Look at her… Isn’t she beautiful? That is my grand-daughter Madeline. She just turned two.

What she doesn’t know is that even though she is only two, she already owes $330,000. So does her sister, her two brothers, her Mom and Dad, each of her cousins. In fact, each and every man, woman and child she meets and cracks that grin to owes that much money as well. Her family of Mom, her Dad and three siblings together owe almost $2 million. They can’t even afford to pay the interest on that debt.

As she enjoys her ice cream, she doesn’t realize that those of us responsible for our country have mortgaged her future for our own benefit. She doesn’t know that for the past 50 or so years we have shamelessly borrowed so much money for our current entitlements that we will never be able to pay it back, so we have left it for her to pay.

And while she had her second birthday, she couldn’t possibly know that the country has been embroiled in a fierce debate in the country over a bill whose expense will certainly dwarf those entitlements already pledged.

In short, she doesn’t know that our generation, out of greed and corruption, “killed the goose that laid the golden egg.”

    Spending Deficits and Unfunded Entitlements
There are two economic disasters facing the United States. One is the problem of annual spending deficits now approaching trillions of dollars. The far worse problem, however, is unfunded entitlements now approaching $100 trillion.

How will she pay it back? We don’t know. How will if affect her lifestyle? Don’t know that either. Will she live in a nice home as we do? Be able to get the education we did? Take vacations? Enjoy imported food? Have heat to stay warm in the winter? Air conditioning to stay cool in the summer? Electricity to keep food fresh?

We don’t know. We simply haven’t thought it out that far. We are the “me, me” generation. We want what we want, and we want it now.

So, Maddie… Sorry. We just couldn’t help ourselves. Sucks to be you.

  • Fox & Friends baselessly suggests Obama exacerbated decline in personal income

Fox & Friends baselessly suggests Obama exacerbated decline in personal income

Echoing a Washington Times article, Fox & Friends reported that personal income “has fallen 3.2 percent during President Obama’s term” and suggested Obama’s policies exacerbated the decline. In fact, this trend began in 2008 and has largely leveled off in the past year. Moreover, the figure they cite excludes “transfer” payments, including Social Security, Medicaid, food stamps, and unemployment insurance, which, if included, mean that personal income has increased by 1.2 percent since January 2009.

Fox & Friends: “Pay falls under president: Numbers reveal 3.2% decline”

Kilmeade: “Compare that” decline “to when President Bush took over, which was also a recession.” Fox News’ Peter Johnson Jr. stated during Fox & Friends: “There’s more disturbing news on the horizon now. Income in America has fallen 3.2 percent during President Obama’s term.” Co-host Brian Kilmeade said of the numbers, “Compare that to when President Bush took over, which was also a recession, income did fall but just .4 percent.” During the segment, Fox & Friends aired on-screen text stating, “Pay falls under president: Numbers reveal 3.2% decline.” From the April 13 edition of Fox News’ Fox & Friends:

JOHNSON: There’s more disturbing news on the horizon now. Income in America has fallen 3.2 percent during President Obama’s term.

KILMEADE: So since 2008, since he took over, income has fallen that much. Compare that to when President Bush took over, which was also a recession, income did fall but just .4 percent. So income falling and tax could be increasing, and we also know President Bush’s tax cuts are sunsetting.

JOHNSON: Income has dropped in 47 of the 50 states, and the two most affected states are New York and California, almost 4 percent each.

    KILMEADE: We have 57 states.

GRETCHEN CARLSON (co-host): I don’t think anyone’s surprised with that, and so a lot of people are saying — including somebody who was on our show yesterday who was the former director of the Congressional Budget Office, Douglas Holtz-Eakin. He was on our show yesterday to talk about how the health care numbers, in his mind, don’t seem to add up.

And he’s now quoted as saying that the government cannot spend its way to prosperity, talking about the fact that income continues to drop while spending in this country continues to go up. He says that those two things don’t mean prosperity. You can’t have incomes going down and spending going up, which seems like simple math, and yet so many people disagree on that.

