  • Petraeus Commemorates 65th Anniversary of Concentration-Camp Liberation

In an eloquent address at the Capitol Rotunda sponsored by the U.S. Holocaust Museum, Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of U.S. troops in the Middle East and South Asia, honored the survivors of the Nazi death camps and the U.S. soldiers who helped liberate them 65 years ago. “We approach life with fewer illusions, with hope, to be sure, but with sobriety as well,” Petraeus reflected on the “indelible mark” left upon humanity by the Holocaust. “We are wiser for having seen how order can bend to the ways of terrible men.” Survivors, family members of survivors, and 120 veterans of the U.S. Army’s European campaign during World War II looked on, as did members of Congress and the Obama administration.

Petraeus’s remarks did not touch on politics, appropriately for the occasion, but there were a few subtle undertones relevant to contemporary events. He quoted Dwight Eisenhower’s order to record the scenes at the camps, as if to “look into the future and foresee a day” when some would “deny an undeniable historical truth,” as the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has repeatedly done in speeches. Petraeus’ reference to the Holocaust’s instructive lessons to the consequences of “when demonic dictators are able to hijack a country” appeared resonant in that regard.

The general recently found his comments about the relationship between the persistence of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and U.S. interests in the Middle East misrepresented and attacked by Abe Foxman, the head of the Anti-Defamation League. Petraeus has not responded. But his speech’s reminder that Holocaust survivors and their descendants have “enriched our lives immeasurably” and “helped build a nation that stands as one of our great allies” are perhaps sufficient rebuke.

Before Petraeus spoke at the ceremony, Amb. Michael Oren, Israel’s envoy to Washington, addressed the crowd, and made a point of favorably quoting President Obama’s conception of the “unbreakable” bond between the U.S. and Israel, a gesture that seemed to signal a diminishment of diplomatic tensions between the two allies over the peace process.

  • Blockbuster CEO Slams Netflix Streaming Selection

With one foot in the grave already, Blockbuster is doing everything it can to keep from being dragged down into bankruptcy hell. From making risky deals with studios to get a 4-week head start on new titles to considering getting into the video game biz, they’re throwing everything against the wall in the hopes that something sticks. And in a new interview, the company’s CEO takes aim at the video-streaming service offered by Netflix.

“You tell me: Do you want to watch The Blind Side or Herbie Goes to Cancun?” Keyes asked, referring to what some have called Netflix’s less-than-stellar on-demand offerings. “Our customer demand is 60% to 80% for new releases. The subscription model does not translate effectively to what our customers want to see when they want to see them.”

(Note: I would much rather watch Herbie Goes to Cancun. Too bad it doesn’t exist.)

Keyes also admits that the closing of many Blockbuster retail outlets is essential to the changing model of the video rental business:

Stores were once a convenience and that’s why we had so many. That has now been supplanted by two other even more convenient forms of access… Here’s an analogy: If I want to buy an obscure book title, I’ll go to Amazon.com. But if I want to browse and see what’s new, I will go to Barnes & Noble.

Whaddaya think? Is Blockbuster’s focus on new releases going to help them survive? Or has the home market moved on beyond the “gotta have it the day it comes out” mentality?

Blockbuster CEO Jim Keyes still sees movie-rental opportunities [L.A. Times]

  • Is Our Scientists Learning? | The Intersection

In my talks, I often discuss the different groups who came to meet with me when I worked on Capitol Hill with regard to who was most effective. On science related issues, the general breakdown fell into two categories (with exceptions): Scientists from universities or NGO’s would usually show up in my office with a briefing binder as thick as a phone book. There would be a lot of charts, p-values, figures, and complicated concepts. Most didn’t talk to me, but at me. and the take home message would be different than that of the other scientists I met the previous hour on the same subject. Special interest groups were frequently very well organized. They spoke with a common theme and brought articulate speakers. Rather than stop in our office, they usually hosted large and well attended briefings, supplying easy to digest hardcover books with titles like ‘climate change conspiracy.’ Typically they were funny and made references to Michael Crichton’s science fiction. Perhaps most importantly, they provided a free boxed lunches and held long Q&As to engage the audience. Both types introduced themselves as the “honest broker” of scientific information, but the latter often made the stronger impression with staffers. Now removed from …

