  • BlackBerry Pearl 9105 (T9 Verison) Gets Photo’d Again…

When I hear the Pearl I think Suretype, but I suppose that’s going to change soon. It’s not a secret that RIM’s been working on the T9 version of the upcoming Pearl 9100 smartphone, and Ronen from BerryReview scored more shots of the Pearl 9105 in the wild. The Pearl 9105 will bring a more classic feeling to the BlackBerry market with only 12 keys. We aren’t too sure when we will see this model launch, however we do hope to see at least the Pearl 9100 get officially recognized next week at WES 2010.

The device will give several options for text input including:

    • Compound words
    • Context learning
    • Auto word learning
    • Using contacts as a data source
    • predictive typing (Probably based on T9)
    • Including spell check variations of words in predictive typing

  • Nova Mercedes CLS Rodagem Break

  • Towing Company Feels The Streisand Effect After Suing A College Kid For $750k

Many readers have submitted the the story about a Kalamazoo towing company who is suing a college student for $750,000 for defamation of character and libel. Justin Kurtz started the “Kalamazoo residents against T&J Towing” group on Facebook earlier this year after his car was allegedly towed under shady circumstances. The Facebook group quickly grew to a few thousand Kalamazoo residents in about a week. In an attempt to quash the negative comments on the group’s page, T&J filed the suit, which then garnered the group even more attention thanks to posts on Consumerist and Jalopnik. Now, at over 10,000 members, the group is over 1/7th the total population of Kalamazoo itself. Once again, another company is starting to learn that using lawyers in an attempt to silence criticism can have the exact opposite effect. The Streisand Effect Hall of Fame continues to rack up inductees.

  • SEC Vs. Goldman Is Weak, But The Danger Is That This Becomes The New Asbestos

(This guest post comes courtesy of the Mad Hedge Fund Trader)

What does the Debacle at Goldman Sachs Mean for Stocks?

I can tell you that the timing of the SEC’s GS announcement absolutely reeks, coming on a Friday at a market top, just as the debate about financial regulation has become the business at hand in congress. The case demolishes any Wall Street/Republican efforts to limit regulation to a few limp, token gestures.

Expect more teeth in any final bill, and a substantial clipping of the wings on risk taking by the major firms. Perhaps it was the failure of the government’s case against two fund managers at Bear Stearns that limited this to a civil, instead of a criminal case, with its lower burden of proof.

The real damage here is political and reputational, which has already been achieved with the Friday press announcement. The SEC can now rightfully claim that there’s a new sheriff in town, and this time he is not just slapping  wrists. GS will ring fence the case, attribute it to the actions of a single rogue individual, the “fabulous” Fabrice Tourre. Senior management will cry out that they are “shocked, shocked” that these activities were going on, as Claude Raines said in the classic film, Casablanca, and disavow any knowledge or responsibility.

chartDon’t believe for a second that GS will be permanently damaged by the affair, which will set up a long term buy for the stock. Even if they lose the case, total financial losses of $1 billion would amount to only $1.2 /share. Yet the sell off vaporized $15 billion in GS market capitalization. And the government’s case is weak, at best. The bigger threat to the industry, as a whole, is that this could become the new asbestos (check the ranking of CDO issuers right).

There were thousands of deals similar to the Abacus deal that got GS into hot water, and new class action suits are probably being written as you read this. The Europeans will join in, where a large part of the CDO losses were suffered. Again, no big deal. Look at the back of the prospectus of any deep pocketed Wall Street firm and you will find dozens of pending law suits. These are already some of the most sued people on the planet. Litigation is just another cost of doing business. Spread it out over decades and adjust down for settlements, and this is little more than a nuisance. Massive trading profits can cover a multitude of sins. The bottom line is that if the stock market goes down, it will be for a multitude of other reasons, not because of GS.

  • Rumor: RadioShack to quit selling Palm Pre and Pixi

Just when it seems Palm has hit rock bottom, they slip even further into what could be the point of no return.  Rumor has it that Radio Shack is cycling the Palm Pre and Pixi out of their nationwide inventory.  Upon searching RadioShack’s online store, there is no evidence of any webOS devices ever having been there.  What’s more, in-store stock seems to be heading in the same direction with the shelves emptying fast.

Wendy Dominguez, the corporate media relations manager for RadioShack, would not comment on why their inventory of the Pre and Pixi appears to be dwindling but claims, “Palm has been a good partner. We expect that relationship to continue.” With Palm’s Michael Abbott gone and reports that the company is up for sale, it will be very interesting to see what becomes of the veteran smartphone maker.  What say you?

  • Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Break Concept revealed ahead of Beijing *UPDATED

Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Break Concept – Click above for high-res image gallery

Mercedes-Benz may not have invented the idea of a “four-door coupe” with the original CLS back in 2005, but the German automaker can surely be credited with the recent influx of such designs from automakers as varied and far-ranging as BMW, Jaguar and Hyundai. As such, you can be sure that Mercedes is keenly interested in reinventing the look it made so popular in the first place so as to differentiate itself from its competitors.