Personal income excluding transfer payments has been declining since 2008 and has largely leveled off in the past year

NBER: “Personal income less transfers peaked in December 2007″ and has “generally declined since June” 2008. In December 2008, the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) announced that the recession began in December 2007. At that time, NBER stated, “Our measure of real personal income less transfers peaked in December 2007, displayed a zig-zag pattern from then until June 2008 at levels slightly below the December 2007 peak, and has generally declined since June.” NBER noted that “[t]o adjust personal income less transfer payments from nominal to real terms (that is, to remove the effects of price changes), the committee uses the deflator for gross domestic product.”

Personal income excluding transfer payments dropped during Bush’s last year in office. Fox & Friends and The Washington Times compared personal income excluding transfer payments under Obama to data for President Bush’s first year in office, while ignoring that the current recession began during Bush’s final year in office. BEA data show that personal income excluding current transfer payments fell from $9.614 trillion in January 2008 to $9.302 trillion in January 2009, a decrease of 3.2 percent. While Fox & Friends and The Washington Times did not provide this context, the following chart shows that the fall in personal income excluding transfer payments began around January 2008 — long before Obama took office — and has essentially leveled off since mid-2009:

    personal income excluding transfers chart

Personal income including transfer payments has increased 1.2 percent from January 2009 to February 2010

Wash. Times: “Real personal income for Americans — excluding government payouts such as Social Security — has fallen by 3.2 percent since President Obama took office.” An April 13 Drudge Report headline stated, “Personal income drops 3.2% since Obama.” Drudge linked to an April 13 Washington Times report with the headline, “Income falls 3.2% during Obama’s term.” Fox Nation also linked to The Washington Times article under the headline, “Incomes Fall 3.2% During Obama’s Term.” The Fox & Friends segment strongly echoed The Washington Times article, which reported that “[r]eal personal income for Americans — excluding government payouts such as Social Security — has fallen by 3.2 percent since President Obama took office in January 2009, according to the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Economic Analysis.” However, Fox & Friends did not note that the 3.2 percent decrease in personal income excludes government transfer payments including unemployment benefits and refundable tax credits from the stimulus package.

BEA measurement of “personal income” includes transfer payments from government. The Bureau of Economic Analysis defines “Personal income” as “[i]ncome received by persons from all sources. It includes income received from participation in production as well as from government and business transfer payments.”

Wash. Times: “Personal income with government ‘transfers’ … has grown during Mr. Obama’s time in office, up 1.2 percent from January 2009 to February 2010.” The Washington Times article noted: “Personal income with government ‘transfers’ — which include such federal money as Social Security, unemployment insurance, Medicare and food stamps — has grown during Mr. Obama’s time in office, up 1.2 percent from January 2009 to February 2010.”

BEA data states that personal income in February 2010 was $12.179 trillion, up from $12.038 trillion in January 2009. From BEA data complied by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis:

    personal income chart

Commerce Department credits government recovery efforts with supporting spending, income. On March 29, U.S. Commerce Under Secretary for Economic Affairs Rebecca Blank said of the most recent personal income and outlays data: “Today’s data indicate that, as the Administration’s economic recovery efforts have pulled us back from the brink and taken hold, American families have been able to save more and improve their financial positions.” Commerce Department chief economist Mark Doms stated on February 1 that “[r]eal disposable income also increased in the fourth quarter, partly reflecting growth in government benefits. Further stimulus expenditures will support the ongoing expansion in consumer spending and income.”

Fox & Friends has repeatedly downplayed impact of economic stimulus

On anniversary of bill’s passage, Fox & Friends repeatedly attacked and misinformed about stimulus. On the one-year anniversary of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Fox & Friends purported to analyze the results of the bill and repeatedly shed doubt on the impact of the stimulus on the employment situation. But Fox & Friends ignored independent analyses of the stimulus, including those conducted by Moody’s Economy.com and the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office that said the measure raised employment by 1 million to 2.4 million jobs by the end of 2009.

Fox & Friends promoted GOP attack over job losses since stimulus, ignoring estimates that it saved jobs. The hosts of Fox & Friends and Fox Business’ Dave Ramsey aired a graphic sourced to House Republicans that highlighted “Job Losses Since The ‘Stimulus’ ” to support the claim that the stimulus “didn’t work.” But economic analysts have estimated that employment has increased by as many as 2 million jobs relative to where the economy would be without the stimulus.

