  • Maternal Mortality: Global Death Rate Drops, or Does It?

PregnantYou wouldn’t think that getting world-wide figures on the number of mothers who die in pregnancy, childbirth or afterward would be particularly tricky for the experts. But there’s more evidence that such is the case.

New data on the subject comes in a study published in the Lancet saying that the number of maternal deaths had fallen to 342,900 in 2008 from 526,300 in 1980, a 35% decline. The trend “for the first time in a generation, is one of persistent and welcome progress,” a Lancet editorial says.

But the editorial also notes that there are “wide uncertainty intervals around these numbers” in the study, which was led by researchers at the University of Washington and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Indeed, the new numbers contradict data from the World Health Organization, which reported last May that mothers and newborns are no more likely to survive now than 20 years ago, notes Reuters.

The Lancet said the authors used new analytical methods on the latest data to come up with their findings for 181 countries.

The new data found that while there was progress on maternal deaths, much remained to be done. More than half of all maternal deaths occurred in only six countries in 2008 — India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. HIV remains a huge problem; without the disease, the number of maternal deaths world-wide would have been 281,500 in 2008, the study said.

And the Lancet study also found the rate of maternal deaths in the U.S. rose to 17 per 100,000 live births in 2008 from 12 per 100,000 in 1980. Researchers said they found no complete reason for the increase nor why U.S. maternal deaths are double the rate in Britain, triple that in Australia and four times the rate in Italy.

  • New Foreclosure Record Set as House Holds Mortgage Modification Hearings

Tomorrow, the House Financial Services Committee, headed by Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), starts a series of hearings on mortgage modification and the housing market. The schedule is as follows:

Some troubling data on the inadequacies of HAMP and the still-weak housing market form a backdrop to the hearings. Today, Bank of America reports that it has completed 33,000 mortgage-modifications, up 12,000 since March — it says it has now modified around a quarter of eligible mortgages. (Citigroup does better: It has modified more than half.)

But those positive statistics are overshadowed by a report from Lender Processing Services — a major mortgage processing company — showing that the inventory of foreclosed homes hit a “record high” in February. The number of delinquencies jumped 21 percent year-on-year. The report notes: “More than 1.1 million loans that were current at the beginning of January 2010 were already at least 30 days delinquent or in foreclosure by February 2010 month-end.” This graph shows the percentage of mortgages that are non-current or in foreclosure, month by month:

  • Police await toxicology results in Cancun homicide

Mexican prosecutors said they are awaiting the results of toxicology results before deciding whether to arrest a Hollywood producer whose wife was killed last week at a Cancun resort.

Monica Beresford-Redman, a Westside nightclub owner, died of strangulation but also suffered several blows to the head, authorities She died some time on April 5, and her husband reported her missing the next day. Her body was found Thursday, dumped in a sewer. Authorities reportedly don’t believe she was killed there.

On Friday, Bruce Beresford-Redman, 38, who produced CBS’ "Survivor" and MTV’s "Pimp My Ride," was released by state police in Mexico after being questioned. He is barred from leaving Mexico until the investigation is completed.

He has denied any role in the slaying of his wife.

Prosecutors said the timeline the producer provided about his wife’s disappearance appeared to clash with those of some witnesses. They described the producer as a "person of interest" in the case but said no decision about an arrest will be made until forensic tests are completed.

The couple had gone to Mexico for a romantic getaway that family members said was designed to revive a strained marriage. Guests at the Moon Palace Hotel in Cancun reported hearing a loud fight coming from the room the couple shared with their children.

His father, David Beresford-Redman, said in a statement that his son "loved [his wife] and would never have harmed her. He has our full support as we try to do what’s best for him and our grandchildren so they can be reunited soon."

The statement continued: "We urge Mexican law enforcement authorities to identify those responsible for this horrendous crime."

Monica Beresford-Redman, a native of Brazil, owned the Zabumba Restaurant on Venice Boulevard near Overland Avenue.

  • Sprint Overdrive — Quick Look

I have been a mobile broadband user for years; I started back in the 1xRTT days as a matter of fact. I’ve watched connections speeds go up over the years, and until recently I was quite happy with the EVDO speeds I enjoy using my Verizon MiFi. Sprint has been madly rolling out WiMAX (4G) all over the U.S., and the recent news that Houston was lit up had me jonesing for a switch to the higher speed. I waffled over the decision to jump from Verizon’s 3G to Sprint’s 4G for a while, so the folks at Sprint decided they would send me a 4G Overdrive modem to test. I’ve only had it for a few hours, and haven’t found any 4G connectivity yet, but here’s a quick look at the Overdrive modem.

