  • Ohio Rep Aims to Protect Military Families

An Ohio Congressmen who successfully passed legislation in his home state protecting military families from hate protesters at the funerals of U.S. soldiers is pushing to make his law a national precedent. Representative John Boccieri (D-OH) and fellow military veteran Duncan Hunter (R-CA) have introduced a House resolution that urges the Supreme Court to rule in favor of military families seeking to restrict the First Amendment rights of protestors at military funerals.

Boccieri told Fox News on Saturday “As a military veteran and current reservist, we would fight over and over again for their right to spew their venom and their hate. But they have to do it at a respectful distance. The right to free speech ends where the privacy of a family mourning the loss of a service member begins.”

While in the Ohio Legislature, Boccieri introduced and successfully passed House Bill 484, the Let Them Rest in Peace Act. It creates a 300 foot buffer between protestors and grieving families at funerals. The bill was signed into Ohio law May 2006.

Boccieri, a former C-130 pilot who flew missions during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, says his law doesn’t prevent what he calls “hate groups” from “spewing their venom.” But he told Fox News the law keeps them at a respectful distance. “This is personal for me. I have flown wounded and fallen soldiers in and out of Baghdad.”

Boccieri said he wants the same protections guaranteed to other groups “Over and over again, and just as recently as 2000 in Colorado versus Hill Supreme Court case, they said whether it’s abortion clinic or whether it’s at a protest for political rally, they have to be at least 300 feet away. We are suggesting that the states that enacted these provisions, where they have said that the grieving family has a right to privacy, make the minimum distance 300 feet.”

The resolution was introduced Friday — just a few weeks after the Supreme Court announced it would hear the case of Snyder v. Phelps during its next term. The case focuses on a military father, who told a Baltimore jury how picketing by members of the Westboro Baptist Church at his son’s funeral in 2006, with signs like “Semper Fi Fags” and “Thank God for Dead Soldiers” stripped the dignity from the proceeding. Snyder was awarded $10 million, which was then cut in half on appeal. The judgment was ultimately reversed by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit, which ruled the group’s speech, offensive as it was, was constitutionally protected. The case was one of three the court announced it will consider in its new term that begins in October.

  • That Wikileaks Video and Supporting Our Troups

    By Anthony Gregory

Those who revealed and shared the “collateral murder” video footage of the Apache helicopter atrocity in Iraq were accused of not supporting the troops, taking the video out of context and so forth. To publicize U.S. war crimes has been called unAmerican.

Well, two of the soldiers involved have written an open letter of apology to the families injured by this atrocity, asking fellow Americans to sign it. It says in part:

We have been speaking to whoever will listen, telling them that what was shown in the Wikileaks video only begins to depict the suffering we have created. From our own experiences, and the experiences of other veterans we have talked to, we know that the acts depicted in this video are everyday occurrences of this war: this is the nature of how U.S.-led wars are carried out in this region.

We acknowledge our part in the deaths and injuries of your loved ones as we tell Americans what we were trained to do and carried out in the name of “god and country”. The soldier in video said that your husband shouldn’t have brought your children to battle, but we are acknowledging our responsibility for bringing the battle to your neighborhood, and to your family. We did unto you what we would not want done to us.

If you want to support these troops, sign the letter and do your part to spread the truth—that our occupying armies in the Middle East are causing great harm, committing great violence against the innocent—for as long as Americans are more offended by people pointing out U.S. atrocities than by the atrocities themselves, our foreign policy will continue to be atrocious, generating hatred and terrorism toward America and destroying much-needed wealth and priceless liberties in the process.

  • GameStation Owns The Soul of 7,500 People, That Too Legally

An online British game retailer has recently announced that it officially and legally owns the soul of 7,500 people who made any form of online purchase at their website. They are basing this claim on a clause added to their license agreement which gives control of a customer’s soul over to GameStation.

    The exact clause says,

By placing an order via this Web site on the first day of the fourth month of the year 2010 Anno Domini, you agree to grant Us a non transferable option to claim, for now and for ever more, your immortal soul. Should We wish to exercise this option, you agree to surrender your immortal soul, and any claim you may have on it, within 5 (five) working days of receiving written notification from gamesation.co.uk or one of its duly authorised minions.

