnover will also benefit from flexible office furnitureOffice chairs and desks that can be effortlessly moved around or ‘resized’ will enable a seamless handover between old and new employees.

Try buying office desks on casters or wheels for ease of movement – allowing instant rearrangement of an office layout for meetings or to accommodate new staff.

Ergonomic office chairs are a great investment for businesses with high staff turnover – these chairs can easily be adjusted for the comfort of new staff members in a few minutes. The clever features will also ensure your new staff members are not moaning about back pain or other aches and strains.

  • Geothermal energy feels the heat

The Business Spectator has an update on the geothermal energy sector in Australia – A clean energy source feels the heat.

Has a cloud of steam ever generated as much excitement as the vaporised water that emerged from the Panax Geothermal’s Salamander well in South Australia last Thursday?

“Those are beautiful pictures,” said one geothermal company executive as photos were distributed by Panax in its announcement to the ASX. “It will warm the cockles of the hearts of all the geothermal energy producers.”

The geothermal industry has been having a tough time of late. A technology with pretensions to displace the fossil-fuel energy industry finds itself at its lowest ebb: an unexplained end to government funding, a lack of interest from institutional and other investors, delays in drilling programs and technical problems at Geodynamic have combined to send the share prices of most listed geothermal companies to one or two year lows.

Worse than that, it has shaken the conviction of many that geothermal can deliver on its promise of relatively cheap, emissions free baseload energy that could power Australia’s energy many times over if just one per cent of its resources are tapped.

Which is why all eyes are focused on the results of drilling at the Salamander well. The significance of the steam, says Panax CEO Bertus de Graaf, is that it is proof that the company has found a reservoir of energy, the first in a hot sedimentary aquifer in Australia. “What we don’t know yet is the quality of the reservoir,” de Graaf says. …

If Panax can prove it has an economically viable reserve of energy and can set in train plans to connect an initial 5.9MW plant to the grid by the end of 2011, then it may convince the government to inject more funds into the industry, which is currently slated to receive less than a tenth of that promised to carbon capture and storage projects, and less than one sixth promised to large scale solar – even though Energy Minister Martin Ferguson likes to talk up its potential.

This approach has flummoxed many observers, but there are signs that Ferguson may be considering supplementary funding. He was a recent visitor to the Penola project and admitted that Australia would be hard pushed to even meet its 20 per cent renewable target by 2020 without a major contribution from geothermal.

But right now, many geothermal companies cannot access funds to drill their first well, most are running short on cash, and some, such as Petratherm, which is benefiting from a $63 million grant for its Paralana project, is tapping shareholders for the second time in a year.

Real Estate Experts of Costa Rica will help Champion Costa Rica’s easy retirement life at ‘First Latin America Global Medicine & Wellness Conference’

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica, April 20 /CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM/ — The Costa Rican government will formally present and co-host on April 26 to 28 in San Jose,  the First Latin America Global Medicine & Wellness expo. • BMW integrates a 5 kW fuel cell in new hybride 1 series.

BMW’s Forschung und Technik GmbH celebrates its silver anniversary and revealed the fuel cell hybrid 1 series concept. BMW has been working on hydrogen-fueled vehicles since at least the mid-1990s, mostly focussing on the use of liquid hydrogen in  internal combustionengines  rather than fuel cell electric vehicles.  This new concept is a through-the-road hybrid that uses both a small gasoline engine and a small five-kilowatt fuel cell  powering super capacitors driving the 82 kW electro motor.  An inline-four gasoline engine is transversely mounted and drives the front wheels. The UTC  fuel cell, which is developed from one that BMW has been testing mainly as an auxiliary power unit to generate the electricity needed for the car, is mounted behind the engine. This fuel cell is used to charge the super-caps, which also store energy from regenerative braking.
The electric drive can be used on its own for low-speed urban driving or combined with the engine for on-demand all-wheel drive and acceleration. At highway speeds, the engine provides primary drive. We don’t know if this concept drivetrain will go anywhere or if BMW will persist with the super-caps or switch to lithium ion batteries. BMW hasn’t revealed any details about electric driving range or performance.