Bolling falsely claimed only 595,000 jobs have been created by the stimulus. On the February 16 edition of Fox and Friends, guest host Eric Bolling claimed of stimulus money: “$272 billion has been spent,” but only “595,000 jobs [have been] created,” adding, “that’s $450,000 per job.” In fact, the Recovery.gov employment numbers Bolling cited only represents jobs funded from October 1-December 31, 2009, which make up a small part of the total number of jobs that the White House and other economists estimate have been funded by the stimulus.

Fox & Friends recited misleading GOP press release on stimulus. Fox & Friends hosts parroted a House Republican press release and repeated its claim that the stimulus impact is “6 million jobs shy of what the administration promised us” since the administration stated “that 3.5 million jobs would be created. And, in fact, the United States has lost 2.7 million since the stimulus plan.” However, the administration estimated that by 2011 — not September 2009, when the 2.7 million job losses since February were recorded — 3.5 million jobs would be created or saved by the stimulus compared to the number of jobs that would have existed at the end of 2010 had the government not passed the legislation.

  • Michelle Obaba, Jill Biden in Haiti: Thanking UN. Transcript

    THE WHITE HOUSE

    Office of the First Lady

    ___________________________________________________________

For Immediate Release April 13, 2010

REMARKS BY THE FIRST LADY AND DR. BIDEN

    AT THANK YOU EVENT

    UN Logistical Center

    Port-au-Prince, Haiti

    3:22 P.M. (Local)

DR. BIDEN: Thank you Mr. Mulet for that introduction, for hosting us on this
important visit, and for the ongoing leadership that you and the United Nations
team have provided here in Haiti. And good afternoon and thank you to everyone
    gathered here today.

It’s truly an honor to be with all of you — individuals from across the world,
along with many Haitians, who have been at the core of the relief and the
    recovery efforts.

I am honored to be with you today and want to simply say thank you for your
heroic actions in recent months. Your commitment and compassion in the face of
unthinkable challenges has inspired the entire world.

Some of your very own here have lost lives, others have risked their lives, and
all of you have made us incredibly proud with your determined efforts to save
men, women and children — to provide comfort, and to put Haiti on a path to a
    brighter future.

All of you in this room know that the devastation in Haiti was unconceivable,
and that there is much work to be done. But after visiting for just a day, I
will leave with a renewed sense of hope and optimism because of the will of the
Haitian people and the steadfast commitment of those of you standing here today
and the international community you represent.

As a teacher, I was especially pleased to visit a school this morning that is
providing a sense of normalcy and hope for the children in this area. And I
spoke with Mrs. Préval about the importance of a strong education system to
provide young Haitians the chance at a better life.

I also saw rebuilding efforts that will result in more schools. And with the
leadership of the Haitian government, your help and that of the international
community, I know these schools will educate Haiti’s future leaders of
    government, arts, science and business.

Each of you is essential to these efforts. There is much hard work ahead. But
I know that together with the leadership of the Haitian people, the commitment
of the global community, and the ongoing sweat and compassion of those in this
room today, we will help Haiti build back better. (Applause.)

The First Lady and I came here to listen and learn, but also to deliver a
sincere and simple message: Thank you for what you have done and what you will
    do for this ongoing mission.

I am honored to join First Lady Michelle Obama for this meaningful visit to
    Haiti.

The President asked Michelle to come here to reiterate the commitment of the
United States to Haiti as a steadfast partner, and he could not have asked a
more able, dedicated, or compassionate person to deliver this message on behalf
    of the United States.

I am so proud — (applause) — I am so proud and honored to introduce my friend,
and a woman we are so fortunate to call our First Lady: Michelle Obama.
    (Applause.)

MRS. OBAMA: Well, thank you. Thank you, all. First let me start by thanking
my friend, Jill — Jill and her husband, that character you know, Vice President
Biden, for all that they’ve done over these past few months, especially in
support of our wonderful Haitian American communities, in South Florida and
across the United States. Let’s give Jill and Vice President Biden another
    round of applause. (Applause.)

And also to Ed Mulet, to David Harland, to Nigel Fisher, General Cruz, and all
the United Nations personnel who are here today, thank you. Thank you for
hosting us. This has been an incredibly warm welcome. It’s been an incredibly
informative visit. And I want to thank you all for your remarkable service
under truly extraordinary circumstances, by any measure.