This was an April Fool’s joke. The term of soul ownership was added on the 1st of April. It clearly proves that no-one reads the license agreement. Also, there was another checkbox to opt-out; only 22% of the total people clicked it. Surprisingly, this led them to a £5 discount.

To further clarify the customer’s position in this, the company will e-mail clients and tell them the truth about this being a joke.

  • Report: GM forced Saab to pay for Cadillac BLS development

    Cadillac BLS

Way back in 2005, General Motors decided it needed a small four-door sedan in order for Cadillac to compete in Europe. The end result? The Cadillac BLS. The car was little more than seriously restyled Saab 9-3 (itself an already aging model), and since most Europeans are neither blind nor ignorant, the car didn’t fare well in a market loaded with goods from the likes of BMW and Mercedes-Benz. It was scrapped after a mere four years of production.

As usual, there’s a little more to the story than that. According to Ny Teknik, GM stuck Saab with the cost of reworking the 9-3 into a Cadillac to the tune of around $140 million after the model tanked. The site quotes Jan-Åke Jonsson, the managing director of Saab, as saying that being out from under GM control will have its advantages. Yeah, we can see how he might feel that way. Top tip, Tom!

  • Two Profiles You Would Least Expect to Find on Facebook

Facebook is an amazingly crazy place. You will find the most unexpected type of people here. But these two Facebook pages which have surfaced this week and are surely the ones you would want to check out.

    Kip Drordy

The first is that of Kip Drordy. Southpark fans went gaga over the release of the last episode of Southpark. The last episode marks the 200th birthday of Southpark. This episode shows a Facebook overdrive amongst people and a craze for friend count. Our character Kip Drordy, who is new to Facebook, is in desperate need of online friends on Facebook.

Well, someone went ahead and created a real page for Kip Drordy on Facebook. He has 133,299 fans now and you can see his fan page created by a guy from North Carolina. He has no connections whatsoever with Facebook. But it is interesting to see that status updates like “Made oatmeal cookies. Ate 2.2 cookies” get 6,343 likes and “There was a bee in my room” gets 1321 comments.

    Osama Bin Laden

Even before you read any further, I want to tell you that this is a fake Osama Bin Laden profile. This profile is not real. It is clearly a case of identity theft and Facebook has banned the page now. The profile went by the name of The leader of the Mujahideen, Osama bin Laden. As expected, the messages posted on the page were in Arabic and the page has over 1000 fans. The account went online just a month ago and you can read more on this at The Sun.

  • Coffee Break- Blogging on the iPad with a Keyboard

I didn’t set out to work when I headed out to the local Starbucks. I wanted to sit in the big comfy chair and read for a while. I arrived at the store only to find all of the comfy chairs occupied and the Starbucks fairly hopping. I got my drink and sat down at one of those tiny round tables, the ones that fit a couple of drinks and not much else. Little did I know that I would soon be working away.

I pulled out the iPad I had thrown in the bag and started to log into the Wi-Fi, but thought I’d check to see if the Sprint 4G network I recently singed up for was active in this location. I hit the button on the Sprint Overdrive and waited a couple of minutes for it to power up. Boot speed is not one of its strengths.

Lo and behold the 4G was not only active but with nearly full signal strength. This meant my bandwidth should be pretty darn good and it was. I was getting over 4 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up in no time.

This healthy bandwidth had me surfing the web and doing all sorts of things without missing a beat on the iPad. I decided to share this information and pulled out the Stowaway Bluetooth keyboard that I have tested with the iPad but haven’t used much. I was going to town with the keyboard and the iPad, all on the 4G network shared by the Overdrive modem. True mobile tech, working together seamlessly. I haven’t had so much fun since the old Sony U days.

I used the WordPress app for the iPad to create this post. It works great and handles everything except uploading images for the post. That’s a shame and they need to add this, as it means I could only post it as a draft and then add the image at home for publishing. The iPhone version of the app has this ability, since it has a camera, but the iPad needs it too.

Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t recommend everyone go out and get all of this equipment. But if you already have it like I do, it sure works great. I realize that many would say that I could easily have done this on a netbook, but I’d say you were wrong about that. I didn’t have a netbook with me, and this was much more enjoyable. Fun times when Mobile Tech Manor hits the road.