As we reported late last month, it seems likely that Mercedes-Benz will use the upcoming Beijing Motor Show to preview its next-gen CLS, along with the introduction of what appears to be a production-ready shooting break design. While the moniker is more often spelled ‘shooting brake,’ MB is keen to point out that the correct spelling is ‘break,’ as in breaking a horse that draws a carriage. Whatever the name, we’re liking what we see from this concept.

From what we can see in these pictures, which we presume show a conceptual shape that’s awfully close to what a future production model will look like, the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Break seems to be a much more successful design than that of the BMW 5 Series GT that it will undoubtedly be compared to. We’d also wager that the rear hatchback and flat load floor would prove fairly useful in real life due to a suitably tall roof without too much downward slope.

Powerplants for the next-gen CLS are also previewed by this concept. Expect a turbocharged and direct injected 3.5-liter V6 engine with over 300 horsepower along with an uplevel turbocharged 4.6-liter V8 that puts out around 435 horsepower and over 400 pound-feet of torque. Those engines will reportedly provide a 25-percent improvement in fuel efficiency over the mills they replace and will route power to the rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Not powerful enough for you? Perhaps the 5.5-liter V8, complete with turbocharging and direct injection, in the AMG model will be more to your liking. How does up to 563 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque sound?

Expect to see a sedan (codenamed C218) in addition to this shooting brake (codenamed X218) when the next-gen CLS is finally ready for production. Either way, it appears buyers will be getting cutting-edge styling along with a nicely appointed and luxurious interior. As always, we suggest you take a peek for yourself in our high-res image gallery below.

  • Remote for iTunes: Better than the original.

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but sometimes, the imitation exceeds the original. That is the case with this handy little app. Having previously switched from an iPhone, I missed my iTunes remote app. A lot.

But no longer! Remote for iTunes is exactly what the name suggests: a simple iTunes app. It has a simple, uncluttered interface that syncs with iTunes without a hitch. Unlike the actual iPhone version which took nearly half a minute to connect to my library, this app does it in seconds! The speed doesn’t just stop there: the cover art for my albums fly off my machine and onto the phone so even scrolling through the library can be pretty. It doesn’t have cover flow, but for true functionality, you can’t do better. Even with the original iPhone app.

    Pros:

    • Simple and well-designed interface
    • Faster than the original iPhone remote app

    Cons:

    • No cover flow
    • Doesn’t connect to iTunes if the computer is at the lock screen
    • Could have a better UI for playlists with sub-headings for video/audio/podcasts. Currently, everything shows up as a playlist

Final Verdict: This app is in beta at the moment, but there is very little to improve on. It’s a must have for any iTunes user.

  • Will Motorola’s next Android phone offer 3D?

A mysterious unnamed Motorola Android phone appeared over the weekend. A handful of pictures leaked out, but details remain scarce. Many sites were quick to point out the translucent flip cover featured on the front of the phone, but none have been able to explain its purpose.

According to a recent patent application filed by Motorola, that flip cover could be used to display 3D images. Made from a lenticular material, the cover is able to produce three dimensional images when it is closed.

A section of the patent reads:

“A cover is mechanically coupled to the housing and may be moved to overlie the display. The cover includes an optical element, such as a transparent lenticular material, through which the display may be viewed. The display presents images in two dimensions, and when the cover is “open“, the operator sees the displayed images, for example, diagrams and text, in two dimensions. However, when the cover is “closed“, the operator perceives the images presented through the optical element as three dimensional.”

The idea sounds awesome in theory, but we will have to wait to see how the implementation actually performs. Which types of Android applications do you think would benefit from a 3D display?

  • Dell Mini 5 clears FCC, makes its way to T-Mobile?

    Dell Mini 5

You down with FCC? Yeah you know me!  Who’s down with FCC? Everybody!

Corny comments aside, if you’re a fan of large touchscreen devices such as the HTC HD2 or the HTC EVO 4G, wait until you hear what just cleared the FCC.  The Dell Mini 5, that’s what!  You’re probably thinking “well, that’s not news, that happened back in February.”  And if that’s what you’re thinking you’d be correct.  However, the variant that made its way through the FCC back in February was cleared for AT&T’s 3G bands.  Today, it looks like T-Mobile (or at least T-Mobile customers) will also have access to the device based on information from an FCC filing that shows a new DM5 variant with T-Mobile’s 3G bands.

As a brief refresher, the Dell Mini 5 can arguably be called a mix between a tablet and a smartphone.  Boasting a 5 inch 800×480 capacitive touchscreen, the DM5 will come equipped with Android OS (the prototype had OS 1.6, and we’re hoping they’ve upgraded since), a 1GHz Snapdragon processor (pretty standard these days), Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, and a 5.0-megapixel camera with flash.

The question that remains is whether Dell plans on “pulling a Google” and making a DM5 compatible with all carriers, or if they’ll partner with each carrier individually to allow for subsidized versions of the device.

What do you think Dell will do?  Leave your thoughts in the comments!
