  • Some Incredible renders of Verizon’s next Android phone

We recently learned the launch date and official specs of Verizon’s HTC Incredible, but we have yet to see some non-blurry close up photos of the phone. It might be several more weeks before the product is announced (and demo units are sent out), but someone has posted a high quality render for all to enjoy.

The phone looks a lot like the previous leaks we have seen. The red battery cover has been replaced with a black one, but all the internals of the device (battery included) are still red. There also appears to be an optical trackpad on the front of the phone, but it looks different from what we have seen on the HTC Desire and Legend. I guess we will find out shortly.

The final design could still be altered, but this is the best look at the phone I have seen.

  • Acting Nigerian President Jonathan Holds Talks With Umaru Abdul-Muttalab Before Departure to US on Official Visit

    Jonathan Parleys Mutallab

From George Oji in Abuja, 04.09.2010
    Nigeria ThisDay

Ahead of his three-day official trip to the United States (US) Acting President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday met with Umaru Abdul-Muttalab, the father of the 23-year-old Nigerian, Farouk, who attempted to bomb an American aircraft on Christmas Day last year.

Jonathan is traveling to the US on the invitation of President Barack Obama to attend a maiden Nuclear Security Summit organised by the US government.

The two leaders are expected to discuss bilateral relations at the meeting. The Nigeria-US Bi-national Commission is on the agenda, in addition to global terrorism and counterterrorism measures.

US and Nigeria had signed the Bi-national commission agreement last Tuesday in Washington DC.

Also to be discussed at the meeting between Obama and Jonathan are issues of regional security and peace-keeping. Nigeria is Africa’s largest contributor to peace-keeping.

Muttalab was believed to have discussed his earlier trip to the US with Jonathan. During that trip, he met with American security officials regarding his son’s failed terror attack and for which the young man is being prosecuted.

The act had prompted the US to put Nigeria on a list of “countries of interest”, a development bitterly criticized by the Nigeria government. The list was however reviewed last weekend, with new measures superseding the terror watch list.

Mutallab came alone to the Presidential Villa and met with the Acting President behind closed doors for close to an hour. He did not speak to the press afterwards. The Acting President is expected back home by Thursday next week.

  • Mobs Of Thai Protesters Are Camped Out Right Outside My Condo And Goading The Government To Send In The Troops

    Thailand Red Shirt Protest

I hate to say it, but there’s a pretty decent chance of a crackdown on extended Thai political protests in Bangkok right now.

While in the past, “red shirt” protesters (who are asking the government to hold new elections they which many believe the ‘red’ side would win) had either massed around key government areas of the city or Bangkok’s Democracy Monument, this time around they got smart and hit the wealthy Thais where it really hurts — they’ve massed in an upscale shopping district. Now they truly can’t be ignored by the elite.

They’re literally outside my condo, and some local contacts I’ve spoken with fear that a military crack down is inevitable should they linger since every day the mob spends in a wealthy shopping district is another day of financial losses for business owners, and a very visible scar for tourists to see. Still, using force could only build further support for the ‘red’ side, so the government is trying to avoid it at all costs… without giving in and actually holding new elections of course.

Thing is, usually these things end short and sharp in Thailand, or they just dissipate into oblivion, then life goes on as usual. Most of the rest of the city will barely notice what’s happening, and most of the elite won’t even care. They’ll just be a annoyed that they can’t stock up on some designer goods this weekend and hope the military mops the situation up so they can get on with things.

    Reuters:

“We will tear up all laws,” Nattawut Saikua, a “red shirt” leader said late on Thursday, addressing tens of thousands of the mostly rural and working class protesters who have ignored orders to leave Bangkok’s main shopping district since Saturday.

“We will move out to 10 locations at the same time,” he said. “We don’t want to call it the final day, but if we can score a knockout, we definitely will,” he said. “This is all for Abhisit to dissolve parliament.”

Thousands of the supporters of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a military coup in 2006 and now lives in self-imposed exile, had gathered in the shopping district by morning. Many had slept there on cardboard boxes.

“This is great. I think we are kicking the government right where it hurts. If they don’t give us elections, don’t expect us to give them back their extravagant way of life,” said Panipa Boonnok, 47, a seamstress from northeastern Maharasakam province, happy with the shutdown of one of Bangkok’s poshest areas.

Given that thousands of protesters are camped out right on my doorstep this time, with cars blocking streets and goading the government for a confrontation, it’s pretty good timing that I happen to be outside the country and writing this from afar.