The mission to help Haiti recover and rebuild is truly, as Dr. Biden said, an
international effort — an international effort that is here at the invitation
of the Haitian government and in support of — by the Haitian people.

And we’re joined today by representatives from many countries, international
institutions and NGOs who are playing a vital role in this rebuilding effort.
It is truly an honor to be here with all of you.

This has been a deeply moving day for Jill and I, a very emotional day in so
many ways. And Jill and I first and foremost were grateful for the opportunity
to be able to — sat down with President Préval and the First Lady. We again
expressed to them, as Jill said, America’s deepest condolences, first of all, to
the Haitian people for this terrible and tremendous loss.

My husband, the President, asked that we remind President Préval and the people
of Haiti that we are going to keep standing with them. That is for sure.
    (Applause.)

So I repeated to President Préval the pledge that my husband made to him at the
White House during his visit last month — that is, as Haiti recovers and
rebuilds, you will have a steady and reliable partner in the United States of
    America.

We had the opportunity also to visit some of the places that reflect the
enormous needs of the Haitian people, but also it reflects their amazing
    strength and resilience.

We visited families living in the tent cities in Champs De Mars — families
who’ve lost everything, everything, and for whom every day is a struggle to stay
    dry, to feed their children.

We visited a school — more so, a classroom in buses donated by the Dominican
Republic — where some truly amazing kids were rebuilding and playing and
dancing and laughing, even under the circumstances.

We also visited a school that is being rebuilt so that children can realize
their dreams of an education and a better life.

We just had a very moving visit at our U.S. embassy with Ambassador Merten, our
embassy staff — Americans as well as Haitians. They have worked so hard for
the past three months. And some of the civilian and military personnel who’ve
been part of the Americans’ contribution to this international effort, we got to
    spend some time with them.

And like so many of you, they lost colleagues and friends and loved ones. And
our purpose for these visits was to mainly say thank you — to thank them for
their extraordinary service and for delivering on America’s enduring commitment
    to Haiti.

But we wanted to come here today because, as I said, helping Haiti recover and
rebuild has been an international effort.

And those of you here — those of you here at the United Nations, our many
partner nations, these incredibly — incredible NGOs have really been at the
    heart of this huge undertaking.

And all of you have displayed such a spirit of compassion and partnership that,
frankly, we could use a whole lot more of in the world today. You all are
showing us all how it’s done.

You’ve done this even though so many of you have endured heartbreaking losses
    yourselves.

Here at the U.N, you lost Hédi Annabi and so many leaders and colleagues and
    members of the Stabilization Mission.

For the U.N., I understand it has been the single largest loss of life in
history. For each of you, it was the loss of a co-worker, a friend, a fellow
peacekeeper. For those of you in the NGO community, I know that the loss was
just as devastating — friends and partners and neighbors who you worked with
    every day.

And as we mark the three-month anniversary of this terrible day, I’d like to ask
us all to just take a moment of silence to honor all those that we’ve lost.

(There is a pause for a moment of silence.)

We honor every single one of these victims — people from dozens of nations.

And every day that each of you gets up and go back to work and into the
communities that you love, you should know that you’re not only carrying on
their work, you’re also honoring their lives and you’re keeping their legacy
alive. So please don’t ever forget that in these times of struggle.

And despite all your loss, you have shown amazing courage and commitment,
especially in those first hours and those first days.

One of the first Secretary Generals of the U.N. famously said that the U.N. —
and this is a quote — was “not created in order to bring us to heaven, but in
order to save us from hell.” And that’s just what you did for so many people
here. You saved them from devastation that was nothing like it on Earth.

You’ve worked around the clock, day after day, clearing rubble, and building
shelters, and delivering food, and water, and medicine and supplies to millions
of people. And you’ve done this all with a true spirit of partnership.

Yes, the United States is proud to play a leading role in this effort. But
let’s never forget that this has been one of the largest and most complex relief
operations the world has ever attempted — the world. And in one way or
another, more than 140 nations has helped to make this a reality.

General Peixoto and peacekeepers from dozens of nations restored security so the
    relief effort could proceed.

And when more peacekeepers were needed, nations around the world stepped up —
especially Brazil, even though it too lost so many in the quake.

And because you live and work in the communities that you serve, those of you in
the NGOs were often the first ones on the scene, providing food, and medical
care and shelter under nearly impossible conditions.