  • Rockford principals like streamlined teacher hiring

Principals say an all-day job interview event for Rockford School District teacher candidates will streamline the hiring process and should benefit job candidates.

Nine hours are set aside at Guilford High School Saturday for principals to interview candidates for about 300 open teacher positions for the fall. Principals are firming up their list of interviewees this week. School secretaries are also fielding calls from candidates and balancing schedules.

    Changing roles
The district’s human resources staff, unlike previous years, is playing a less significant role in the process. Principals — not central office staff — will largely be responsible for narrowing the field of candidates and choosing whom to interview.

Applicants can interview for multiple positions Saturday, provided they’ve been selected by principals for an interview. That could allow applicants to set up their day so they’re finished in the morning or just have an afternoon of interviews.

“If I was being interviewed, I would like it that way,” said Theresa Harvey, principal at Lewis Lemon Elementary School.

In previous years, if a teacher wanted to interview for jobs at East and Jefferson high schools and Flinn and Kennedy middle schools, for example, that teacher would have to drive to each site and interview at different times and dates. Principals would interview candidates over a few weeks.

Harvey plans to interview candidates for about six openings and, like other principals, may need time beyond Saturday to conduct further interviews.

    ‘One-stop shopping’
Regardless, incoming East High School Principal Todd France agrees with Harvey that the process this year will be better for applicants.

“This is one-stop shopping,” France said. “Time management-wise, for the teachers, it’s going to be easier.”

France, who is now principal at Flinn, will work double duty, interviewing teachers to work at East and keeping an eye on candidates vying for jobs at Flinn.

Applicants are looking for teacher jobs anywhere they can as Illinois struggles to make aid payments to school districts. France said he’s noticing applicants are hailing from Beloit, Wis., the Harlem School District, South Beloit, Sterling, Naperville and even St. Charles.

    Some not qualified
France has about 20 open positions at East, and one has already attracted 39 applicants. It’s unlikely, though, that all of them will be interviewed, he said, because some aren’t qualified.

France and other principals are weeding out unqualified applicants through a prescreening process with the Illinois State Board of Education.

Five assistant principals will help France conduct the East interviews. So far, he said, at least 35 to 40 candidates are planning to interview Saturday for the nearly 20 open positions.

About 30 people are scheduled to interview for up to 14 jobs at Flinn.

“It’s a busy day,” he said. “But the volume that I am seeing at Flinn is basically the same” as last year.

Two categories of tenured teachers will receive priority placement this fall, though they must still go through the interview process: surplus teachers — those who were dismissed from their position and guaranteed a job in the fall — and those who elect to transfer to another job within the district.

No priority will be given to nontenured teachers who were let go from the district last month.
“Everybody is considered ‘new,’ ” France said.

    Complete Chaos 1.2

In 2007… A terrorist organization who called themselves Society sought to unleash total chaos on Earth. After retrieving the three Chaos Stones, they quickly put their plan into motion, releasing a deadly entity, Zeke Marshall, in the process. After attempting to create a new world using the stones´ powers, Zeke was defeated by the Celestial Prince and his eleven companions. Zeke was destroyed, Society disbanded, the world returned to normal, and the Chaos Stones were never seen again…

    TEN YEARS LATER…

Jazz Singer Kyon Lei Kwon has come to Rodger City for help after being stalked by a mysterious foe who calls himself “Face.” Chep Myers instructs his best officer, Eric Ventura, to guard and protect her. This mission takes a turn for the worst when Face crashes the scene and attacks Eric with one of his demons. While unconscious, Eric hears a mysterious voice that greats him magical ability and a sword, both of Relman origin, and tells him to “protect the Princess.”

Eric uses this to save the singer, but his mission is far from over. He soon learns of the Twelve Demons of Chaos, a group of vicious beasts who terrorized the Realm dimension. Their combined strength created the original chaos stones and after losing the war to Celestia, they fled to Earth, where they thought they would be safe. After the events of ten years ago, the stones broke apart and separated, entering twelve human bodies, where they lie dormant…waiting for the moment where they are able to regain their full power once again.