  • iAd Solves Some Problems With Mobile Ads—But Not The Most Important Ones

    Apple iPhone Os4 iAd

The iPhone has already been credited with helping to lift the mobile ad space out of obscurity, and Apple’s new ad platform will further capture the attention of marketers and ad-agency creatives, helping to drive new revenues.

But iAd’s impact will be limited for two reasons. The first is the lack of a standard metric for mobile advertising, which continues to hold back online ad spending in general. Until Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) can solve that problem—outside app analytics companies like Flurry are certainly trying—mobile buys will continue to be modest and mostly experimental.

To put it in perspective, eMarketer says marketers spent just $416 million on mobile ads in 2009—compared to the $22.7 billion spent across the web last year, according to the latest numbers from the Interactive Advertising Bureau. The other constraint about iAd is that it’s mostly a self-interested solution. It’s app-centric, and the majority of the mobile universe doesn’t use an iPhone and that won’t change anytime soon.

In his presentation earlier today, Jobs expressed a sentiment that even many mobile ad evangelists concede as well: “We think most of the mobile advertising really sucks. We thought we might be able to make some contributions.”

But the main contribution Jobs is talking about involves making the iPhone app experience a little less vexing. As Apple explains in its release, when users click on mobile ads, they’re almost always taken out of their app to a web browser, which loads the advertiser’s site. Most of the time, that process completely cuts users off from what they were originally doing in the app. So, iAd’s solution is to offer advertisers a full-screen video and interactive ad content without ever leaving the app, and letting users return to their app anytime they choose.

This actually does solve some important issues for marketers and agencies. For one thing, users might be more apt to click on an ad if it looks better and doesn’t force them to start over when they return to their app. Even more than PC-based online ads, mobile advertising has been particularly plagued by a stunning lack of creativity. A wider, and more interactive, canvas, could result in some more spending.

But the overarching problem is that no one can agree on what is the most important mobile ad metric to track, and the systems for measuring from analytics companies are still considered inadequate. There are so many companies offering competing metrics, no one can say which is the standard. To put it more simply, the TV ad market works because everyone agrees on the value of a Nielsen ratings point. That’s missing in online advertising, and is even more elusive with mobile.

  • Yes, Authors Have Copyright Issues With Quoting Others As Well

We were recently writing about how there seems to be a massive double standard when it comes to “sampling” in books vs. music. But that was really only focused on fiction books. When it comes to non-fiction, it appears the story is a bit more complicated. Author Marc Aronson recently took to the pages of the NY Times to complain about how copyright is massively stifling non-fiction works, due to the difficulty of getting permission:

The hope of nonfiction is to connect readers to something outside the book: the past, a discovery, a social issue. To do this, authors need to draw on pre-existing words and images.

Unless we nonfiction writers are lucky and hit a public-domain mother lode, we have to pay for the right to use just about anything — from a single line of a song to any part of a poem; from the vast archives of the world’s art (now managed by gimlet-eyed venture capitalists) to the historical images that serve as profit centers for museums and academic libraries.

The amount we pay depends on where and how the material is used. In fact, the very first question a rights holder asks is “What are you going to do with my baby?” Which countries do you plan to sell in? What languages? Over what period of time? How large will the image be in your book?

Much of his concern is how these costs will multiply in an age of ebooks, but it seems like a serious enough issue from the start. Just the fact that authors who are discussing and building on the works of others are being blocked due to copyright is hugely problematic. In this context, it hardly sounds like the new works would act as substitutes for the old works at all — but could actually drive more interest in those original works. It’s difficult to see why or how copyright policy makes sense in these cases.

  • San Diego robbery suspect commits suicide after gun battle with motorcycle officer

A gun battle Thursday between a robbery suspect and a San Diego motorcycle officer ended when the suspect stopped his car, ran through a business complex and committed suicide, police said.

The incident began when a gunman robbed a Radio Shack in the Pacific Beach area and fled in a car with Colorado license plates, police said. A motorcycle officer began a high-speed pursuit and the gunman fired several shots out the window of his car as it sped along streets crowded with early afternoon shoppers.

The motorcycle officer fired at the gunman as the two raced across a bridge over Mission Bay, police said.

The gunman stopped at a business complex in the Midway district and ran inside, with the motorcycle officer following him on foot. The officer lost sight of the suspect, then heard a gunshot and found the man lying on his back, gun still in his hand, police said.

