UNITEC – Vis-á-vis
he new UNITEC series of cases, which was introduced at the electronica 2008, has now been extended by a practical smaller S size. The new UNITEC range of cases is characterised by two different operating panels at right angles to each other with ergonomic inclinations of 72° and 18°. Depending on the application, these can be used for operating and/or reading-off purposes, thus allowing simultaneous applications, for example the doctor vis-à-vis the patient.
The standard version of the UNITEC was designed as a three-part unit and consists of a top part, a bottom part as well as a rear-facing front part in the standard colour of off-white (RAL 9002). The M version has the dimensions 148 x 210 x 80/25 mm (W x D x H), while the new S size has the dimensions 125 x 177 x 69/22 mm. In order to satisfy individual customer requirements, the top and front parts are available with recesses of different depths:
– Variant 1: with an all-over operating area with a depth of 0.6 mm
(e.g. for using overlay foils)
– Variant 2: top and bottom parts each with separate defined areas (1.4 mm deep) for membrane keyboards etc.
– Variant 3: Top part with a recess of 0.6 mm, front part 1.4 mm
– Variant 4: Top part with a recess of 1.4 mm, front part 0.6 mm
Here it is up to the user to decide whether he wishes to use no operating area at all, only one area (on the front or on the back) or even both areas with appropriate membrane keyboards. This range of cases is highly flexible in its assembly capability, for the printed circuit boards can be positioned in any of the three individual parts, and thanks to its flat surfaces is ideal for the use of large displays or touch screens. Since the operating panels are positioned at right angles to each other, it is possible to install electronics and interfaces as complete ready-made packages. The bottom part of the case already has matching installation bays as standard for separate battery compartments (in the range of accessories) with 3x or 5x 1.5 V AA batteries, or completely closed for an incoming power supply. The comprehen-sive portfolio is completed by a two-part bracket. With the help of this bracket, the UNITEC case can be used in different ergonomic environments for wall-mounted applications.

Microsoft planning low-cost Windows Phone 7 devices for developing markets
Suppose that in addition to excluding a decade of apps and development, leaving out certain features, and starting out from scratch with a whole new visual theme, your phone is just plain expensive. So expensive, in fact, due to the restrictions you’ve placed on its hardware in order that it might run well, that you’ve priced yourself right out of huge markets like China and India. Which is to say something like a third of the world’s phone-buying population. What do you do? You make Windows Phone 7 Budget Series, of course!According to Sudeep Bharati, who works on Microsoft India’s Visual Studio team, says that “the low-cost version of the phone will have a different chassis than version 1 to be launched by 2010 end.” Now, it’s not clear whether this is a chassis different from the three already announced. That is to say, it isn’t clear whether it is the third of those chassis or a secret bonus chassis.
If I had to guess, I’d say it would sport the minimum spec, since Sudeep said nothing of a different spec sheet. My guess would be: cheaper materials, candy bar build, 320×480 non-LED screen, and bargain bin graphics.

Citroën Metropolis plug-in hybrid limousine concept

Not so long ago the notion of an eco-friendly vehicle meant small, boxy and decidedly uncool. But the push towards hybrid and electric vehicles in recent times has changed all that – if supercars can be hybrids, why not limousines? Citroën’s international design team has created the Metropolis plug-in hybrid-limousine concept for the Shanghai World Fair. The imposing 5.3m long by 2m wide by 1.4m high vehicle produces impressively low CO2 emissions of just 70g/km via a 2-liter, V6 petrol engine and an electric motor developing 70kW at its peak…

St. Charles North starts new winning streak
A 10-game winning streak for St. Charles North’s softball team came to an end last Thursday in a 10-9 loss to Neuqua Valley.
So how did the North Stars respond? By starting a new streak in decisive fashion with a 17-1 win over Elgin Monday in St. Charles.
In the five-inning victory the North Stars (11-2 overall, 4-1 in the Upstate Eight Conference) pounded out 16 hits, drew five walks and had one hit batter. All but one player reached base successfully.
Amanda Ciran picked up the win in the circle for North. After yielding two baserunners in the first inning, she let just three batters reach in the next four innings.
Taylor Russell continued her hot streak, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Annie Korth was 3-for-3 with a walk, three doubles, three runs and three RBIs. Ashley Seering went 2-for-2 (walk, hit by pitch), scored three times and drove in two. Ciran helped her own cause with a two-run homer to cap a five-run first for the Stars.

