  • A Special Message From the President

This morning, the White House released a special video message from the President. Watch it here:

  • The Skills Most Entrepreneurs Lack

Entrepreneurs are a unique group of people, but they behave in patterns. In fact, as I recently wrote here on HBR, my firm’s research shows that most serial entrepreneurs display persuasion, leadership, personal accountability, goal orientation, and interpersonal skills. But in that same study, we also discovered a set of skills they do not possess.

To rehash our methods, we assessed subjects identified as serial entrepreneurs on what personal skills they possessed. Then they were compared to a control group of 17,000. As before, this group was assessed on their mastery of 23 practical, job-related skills. We measured whether skills were well developed, developed, moderately developed, or needed developing.

After analyzing the data, we found four distinct skills lacking in most serial entrepreneurs, three skills statistically significantly and one other also noticeably lacking. The statistical significance is derived by comparing the lowest ranking skills to the entrepreneurs’ top skills, as evaluated in the first study.

Key Traits of a Serial Entrepreneur

Empathy is one of the qualities serial entrepreneurs lack most. Entrepreneurs build things and solve problems for people, but according to this study they do this in hopes of a return on investment. Entrepreneurs may have high empathy on an intellectual level, in that they want to produce a product or service that will help someone. This is often, however, also tied to the entrepreneur receiving a return for their time and effort, which people with high empathy do not generally expect.

Entrepreneurial-minded people are not proficient in managing themselves and their time. In many jobs, managing personal day-to-day tasks might take away from accomplishing larger company goals, which are critical to entrepreneurs. Since entrepreneurs typically have many projects underway at one time, they simply do not have time to micromanage each. Often they need assistance managing everyday tasks and should hire or delegate them to someone who has mastered this skill.

This leads to another skill entrepreneurs lack: planning and organizing. Similar to self-management, if entrepreneurs spent time planning and organizing every task or meeting, they would never get anything else done. Once again, hiring someone to keep their calendar, organize meetings and events, keep the office de-cluttered, and help keep them on schedule can put them at an advantage.

Entrepreneurs also do not excel above the control group when it comes to analytical problem solving. They have high utilitarian motivators (potential future gains, monetary returns, new products or ideas), so their focus is often on making a quick decision. They have a sense of urgency in decision-making, and by nature they do not have time to collect and analyze the data. They see numbers as getting in their way, and they should – everyone who has told them an idea wouldn’t pan out has used data and logic to illustrate that point. For example, Martin Luther King Jr. stated, “I have a dream.” He did not say, “I have a plan and strategy.” Entrepreneurs have the vision, but need to employ people to create an executable strategy and carry it through.

Entrepreneurial-minded individuals possess a distinct set of skills that lead to great leadership and ideas. Perhaps the skills they have not mastered are equally important. With an understanding of those weaknesses, they can compensate for them by surrounding themselves with people who excel in these areas. As a leader, realizing other’s strengths and dovetailing them into your own weaknesses is key to developing a team that will carry out your grand vision and achieve goals.

  • April Fools 2013: The Ultimate Round-Up

    original

Happy April First, errybody! Yes, that’s right, we’ve reached that special, inimitable time of year. April Fools Day 2013. At TechCrunch, we have a long history of taking April Fools seriously. Deadly, deadly seriously. So, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to create a master list (which will be updated throughout the day) with the best tomfoolery, pranks, WTFs and LOLs the Internet and the tech industry have to offer.

All night and all day, whatever it takes. If a company close to you happens to break out its clown shoes in what can only be an eye-rolling effort at being funny (really, the one time of year we indulge terrible nerd jokes publicly), please alert us in the comment section. And, again, thank you for your help in advance.

We’ve tried to separate the good from the bad and the ugly — and highlight the stuff that’s actually funny — sometimes with success, sometimes not.

    So here they are.

(And, again, for our annual disclaimer: If you’re one of those folks who finds April Fools stressful because you’re constantly subject to punkings courtesy of your co-workers, rest assured that we at TechCrunch would never do that to you. Never. Never ever.)

