  • 2011 Ford Explorer: Better Traction Through Technology

Which one is guns and which one is missiles?

If you’ve been following the development of the 2011 Ford Explorer, you can’t help but wonder if the classic SUV has been neutered to become just another cute ute. After all, base models will be powered by an EcoBoost four cylinder motor, it features unibody construction and it powers the wrong wheels unless you opt for the four wheel drive version. All these changes may produce a more fuel efficient Explorer, but can you still take it off road?

Feat not, lovers of the blue oval. On 4wd Explorer models, Ford will be re-using the terrain management technology developed for Land Rover, before the brand was spun off to Tata. By adjusting a knob located near the shifter, the driver can select one of four terrain modes plus hill descent. “Normal” is used for driving on pavement, “Mud” allows wheelspin to build momentum in the sticky stuff, “Sand” maximizes torque and “Snow” limits torque to prevent wheelspin. Hill descent allows the driver to crawl down steep or loose surfaces without locking the brakes and loosing traction.

The 2011 Ford Explorer won’t be challenging Jeep Rubicons or Toyota FJ Cruisers for off-road ability, but that never was the purpose of the Explorer. They’re bought to drive the kids to soccer practice, take the dog to the vet, haul mulch from Home Depot and get you safely from Point A to Point B in all kinds of weather. Since only 10% of SUV buyers ever take their vehicles off road, I’d say the new Explorer is probably right on the money.

  • Iran Hoarding Oil At Sea Because They Can’t Sell It

    Oil Tanker

Iran, the world’s fifth-largest oil producing nation, is increasing the amount of oil is stores in tankers at sea.

Iranian officials say this is due to refinery overhauls and seasonality, but some industry players believe it’s due to an inability to sell all of their production right now.

    Reuters:

One source estimated Iran had crude on 19 very large crude carriers (VLCCs) and one smaller suezmax tanker, compared with around 12 VLCCs at the end of March. A VLCC can store up to 2 million barrels of crude oil, while a suezmax can store up to 1 million barrels.

Iranian officials declined to say how much crude was being stored, but confirmed that there was oil on tankers.

“It’s not as many as 20 vessels, but some of our customers do have crude on tankers in the Gulf,” one Iranian oil official said. “One of the reasons is due to refinery overhauls.” Global demand typically falls in the second quarter as northern hemisphere refineries undertake work on units and switch to heavier

Much of Iran’s crude is heavy and has a high sulphur content, making it harder and more expensive for refiners to convert it into valued transport fuels. “One theory is they are having trouble selling the cargo,” a shipping source said. “It could be due to lack of demand for some heavy Iranian crude.”

There is some limit to world oil demand right now, despite the price strength oil has exhibited and the global economy rebound.

  • Phillies Fan Busted For Vomitting On 11-Year-Old Girl

Meet Matthew Clemmens of Cherry Hill, New Jersey — PopCrunch’s Filthy Pig of the Day!

The 21-year-old Philadelphia Phillies fanatic was arrested Wednesday night after he allegedly vomited on an 11-year-old girl (on purpose) during the Phillies home game against the Washington Nationals. Cops in the City of Brotherly Love say Clemmens — who was already sporting a big, ugly shiner — made himself upchuck on an off-duty police captain and his young daughter after a friend was ejected from the park for unruly behavior.

What an animal! This is the latest black eye on the face of Philly sports fans — who were left shamefaced last fall when Phillies fan Susan Finkelstein tried to prostitute herself on Craigslist in exchange for World Series tickets.

  • Fix Common System Problems with Microsoft Fix It Center Online

Microsoft has launched Fix it Center Online – a repository of Fix It solutions offered by Microsoft. Fix It patches are nothing but one-click solutions to common system problems that Microsoft has been offering for quite some time. In the past, we have referred to them on numerous occasions. However, until now there was no central repository for all the Fix It patches released by Microsoft. So, unless you knew exactly what you were looking for, it was practically impossible to locate the required solution. The newly released Fix It Center (FIC) takes care of this problem.