The Overdrive is like the MiFi as it is a 3G modem that serves as a Wi-Fi router to allow up to 5 devices to connect to the Sprint network simultaneously. Once the device has been set up to use the Overdrive’s Wi-Fi network, subsequent connections are as easy as hitting the power button on the modem. That’s what makes wireless routers like the Overdrive so compelling, they are easy and will work with any device with Wi-Fi. Oh, and if the Sprint 4G network is active in the area, it connects at those speeds (up to 10 times faster than EVDO). That’s pretty darn compelling, too.

The Overdrive is bigger and thicker than the MiFi, no doubt to fit those extra 4G bits inside. It has a nice LED display on the front that provides full status information, like connection info and battery gauge, which is sadly lacking on the Verizon MiFi. There is also a microSD card on the Overdrive to allow storing media files for streaming over the Overdrive’s Wi-Fi network.

Sadly, the 4G network is not live on my street yet, so I haven’t been able to enjoy that fast speed. The Overdrive tries to find and connect to the 4G network when powered on (which takes a minute), and failing that connects to the Sprint 3G network, which is happening at my home office. When I first checked the Sprint 4G coverage map a couple of weeks ago it showed the area where I live was fully covered with 4G. When I check it today it shows that there is 4G coverage most everywhere around me except on a few blocks surrounding my house. No 4G for me.

My limited testing has only been at home on the 3G network. The speed I am getting on the Sprint 3G (EVDO) network is slower than the Verizon 3G (EVDO) I get on the MiFi, which is disappointing. I wouldn’t mind trading the MiFi for the Overdrive if I didn’t give up any speed at home, but that’s not the case. Of course when 4G gets turned on here — and there’s no indication when that might be — there’s no looking back.

So far I haven’t seen any power problems as some have reported. The Overdrive has been solid in that regard, although it has intermittently dropped the 3G network connection a few times. That has been really annoying as it kills whatever I’m doing at the time. I have to manually tell the device to reconnect to the Overdrive and then I am back online.

I’ll be testing the Overdrive more thoroughly over the next few days, so I’ll find some 4G and report on the speed I get. I’ll also have a look at the Overdrive’s configuration, as every aspect of both the data connection and the Wi-Fi settings can be customized. This may have something to do with the connection drops I’ve seen so far.

  • Faulty cleanup process could be key to Huntington’s

Scientists at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University have shown that the accumulation of a mutated protein may explain damaging cellular behavior in Huntington’s disease, a condition resulting from a gene mutation that leads to a defective form of the huntingtin protein.

“Studies have shown that Huntington’s disease occurs in part because the mutated huntingtin protein accumulates within cells,” says senior author Ana Maria Cuervo. “In our investigation of how the accumulating huntingtin protein affects the functioning of cells, we found that it interferes with the cells’ ability to digest and recycle their contents.”

Cells rely on different mechanisms to break down old proteins and other components and recycle them through processes known collectively as authophagy. These processes keep cells clean and provide them with replacement parts. Cuervo’s team had previously shown that a glitch in autophagy may trigger Parkinson’s disease, and she suspected that something similar was going on in Huntington’s patients. After studying two mouse models, as well as lymphoblasts from people with the disease, she and her team found that the mutated huntingtin protein was sabotaging the cell’s cleaning efforts.

One mechanism for cleaning up cells involves forming a membrane around the protein or other cellular structure requiring removal. These autophagosomes then travel to enzyme-filled sacs known as lysosomes that fuse with the bags and digest their cargo.  Cuervo and her team found that the defective huntingtin proteins stick to the inner layer of autophagosomes, preventing them from gathering garbage. The result: Autophagosomes arrive empty at the lysosomes; and cellular components that should be recycled instead accumulate, causing toxicity that probably contributes to cell death.

This finding shows that activating the lysosomes of cells–one of the proposed treatments for Huntington’s disease–won’t do any good, Cuervo says. Her team’s paper appears in the April 11 online issue of Nature Neuroscience.

  • LG Handset Showing in Verizon inventory, is it the Aloha?

Phonearena.com is reporting that they have gotten an anonymous tipster sent along the image to the left.  Look closely and you will see LG VS740 with Google as being listed in their system.  Of course there is very little other information on what handset it is exactly, but this image may be pointing to the fact that the LG Aloha is coming to Verizon Wireless. This model number popped up in the FCC testing records about a month ago.