The dead man’s name has not been released. The officer was described as a 19-year veteran of the Police Department. He was not injured. His motorcycle had been struck twice by bullets, police said.

A woman passenger in the suspect’s car, Chantel Lister, 23, was arrested on robbery charges.

The case is under investigation by the department’s homicide squad.

  • Sex abuse suit filed in Texas diocese under incoming Los Angeles archbishop

A teenage boy from west Texas filed a lawsuit Thursday alleging that a priest in the diocese under incoming Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez sexually assaulted him repeatedly and that Gomez should have known the priest was an abuser.

The complaint filed in the small town of Rocksprings is the first allegation of clergy abuse of a minor to have occurred during Gomez’s tenure and made known to the San Antonio Archdiocese leader, who was just named by the Vatican to succeed Cardinal Roger M. Mahony as Los Angeles prelate. Getprev

The suit alleges that Father John M. Fiala assaulted the teenager in 2007 and 2008, including forcing him to perform sex acts at gunpoint.

Edwards County sheriff’s officials brought the reported abuse to the attention of the church hierarchy in 2008, the lawsuit said.

A spokesman for the San Antonio Archdiocese, Deacon Pat Rodgers, said in a statement that the Sheriff’s Department had advised church leadership of an investigation into Fiala but on grounds of “interference in the custody of a minor,” not sexual abuse.

A source with knowledge of the case said Fiala came to the attention of law enforcement when the boy’s grandmother, who had legal custody, reported that the priest had taken the boy on overnight trips without permission.

Gomez suspended Fiala from ministerial functions in the fall of 2008, when the archdiocese agreed to cooperate with the investigation, Rodgers said. Fiala was also removed from appointments as pastoral administrator for the three missions and parishes he served.

The archbishop, who is expected to assume his Los Angeles duties in May ahead of his takeover from Mahony next year, instructed Father Martin Leopold to inform parish communities of the “investigation into Father Fiala’s activities,” Rodgers’ statement said. Leopold has been identified by Bexar County law enforcement authorities as the archdiocese’s “point man” on clergy sexual abuse issues.

Gomez has been criticized by victims’ advocates for doing what they consider too little to address three other instances of alleged sexual misconduct by priests in the archdiocese. But all occurred decades ago, long before Gomez’s tenure, and beyond the statute of limitations for bringing civil charges against the alleged perpetrators.

The teenager’s San Antonio attorney, Tom Rhodes, told the Associated Press that the boy’s family was unaware of the alleged sexual abuse until the boy attempted suicide.

China has a very high ambitions in electric car space. Among advantages are relatively cheap qualified working force of literally thousand engineers devoted to Lithium ion batteries and Electric Cars in BYD alone. It is not a surprise that Chinese companies are so active in Australia securing supply of Lithium, whether they will be coming after Japanese companies to Argentina, Nevada and Canada we will see in the nearest future.
We have now a Chinese perspective on the potential for the market for Electric cars, China’ ambitions and its clear understanding of Lithium as a strategic commodity for ongoing Green Mobility Revolution. They are talking about the same “Golden Triangle” of Lithium as Rick Mills did in his recent report and Lithium ABCs:”

Electric cars to get a lift up from new policy measures

    By Lan Lan (China Daily)
    Updated: 2010-04-08 10:02

Beijing: Chinese automakers are set to benefit from a much-awaited government stimulus plan that encourages production of fuel-efficient vehicles, said industry sources.

The green auto plan, currently awaiting government approval, is expected by industry players to be unveiled in the next couple of months.

According to the plan, electric cars that qualify for subsidies are those that have received government’s production license and are assembled in China, regardless of whether made by domestic or joint-venture firms.

The industry sources said that imported electric cars would have little hope of benefiting from the policy in the initial stages.

Private buyers in five chosen cities could obtain incentives, with potential limits of up to about 60,000 yuan ($8,788) or 50,000 yuan per car.

Miao Wei, vice-minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has said the government planned to launch the incentives for private purchases of new energy vehicles in March. However, the plan has since been postponed.

Zero emission pure electric cars would be the preferred technological paths for new energy cars in China, which would be reflected in the stimulus plan, said sources. Other technical options include hybrid, fuel cells and hydrogen fuel new energy vehicles.