  • Nexus One Car Dock review (photos & video)

When the car dock first made a cameo appearance in the “Nexus One: The Story – Episode 1: Concept & Design” video I knew I needed one. And when Google announced it was available for sale I was one of the first to place my order. Does it live up to the $55 price tag?

The Nexus One Car Dock comes in a gorgeous hard box very similar to the one the Nexus One comes in. Inside are the car dock, 12v cable, mounting disc, alcohol wipe, instructions and warranty information.

My first thought after playing with it on the kitchen counter for a few minutes was “Over engineered”. The thing swivels every which way. I was sure it wouldn’t have a firm grip on the phone or the windshield. I thought I had wasted my money. Boy, was I wrong.

I installed the car dock following the instructions (wiping the windshield and suction cup with the alcohol wipe, etc). It took a few times to figure out a good spot so that it was in arms reach but not in my way. There is a locking mechanism on the base that you twist and it is on until you untwist it. I haven’t had it fall off since that first day. We will see how it does after a few weeks in the Texas summer (which weakens all but the best suction cup car devices) but I think it has a good shot at surviving.

Power is supplied by using a 12v cigarette lighter adapter. The actual adapter part again feels real solid and heavy when compared to your average $5 adapter. The cable is the perfect length and part of it is coiled so it isn’t laying at your passengers feet all the time. I did not test out the mounting disc (which adheres to your dash so you can mount the card dock to the disc if having it attached to your windshield is illegal or not possible) but it feels of higher quality than others I have seen.

To snap the phone in you have to use a little bit of force. I was hesitant at first but the clasp doesn’t scratch the phone and gives a good loud click when your phone is secure. In less than a second your screen turns on and the Car Home app is launched giving you large icons to access to View Map, Navigation, Voice Search, Contacts, Search and Home. After playing with the orientation a bit I found I prefered the horizontal (sideways) positioning even though many apps and the regular home screen do not orient sideways (though the latest CyanogenMod ROM allows the home screen to rotate). The car dock does allow you to rotate the device easily without being so loose that it moves on its own.

The phone connects to the speaker in the dock via bluetooth. You can assign the speaker to act as a speaker phone and/or play music and media. This allows you to play music out the headphone jack and into your car stereo and still have the dock as your speakerphone. Very cool. The speaker in the unit is pretty good, a lot better than the speaker in the phone itself, but not so good that I’m going to stop using my car stereo. The dock also has up and down volume buttons which seem to work for some media but not others. It’s a little odd and people have complained about the buttons not working at all, so there is obviously something going on there that needs to be looked at.

The dock also has cutouts for both of the microphones so the noise cancellation works. Additionally there is a cut out for the camera lens. This allows the phone to sit flush in the unit and also allows you to have a dashcam if you wanted to record your driving.

As you would expect, the dock recharges your phone as you drive without having to plug in additional wires. I was able to to listen to the MLB At Bat app (listening to radio broadcast over 3G) and still end up with a little more battery than when I started.

All in all this is a rock solid accessory. True, the price tag is a little steep. I would have preferred that they used less elegant package design to shave a few dollars off, but the device itself is so well designed and such a perfect compliment to the phone that it is well worth it. Over the life of other phones I have had to buy three or four car docks for $12-15 that didn’t do anything but hold the phone. This one does a lot more and I think will last a lot longer. Money well spent.

  • Electronic Coupons Are Watching Your Every Shopping Move

If you like printing out coupons from the Internet but don’t like for retailers to know too much about you, um, now might be a good time to stop. Coupons sent to cell phones or printed out from sites like Ebates.com or even Facebook can contain info all about who is spending money on what products, how often, and so on and so forth, all in a bid for retailers to better market to consumers.

The New York Times reports on the phenomenon, which involves retailers working with an online advertising agencies who in turn use a company called RevTrax to process data all about consumers using coupons.

For example, if you’re a fan on Facebook of a certain retailer, that company can see your Facebook ID. If you then print out a coupon offered by them, and use it, they can sift through the data and take a look at who you are and combine that with your shopping habits to better sell you that sweet blender you don’t really need.