And I want to salute these inspiring organizations, especially all the Haitian
NGOs — Haitians serving Haitians. (Applause.)

And so much of your work would be impossible without the generous support of
Haitians living abroad, including in the United States. (Applause.)

To all these NGOs that you all represent, you represent them with the best
spirit of service. And I commend you for joining forces, and working together,
and pursuing a common vision of reconstruction. And as Haiti recovers and
rebuilds, you’re going to be indispensable, and America is going to be your
    partner, too.

So this has truly been a global effort — an amazing example of what nations and
what people can do when they come together to do what’s right.

The road ahead, as you know, is not going to be easy. And it’s not going to be
quick. As you know, the rainy season is coming soon; it is here. The hurricane
    season is coming, too.

But I heard a wonderful Haitian proverb that puts this all in perspective. And
some of you probably know it. It says, “Little by little, the bird builds its
    nest.”

And today, the needs of the Haitian people are still overwhelming. We know
that. I saw that firsthand. But every day — and thanks to Secretary General
Ban Ki-moon’s unprecedented Humanitarian Appeal — this international effort is
bringing more supplies and more shelter so that little by little, daily life
    will improve.

President Préval and the Haitian government have been working under unimaginable
difficulties. But they have a vision for the future and they have a roadmap to
get there. So little by little, Haiti will move forward.

The destruction is catastrophic. But last month, the world came together —
dozens of nations, including the United States; the U.N. and other international
institutions; and NGOs — and they made an historic commitment to Haiti’s
long-term reconstruction. So little by little, Haiti will rebuild.

Now, some might ask, after so much misery, how can we still have faith? After
so much ruin, how can Haiti rise again? After so much loss, how on Earth can
    you still have hope?

Well, we have hope because we’ve been inspired — inspired by the resilience and
the faith of the Haitian people — (applause) — people who have lost
everything, except their belief that tomorrow can be a little bit better than
    today.

And we have hope because the people of Haiti are not alone. America is standing
with Haiti. (Applause.) The world is standing with Haiti. You are all
standing with Haiti. And your commitment and dedication to this country is
    truly inspiring.

It’s the commitment reflected in an e-mail that I received from one of your
embassy staff before I came for this visit, Sonia Kim, who I just got to meet.
And I think that her beautiful words speak to the commitment that all of you
bring to this work, wherever you’re from, whatever language you speak.

She wrote: “We are exhausted, traumatized and heart-broken. But we choose to
stay here and work. We choose to stay because we love Haiti and its people. We
choose to stay because we believe in our duty to help the people here in their
greatest hour of need. We choose to stay because we believe in our mission. We
choose to stay because we still hold out hope…for recovery and renewal…and for a
Haiti built back better than ever before.”

And that’s why I came here today. (Applause.) That’s why we have hope. And
that’s why, little by little, we’re going to keep making tomorrow better than
    today.

Thank you for your incredible service. We are so proud of you. The world is
proud of you. The world is watching. And we wish you nothing but the best.
God bless. Thank you so much. (Applause.)

  • Alfa Romeo Giulietta official pics and details

    Alfa Romeo Giulietta

Here are the official pics of the new Alfa Giulietta, which debuted yesterday with sales to start around Europe in May. The Giulietta is based on Alfa’s new Compact platform which focuses on driving dynamics: road grip, agility and safety, thanks to a new chassis which makes use of materials such as aluminium and steel.

The Alfa DNA system which first appeared on the Alfa MiTo, is also featured on the Giulietta, with three set-up programs of Dynamic, Normal and All Weather. The dimensions of the Giulietta are slightly larger than the 147 it replaces, measuring 435 x 146 x 180. It has a wheelbase of 263 cm and a boot capacity of 350 litres. Among the new interior features we see a pop-up display for navigation or engine updates, although the big deal for the new Alfa is the engine line-up.

The Alfa Giulietta comes with four engine options at launch date, all of which are Euro 5 compliant and fitted with start&stop technology. The petrol models are: 1.4-litre TB with 120 hp and the 1.4 TB Multiair with 170 hp. The diesel models on offer are a 1.6 JTDM with 105 hp and a 2.0 JTDM with 170 hp, both of which are second generation Multijet models. To be added later is the Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde equipped with the 1750 TBi with 235 hp and 340 Nm. It has direct injection and a ’scavenging’ system which eliminates the turbo lag.