“The government’s stimulus policy, which will be released soon, will focus mainly on promotion of pure electric cars,” said Xu Changming, a senior economist of State Information Center, a thinktank under the National Development and Reform Commission.

Pure electric cars could eliminate dependence on oil and provide an opportunity for Chinese automakers to catch up with global carmakers, which already have a head start in the electric car market. For other technologies such as hybrid, Xu said it still requires advanced engine and transmission technologies, but such advancements are lagging behind at the moment.

China’s roadmap for new energy cars for current period is “giving priority to pure electric cars, and taking hybrid cars as complement”, said Zhang Jinhua, vice-secretary general of China’s Society of Automotive Engineer, who is also an official for the national 863 research program on energy saving and new energy vehicles.

Fuel cell and hybrid vehicles were targeted as the priority for new energy vehicle development in China’s 11th Five Year Plan (2005-10), but the authority’s mainstream opinion has shifted to cars powered by pure electricity, and hybrid and fuel cell technologies would mainly be applied on commercial vehicles, said analysts.

“In the long run, commercialization of new energy cars cannot only rely on government’s stimulus,” said Frank Liao, chief engineer of Chery’s automobile engineering research institute.

“The contest for new energy vehicles will last for decades and which technology path would prevail in the competition is up to market forces,” Liao said.

The first round of competition for the electric cars market share would mainly be between medium and small-sized domestic, private automakers, as large State-owned domestic automakers have acted sluggishly in the electric car research and development.

A batch of pure electric cars has rolled-off from the assembly lines at BYD, Chery, ChangAn and Zotye. BYD Auto launched its plug-in hybrid car F3DM at the end of March and tiny Zhejiang-based Zotye Auto launched its 2008 EV in January.

“Big State-owned automakers didn’t take the development of electric cars seriously five years ago and now they are feeling the sense of urgency as the smaller rivals have marched in advance,” said Wang Zhenpo, an associate professor at the electric vehicle center of Beijing Institute of Technology.”

  • MedVentive Reveals Clarian Health Deals, Banks $10M C Round

    MedVentive logo
    Ryan McBride wrote:

MedVentive is getting a big endorsement for its technology for helping healthcare groups use their growing volume of electronic medical data to save money and improve treatment of patients. The Waltham, MA-based software firm has tapped one of its largest new customers, Indianapolis-based Clarian Health, to help wrap up a $10 million Series C funding round, according to the company.

HLM Venture Partners and Excel Venture Management, both of Boston, led the third-round financing, which included investments by new backers Clarian Health Ventures and Core Capital Partners. Long River Ventures, a previous investor in the company, also funneled capital into the funding round. Nancy Ham, president and CEO of MedVentive, says that the company has now raised more than $18 million since the firm’s founding in 2005. The company first revealed the close of the latest $10 million round in an SEC filing posted on the Web in February, though it did not reveal the investors in the round at that time.

Clarian Health Ventures’s investment is notable because its parent organization, the healthcare provider Clarian Health, has recently adopted MedVentive’s software. Clarian Quality Partners, the firm’s statewide physician network, is using the MedVentive technology to analyze patient information for such uses as measuring the quality of care in doctors’ practices.

“I think the fact that Clarian did an investment as well as a commercial relationship is a great validation of our technology and our business plan,” Ham says. “Indiana is one of the most wired and connected states when it comes to healthcare information exchange, and that’s why we were particularly excited to be working now with the largest health system in Indiana.”

MedVentive’s Web-based software, which was initially developed at CareGroup Healthcare System in Boston, analyzes data from such sources as pharmacy prescriptions, insurance claims, and patients’ health records. The analyses enable healthcare providers and insurers to spot trends that can be used to improve patient care or reduce costs. For example, the software could alert healthcare organizations that a patient could be taking a more affordable generic drug rather than a branded treatment. Or, it could identify which patients frequently end up in emergency departments, indicating to their doctors that they need to improve the patients’ treatment plans to keep them healthy.

Ham says that healthcare groups’ desire to improve the quality and efficiency of their patient care has driven adoption of MedVentive’s technology over the past five years. Recent healthcare reforms in Washington aren’t hurting business either, she says. Medicare and other healthcare payers are moving away from the traditional fee-for-service model that pays doctors every time they see a patient, she says, to what is sometimes called pay-for-performance compensation, which gives doctors monetary incentives to keep their patients healthy and for providing quality care—rather than for the quantity of patient visits.