Eric and Face both race to find the twelve demons, but the battle lines aren´t entirely clear once motives become clear and manipulation sweeps in. Can Eric and his friends follow this voice that has been guiding them, or does the voice have a mind of its own? Will Face succeed in retrieving all twelve demons, and what does he plan to do with them? Furthermore, how will the emergence of “Unity” come into play? This is war between Earth, Realm, Celestia, and dimensions all over… This is Complete Chaos!

  • Knight Launches Oasis Small- and Mid-Cap Algorithm for European Equities

JERSEY CITY, N.J. and LONDON, April 20 /CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM/ – Knight Capital Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: NITE) today announced the launch of Oasis, a smart order execution algorithm that sources small- and mid-cap liquidity, for European equities.

Oasis uses innovative logic to source liquidity in thin and difficult-to-trade names with increased efficiency and opportunities for price improvement as well as greater fulfilment. The strategy evaluates liquidity, volatility, price trend, momentum and other characteristics in real time to determine the best sources of liquidity to help minimize market impact. Oasis also includes anti-gaming procedures such as continuous monitoring for adverse trading behaviour to further help minimize information leakage.

“Knight does not subscribe to a one-size-fits-all approach. That philosophy has led Knight to become an innovator in creating new categories of algorithms, including situation-specific algorithms like Oasis,” said Bradley Duke, Managing Director at Knight. “Higher volatility, reduced liquidity and wider spreads are just a few of the challenges associated with trading small- and mid-cap stocks. Knight has deep expertise in these often thinly traded names as well as in the complexities of trading across the fragmented European marketplace.”

Oasis is a new addition to Knight’s Algorithmic Suite for European equities. The algorithms are powered by FAN™, a smart order execution algorithm which sources liquidity from multiple exchange and MTF destinations simultaneously while adapting to market conditions in real time and re-circulating orders to where executions are occurring.

Oasis and Knight’s entire Algorithmic Suite are accessed through Knight Direct, Knight’s multi-asset class execution management system, as well as through a number of third-party execution and order management systems via Knight Direct’s FIX capabilities. To  learn more about Knight’s European algorithmic offering, please contact Bradley Duke at +44 20 7997 7818 or [email protected].

  • The Minister for coal out of step with climate change action

Crikey has an article on a chat between the “minister for coal” (Martin Ferguson) and some climate change campaigners – Minister for coal out of step with climate change action.

Martin Ferguson holds the eminently safe but greening Victorian seat of Batman. A couple of weekends earlier, an Earth Hour demonstration at his Preston office had called on the champion of emissions-intensive fossil fuel exports and power generation to switch to renewables. Australia is heavily dependent on coal for its domestic energy supply, and is the world’s largest coal exporter.

Now Ferguson was sitting across the table from us, a minder scribbling quietly beside him. He said the Government would take the emissions trading scheme to the Senate again in May, but it would fail and Labor would face the next election without a price on carbon.

What of the Greens’ proposal for an interim, two-year carbon tax? Ferguson offered two main objections: a lack of certainty for business, and the blunt statement that there would “never be a settlement” with the Greens on this issue.

While some business uncertainty is surely a reasonable price to avoid the certainty of climate impacts, Ferguson’s blanket exclusion of a climate settlement seems at odds with claimed negotiations between climate change minister Senator Penny Wong and Greens Senator Christine Milne. In the week following our meeting, in fact, The Age quoted Greens leader Bob Brown as being “in a mood to do a deal” on the ETS.

Nothing, however, would be good enough for the Greens, Ferguson claimed – climate change was, for them, a political question, while for Labor it was an economic and environmental one. He had no reply to the argument that the Greens would be hard-pressed to reject for political motives any plan that actually reflected the climate science, in stark contrast with the measures currently proposed by Labor.

While there was some enthusiasm when the talk switched to renewables, Ferguson said coal “would be with us for both our lifetimes”, with no option, it seemed, to leave it in the ground – an imperative of the strongest current science on solving the climate crisis.