The Great List Of April Foolings

    Google Nose

You have to give Google props. They always take April Fools Day pretty seriously, and cats are usually involved. But this year Google is poking fun of its Glass Project with some olfactory goodness. Google Nose. Smells galore. You’ve probably been wondering what Google does with all that information that it tirelessly indexes for its search engine, combing the Web with Page Rank to serve you moderately usable results. Well, it’s also been collecting scents.

Now, as Greg reports, instead of paying hundreds or thousands for its newest piece of sexy hardware, Google is now letting you type your favorite scent into its search engine, tap the “smell button” and inhale to your hearts content. Just try not to sneeze on your monitor.

    YouTube? More like NOTube, amirite?

That’s right. You heard it here first. Jordan brook the news Google has decided to shut down YouTube. After eight years, the company revealed that the whole thing has actually been an American Idol-like competition. Thank god, because for those of us that were taught that life is a competition — no enjoyment necessary — well, we’ve been a little suspicious of YouTube.

But the company has finally revealed that the competition that we know as YouTube is coming to a close, and that an expert panel of judges — YouTube celebrities themselves — will choose the winners. But don’t expect the winners to be announced any time soon. The judges will spend the next decade sifting through YouTube videos to choose said winners. Tomorrow, at midnight, the site will shut down and all content will be deleted. When it reopens in 2023, the only remaining video will be the winner. Frankly, it all makes perfect sense.

    Gmail Blue

The hits just keep coming for The Googs. Next stop on the April Fools Google Train? “Gmail Blue.” That should explain itself, but just in case, it took Google “six years to develop the technology” to turn Gmail blue. Google turns nine tomorrow, and it might as well just go for it.

A poke at Facebook? Who’s to say?

You Got Vowels? Give Twitter Money.

Twitter has announced Twttr. Who needs vowels, am I right? Not you. Or Twitter. Twitter’s new “two-tiered” service includes a free portion called “Twttr” where each tweet (or “twt”) shall contain nary-a-vowel. But just in case that has you up in arms, you can have your stinkin’ vowels back, but it will cost you $5/month.

Pretty minimal price to pay for the fundamental building blocks of, you know, the English language and all. But because Twitter is ever-the-beneficent social network, it will offer the “sometimes Y” free of charge. Well, isn’t that precious? Oh, and thankfully URL vowels are free. Twitter’s not into the whole “hidden fees” thing, you understand. It’s almost like that April Fools joke where Facebook tried to make you pay $1 to message strangers. Oh wait, that actually happened.

Try it here. More from Drew here.

    The Rest

    Netflix’s Super Grumpy Genres:

It seems like an angry intern has wiggled his way into Netflix’s genre system, with all sorts of new genres popping up for the first time today.

Other family favorites include “Movies That Are In English But Still Require Subtitles”, “Movies With Epic Nicolas Cage Meltdowns”, and my favorite, “Surreal Ballets Based on a William Shatner Album” which just lists William Shatner’s Gonzo Ballet 50 times.

    Virgin’s Glass-Bottomed Plane

Glass-bottomed boats are so last year. That’s why Virgin is stepping it up a notch with the world’s first-ever glass-bottomed plane. Richard Branson proves himself to be a peerless innovator yet again:

We hope to trial the glass bottom technology with other Virgin airlines in time and have asked other Virgin companies to support this innovative trial and launch our new domestic Scottish route. This really is a team effort from all corners of Virgin.

    Speechless.

    Sony For Pets

Sony is releasing a new “Animalia” line of products for your tech product-starved pets. And they’re really “stoked” about it. As are your pets, no doubt. Because your hamsters need to test out those Beats headphones you bought them for Christmas.

    According to Sony:

The introductory line-up includes Sony-branded products targeted at owners with dogs, cats and hamsters, with additional devices and networked services slated for release later this year. Check out this video to learn all about our new K9 4K TV, M3-OW KittyCans, and In-Cage Speakers.

    ThinkGeek

ThinkGeek has a whole new line of April Fools products that are fun for the whole family. Like this “Eye Of Sauron Desk Lamp.” My apologies if your order doesn’t go through. I’ve already bought 50 of them.

