Aptera invited us down to the Palomar Airport in stunningly beautiful Carlsbad, CA to show off the latest iteration of their three-wheeled, high-mileage electric car, the 2010 2e. Before the fairly-close-to-production-ready car was driven into Hanger #11, CEO Paul Wilbur gave a state of the Aptera union address, explaining why the company has had its head down for the past several months. After all, a year ago you couldn’t causally glance at a magazine or newspaper without seeing the white three-wheeler. But lately? Not so much.

According to Wilbur, this has been intentional. The first reason is due to funding. “2009 was difficult,” Wilbur explained, especially for companies seeking start-up funding. The other reason is that Aptera has been, “Engineering.” Meaning that they wanted to have a more finished, production-ready vehicle to show off to the media and customers. “We have to get it right the first time,” Wilbur explained. Going further, he stressed the fact that Aptera doesn’t want to go down in history as the next Yugo, DeLorean or Tucker. The questions then are, does Aptera have the necessary funding and is the car they showed off today actually production ready? Well… make the jump to find out.

  • Air Force Solicitations – April 2010

air-forceAdvanced Liquid Rocket Engine Stability Technology – High Fidelity Modeling (ALREST-HFM) – The Aerophysics Branch of the Space and Missiles Propulsion Division of the Air Force Research Laboratory is interested in the general area of advanced liquid rocket engine combustion stability technology. The interest is both in relevant technology as it impacts current programs as well as future technology as it will impact future programs. Particular interest is in projecting future technology as it will exist approximately six years from the date of this BAA, and to perform work preparatory to making use of this future technology.  Experiments for the production of validation data or the development of sub-models which will be needed by then are also of interest. Preparing for longer term technology in such a way that technology of nearer term value is also produced is considered to be of great value.  Finally, there is also considered to be a need for creative innovations in the combustion instability area, including but not limited to innovative approaches for suppressing combustion instabilities, and approaches for facilitating advanced designs.  Total Funding: $1.35M.  Eligibility: All.  Proposal Due Date: June 1, 2010.

    ————————————————————————————–

Reusable Booster System (RBS) Pathfinder – The Air Force has identified the RBS concept as a promising approach to meet its future space-lift needs.  The RBS consists of an autonomous, reusable, rocket-powered first stage with an expendable upper stage stack.  The reusable first stage launches vertically and carries the expendable stack to the staging point.  From the staging point, the reusable first stage returns directly to the launch base, landing aircraft-style on a runway.  To return the booster to the launch base, the Government is considering a rocket-back maneuver.  An important goal of the RBS Pathfinder program is to explore the feasibility and design space for the autonomous rocket-back maneuver.  To the extent practical, the RBS Pathfinder program should also demonstrate other important technologies, processes and system attributes (TPSAs) that are expected to be included on the operational RBS. An Industry Day for RBS Pathfinder will be held 11-13 May 2010.  An overview briefing will be held 11 May 2010 in the Gordon Conference Center (GCC), Los Angeles AFB, CA.  Small individual sessions in Aerospace A-9 Bldg, Los Angeles AFB, CA, will be available with the RBS Pathfinder Program team on 12-13 May 2010.  Pre-registration is required by May 2, 2010 to attend the industry day events.  RBS Total Funding Phase I: $4.5M; Award Ceiling: $1.5M.  Total Funding Phase II-IV: $28.5M.  They are requesting comments on this draft BAA.  Comment are due May 3, 2010.

  • Hedge Fund Manager Falcone Buys Stake In Palm

    Palm Pre

Hedge fund manager Philip Falcone has reported that it owns a 9.48 percent stake in Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Palm, which has reportedly put itself up for sale after its new smartphones failed to take off over the past few months.

A regulatory document filed today at the SEC reveals that Falcone’s Harbinger Capital owns 16 million shares in Palm (NSDQ: PALM). The stock, which has been wildly up and down over the past few months, closed today at $5.32, up 3.1 percent. The filing said Harbinger owned these shares as of Monday, which is the day after the report appeared that Palm had hired investment bankers to seek potential suitors.

Falcone ranks among the most successful hedge fund managers, who in recent years has been selling off his 20 percent stake in The New York Times (NYSE: NYT), and became famous for betting against subprime mortgages in 2007, Reuters reports.

  • Harbinger Capital Buys a 9.48% Stake in Palm

    harbinger capital palm stock deal
Palm Inc. announced today via a Schedule 13G SEC filing that Harbinger Capital Partners has purchased 16 million shares of common stock, representing a 9.48% passive stake in the company. Harbinger is a NYC based private hedge fund run by billionaire investor Philip A. Falcone. The hedge fund also owns large stakes in the New York Times Company, Cleveland-Cliffs and various satellite communications companies.