Tweets Near MeTweets Near Me Logo SynergeTech Solutions has recently released a small application called Tweets Near Me. Originally the application was the start of a much larger project involving Twitter. When that project was cancelled, SynergeTech Solutions decided to release what was completed for free.Tweets Near Me displays a stream of Twitter status updates within a specified radius. To determine your physical location, the application uses cell tower data to triangulate your position – just like Google Maps does. This means that it works without GPS! You can also filter by keyword.

It is a simple application but can be pretty fun and you can’t beat free. You can learn more and download Tweets Near Me at the SynergeTech Solutions website.

  • PSA: New Virus Found On Windows Mobile 6.5

This is a heads up for anyone running Windows Mobile 6.5:
A little over a month ago, an xda-developers member reported that his phone was waking up on its own and attempting to dial out international numbers. Soon after, other users started reporting the same thing, and after some investigation, it turned out that a virus was to blame. The virus is particularly alarming because it has the potential to cost the phone owner a lot of money.

The virus comes in the form of the game “3D Anti-Terrorist”. DO NOT INSTALL THIS GAME.

If you have installed the game, or if you have noticed any funky international numbers appearing in your call history, there are instructions to remove the virus available here.

The original thread containing all the investigative work that lead to the discovery, can be found here.

  • HTC, Verizon officially announce Droid Incredible, available April 29 for $199

Verizon HTC Droid IncredibleVerizon HTC Droid Incredible

It was all over but the press release. For weeks now we’ve seen information about the HTC Incredible — now officially the Verizon Droid Incredible — pour out of the woodwork. And now, it’s real.

For all intents and purposes, what we’re looking at is the HTC Desire with Verizon branding. Same 3.7-inch 480×800-pixel AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, same HTC Sense user interface, same trackpad instead of a trackball. Same 1GHz Snapdragon processor. The camera’s been upped to 8 megapixels, and there are 8 gigabytes of internal memory for music, photos and video.

But what about the Verizon Nexus One? Make no mistake, this is not it. The Nexus One is Google’s baby. The Droid Incredible is Verizon’s. And at this point, it’s poised to do major battle with Sprint’s Evo 4G come summertime. The Incredible will arrive first, slated for preorders on April 19 (that’s Monday) and will be in stores on April 29. Pricing is set at $199 after two-year contract and a $100 rebate.

We’ll have plenty more coverage of the Verizon Droid Incredible as we near launch. In the meantime, check out the full presser and specs after the break. And in the meantime, head into our Droid Incredible forums to chat your little heads off.

  • 5 Secrets To Get Better Verizon Wireless Customer Service

Here’s 5 things you might not know about Verizon Wireless that could also help you be more successful when dealing with customer service and customer service issues:

    5. Each region owns and manages their own call centers and sets their own policies.
    4. The Northeast is more liberal upgrading within contract.
    3. Mid-west is more easy about warranty replacements.
    2. Wherever your problem happened, that’s where you should complain about it. So if it happened in-store, speak to the manager of that store. If it happened on the customer service line, call back and ask for a supervisor.
    1. Verizon gives all the store managers cell phones, so if they’re not in the store at the time, ask for their direct dial number.

Do you have a Verizon customer service secret you need to get off your chest? Open up in the comments.

  • Delahaye USA to debut “Bella Figura” Bugnotti Coupe at Pebble Beach

Delahaye USA Bugnotti Coupe – Click above for high-res image gallery

There was time in the late ’70s and early ’80s in America when a few misguided industrious souls decided to recreate some of the most iconic shapes in motoring history. Kit cars with shapes emulating classic Bugatti, Delahaye, Auburn, Pierce-Arrow, Mercedes, Bentley and Rolls-Royce designs flourished, many poorly made and based on cars like the Buick Regal or Lincoln Town Car. With the originals selling for six, seven or even eight figures, it wasn’t surprising that anyone would want a budget alternative, but the offerings were generally more of an insult to the originals than a tribute.