Now there are some other rumors what this model number in the Verizon system might be, saying the VS740 will actually be Verizon’s version of the LG LU2300 Android phone with 1GHz Snapdragon chipset, 5MP camera and 720p video playback.  Either way, an interesting development to chew on today.  The projected specs are below in a quote, taken from this article from TFTN:

Specs are thought to include a 3.5 inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen display, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 5 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, GPS, an optical trackpad and a full QWERTY keyboard. Additional perks are said to include support for HSDPA and DivX as well as 720p playback.

Stay tuned for updates on this development.

  • Michelle “Bombshell” McGee Apologizes To Sandra Bullock: “I’m Surprised More People Aren’t Taking My Side!”

How do you apologize for helping to wreck someone’s marriage?

“Gee Lady, I’m really sure I boinked your husband on your sofa.”

Somehow we don’t think that would go over very well. Nonetheless, Michelle “Bombshell” McGee says she owes Sandra Bullock “a heartfelt apology” after carrying on an 11-month affair with her husband, biker Jesse James.

That might be a bit more believable if Michelle weren’t also accused of banging Pink’s husband back in 2008.

The first woman named in the Jesse James alleged infidelity scandal has offered an apology to the West Coast Choppers executive’s wife in an exclusive interview with an Australian tabloid TV show.

“I’d like to say, ‘Sandra, you know, I’m sorry. I’m sorry for your embarrassment, I’m sorry all this is public,” the tattooed stripper told Australia’s Today Tonight. “I feel bad for Sandra, you know, I know what she’s going through. She must be hurt, devastated, upset, embarrassed,” Michelle told the show.

Although she claims to feel “sympathy” for Sandra, Michelle argues that she too was lied to by Jesse and admits that the public’s reaction to the cheating scandal has not been as understanding as she would have hoped.

“I’ve been getting very harsh reactions, name-calling – ‘I’m a homewrecker, a slut, a whore,’ and I’m very surprised by that, that more people aren’t taking my side. I don’t want any pity… but Jesse is the bad guy here…. I got duped as much as Sandra did,” she said.

Excuse us, but you slept with another women’s husband. Dude! What does she expect, a medal of valor? Even if Sandra and Jesse were separated, as Bombshell insists she was told, they’re still legally married — and that makes Jesse off-limits. Geez, where’s The Real Housewives of New Jersey’s Teresa with her infamous “Prostitution Whore!” chant when you need her?

Anywho, Michelle is also disturbed that world thinks she’s a racist. Sorry — the Nazi hat and swastika must have thrown us off!

“I’m gonna try to redeem my reputation. My reputation’s been tarnished, especially with the Nazi and the white supremacist stuff,” she said. “It’s very, very hurtful to hear those things over a silly photoshoot… In hindsight, I shouldn’t have done the photoshoot, but that hurts me that that is what people are seeing now is that photoshoot.”

  • Hazelnut Chocolate Chip Cookies

    Hazelnut Chocolate Chip Cookies

I have to admit that pecans are probably my favorite nut to put into a cookie, judging by the fact that I use them more than any other nut, but I can go for anything from walnuts to macadamias to pistachios. This time around, I decided to use hazelnuts to add some crunch to a batch of chocolate chip cookies. Hazelnuts and chocolate make a great combination – as evidenced by the popularity of Nutella – and hazelnuts tend to be a little bit crunchier than some other nuts because they’re a little less buttery and tender on their own.

I used lightly toasted, whole hazelnuts for this recipe, so they had a nice nutty flavor going into the cookies. Some recipes that use hazelnuts call for their skins to be removed first, but that is not necessary for these casual cookies because flecks of brown hazelnut skin won’t stand out (or look bad, even if they do) against the golden brown cookies. To further emphasize the hazelnut flavor in these, I also incorporated a little bit of Nutella into the cookie dough.

The cookies have a crisp edge and a slightly chewy center to them. When they are fresh from the oven, you can really get a great Nutella flavor from both the small amount of Nutella in the dough and the warm chocolate surrounding the hazelnuts. They retain their chewiness after they’ve cooled and store, in an airtight container, well for a couple of days.

  • Another Kin Two and Kin Studio hands-on video

Phonescoop.com have published this hands-on video of the 8 megapixel Kin Two in action.  Mary Jo Foley reports that the device is devoid of an app store, with none planned either and applications will only be added with each update sent OTA by Microsoft.