    Fix-It-Center-Solutions

The FIC client packages old and new fixes into a neat utility. Once installed, it will automatically scan your system, detect your hardware and software configuration and offer to fix any detected incorrect system settings. Microsoft claims that FIC can even find and fix issues before they become real problems.

    Fix-It-Center-Online-Sync

FIC also allows you create an online account, which maintains a record of all the fixes applied by you in the past. You can install Fix it Center client on as many PCs you like, and when you use the same sign-in account during the client setup on each PC, the information about all your PCs will be registered in the same account. This feature may appear unnecessary to home users but it can be of great help to computer technicians and system administrators.

    Techie Buzz Verdict

Microsoft-Fix-It-Center If there is one thing that I didn’t like about FIC, it is the fact that it forced me to use a web installer. It is not hard to see why Microsoft opted to offer just a web installer – they probably just want to ensure that you always install the latest version on any system. However, this also makes deploying FIC on systems with slow internet connection cumbersome. Other than this, I can find very little to nitpick about. Some of the solutions suggested by FIC are quite basic. But then, this isn’t really a tool for power users.

Fix It Center is a beta product. Hence, it may behave unpredictably. However, during my brief testing it worked flawlessly. It’s definitely a great tool and every computer user should have FIC at his disposal.

    Techie Buzz Rating: 4.5/5 (Excellent)

Lormarins 1200 launch in London – Click above for image gallery

If you’re into classic cars and vintage rallies, you know the Mille Miglia, but you likely haven’t heard of the Lormarins 1200. Not yet, at least, because it was just announced and has yet to take place. Unlike the Mille Miglia, upon which it’s modeled, the Lormarins 1200 is a new event and not a revival. The inaugural running is scheduled for October in South Africa’s Western Cape wine region, and to announce it, organizers brought out the big guns.

Former F1 world champion Jody Scheckter took the wheel of a 1952 Jaguar C-Type and lead a £10 million convoy of classics through London’s Mayfair district. South Africa’s ambassador in London, Dr. Zola Skweiyiya, rode shotgun. They were joined by a 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C Monza and a 1957 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France – one of only seven ever made. But that’s nothing compared to the 40 to 50 cars expected to take part in the full rally. In the meantime, you can check out the details in the press release after the jump and the photos in the gallery below.

  • Dubai Travel Hit by the Ash Cloud

DUBAI,UAE  The effect of the volcanic ash cloud coming from Iceland and hovering over Europe is affecting air travel across the globe. Including here in the Mideast air hub of Dubai, home to the biggest airline in the region, Emirates Airlines. Over 40,000 Emirates passengers have been effected so far, and dozens of flights.

Among those hit, the Fox News team traveling from an assignment in Yemen hoping to connect to London this Saturday.   Not until at least Monday, is the latest word from the Emirates web site.

And don’t even think of trying to do some strategic forward booking.  We tried, and an Emirates official told us it is blocking new reservations until May 5th! It will only look at re-booking passengers when the “no-fly” zone is lifted in Europe, and the threat to jet engines from the tiny volcanic particles is gone.

Other area airlines like Etihad, Gulf Air, and Qatar Air, all with a lot of traffic to and from the UK and Europe, are equally hard hit.

Dubai International Airport was a scene of congestion and frustration.  Waits at immigration counters for transiting passengers now grounded lasted at least an hour (we can attest to!).

It’s costing Emirates a million dollars a day just putting up thousands of stranded passengers.  And as of Saturday, the airline is not even helping out those caught out : They’re on their own

Hotels in Dubai are at the point of bursting. The place we’re staying at, the Jumeirah Beach Sheraton, boasts 256 rooms and we’re told is 100 per cent “plus” booked out. And its not taking any forward bookings either.