Flash forward a few decades and you’ll now find companies like Delahaye USA taking up a similar charge. Rather than offering unfortunate fiberglass bodies for existing vehicles, however, the NJ company is building modern interpretations of some of those classic designs, with the intent to show what those legendary designers of yore might be building today. Take their “Bella Figura” Bugnotti Coupe above, for instance. Inspired by the 1937 Bugatti Type 57S, it’s said to be a tribute to Ettore Bugatti’s son, Jean. At least as it shows in these renderings, we think it is beyond gorgeous.

The company has been showing off a 1/4-scale model of the project at certain shows and concours recently, but will have a full-size version to display for the first time this Fall. The full-scale carbon fiber body is set to debut at Retro Auto Aug. 13-15, in Pebble Beach, during the annual classic car festivities in Northern California. Delahaye USA plans to offer a turnkey version of the coupe on a custom chassis with an alloy body for $450,000, while a clear-coated or painted carbon fiber version will sell for around $250,000. Plans are to make a targa-style roof and drophead version as well. Check out the small gallery below and be sure to click over to the Delahaye USA site to see some of their other beautiful projects.

  • Yahoo! “100 Movies To See Before You Die”

Yahoo! Movies is chiming in on the Great Movie Debate with a new list — “100 Movies To See Before You Die: The Modern Classics.” The list is anything by a regurgitated roll call of cinema classics like The Wizard of Oz and Casablanca– the site has put together a collection of 100 great films released in the last 20 years.

“From big budget blockbusters, to breakout independent films, to discoveries from around the world, we have seen exciting and groundbreaking cinematic work created in the last two decades. For our second installment of our “100 Movies to See Before You Die,” we decided to highlight these “Modern Classics” made between 1990 and 2009. Like our first list, we chose movies based on their artistry, originality, and pure cinematic entertainment. And even we were surprised by the results.”

The list features hit films, cult classics, and some of the most innovative animated hits to grace the silver screen: including The Dark Knight, Inglorious Basterds, Good Fellas, Beauty And The Beast WALL-E, and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy. Even flicks like Eve’s Bayou and Thelma & Louise earn nods.

  • More Shaking in SoCal & Baja

Earthquake country– brace yourself. Southern California and Baja are experiencing a significant increase in seismic activity.

The region’s faults were relatively quiet for about 10 years, but not in 2010.

So far this year, there have been more than 70 earthquakes greater than magnitude 4.

That’s more quakes than in any other year of this decade, and more than in the last two years combined.

Scientists are studying the numbers, and can only theorize as to what’s behind the uptick.

Turns out, we can blame much of this shaking on just one quake: The 7.2 temblor that hit Mexicali, in Baja, California, a few weeks ago.

It was followed by more than a thousand aftershocks, including dozens of very strong– the region was rocked just yesterday by a 4.4 temblor. In fact, that that one event, the Mexicali quake, accounts for more than 50 of the 70 mag-4-quakes we’ve seen so far this year.

Dr. Lucy Jones with the USGS says “everytime a big earthquake happens, everytime any earthquake happens, it makes another earthquake more likely, and if it’s a really big earthquake, it makes lots of earthquakes more likely.”

Scientists also say major earthquakes tend to occur in cycles, and that Southern California’s last cycle happened about a decade ago.

The region was hit with the 7.3 Landers quake in 1992, and the deadly Northridge Quake in 1994. This recent surge could mean we’re heading into a more active seismic period, with bigger earthquakes on the way.

There’s also the possibility that a major quake could trigger activity in another fault, perhaps one that was ready to starting shifting. That could be significant because the San Andreas fault, the source of some of California’s most catastrophic quakes, is long overdue for a major event.