The investment was noteworthy not only for its size but also because this was made via the open market on already available shares. As such the common stock does not give Harbinger any special voting shares, (unlike Elevations deal) but it does represent nearly 10% of Palm’s 168,755,045 shares outstanding as of March 26, 2010. Palm stock was up today on the news, but closed up a modest .16 (~3%) at 5.36.

  • Game Gripper Gamepad for Pixi in the Works

    game gripper palm pixi
One of the most surprising and relatively unheralded attributes of WebOS is its prowess for 3D gaming due to its combination of accelerated graphics hardware and APIs within the OS and its SDK. However, as any iPhone gamer can attest, “conventional” console-style titles played with large onscreen buttons can be clunky and accelerometer movements are tiring and imprecise. Some titles, especially action games and emulators, require the feel of a conventional directional pad. Thankfully, a new product called the Game Gripper is in the works for the Palm Pixi. No pricing or release date is mentioned but the current Droid version is priced at a reasonable $14.99 + $5 S/H.

Currently, a version of the Game Gripper is already in production and available for sale for the Motorola Droid, with versions for the Motorola Devour and BlackBerry Bold also hinted at in addition to the Pixi. Due to the slider design of the Pre form factor, this model is apparently ill-suited to any kind of snap-on controller, despite its improved 3D capabilities relative to its Pixi sibling.

  • Spy Shots: Next-gen Audi S8 may boast 620 HP from Lambo-derived V10

2011 Audi S8 – Click above for high-res image gallery

When the Audi S8 was nixed from the automaker’s lineup late last year, the news produced a collective sigh around Autoblog Towers. Audi’s largest, most powerful sedan held a special place in our hearts, but redemption appears to be right around corner – the Nürburgring’s Carousel, to be exact.

With the introduction of the standard A8 in the rearview mirror, Audi has begun work on the S-ified variant of its stately saloon, and like the RS6, it’s rumored to be powered by a Lamborghini Gallardo-derived V10, with a duo of turbochargers hanging from the exhaust manifolds.

The output of the next S8 will jump from the outgoing model’s 444 horsepower to somewhere north of 600 hp, with torque boosted from around 400 pound-feet to upwards of 550 lb-ft of twist.

Although these spy shots don’t provide a clear glimpse of the stylistic upgrades, expect a more chiseled front fascia, lower ride height and modified rear diffuser. Quad tailpipes hint at the 5.2-liter twin-turbo beast within, while massive stoppers are expected to be framed by 20- or 21-inch wheels.

We’re expecting the S8 to make its debut sometime later this year or early in 2011, with sales beginning in the middle of next year.

  • Mobile Gaming Shifts Dramatically To Smartphones In One Year

    Pacman on the G1

It’s pretty logical that a phone that can support a higher quality of game play will be used to play more games, but the rate at which it is happening is fairly shocking.

ComScore (NSDQ: SCOR) reported today that the number of people playing games on a lower-end feature phone plummeted by 35 percent over the past year, while the population of smartphone users playing games ballooned by 60 percent. Overall, the shift led the industry to fall by a painful 13 percent. The report compared the three month average ended in February 2010 to the same period a year earlier.

We’ve already seen some evidence of these trends with companies, like Glu Mobile (NSDQ: GLUU) and others, shifting their production to smartphone games as revenues have dropped over the past year. While many have struggled with the change, the good news is that despite the drop, comScore sees the overall adoption of games increasing with the shift to smartphones. “We can expect to see a profound increase in adoption of this activity, both in terms of audience size and overall engagement,” said comScore’s Mark Donovan.

    Some supporting evidence:

—Smartphone users are three times more likely than feature phone owners to play games once a month.
—Smartphone users are five times as likely to play games almost every day.
—A third of smartphone owners have installed five or more games, while less than 1 percent of feature phone subscribers have installed that many.
—13 percent of smartphone owners play a game almost every day vs. 2.4 percent of feature-phone users.

  • Modest Success Is Still Success For Indie Bands

A few months ago, we wrote about the band Pomplamoose for its unique way of making a living by selling its music digitally. The musical duo playfully connected with fans, sold homemade soap, and even encouraged listeners to give goats to charity. More recently, the band has gained more attention and was accepted into YouTube’s Musicians Wanted program where YouTube offers a 50/50 ad revenue split with independent artists who use Google’s video platform. Pomplamoose fan Joseph Johnson also points us to an interview with the band in which they describe their creative process and talk a bit about how they manage without the backing of a major label:

Ms. DAWN: I mean, if you can’t just do it all yourself, then you do need help. If, for example, you’re somebody who writes songs, like Lady Gaga, and you need everything, you know, that’s going to make you Lady Gaga, then you need a big, fat label. But if you’re just a band, I don’t think we’re in an era anymore where you need that sort of major backing.