All of the engines come with a new six-speed manual gearbox designed for high rev performance, and in the future the Multiair and 2.0-litre JTDM engines will be offered with dual-clutch transmission. The Giulietta comes in two fit-outs – Progression and Distinctive, with two personalisation kits of Pack Sport and Pack Premium. Safety features included are a hill holder, six airbags, reinforced rear seatbelts and anti-whiplash front seats.

Other aspects are manual air conditioning, electric windows, trip computer, CD MP3 reader, six speakers etc. In addition, the Distinctive package has 16-inch alloy wheels, twin-zone air conditioning, leather steering wheel with radio controls, front arm rest with storage compartment, cruise control, fog lights and ‘Competizione’ sports upholstery. The Pack Sport is as its name suggests, and includes special suspension, 17 or 18-inch wheels, side skirts, sports pedals and sports seats available in leather or microfibre. Other touches are a brushed aluminium trim and dark interior finish.

The Premium Pack has bi-xeno lights, Blue&Me bluetooth technology, USB port, MP3 radio, steering wheel controls, rear parking sensors, rain and light windshield sensors and electronic rear vision mirrors. When the Giulietta Quadrifoglio or Cloverleaf version comes out it will have lowered suspension by 15mm at the front and 10 mm at the rear, 17 or 18-inch dedicate alloy wheels, and a larger braking system with Rosso Alfa red calipers.

While we’re dreaming of an Alfa Giulietta Quadrifoglio, overall this looks like a solid (and sexy) offering from Alfa which could prove to be an excellent car for dedicated driving fun in a daily context. It’s one of the best offerings from Alfa in a long time and so far the Giulietta future is looking bright.

  • Federal judge orders Mississippi schools to desegregate

[JURIST] A judge in the US District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi on Tuesday ordered a southern Mississippi school district to end its practice of allowing students to transfer from their assigned schools and classroom groupings, resulting in a segregated school system. The US Department of Justice (DOJ) initially brought a lawsuit to enforce a 1970 order against the Walthall County School District that prohibited the district from racially segregating its schools. According to court filings, schools in the district had allowed about 300 students each year, a majority of them white, to transfer to a single school outside of their assigned area, leaving other schools in the district with a disproportionate number of black students. Additionally, some schools had assembled classrooms along racial lines. Judge Tom Lee’s order requires the school district to change its transfer policy to allow a transfer only where the student has provided a compelling justification for the transfer and to revise its classroom assignment protocols. Lee’s order stipulated that the school district must use a software program that randomly allocates students to classrooms to avoid segregation. School officials did not file any opposition in the case and have agreed to follow the judge’s order.
Previously, the Walthall County School District had allowed white students to transfer from schools located in Tylertown and attend the Salem Attendance Center about 10 miles away. The Tylertown schools host around 1,700 students with a makeup of about 75 percent African American students. More than 550 students go to the Salem Attendance Center, and approximately 66 percent of those students are white. The US Supreme Court originally struck down school segregation in the 1954 case of Brown v. Board of Education.

  • Macbook vertical laptop stand

Another one from Shelemka. Good for stowing away your Macbook when not in use.

“I made this vertical laptop stand for my 13” Macbook Pro using 7″ x 10″ Anordna glass shelves that I bought when Ikea was clearing them out (I believe they’ve since been renamed to Lillangen), some 1 1/2 inch screws with blunt ends (machine screws?) and 10 -1/4″ x 1/4″ rubber washers that fit tightly (serving as nuts to hold the glass in place). Although the glass does sit flat on the desk, I did add a stand I had from an old external hard drive for extra stability.”

  • Whitney Houston Booed As UK Tour Earns Mixed Reviews From Brits

Houston, we have a problem: Whitney Houston’s first concert in Britain in more than a decade has received mixed reviews with some fans describing it as “horrendous,” The BBC reports.

The 46-year-old singer kicked off the European leg of her tour in Birmingham, playing to a sold-out crowd after battling an upper respiratory infection for the past two weeks. Houston was forced to postpone a concert in Paris and her first three gigs in the UK while she recovered, but a number of fans were left confused and $200 poorer after Houston croaked her way through her signature ballads, often failing to hit the right notes during last night’s show.