Investors see big potential returns in backing companies like MedVentive that have technology to measure the quality of healthcare. Boston-based Humedica, for example, says it raised $30 million in its first round of funding in 2008 to commercialize its Web-based analytics system that enables hospitals track quality of care, among other measurements.

  • Don’t Be Fooled Into Thinking That China’s New Trade Deficit Means Their Trade With America Is About To Reverse

    China iPhone Consumer Chinese

It’s now become clear that China probably experienced its first trade deficit in 70 months during March, according to a consensus of economists and also a statement from premier Wen Jiabao.

The deficit is expected to be tiny, at about $360m compared to a $7.6 billion surplus in February, but at the very least the country will use the data to cool criticism of its currency and trade policies.

Still, when it comes to trade with the U.S. in particular, which is where China is under the most fire due to the fact that its yuan is pegged to the dollar, China’s aggregate March deficit will likely ring hollow. This is because the key global trade imbalance — America’s trade deficit within the context of a pegged yuan — will remain.

This isn’t to say that China’s deficit is meaningless. The likely March deficit still points to an adjustment in global trade flow, whereby Chinese domestic demand is becoming a more significant driver for the world. It’s just that the March data is unlikely to blunt American anger towards the yuan peg right now.

Moreover, China’s Minister of Commerce Chen Deming has said that he expects the March trade deficit to be only temporary,a ‘blip on the radar’. The more likely China trend is that of more balanced trade, and this is what the Mr. Chen has said the government wants. The country neither wants large deficits nor surpluses, since both cause considerable problems for the Chinese economy.

A Diabetic Success – No Side Effects and the Diabetic Pack is Working

    Hello Viewers,

Customers taking our WSN Diabetic Pack are improving their blood sugar levels, noticing their energy increasing, having improved sleep and they are losing weight.

Here is what some of our customers have to say about using the WSN Diabetic Pack:

    ************************************

&quot I was on the internet a lot doing research hoping I could find some help. What I found was really great. I have been taking the Diabetic Pack now for a month.

&quot I have been type 2 diabetic for about 10 years. I have been taking Metformin 500 mg all this time with a lot of problems. I was taking 4-5 pills a day, but it would not keep my sugar level normal. In the morning it would be way up. I tried other herbs and vitamins, nothing helped. I was watching what I eat. I tried other drugs from the Doctor with no help, only more side effects from these new pills.

&quot I was taking the Diabetic Pack with my drugs and I started to see a difference in my sugar, in the morning it was staying normal. I cut back on my drugs because they were making my sugar go too low. Then my sugar started to level out. I then quit my drugs all together and my sugar is staying normal for the first time in years.

&quot The one big thing, no side effects and it is working.&quot

    RJ Woodward in Florida

    ************************************

&quot It all started when I was told that I had diabetes in 1999. I was shocked!

&quot Medical doctors were saying that there was no cure! I figured out that diabetes was nothing more than a disease of bad nutrition!

&quot I have only been on the WSN Diabetic Pack product for about a month and I can safely say that I have been off the drugs and my blood pressure and blood sugar are gradually getting better.

&quot My blood pressure used to be about 150/75 now it sits about 130/80, with no drugs! My morning blood sugar is gradually coming down as my body gets used to the change in my diet. I am getting better at what I should and should not eat to get my sugars down. It is a slow process but it is working! Thanks to the Wellness Support Network.&quot

    Jonn Kiernan in Canada

    ************************************

&quot I want to tell you how the Diabetic Pack is working for me.

&quot I have lost an additional 10 pounds in two months since beginning the Diabetic Pack. This has helped me drop the additional weight without even trying!

&quot My friends ask me regularly what I am doing. Of course, I tell them about the foods that I am eating. But I also tell them about how the Diabetic Pack has helped me not only lose the last of the weight, but it has also helped me to feel better overall since I no longer have the constant extreme drops in my blood sugar levels throughout the day.