Pomplamoose admits that the band doesn’t cash $10 million royalty checks for its music, but that its two singers make a modest living doing what they enjoy doing. They don’t play in clubs too much and haven’t gone on tour because it’s a lot of work for them to set up live shows. Actually, given the way they record their music videos, they don’t really know how to play their own songs in a “normal” linear way without editing and remixing. And interestingly, they seem to be making enough to pay for the mechanical rights for the songs they cover.

Mr. CONTE: … we make sure that we have all our ducks in a row. We bought mechanical licenses to all of our covers before we put them on iTunes. So it’s all legit and legal.

So despite criticism that says bands like OK Go have failed and can’t make it without a label, the reality is that more bands are able to create more music — and are getting paid in a variety of different ways. Selling plastic disks isn’t the only way to make a living. Touring isn’t the only way to make a living. Selling T-shirts isn’t the only way to make a living. And Google ads certainly aren’t going to save every struggling indie band, either. In fact, there is no silver bullet for how a band can support itself. Simply put, the barrier to become a famous band has dropped considerably, but that doesn’t guarantee success — however, it makes it a lot easier for a much broader array of musicians to try to become professionals doing what they enjoy.

Ladies and Gents, say hello to the new Alfa Romeo Giulietta. Then say goodbye. Because although Alfa Romeo says this car is slated to reach “all major markets,” apparently that doesn’t include North America.

Following its public unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show last month, Alfa has finally released full details and a whole slew of photos of the new five-door sport-hatch. And whether it makes it Stateside or not, this stands to be a pivotal, make-it or break-it product for the stoic Italian marque that celebrates its centenary this year.

  • What’s So Hot About the New MacBook Pros? The Stuff You Can’t See

Between packing up to move apartments and keeping an eye on Twitter’s Chirp conference, I’ve been playing around with a new 15-inch Macbook Pro, one of the many new laptops introduced by Apple earlier this week. The 15-inch devices, which use Intel’s i5 and i7 processors while the 13-inch Macbook Pro uses the Intel Core 2 Duo chip, look virtually no different than they did before, with unibody styling and the same screen size, weight and number of ports. The only visible change is in the design of the mag-safe power connector, which is now clearly inspired by the MacBook Air charger.

The real change in these new laptops is under the hood — in the stuff you can’t see. It all starts with the integrated (Nvidia’s 320M) and discrete (Nvidia’s GeForce 330M GT) graphics chips, which can be found in both the 15- and 17-inch machines. What Apple has done in this most recent update to its line-up is make switching between two graphics modes automatic, depending on the task at hand. For instance, a simple application such as Mail or Safari by default uses the embedded/integrated graphics engine, while more graphics-intensive apps such as Premiere or Aperture automatically switch to the more muscular graphics chips.

So what’s the big deal about this? First, you get a smoother performance. But the big impact is on the battery life of these laptops. While the previous generation of MacBook Pros used Nvidia’s 9400M integrated graphics engine, the new line-up uses the new Nvidia 320M. The old chip had 16 cores while the new 320M has 48. And yet the 320M, despite being more muscular (it provides an 80 percent performance gain over the 9400M) is 40 percent more energy efficient. That boosts the battery life of the laptops by as much as three hours, which means Apple is offering total battery life of between 8 and 10 hours on the new MacBook Pros.

I’m pretty sure Apple made more tweaks than just that in order to get those 8-10 hours, but graphic chip optimization has to be right up there when it comes to squeezing more out of the battery. Maybe because it makes both the hardware and the operating system it’s able to get more from the batteries on its machines.

These tweaks reminded me of something uber-investor and Sun Microsystems co-founder Vinod Khosla, who will be speaking at our Green:Net conference on April 29, said recently — that by innovating around the internal combustion engine, we can substantially improve car mileage. Others believe that by writing more efficient, smarter software, more life can be squeezed from the current generation of battery technology. Apple is certainly proving that.

Oh and in case you were wondering about the machine itself, it is really really really fast. Much faster than my old MacBook Pro, which has an SSD drive and 8 GB of memory. Apps start in a blink of an eye and even iTunes works as if it was suddenly Barry Bonds. If you want to know anything specific, go ahead and ask me, and I will do my best to answer your questions.