Apparently Microsoft developed the experience after interviewing 50 000 people, even before purchasing Danger, and the device contains absolutely no Danger code at all.

InformationWeek noted the device is missing basic features such as a calendar, and despite being the Sidekick successor lacks IM also, which I believe is actually the biggest omission for a socially-aware device.

Roz Ho also revealed to ZDNet that “Over time, expect to see a lot of alignment” among Windows Phone 7 and Kin, but declined to say if Kin features will show up in Windows Phone 7 or vice versa. She also hinted that other OEM’s other than Sharp may make Kin phones, and the devices will not be Microsoft branded. “This (Kin) is another Windows Phone,” Ho said.

Forbes reveals the real difference between this device and Windows Phone 7: According to Robbie Bach "Windows Phone 7 is about simplifying peoples’ lives, this social phone is about amplifying their lives,".

If our readers can parse that enigmatic statement, explain it to the rest of us below.

2011 Jaguar XJ – Click above for high-res image gallery

The 2011 Jaguar XJ is certainly a drastic departure from Ye Olde Saloon that went out of production last summer. The new car adds some much needed sex appeal to the flagship Jag, and as we found out in our first drive, it’s a pretty good steer, as well. Jaguar is hoping that consumers will appreciate the reworked sedan, too – the automaker is hoping to boost overall sales by 50 percent when the 2011 XJ hits dealerships around the world next month.

According to Automotive News, Jaguar sales dropped 21 percent last year – only 51,885 units being moved worldwide (11,955 of which were in the United States). The automaker is counting on the XJ to increase overall sales numbers to around 75,000 units, with one Jaguar spokesperson saying that the XJ will reignite interest in the brand, though the less expensive XK and XF ranges will still continue to be the lead sellers.

The 2011 XJ is certainly priced and equipped to compete with the BMW 7 Series, Audi A8 and Mercedes-Benz S Class, but can it seriously boost Jaguar’s sales numbers? We certainly hope so, and be sure to give us your opinion in the comments below.

  • Hardware remote focus knob for DSLRs – that attaches to your iPhone

There’s a lot going on here, but what you’re basically looking at is a focus ring, attached to an iPhone, which sends a signal to a remote unit, which then turns the real focus ring on a DSLR that would otherwise be inaccessible. There are other tools a bit like this, but the integration of an iPhone as interface element could streamline things immensely.

Looks like you can also control aperture, zoom, and whatever else is compatible with RedRock Micro’s microRemote system, likely depending mostly on your camera make and model.

Be careful with the options, and Buick’s elegant urban hauler can satisfy.

    What Is It?

Representing the high end of General Motors’ Lambda crossover range—which also includes the Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia—the Enclave was the first modern Buick to exhibit high levels of interior refinement, design, and serenity. Offering three-row seating, GM claims that the Enclave’s unibody architecture makes it lighter and more efficient than full-size body-on-frame SUVs, even while it occupies roughly the same footprint as, say, a Cadillac Escalade. While its lighter construction and the lack of V-8 power means the Enclave can’t tow nearly as much as that same Escalade (4500 pounds max versus 8000-plus for the Cadillac), smaller rolling stock and less-burly underpinnings provide the suppler ride favored by most Buick customers.

  • Mary Meeker: Mobile Internet Will Soon Overtake Fixed Internet

Mary Meeker of Morgan Stanley isn’t just any Internet analyst. She was covering the sector when the brokerage firm was the lead underwriter for Netscape Communications’ initial public offering in 1995, was dubbed the “Queen of the Net” by Barron’s magazine in 1998 and was covering the space in 2004, when Morgan Stanley helped launch the Google IPO. Now a managing director at Morgan Stanley and head of the global technology research team, she has released her latest massively detailed “State of the Internet” report, which she has been putting out periodically since 1995. She presented the report during an event this afternoon at Google, which was streamed live as part of the Events@Google series.

And what does Meeker see in her crystal ball this year? Two overwhelming trends that will affect consumers, the hardware/infrastructure industry and the commercial potential of the web: mobile and social networking. Such a conclusion is hardly earth-shattering news to GigaOM readers, for we have been following these trends over the past year or two, but Meeker puts some pretty large numbers next to those trends, and looks at the shifts that will (or are likely to) take place in related industries such as communications hardware. She also compares where the rest of the developed world is in terms of mobile communications and social networking with Japan. Again, not a radically different approach to the one many tech forecasters take, but Meeker has the weight of some considerable research chops on her side.