&quot I am 44 years old, but often feel like I am a teenager again. I look better and feel better, and I most definitely feel better about myself.&quot

    Quote of the Week

&quot Behold this compost! behold it well!
Perhaps every mite has once form’d part of a sick person-Yet behold!
The grass of spring covers the prairies,
The bean bursts noislessly through the mould in the garden,
The delicate spear of the onion pierces upward,
The apple-buds cluster together on the apple-branches,
The resurrection of the wheat appears with pale visage out of its graves,
The tinge awakes over the willow-tree and the mulberry-tree,
The he-birds carol mornings and evenings, while the she-birds sit on their nests,
The young of poultry break through the hatch’d eggs,
The new-born of animals appear-the calf is dropt from the cow, the colt from the mare,
Out of its little hill faithfully rise the potato’s dark green leaves,
Out of its hill rises the yellow maize-stalk-the lilacs bloom in the door-yards,
The summer growth is innocent and disdainful above all those strata of sour dead.&quot

OCA Needs Your Help to Spread the Organic Revolution

OCA and our international network of organic consumers and farmers understand that we have a positive life-affirming solution for the global food, health, and climate crisis: organic food, farming, and ranching. But to get out our all-important message we need your support. Please send us a tax-deductible donation today.

Take Action: Rescue Local/Organic Farming from One-Size-Fits-All Food Safety Bill!

The U.S. Senate is expected to vote on a sweeping overhaul of the food safety laws very soon – possibly as early as next week. While the bill seeks to improve food safety, as it is currently written, S. 510 will actually make our food less safe. S. 510 will strengthen the forces that have led to the consolidation of our food supply in the hands of a few industrial food producers, while harming small producers who give consumers the choice to buy fresh, healthy, local foods.

Please contact your Senators NOW to urge them to amend or oppose the bill!

Congress needs to solve the real problems – chemical-intensive agriculture, factory farms, industrialized and centralized food production and distribution, and often tainted imported foods – and not regulate organic and small farms out of business. S. 510 is a &quot one-size-fits-all&quot approach that will unnecessarily burden both farmers and small-scale food processors, ultimately depriving consumers of the choice to buy from producers they know and trust.

Take Action: Don’t Let USDA Okay 4-Month Factory Farm Confinement for &quot Organic&quot Beef

The USDA wants to know what organic consumers think about &quot finishing&quot or fattening up organic beef cattle for four months in factory farm-style feedlots.

Studies show that cattle confined and fed grain in feedlots are prone to E. coli 0157 contamination, whereas healthy organic cattle grazing on grass are typically free of this dangerous pathogen. The meat from grass-fed beef is also healthier and more nutritious than beef that’s been &quot marbleized&quot in the feedlot.

Take Action: Tell President Obama and the USDA National Organic Program that you don’t want organic beef cattle to be kept in factory-farm-style feedlots for the last four months of their lives.

April 17, La Via Campesina Call to Action

To commemorate the International Day of Peasant Struggle on April 17th 2010, the international peasant movement La Via Campesina calls upon member organizations, allies and supporters to unite against global agribusiness corporations, which seek complete control over food and agriculture systems around the world. Small and family scale farmers form the backbone of the global food supply and are essential for transitioning to a healthy and organic food system.

On April 17th 1996, nineteen landless Brazilian peasants who were defending their right to produce food by demanding access to land were massacred by the military police. Since the massacre at El Dorado dos Caraj&aacute s, every year on this date actions are organized around the world by farmers’ organizations, communities, student groups, non-governmental organizations and activists, in order to demand food sovereignty and peasants’ rights to produce food.

Join Via Campesina and the Organic Consumers Association in the global struggle against multinational corporations, like Monsanto, that are threatening our food supply and undermining farmers across the globe. Visit OCA’s Millions Against Monsanto campaign center for more information.

Essay of the Week: &quot Is This Factory Farming’s Tobacco Moment?&quot by Will Allen and Ronnie Cummins

The nation’s chemical and energy-intensive food and farming system, Food Inc., is out of control, posing a mortal threat to public health, the environment, and climate stability.

Economically stressed and distracted consumers have become dependent on a factory farm system designed to provide cheap processed food that may be cosmetically perfect and easily shipped, but which is seriously degraded in terms of purity and nutritional value.

  • British army shoots itself in row over Afghan “mosque” models ?

The British Ministry of Defence has apologised after Muslims complained that it was using replicas of mosques at a firing range  in northern England to train soldiers ahead of deployment in Afghanistan.

Relations between Muslims and the military are already fragile, so what’s the point of  testing them even more by suggesting that mosques were places of danger, the Bradford Council of Mosques said, according to The Independent. The green-domed structures erected at the end of the firing range in north Yorkshire must be taken down, the council said.