According to Yahoo.com’s “Snap, Crackle, Pop” Column, the diva was booed by fans on a number of occasions during a set that has been described as “shambolic.” And don’t get us started on her shaky rendition of “I Will Always Love You.” Many fans turned to the Internet to voice their displeasure with Houston’s show:

On Twitter, SymphonyUK said: “It’s a shame Whitney didn’t lip-synch, like Britney did.”

One fan told London’s Daily Mail: “I was waiting for the Trading Standards guys to call a halt and offer us our money back. It was a con, a rip off. It wasn’t a concert.”

The audience got restless as the singer took a number of long breaks in between belting out her hits.

One fan told a local radio station: “She was rasping and rambling. She couldn’t sing, it was horrendous and I shall be asking for my money back.”

Some European critics were also unimpressed by her performance with many claiming that her once amazing voice no longer sounds as good as it used to. Take The Sun, for instance:

“Time and crack addiction – which she claims to have beaten – have not been kind to her once astonishing voice. It is now deeper and huskier. Houston, we still have a problem.”

Yet despite complaints from disgruntled fans, some reviewers have been kinder.

“A long way away from the fresh, glowing talent seen at her peak, the voice was still there although “the stamina was not,” The Birmingham Post said.

David Sinclair from The Times remaked that Whit’s “armor-plated vibrato was still in evidence” but noted that “she is now, understandably, finding it hard to match up to her own standards let alone those of the next generation.”

The Austrailian leg of Whitney’s “Nothing But Love World Tour” also came under attack, with fans there claiming she struggled to sing properly and looked exhausted and breathless when she performed Down Under in February.

  • Jeff Rubin: Who Needs The EPA When You Have Peak Oil?

mad maxHere’s why the EPA’s new minimum of 35.5 miles to the gallon by 2016 means nothing, according to oil prophet Jeff Rubin.

First, Americans always find a way to increase consumption to keep up with increased efficiency, Rubin says:

Your engine may be a lot more efficient that your dad’s old gas-guzzler from the 1970s, but chances are you burn just as much gasoline on the road over the course of a year as he did. You, like your fellow North American drivers, eat up all the energy efficiency gains made in engine and materials technology over the last thirty years by driving ever-larger, ever-faster vehicles loaded with more and more energy-consuming features. And to top it all off, you drive your vehicle about a third more than your parents did, in large measure because you commute so much further every day than they did.

Second and more importantly, Rubin points to his standard game changer: Peak oil.

Triple-digit oil prices — coming soon — will change consumer habits and force the auto industry to make a lot more motorcycles.

Oklahoma Republicans Conspire With Tea Parties To Form Anti-Federal Government Militia

State Sen. Randy Brogdon (R-OK)The Associated Press reports that Oklahoma tea party leaders, “frustrated by recent political setbacks,” are working with right-wing Republicans in the Oklahoma legislature to create a new “volunteer militia to help defend against what they believe are improper federal infringements on state sovereignty.” State Sen. Randy Brogdon (R-OK) and State Rep. Charles Key (R-OK) have met with tea party leaders, like J.W. Berry of the Tulsa-based OKforTea group, to plan legislation for a state-authorized militia. Brogdon, who is running for Governor and sponsored the right-wing anti-health reform “state sovereignty” resolution in his state, explained that he believes his anti-federal government militia has constitutional backing:

The founding fathers “were not referring to a turkey shoot or a quail hunt. They really weren’t even talking about us having the ability to protect ourselves against each other,” Brogdon said. “The Second Amendment deals directly with the right of an individual to keep and bear arms to protect themselves from an overreaching federal government.”

But critics say the tea party militia idea could “throw fuel in the fire of radicals.” Even some Republicans are opposed to Brogdon’s initiative. “If the intent is to create a militia for disaster relief, we have the National Guard,” said Sen. Steve Russell, (R-OK), a retired Army lieutenant colonel. “Anything beyond that purpose should be viewed with great concern and caution.” Indeed, the news of the state-sponsored militia movement arrives shortly before the 15th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing, on April 19.

Berry, the tea party leader who first solicited support for the militia, has posted rants against President Obama: the “Muslim President” — a “reincarnation of Pol Pot” who is trying imprison Americans for resisting health reform. One ominous posting from Berry says that his militia should “launch a thousand guerrilla attacks on the plans that these people have to ruin us and our country.”