So, in the meantime, stranded travelers are making the best of it.  Enjoying clear blue Gulf skies…without a speck of ash in sight…for the time being!

  • Edwardsville’s Pink Slip Brigade

Upwards of 20,000 educators are expected to be laid-off this summer because of the state legislature’s inability to pass a fair funding bill. Almost 900 pink slipped members from the Edwardsville Regional Office are doing something about it. They have become what I call, The Pink Slip Brigade.

The Brigade’s goal? To impress on their legislators the devastation that is being caused by not passing a real budget.

I don’t use the word, devastation, lightly. The stories that Brigade members are sharing describe how the failure to pass a tax increase will affect all aspects of their lives. Their personal stories include information about their families and their personal finances.

These members’ stories go deeper, showing that their loss impacts everyone in their communities. These cuts affect the quality of education in areas that are already struggling with low real estate tax revenues and other financial problems. The cuts will grow into a downward spiral as those losing their jobs stop shopping in local stores, increase debt, and, ultimately loose their houses through foreclosure. What is really ironic is that, as their problems increase, so will their needs for assistance from the state, putting more pressure on the state’s finances. Hopefully, the legislators will finally realize that the impact is not only on the individuals, but on all of the legislator’s constituents.

Each Brigade member is scheduled to call their legislator 3 times. The first call went out when the pink slips were handed out. The script went something like this:

“I live in your district along with my spouse and one child. My mortgage is $1200 per month and I have to pay a $500 per month car payment. I also am paying back my student loan at $250 per month. I will be out of work May 26 and, after that, will have no income to tax. You are my representative. I need your help.”

The next time the member calls will be on his or her last day of work. The new script will say, “I am your constituent and today was my last day of work. The script will go on as before, ending again with, “You are my representative. I need your help.”

Assuming that the member is still out of work on the first day of school, s/he will call one more time saying, “I wanted to bring you up to date. I am your constituent. I was laid off from my teaching/support staff position in May and I am still not employed. You are my representative. I need your help. ”

The Edwardsville folk hope that such actions will keep the school funding issue on the front burner for their legislators through the summer. It is a simple plan, and can be followed anywhere in the state. Have you received your pink slip? Why not call your legislator now to let them know about it?

For more information, call the Edwardsville Regional Office

  • Former Blackwater executives indicted on weapons charges

[JURIST] A federal grand jury on Friday indicted five former Blackwater executives on charges of weapons violations and lying to criminal investigators. The 15-count indictment charges five former executives, including former president Gary Jackson, with giving away certain weapons to the King of Jordan to curry favor and then lying on federal forms about where the weapons went. The indictment also charges the executives with trying to hide weapons purchases by acting through an intermediary, avoiding regulations on the export of short-barreled rifles, and making false statements to investigators. Jackson and other Blackwater officials have said that federal officials knew of the weapons purchases for years but did nothing.
In February, the Iraqi government ordered approximately 250 former Blackwater employees to leave Iraq. The government was reacting to a US federal court’s December decision to dismiss charges against five former Blackwater employees accused of killing 17 innocent Iraqi civilians in 2007 because information against the defendants was obtained unconstitutionally. Earlier that month, the New York Times reported that the US Department of Justice is investigating Blackwater, now known as Xe, to determine whether the company bribed the Iraqi government to allow Blackwater to continue operating in Iraq following the 2007 shootings. In January, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki announced that Iraq will file lawsuits against Blackwater for the 2007 killings in both US and Iraqi courts. US Vice-President Joe Biden has said that the DOJ will appeal the dismissal. Blackwater ceased operations in Baghdad in May 2009 when its security contracts for the protection of US diplomats expired.

  • SyncMyPix pulls Facebook contact photos to Android

Before I start this review, I’d like to give a little note: those looking to download this app will have to do so from this link.