A British military source told Reuters that the one-dimensional hardboard structures are not used as direct targets  but are intended to provide a more “realistic” background for soldiers training ahead of deployment in Afghanistan.  Other “generic eastern silhouettes” used include palm trees and irrigation ditches to recreate the Afghan setting soldiers would face there.   It was never the intention for the structures to look like or replicate mosques, the Defence Ministry said,  offering an apology if any offence had been caused. It said it had sought a meeting with the representatives of the community to find a way forward.

It’s not like they recreated a whole Afghan village with a mosque in it to familiarise soldiers,  says Ishtiaq Ahmed, a spokesman for the Bradford Council of Mosques.  “If they had a replica of a street or a village in Afghanistan with a mosque as a kind of location point we would understand that, but these are simply six or seven structures in the direct shooting line which anyone looking at would come to the obvious conclusion that they are mosques.”  Community leaders are even more angry because the provocation comes just when they were trying to help the army recruit more Muslims, the BBC said.

Is it really the best way to win Afghan hearts and minds for soldiers starting their tour of duty ? Or a staggering own goal ?

Some people think its a bit of an over-reaction and even misleading. Douglas Murray, writing in The Telegraph blog, said the fact is that British, and U.S. troops for that matter, are forbidden to fire at mosques or other places of worship under the rules of engagement.  But that will be forgotten in the current uproar, he says and instead the idea that soldiers are trained to shoot at mosques will get embedded.

  • Peter Schiff launches online petition drive to demand Blumenthal sue to overturn “Obamacare”

Conn. AG Richard Blumenthal doesn’t want to sue the federal government to block the healthcare overhaul because he is in “Washington back pocket,” Schiff, a Republican running for U.S. Senate, says on his website. “But Blumenthal has a sworn duty to uphold the Constitution and protect the citizens he serves, even when it means putting his personal feelings aside.”

Blumenthal, who is seeking the Democratic Senate nomination, has said he would have voted in favor of the healthcare bill.

In a press release announcing the petition, the Schiff campaign said it aims to “encourage Connecticuters to demand Attorney General Richard Blumenthal file a lawsuit against the federal government over recently passed health care legislation.”

  • Iran President to Open the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair

    Ahmadinejad to open ZITF

    By Farai Machivenyika
    Zimbabwe Herald

PRESIDENT of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, will officially open the 51st edition of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair in Bulawayo on April 23.

Secretary for Media, Information and Publicity Mr George Charamba revealed this after Tehe-ran’s incoming ambassador to Harare, Mr Mohammed Pour Najaf, presented his credentials to President Mugabe at State House yesterday.

“President Ahmadinejad will open the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair this year on April 23,” Mr Charamba said.

The ZITF will run from April 20 to April 24.

Zambia’s President Rupiah Banda officially opened the 50th edition of ZITF last year.

Speaking to journalists after meeting Presi-dent Mugabe, Ambassador Pour Najaf hailed Zimbabwe-Iran ties.

“Zimbabwe and Iran enjoy strategic co-operation partnerships . . .

“The doors and gates of Iran are always open. You do not need a visa to visit Iran so we invite Zimbabweans to come to Iran,” he said.

Ambassador Pour Najaf said Iran would soon establish a regional centre in Harare to supply tractors and irrigation equipment.

“Everything will be transferred from here including the tractors, irrigation equipment and many others,” said Ambassador Pour Najaf.

Iran’s new top diplomat in Harare holds a Master of Arts degree in English and has lectured at Iran’s College of International Relations.

Before taking up his latest posting, he was advisor to Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and also served at his country’s embassy in South Africa.

Ambassador Pour Najaf takes over from Mr Rasoul Momeni who left Zimbabwe last month.

Zimbabwe and Iran enjoy cordial relations firmly rooted in the principles of sovereignty and self-determination and have been put under illegal sanctions in their pursuit to preserve those virtues.

Iran has been maligned by the West for its civilian nuclear energy programmes, while Zimbabwe has been targeted for redistributing land held by a few thousand whites to nearly 300 000 black families.

The two countries have embarked on several joint ventures; especially in agriculture, irrigation development, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology.

Iran is also considering assisting Zimbabwe in the energy sector through the rehabilitation of the Feruka Oil Refinery, setting up a transformer manufacturing plant and a hydroelectric power plant in Kariba.

Teheran has also invested in a helicopter repair and technicians’ training facility in Zimbabwe.

  • Western Media Lies About Zimbabwe, Says Malema

Western media lies about Zim: Malema

    CAJ News-Herald Reporter.