He asserted, instead, that carbon capture and storage (CCS) was a “proven technology”, challenged only by the “cost of deployment”. This contrasted with large-scale concentrated solar thermal (CST) technologies already working in Spain and the United States. Solar, according to Ferguson, needed to be “proved up”.

Yet for James Hansen, the world’s leading climate scientist, clean coal is an “illusion”. In September 2009, ABC TV Four Corners also questioned the beleaguered technology in its program. A few days after our meeting, it also aired ‘A Dirty Business’, a program exposing the health and environmental impacts of coal mining in the NSW Hunter valley. Without the elusive prospect of CCS, coal is more than twice as carbon-intensive as gas, which itself is more than 30 times more carbon-intensive than CST.

Despite the profound challenges of such a massively carbon-intensive energy source, the Government’s current ETS proposal includes $1.5 billion compensation for the coal industry and $7.3 billion for fossil-fuel electricity generators. To these billions of public funds can be added the slated $47-billion, five-year investment in an obsolete power grid that, according to Fairfax green business writer Paddy Manning, “entrenches electricity generation from fossil fuels and will only accelerate climate change”.

Though disagreeing with Manning’s analysis, Ferguson admitted that $100 billion would likely be needed “just to keep where we are” with the current power network – more than a Zero Carbon Australia 2020 plan would spend over 10 years ($92 billion) towards a renewables-friendly smart grid.

Strangely, Ferguson seemed also to draw support for his multi-billion-dollar fossil-fuel grid from evidence at the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission about the role of faulty power lines in the Black Saturday fires. A safe grid is, of course, a necessity, but one geared to fossil fuels would only promote global warming and a consequent worsening of bushfire risk in Australia.

  • Five Things Entrepreneurs and Innovators in Michigan Can Do to Reinvigorate Our Regional Economy

    Randal Charlton wrote:

    1. Reinforce success — Our research and development ranks second in the nation behind Delaware, in part because of the massive amount of research done by the auto industry. In spite of the current problems, this research has allowed Detroit to lead the auto industry for almost 100 years. A great deal of this research has application in non-automotive sectors. We need to access it.

    2. Focus on our strengths — Detroit is on the border of another country and 20% of the world’s fresh water. By focusing on its unique location and assets, it has an opportunity to become a leader in certain business areas such as water purification and use technology, homeland security, and international trade, including logistics.

    3. Develop a package of support systems for new entrepreneurs that can be scaled and replicated throughout the region — Throughout the world there is recognition that business incubators can dramatically improve the chances of new business success. We need to figure out the right combination of services—and the ways in which those services can be delivered to the maximum number of pre-qualified potential entrepreneurs.

    4. Alter the culture within universities — Universities, particularly research departments, have to be recognized for the value they bring through the transfer of intellectual property to locally established companies. Tech transfer departments have to become entrepreneurial in their approach to speeding technology from the lab to the marketplace.

    5. Identify early stage finance for startups — Without early-stage financing new business activity will not happen. We need dedicated funds that make bets on early-stage enterprises and move companies to the point where they can qualify for more traditional financial support from venture capitalists, angel investors, and banks.

[Editor’s note: To help launch Xconomy Detroit, we’ve queried our network of Xconomists and other innovation leaders around the country for their list of the most important things that entrepreneurs and innovators in Michigan can do to reinvigorate their regional economy.]

  • Pop Culture Icons Erik Estrada, Lou Ferrigno and Charisma Carpenter Form Butterfinger Defense League (BFDL)

Rapper Sir Mix-A-Lot Lends a Finger on the Turntable with Limited-Edition Music Video and Remix of “Baby Got It Back/I Like Big Butterfingers”

GLENDALE, Calif., April 20 /CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM/ — Responding to the reported epidemic of Butterfinger® bar thefts nationwide, pop culture icons Erik Estrada, Lou Ferrigno and Charisma Carpenter, known in the TV world as famous defenders, have joined forces to create the Butterfinger Defense League, announced today by Nestle USA. The celebrities formed the defense league (ButterfingerDefenseLeague.com) after connecting through the Butterfinger Bar Insurance program, where consumers reported more than 20,000 stories of Butterfinger thefts and filed 100,000 claims online for replacement bars.