When I found out that my Android phone had the ability to have a picture assigned to each contact, this presented me with a unique problem: I tend to be really lazy. At the moment I have roughly 97 entries on my phone; finding a photo for each one of these people, uploading it and then attaching it to their contact would be a taxing experience.

Thankfully I managed to find Syncmypix. Recommended to me by name only, I found it after a bit of a hunt (explained more below). What it does is sync with your Facebook contacts and automatically attaches a person’s profile photo to their Android contact card if it shares the same name. This allows for a one-touch sync which (theoretically) allows for a lot less stress.

    What I like:
    – The ability to make a timed sync so that photos stay current. This can be changed based on your preferences to how often you want Syncmypix running in the background.
    – A one-touch “sync” button.
    – Cheap as free and open source
    – The ability to attach a photo to a contact if the name doesn’t match up. This is achieved by long-pressing a contact within the scan’s results. This is great for friends who have the habit of using middle names as last names, or like one friend of mine, has their last name spelled backwards on their Facebook profile.
    – A “Results” menu, which stores the data from the last sync. This saves a lot of time when you don’t feel like re-scanning everyone when you just need one picture.

    What I don’t:
    – How hard it is to find. It took a bit of Google searching to find this app. It isn’t on the marketplace, and AndroLib’s QR code doesn’t link to it, either. I had to find the source page and download the APK from there; the QR code in this article links to the correct place.
    – Some contacts are extremely fickle. Some just refuse to sync, no matter how similar the names are. I find it best to fix this problem if you have the “Crop” option enabled in options. If you assign a picture to a contact manually and it doesn’t ask you to crop the photo, there’s a good chance it isn’t going to successfully attach to the contact card.
    – I had some problems using the Facebook Connect menu when the app asked for permission to use my account. I think this was more of a browser issue that one with the application; clicking the “Login” button just didn’t seem to want to send the request.

SyncMyPix is a great app that does what a lot of us don’t want to do. I’d think of it as an essential service for the Android because it automates a normally-mundane process; I think if more developers made apps with this statement in mind, we’d see a lot more functionally useful offerings.

Now, if only it weren’t a pain to find…

It is no secret that AMD has been struggling to compete with Intel’s offerings. This is just the kind of shot in the arms AMD desperately needs. In fact, a partnership with AMD would be good news for everybody. It would offer Apple some bargaining chips when dealing with Intel. Moreover, it would provide Apple, if they are interested, the opportunity to launch lower priced netbooks. AMD’s offerings can also come in handy in Mac Mini and lower end models of MacBook.

I like the cartoon, though I’m not a huge fan of Scott Adams himself; his creationist/Intelligent Design leanings make that difficult. Some people say he’s a gadfly, just trying to get people to think. But I’ve never found his arguments persuasive, and they’re generally just repetitions of some of the more basic (and easily debunked) ID claims. PZ Myers has dealt with him any number of times, and a web search will yield all sorts of interesting results.

Life is full of such conflicts; Jenny McCarthy is actually very funny when she’s not trying to infect the world with measles, Oprah does a lot of actual good work in contrast to her support of McCarthy, and Fred Phelps… no, my mistake. Phelps is just 100% awful.

  • 4 Defenses Goldman May Use To Fight the SEC Lawsuit

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed an explosive complaint (.pdf) yesterday against investment banking titan Goldman Sachs. The civil lawsuit alleges that the bank defrauded investors who it sold a synthetic collateralized debt obligation (CDO) it created. Naturally, Goldman vehemently denies wrongdoing, having released the follow one-sentence statement:

The SEC’s charges are completely unfounded in law and fact and we will vigorously contest them and defend the firm and its reputation.

Yet, through reading the SEC’s complaint, the case sounds rather strong. So how might Goldman choose to respond?