Both Berry and Brogdon lean heavily on far right propaganda and media outlets to fuel their conspiracy theories. Berry frequently cites conservative news outlets like CNS and notes that he draws inspiration from the white supremacist thriller The Turner Diaries. Despite his extremism, Berry has met with Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) and other members of the Oklahoma Republican delegation, and counts them as “rock solid.” Brogdon, whose states’ rights resolution was drafted by corporate lobbyists opposed to health reform, has been endorsed by the lobbyist-run Tea Party Express and has appeared on on Fox News, Alex Jones’ radio show, and at a Glenn Beck rally.

McConnell Slams Financial Reform Bill After Meeting With Hedge Fund Managers And Other Wall Street Elites
This morning, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) declared his opposition to the financial reform bill before the Senate. mcc1This morning, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) declared his opposition to the financial reform bill before the Senate. McConnell claimed to have principled objections to the bill, saying that it “institutionalizes” bailouts of Wall Street and that it would give the Federal Reserve “enhanced emergency lending authority that is far too open to abuse.”

What McConnell did not mention was that, last week, he traveled alongside National Republican Senatorial Committee chairman Sen. John Cornyn (TX) to New York City for a private meeting with elite hedge fund managers and other Wall Street executives. The purpose of the meeting between the top Republicans and the financial executives was to enlist “Wall Street’s help” in funding Republican campaigns in the fall and killing any tough financial reform:

As a financial reform bill starts to take shape in Washington, two key lawmakers came to New York City last week to explain what it means for Wall Street, and how financial executives might help prevent some of its least market-friendly aspects from becoming law by electing more Republicans, FOX Business Network has learned.

About 25 Wall Street executives, many of them hedge fund managers, sat down for a private meeting Thursday afternoon with two of the most powerful Republican lawmakers in Congress: Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, and John Cornyn, the senior senator from Texas who runs the National Republican Senatorial Committee, one of the primary fundraising arms of the Republican Party. […]

In order to assure [Republican electoral] gains, and add even more, McConnell and Cornyn made it clear they need Wall Street’s help.

Separately, House Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence (R-IN) met with hedge fund managers this morning and told them that “Democrats’ solution for financial reform consists of two words: government control.” He added, “America will continue to be the home of freedom and the free market; the place where liberty prevails.”

As the Wonk Room’s Pat Garofalo writes, Republicans are making “a habit” out of meeting with lobbyists to kill important reforms. In June 2009, Senate Republicans worked closely with health care lobbyists to kill the public option. In the same month they also organized a “hearing” with energy industry representatives designed around defeating cap-and-trade. In December, the House Republican leadership huddled with more than 100 financial lobbyists to debate the strategy for killing financial reform. And in February of this year, House Minority Leader Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) met with JP Morgan chief Jamie Dimon to try to convince him to funnel funds to the Republican Party after the Democrats started getting tougher on Wall Street. Boehner last month told financial lobbyists to not let “punk staffers” take advantage of them, and Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL) asked bankers to donate $10,000 to Rep. Roy Blunt’s (R-MO) Senate campaign.

It should be noted that some Democrats have continued to court corporate interests as well. Earlier this year, twelve Democratic senators spent a weekend fundraising at a private retreat in Miami Beach with lobbyists from the American Bankers Association, drug companies, and defense contractors. • Wal-Mart might have stores built from recycled materials

    Wal-Mart.jpg
We’ve heard of Wal-Mart’s efforts to go green with solar panels before at Apple Valley. The retail giants have done it again, this time with recyclable stores! Now we aren’t talking about PET made stores or Wal-Marts mad from cardboard. Lee Scott, chairman of Wal-Mart’s executive committee stated at the Fortune’s Brainstorm Green conference, that the retailer was looking to have its buildings built from materials that can easily revert to earth once demolished. A spokesperson also stated that Wal-Mart, known for trampling over local businesses, is planning to use more recyclable materials for future builds.

Currently, the buildings use rubber in store baseboards that is made partly from old diapers, steel containing recycled components and concrete composed of 20% fly ash (a byproduct of burning coal). If these statements aren’t just rumors or dreamy imaginations of Lee Scott, Wal-Mart’s pros will soon outdo its cons.