Companies can also find out, through electronic coupons, what search terms you used to search for the resulting coupon, which better aids them in finding out what works best to get you in the store and buying when they create the coupons.

The NYT is way more eloquent:

Using coupons to link Internet behavior with in-store shopping lets retailers figure out which ad slogans or online product promotions work best, how long someone waits between searching and shopping, even what offers a shopper will respond to or ignore.

For the most part, the coupons track shoppers anonymously, but in the case of sites like Ebates.com, you could search for a discount on lawn mowers, print out a coupon, redeem it later that day and that information would be available to retailers.

“Over time,” says Jonathan Treiber, co-founder of RevTrax, “we’ll be able to do much better profiling around certain I.P. addresses, to say, hey, this I.P. address is showing a proclivity for printing clothing apparel coupons and is really only responding to coupons greater than 20 percent off.”

Scary? Could be. Useful? Perhaps. But maybe I won’t use that coupon for a 24-pack of Twinkies… just in case.

  • Toyota recalling 600,000 Sienna minivans over corrosion on spare tire cable

It appears Toyota just can’t shake the recall bug. Since last fall, Toyota has issued massive recalls for floor mats, stuck pedals, Prius brakes, Tundra frame rust and now the Japanese automaker’s minivan is getting in on the act. Toyota has announced that it will voluntarily recall 600,000 of its 1998-2010 Sienna minivans for corrosion on the spare tire cable. A Toyota press release on the subject tells us that the cable may rust to the point where “the spare tire could become separated from the vehicle, a road hazard for following vehicles that increases the likelihood of a crash.”

The primary cause of the corrosion stems from road salt used to combat ice. The recall covers vehicles in the northern states listed in the post-jump press release, though Toyota says it will inspect the spare tire cable on vehicles from states not affected by the recall as well.

At this point, Toyota admits it is still working on a solution to the rusted cable problem. If your Sienna is affected by the recall, you will receive a notice from the automaker to head to a dealer for inspection. Once Toyota comes up with a proper fix, customers will receive a second notice advising Sienna owners of the remedy. We’re thinking two trips to the dealer is less than ideal, but then again we’re sure most customers aren’t interested in having their spare tire fall out during rush hour traffic. Hit the jump to read over the Toyota press release. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

    whuffiemeter

Just a decade ago, our unsophisticated brains couldn’t even conceive of items like the iPhone–never mind the iPad. Starting with the premise that the unimaginable can quickly become ubiquitous, a group of designers, futurists, and journalists recently sat down in San Francisco to try and imagine our lives in 2020. They focused on how technology will impact social interactions, travel, commerce, healthcare, and the media.

The ideas came thick and fast. One idea for the future is a “Thingbook” that would take augmented reality to the next step. Designers imagined that the Thingbook would catalog and index every visible thing. So if you see someone on the street wearing a cool jacket that you’d like to buy, all you have to do is look at it and your mobile handset or AR-equipped eyeglasses will identify the object and look up the best price and retailer, writes design mind.

Other ideas included the Whuffie Meter, wherein you can immediately access everything public about a person who is sitting across from you, as well as the Bodynet, which would instantly compute the result of that big burger-and-fries lunch.

  • 2011 Audi RS5: 444 HP for $105,600… is it worth it?

    2011 Audi RS5

So here we have the much anticipated 2011 Audi RS5 and I must say that it is quite a looker. Its flared front fenders, new rear spoiler that deploys at speed, and redesigned front bumper with monster air intakes really help set it apart from the standard S5. Powering the RS5 is Audi’s proven 4.2-liter V8 which kicks out 444 HP / 317 LB.TQ. Audi loves this mill and puts it in everything. The problem is it’s really not that powerful by today’s standards and with a European price tag of around $105,600 one may question if there are perhaps, some better deals out there from other manufacturers.

    2011 Audi RS5

Laid out the performance numbers are good, but not amazing for the over $100k price. 0-60 in 4.6 seconds, top speed limited to 155 mph and a rating of 22 mpg. Yes the car has Audi’s amazing Quattro all-wheel drive, as well as a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, but with performance numbers that are really no better than that of Fords new Mustang GT 5.0, I ask again… is it worth it?