    Brief Synopsis

The SEC lays out the facts (which Goldman may dispute) as follows. A hedge fund manager named John Paulson wanted to short the subprime mortgage market in early 2007. He asked Goldman Sachs to create a short position that he could purchase. In order to do so, Goldman had to create a long position to balance it out. A Goldman banker named Fabrice Tourre took on the deal. He sought to create a synthetic CDO for that long position to sell to investors. To do so, he knew he needed a seemingly neutral 3rd party collateral agent to make investors feel comfortable that the assets selected which the CDO referenced were sound. Goldman hired ACA Management for that job, and informed the company that Paulson would be purchasing the first-loss (long equity) piece of the CDO. As a result, ACA allowed Paulson to play a major role in selecting the assets, since it thought their interests were aligned. Of course, Paulson intentionally picked the assets he thought would do poorly instead, as he wanted to short the bonds. After ACA and Paulson agreed on a pool of assets, Goldman sold the resulting bonds to investors, informing them that ACA had selected the assets, without mentioning Paulson’s major influence.

The SEC says Goldman and Tourre intentionally misled both investors and ACA.

    Blame ACA

One tactic Goldman might take is to blame ACA for believing that Paulson’s interests were aligned with its own. The SEC documents e-mails in the complaint showing that Goldman told ACA that Paulson would purchase a portion of the deal’s first-loss equity piece. But the bank could claim that ACA had no way of knowing whether Paulson would ultimately follow through with his agreement. As a result, ACA’s poor assumption was to blame — not Goldman.

The fate of this defense depends whether the court is convinced that ACA acted irresponsibly by allowing Paulson to have an influence on the pool, despite Goldman’s assurances that he would be an equity investor. If the evidence is strong that Goldman intentionally misled ACA — and it appears to be — then this argument might not be very compelling.

    Blame Paulson

Goldman could attempt to say that Paulson misled the bank too. Goldman could say that it thought Paulson did want the equity piece, and claim it thought he would go long on the deal. Proving Goldman knew Paulson wanted to short the deal from the start could be challenging — I don’t see any indisputable evidence in the complaint to support this. But it’s extremely implausible that Goldman could have thought Paulson wanted go net-long on the deal. The entire purpose of the transaction was for Paulson to obtain a short position.

A court will probably have trouble finding this argument sound as well. Any reasonable person who understands how markets work would conclude that Goldman must have understood Paulson’s strategy, or else it would never have created the deal in the first place.

    Blame Tourre

The bank could claim that Tourre was a sort of rogue banker who was acting improperly without their knowledge or consent. Given that he was only a 28-year-old vice-president, this seems a little far-fetched. Is supervision so lax at Goldman that his managing directors were unaware of the details of how he was doing deals? Bank management must have ultimately signed off on most of this stuff, so his managers couldn’t have been completely oblivious to the transaction they stamped Goldman’s name on.

This defense seems thin. Ultimately, the bank is responsible for the actions of its employees. If Tourre is found to have acted improperly, Goldman should also be held accountable — unless it can be shown that he misled Goldman management as well.

    Blame Investors

Finally, Goldman could attempt to fall back on the old “buyer beware” defense. If investors had done sufficient due diligence, they would have discovered that the deal’s bonds were based on bogus collateral. While there’s a kernel of truth in that argument, it only holds up if the seller discloses accurate information. In this case, Goldman may have intentionally misled investors by claiming that the collateral was chosen by an independent third party. In reality, it was heavily influenced — and partially cherry-picked — by Paulson.

The court’s view here will probably hinge on whether it believes Goldman’s disclosure to investors explaining the collateral selection was sufficient. A legal judgment will be needed to determine whether Paulson’s degree of involvement in the collateral picking process was material to investors.

It is therefore also no surprise that they have backed down pretty quickly and removed that part of the video, and has tweeted via their Safer Online Twitter account that they do not endorse sexting in any way.

While we can appreciate that perception is very important for a phone aimed at younger people and which in many cases will have to be paid for by parents, we cant help but feel that Microsoft had an opportunity to gain some Cool points with exactly their target market and completely dropped the ball.