The Morgan Stanley analyst says that the world is currently in the midst of the fifth major technology cycle of the past half a century. The previous four were the mainframe era of the 1950s and 60s, the mini-computer era of the 1970s and the desktop Internet era of the 80s. The current cycle is the era of the mobile Internet, she says — predicting that within the next five years “more users will connect to the Internet over mobile devices than desktop PCs.” As she puts it on one of the slides in the report: “Rapid Ramp of Mobile Internet Usage Will be a Boon to Consumers and Some Companies Will Likely Win Big (Potentially Very Big) While Many Will Wonder What Just Happened.”

Meeker says that mobile Internet usage is ramping up substantially faster than desktop Internet usage did, a view she and her team arrived at by comparing the adoption rates of iPhone/iPod touch to that of AOL and Netscape in the early 1990s. According to Meeker, adoption of the Apple devices is taking place more than 11 times faster that of AOL, and several times as fast as that of Netscape. Helping to drive this is 3G technology, which Morgan Stanley says recently hit an “inflection point” by being available to more than 20 percent of the world’s cellular users (although penetration is only 7 percent in Central/South America and 13 percent in Asia/Pacific — excluding Japan, where it’s 96 percent).

But that mobile boom will take its toll on carriers, Meeker says, because mobile Internet use is all about data. The average cell-phone usage pattern is 70 percent voice, while the average iPhone is 45 percent voice. At NTT DoCoMo, data usage accounts for 90 percent of network traffic. The analyst says her team expects mobile data traffic to increase by almost 4,000 percent by 2014, for a cumulative annual growth rate of more than 100 percent. Such numbers will likely strike fear into the hearts of carriers, but joy into the hearts of equipment suppliers and mobile service companies.

One of the implications of mobile access is a growth in ecommerce, says Meeker, featuring things such as location-based services, time-based offers, mobile coupons, push notifications, etc. In China, the success of social network Tencent proves that virtual goods can be a big business, she says — virtual goods sales accounted for $2.2 billion worth of the company’s revenue in 2009 and $24 in annual revenue per user. Online commerce and paid services made up 32 percent of mobile revenue in Japan in 2008, up from just 14 percent in 2000. Meeker’s report suggests that the rest of the world — which is still below the 14 percent-mark — could see much the same trajectory over the next 10 years.

Meeker says that users are more willing to pay for content on mobile devices than they are on desktops for a number of reasons, including:

    * Easy-to-Use/Secure Payment Systems — embedded systems like carrier billing and iTunes allow real-time payment

    * Small Price Tags -– most content and subscriptions carry sub-$5 price tags

    * Walled Gardens Reduce Piracy -– content exists in proprietary environments, difficult to get pirated content onto mobile devices

    * Established Store Fronts -– carrier decks and iTunes store allow easy discovery and purchase

    * Personalization -– more important on mobiles than desktops

On the social networking side, Meeker’s report notes that social network use is bigger than email in terms of both aggregate numbers of users and time spent, and is still growing rapidly. Social networking passed email in terms of time spent in 2007, hitting about 100 billion minutes/month globally — it’s now twice that — and passed email in terms of raw user numbers in July of 2009, with more than 800 million. Given the rate at which Facebook has been growing, that number is probably now closer to a billion. Meeker attributes social networking’s success to the fact that it’s a “unified communications + multimedia creation tool/repository in your pocket.” And Japan’s experience makes how crucial mobile is to that equation: Mixi, one of the country’s largest social networks, has seen its mobile page views grow to 72 percent of the total from just 17 percent three years ago.

  • U.N. Climate Negotiators Facing Crucial Test

United Nations climate change negotiators proposed Sunday to consider holding more sessions aimed at bridging differences left unresolved by last December's contentious talks in Copenhagen.

While some developing nations signaled support this week for the accord reached in Copenhagen, others questioned the role of the accord in future talks.

EDF’s International Counsel Annie Petsonk, who monitored the talks in Bonn this weekend, said:

The U.N. climate negotiations are facing a crucial test over whether this process can serve as the global guidance system for tackling climate change.

There is still momentum in the U.N. process, but it is fragmenting. In the absence of U.S. legislation, and with the corresponding slow progress in the U.N., there is a new focus on national action as talks continue toward a global agreement.

This fragmentation presents challenges, but it also creates opportunities, as nations that move swiftly to embrace carbon regulation position themselves for economic growth in the 21st century. That competition presents an even greater imperative for the Obama administration to make a serious push for a balanced energy-climate bill in the U.S. Senate.