AFRICAN National Congress Youth League president Cde Julius Malema says the world needs to be told the truth about the root cause of Zimbabwe’s problems instead of relying on lies from the Western-sponsored imperialist media.

Addressing journalists at the ANC headquarters at Luthuli House in Johannesburg yesterday about his recent visit to Harare, Cde Malema blasted the international media for misrepresenting facts about Zimbabwe.

He urged Africa to seriously consider its own destiny without depending much on “colonialists”.

Cde Malema hailed President Mugabe for remai-ning resolute, steadfast and unshaken against imperialist forces that have imposed illegal economic sanctions on Zimbabwe.

“I think we need the same fearless leadership in the ANC that will represent the people’s interests instead of pushing interests of the minority imperialists.

“South Africa needs militant, courageous but non-violent leaders to tackle our land reform issue once and for all. We are going to take the land, minerals and transfer them to our majority blacks.

“Here in South Africa the so-called willing buyer, willing seller is not paying results . . .

“Our own people are still living in abject poverty yet the minority, who are not producing much for the country, continue to challenge us in the courts.”

Cde Malema accused MDC-T of being a stumbling block to Zimbabwe’s efforts to defend its sovereignty.

He described it as a “popcorn and mushrooming” political party.

Cde Malema said while the ANC Youth League would not interfere in President Jacob Zuma’s facilitation in Zimbabwe, the youths would never socialise with “puppets” and “unpatriotic” political parties trying to reverse the gains of the liberation struggle.

“It has to be known that as the ANC Youth League we are not power-sharing mediators in Zimbabwe and we should seriously work with our fellow liberation movements like Zanu-PF and President Mugabe without fear.

“We would like Zanu-PF to retain its rural support and lead again without sharing power with anyone.

“We don’t care about popcorn opposition parties, mushrooming political parties which address its meetings in offices full of air conditioners in expensive Sandton hotels.

“We don’t associate with popcorn opposition parties, but work closely with our liberation movements to achieve our aims and goals of redistributing resources to the people.”

Cde Malema blasted the Voice of America pirate broadcast, Studio 7, for invading Zimbabwean airspace.

“We know that VOA are operating illegally in Zimbabwe while disseminating falsehoods. We hope you won’t do the same here in South Africa, otherwise we don’t take such nonsense,” he said.

Cde Malema also ejected a British Broadcasting Corporation journalist, Johan Fisher, for interfering during the Press briefing.

“Whites have tendencies of undermining blacks, here you can’t do as you please. You covered rubbish about Zimbabwe, and you would like to keep doing the same here, nonsense, bastard, bloody agent!

“When you are here, you are in our terrain and should know that this is the ANC head office. You should respect our own home. In Rome you do as Romans do, not as you please.

“You must behave according to our rules, not yours. We do not even care if you don’t come for our Press conferences, we have our own SABC.”

Fisher had tried to defend MDC-T rallies held in Sandton.

“The MDC should go to Zimbabwe to face challenges with fellow Zimbabweans, not addressing meetings in air-conditioned hotels in Sandton.”

Meanwhile, the ANC Youth League has hailed Zimbabwe’s land reform and economic empowerment programmes.

In a statement yesterday, the ANC Youth League said the “courageous and militant” land reform programme has contributed substantially to the empowerment of Zimbabweans.

“From the 4 000 white farmers who used to own farms and land in Zimbabwe, there are currently more than 350 000 Zimbabweans who are in farms. Young African people are involved in agriculture and not reliant on few white farmers who do not have the interests of the people of Zimbabwe at heart.

“In essence, the State’s greater role in land redistribution and mechanisation will contribute a lot in durably empowering the people of Zimbabwe.”

The ANC Youth League also hailed the indigenisation and economic empowerment drive as a “very brave, militant but correct method of transferring wealth from the minority to the majority”.

“There will be challenges in the implementation of these policies, but they have a potential to give the people of Zimbabwe real economic power as they will be in ownership of more than 51 percent of Zimbabwe’s wealth.

“The resilience, dedication, courage and fearlessness of the Zimbabwean political leadership, particularly the Zanu-PF leadership has far much greater potential to bring Zimbabwe to stability.”

Cde Malema was in Zimbabwe on a four-day solidarity visit hosted by the Zanu-PF Youth League.

During the visit he had an opportunity to learn more about Zimbabwe’s land reform programme and economic empowerment drive.

He also met President Mugabe at State House. — CAJ News-Herald Reporter.