Brookfield village planner job still unfilled
Calling the move “shortsighted,” one Brookfield village trustee had some barbs to throw following the decision not to refill the void left by a former village planner — a void created amid harsh criticisms of officials, residents and the media.
Brookfield Village Manager Rick Ginex said the village planner position, left vacant by Meena Beyers as of April 15, will not yet be filled due to the economy.
“I’ve already told the board that I want to wait on filling that position for five to six months at least,” Ginex said. “I want to see where we’re at financially, and I really have some concerns with the state of Illinois.”
The state could be reducing the municipal share of the state income tax by 3 percent, which would mean that Brookfield could stand to lose $440,000.
“If they take that away, we’re going to be in a world of hurt,” Ginex said. “I’m not too confident in what the state does nowadays. Sometimes the budget is not done by June 30 like it is supposed to be. I think five or six months is a good benchmark.”
At the Village Board meeting April 12, Trustee Michael Towner read a statement saying that he felt the village planner position needed to be filled.
“Brookfield took two steps back by not having this position filled,” Towner said. “Our staff and their abilities are the foundation from which we build on. It is not always visible to the public until a sign goes up or a brick is laid. To say the position is not needed is just shortsighted. We need to be ready as the economy is improving and need this position to help us to lead for a better Brookfield.”
In a resignation letter, Beyers accused certain village staff members of “having no boundaries or respect for privacy.”
Beyers criticized officials and residents for their disrespect.
“In my career, I have never served such a disdainful and disrespectful community as I experienced during my time serving the Village of Brookfield,” Beyers said. “During my last year, it became increasingly clear that current and former elected officials, residents and press are more interested in continuing the counterproductive politics of the past than moving the community forward.”
Beyers also said village residents did not value what was best for the community.
“I now understand that Brookfield residents may never value what is best for the community, as the longevity of long-range planning in their minds ends with the next election or village negotiation.”
Beyers said the only thing making her position “endurable” was the camaraderie of the staff and competency of the Brookfield Plan Commission. Beyers’ salary was $70,571, and her insurance costs were $16,940.
Ginex said Beyers’ resignation would cause more work for the current employees.
“Meena did a significant amount of work on the (TIF district) car wash, so I’m not going to say not having her here is not going to affect any planning issue,” Ginex said. “The planing will fall on (assistant village manager) Keith (Sbiral) and I now. Development still has to go on.”

How the iPhone ‘4G’ got lost
Let’s face it — Alcohol has been the cause of many, many moments of regret. But for one 27-year-old beer drinker and Apple software engineer, his walk of shame had nothing to do with girls. It was the walk through his company’s doors last month, to explain that he left one of the most buzzed-about, and most secretive, pieces of mobile technology today — on a bar stool after a night of drinking.
Truth is, I actually feel bad for the guy. He has got to be feeling humiliated. My sympathies even tempted me to forego this post. But truth is, the story has already been broken. And in all honesty, my first duty is to our readers — and how the next-gen iPhone got lost in the first place has been a huge question in the mind of the public.
And so, according to Gizmodo, here’s how it went…
On March 18, a young man goes to a German beer garden in Redwood City, CA, called The Gourmet Haus Staudt. He’s enjoying himself. And why not? The guy’s been doing his duty, working on the software the iPhone uses to make phone calls. At some point in the night, he updates his Facebook page using the device — which he’s testing out in the real world. Sometime after that, he gets his things together and walks out the door, blissfully ignorant of the fact that he’s forgetting something: the prototype that’s still sitting on the stool at the bar.
The guy who ultimately wound up with it thought it was just a forgotten 3GS, thanks to an outer case that was styled to look like one. By the next morning, the phone was remote wiped. That’s when he noticed the phone didn’t look or feel quite right, and the front facing camera was a dead giveaway that something was off. So he cracked open the shell to reveal the real next-generation iPhone staring at him in the face.
So like I said, I feel bad for the engineer. Yes, it was a bone-headed thing to do, no doubt. But it was an honest mistake, not an act of self-serving profiteering or corporate espionage. I might feel differently if I were his boss, or Steve Jobs himself. Scratch that. I’m sure I’d feel differently. But I’m not, and so I empathize with the unimaginable regret, embarrassment — and maybe even a little fear — this guy must be feeling. His name (which I am purposely not divulging here — you can hit the source link at the bottom, if you’re that curious) will be connected to this debacle for some time to come.
Let this be a learning lesson: Top secrets and beer don’t mix. Actually, that’s pretty good advice in general, no?

Mercedes-Benz Shooting Break Concept – Auto Shows
Mercedes-Benz prepares a slick neo-Nomad concept based on the next-gen CLS, but the production version won’t come here.
Mercedes-Benz is giving us our best look yet at its next CLS-class four-door at the Beijing auto show in the form of the Shooting Break concept. Just as the current E-class sedan’s body sculpting and lighting were previewed at the 2008 Paris auto show by the wagon-esque ConceptFASCINATION, the Shooting Break (Mercedes’ spelling, not ours) shows us most of the next-gen four-door CLS’s bod. The front end’s bisected grille, huge three-pointed star, and aggressive headlamp shapes will make it to production, although we’re not sure if the lamps themselves will be comprised completely of LEDs, as seen here. Only from the C-pillar back should the production CLS differ, as its roof will drape gracefully into a low decklid. So if you hold your finger over the rear part of the roof and D-pillar and squint, (most of) the CLS sedan will magically appear.