Working together to help consumers defend their bars from would-be thieves and to encourage the “Nobody’s Gonna Lay A Finger On My Butterfinger!” tagline-turned-mantra, the Butterfinger Defense League makes its official debut today in an exclusive music video and song remix by iconic rapper Sir Mix-A-Lot.

“The Butterfinger Defense League was formed to inspire and help consumers protect their favorite candy bar from anyone who tries to lay a finger,” said Nestle USA Confections & Snacks spokesperson Tricia Bowles. “Not only are Erik, Lou and Charisma perfect pop culture personalities for our brand but they’re also iconic defenders, who understand the desire for Butterfinger and how to best protect it for millions of fans across the country.”

The defense-ready stars from popular TV shows spanning the last three decades appear in the remixed video titled “Baby Got It Back/I Like Big Butterfingers” with Sir Mix-A-Lot, who performs the irreverently updated rap song as Estrada, Ferrigno and Carpenter strut their stuff and sing along. In the limited-edition music video, the league members also demonstrate some of their classic defense mechanisms and moves to protect Butterfinger.

“Each of us brings something special yet significant to the BFDL, whether strength, sass or sheer sexiness,” said pop culture icon Estrada, who described his signature Butterfinger defense move as the ‘Sexstrada’ approach, having been once named among the “Top 10 Sexiest Bachelors in the World” by People magazine. “Even charm and sex-appeal can be key tools in helping to defend a valuable possession like Butterfinger.”

With the combined forces of Estrada, known as a defender against crime, Ferrigno, known as a defender against evil masterminds, and Carpenter, known as a defender against the supernatural, the Butterfinger Defense League is the ultimate league of protectors best positioned to help consumers defend their favorite candy bar from would-be thieves.

“I’m known for my bodybuilding skills, but I also indulge in the sweet things in life now and then,” said Ferrigno, who played the title role in the “The Incredible Hulk” from 1978-1982. “Balance and moderation are key, but if someone tries to throw me off-balance by laying a finger on my Butterfinger, then I’m ready and more than able to defend.”

“Not only are we having fun bringing our defense experiences to life, but we’re showing Butterfinger fans how easy it is to ensure nobody lays a finger,” added Carpenter, popularly known for her supernatural starring roles, including on the hit TV series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (1997-2003) and its spin-off “Angel” (1999-2004), making her a perfect defender for the league. “We get why fans love Butterfinger simply because we love it, too. It’s my favorite candy bar, thus a no-brainer for me to sign up with the league.”

The Butterfinger Defense League will make special media appearances throughout New York City this week and meet with Butterfinger fans to talk about the formation of the league and what consumers can do to help and get involved. The celebrity defense trio will reconvene later this summer for an exclusive appearance at Comic-Con International in San Diego. • When Was The Concept Of Childhood First Invented?

Although most people take the existence of categories such as “children” and “teenagers” for granted, the entire notion of childhood is a relatively new phenomenon.

Prior to the 18th century, children were widely seen in European societies as “little adults.” Rather than being dressed in specially tailored children’s clothing, young adults wore the same clothes as their seniors, only in smaller sizes.

Childhood, however, became a category in the late 18th century and early 19th century, when professionals realized that children represented a new market for a number of services, such as schools, playgrounds, toys and clothing.

In 18th and 19th century Europe, there was a prevalent belief among society’s upper crust that working-class parents did not care for their children as much as middle and upper class parents did. Middle-class parents often believed that they valued children the most and treated them best. A frequently recited refrain among middle-class parents when referring to children was to talk of the “economically useless, emotionally priceless child.”

In the early 19th century, children ceased to be “little adults,” and thus the least important members of a household who would be expected to perform child labour, and instead became the recipients of parental love.

The first historical studies of childhood and the changing perception of parents and children were produced in the early 1970s.