Scientists say there’s no cause for panic, and no reason to think that the so-called “Big One” is any more likely to hit: earthquakes are still impossible to predict.

    Here’s the bottom line:

If the Southern California-Baja region is headed into a new period of siesmic activity, not only will we see more earthquakes, chances are, we’ll see stronger ones.

  • BlackBerry Bold 9650 coming to US Cellular?

If US Cellular’s mail-in rebate form turns out to be correct, then the nation’s sixth largest wireless carrier could be picking up the BlackBerry Bold 9650.  Complete with Wi-Fi, a trackpad, and OS 5.0, it’s a nice upgrade from the BlackBerry Tour 9630.  What’s more, the device includes a $70 rebate.

The rebate runs from April 16th through July 15th, so the window of opportunity (as I like to call it) is rather large.  That being said, it would be rather humorous if US Cellular (a regional wireless carrier, mind you) picked up the device before Verizon Wireless or Sprint.  For those on US Cellular (or those contemplating a switch) – does the BlackBerry Bold 9650 interest you, or are you sticking with your Tour until something newer comes out?  Hit the comments and let me know!

  • Hyundai and Rhys Millen Racing Team Up to Break Pikes Peak Record

Rhys Millen has been drifting and racing Hyundai vehicles for several years now, and this June he hopes to set a new record at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, a record once held by his father, Rod. The current record for the 12.42-mile course is 10:01.41, set by Nobuhiro “Monster” Tajima and Suzuki in 2007. Millen hopes to be the first driver to break the 10-minute barrier.

He’ll drive an all-new car dubbed the RMR / Hyundai Genesis PM580, a teaser image of which is shown above. Full info on the car will be revealed April 19, but we know from the preliminary entry list that it’s four-wheel-drive and will compete in the Unlimited class. Knowing that, and judging from the last RMR Genesis we saw, the PM580 won’t bear much resemblance to the Hyundai in your driveway.

  • Consumer and Investor Sentiment Rises to Pre-Crisis Levels

Americans are feeling a lot better about the U.S. economy this week, according to a pair of indices tracked by Rasmussen. Investors are very bullish on the recovery. Separately, consumer sentiment has also risen. Both indices are at their highest level since early September 2008 — prior to the climax of the financial crisis.

The first statistic, the Rasmussen Investor Index, measures the daily economic confidence of investors. It rose on Thursday to 103.2, its highest level since early September 2008. It was as low as 52.5 in 2009, but reached 150.9 in 2004.

Rasmussen’s Consumer Index increased to 86.3 today. This is also the highest it has been since September 2008. It fell to 54.7 in 2009 and peaked at 127 in 2004. While it’s hard to strictly compare these two indices, investors’ confidence appears to be relatively higher than consumers’ sentiment. Given how much better the stock market has done than the broader economy, this makes sense.

This news is important because it shows that investors and consumers have psychologically moved beyond the crisis. Sentiment is a very important indicator in economics: it reveals how much money consumers are willing to spend and the amount of cash investors are willing to put into the market. Both actions are necessary for things to improve. So barring additional unforeseen negative economic developments, this trend is another sign that the recovery is underway.

  • US Military Wants an All-Terrain, Hybrid, Transforming Flying Car

I love the Transformers; but not the terrible, loud, and innuendo-laced Micheal Bay version. I’m talking old school 80’s toys made popular by the Transformers cartoon. Those guys were awesome, though I was always disappointed when the Decepticons were defeated, not because the Autobots were better, but because Megatron was an inept leader at best.

Someone in the military must be a fan of Transformers too. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has revealed plans for an all-terrain wheeled vehicle that can transform into an airplane and go as far as 250 miles on a tank of gas. Awesome.

The military has a history of hair-brained defense schemes, but this sounds like one that might actually make it to production one day. The design calls for a VTOL, or Vertical Take Off and Landing vehicle, sort of like the Osprey pictured to the left. It would also be about the size of two Hummers parked bumper-to-bumper with a price limitation of $43 million. So far, so good, right?