    Google Maps Treasure Mode

Google Maps wants to bring your Goonies dreams to life:

Archeological analysis has confirmed that our Google Maps Street View team has indeed found one of history’s long lost relics: a treasure map belonging to the infamous pirate, William “Captain” Kidd.

The map was found on a recent expedition in the Indian Ocean, as part of a deep-water dive to expand our underwater Street View collection. Captain Kidd was rumored to have buried his treasure around the world, and tales of a long-lost treasure map have lingered for generations.

    Google+ Photos And +Emotion

Google+ now lets you add real emotions to your photos. This would be hilarious if 25 startups weren’t currently working on/pitching this idea — outside of Google+. Because the best Google+ April Fools joke is, really, well, Google+.

    Google Analytics

Some users of Google Analytics may begin noticing that they have a few new international visitors checking out their sites. I’m just glad Google didn’t say that they were “totally out of this world.” Google is now including active visitors from the International Space Station, Control Room, who clearly have nothing better to do than to check out your WordPress blog. Here’s Carl to explain.

    Google SCHMICK

More Google. Now Google wants to help you spruce up the look of your house. They explain:

Is your house looking a bit tired and shabby? Want to make your narky step-aunt jealous? Trying to keep up with the Joneses but don’t have the money to complete an expensive reno?

Now you can give your house a lick of fresh paint for free on Street View with Google SCHMICK (Simple Complete House Makeover Internet Conversion Kit). Forgot to mow the nature strip? Deck it out with some fresh buffalo grass. Front steps falling down? Swap them out for doric columns and a pergola. Graffiti on the front fence? Cover it with so many palm trees people will think they’re on the Vegas strip.

    Google’s Levity Algorithm

    For your Google Apps pleasures:

    Toshiba Gets A Console

That’s right. Today, Toshiba is announcing its first-ever gaming console: The Shibasphere. Look out, every gaming console ever made, past, present or future. The Shibasphere is here.

The Shibasphere features unprecedented computing power, a completely controller-free interface, and Logical Aggression Monitoring that deploys positive therapeutics to prevent emotionally devastating rage-quits. Available accessories include the Shibadome, Shibasuit and Shibatote that enhance the sound, motion detection and portability of the console, and also features:

    12 core 3.5 Ghz Processors
8192 MB GDDR5 RAM Graphics Card
    809.3b Infrared Motion Detection
    1080p Full HD
    7.1 Channel Surround Sound
    5 Stereo Mini Jacks
    8 HDMI Ports
    AC Power

    SoundCloud’s Dropometer

Sometimes you just don’t know when “the drop” is going to hit in a song. Not sure what I’m talking about? If you’ve ever seen a Harlem Shake video, it’s that very short, euphoric moment where the music drops out for a second and suddenly everyone is dancing/humping something. (See a notable example from my alma mater here.) Well, now, using its patent-pending algorithm, SoundCloud will tell you when that “unpredictable and surprising moment” is going to happen, via The Dropometer:

… The Dropometer is designed to help you prepare yourself for the big moment, whether that means getting in the mental space where you can really break it down, or fixing yourself a fortifying snack.

While we first innovated the Dropometer around dubstep, we’ve identified broad utility for this new functionality across all genres. Look to the Dropometer to find out when to expect a key crescendo in a 17th-century symphony or the emotional climax in an episode of This American Life.

Love with Food Gon’ Get You High

Love With Food is announcing a new product line called Love With WEED — a monthly subscription that delivers a new high every month. For every box sent, we’ll plant a cannabis shrub along CA Route 1. It’s like Tom’s, but greener. Here it is.

    Sphero PeaceKeeper

Robotics takes a step forward today with “Sphero — Peacekeeper Edition.” The robotics maker is now offering a super-sized version of Sphero that you can control from your smartphone or tablet. And cats love it. It measures 3-feet in diameter, weighs over 150 pounds but is totally fun and lightweight and agile. The future is now, people. GoSphero.

    StumbleUpon

StumbleUpon has put together a big list of things you can to do prank your colleagues, family members and loved ones. See it here.

    RunKeeper

The next revolution in running is here. Now. And it’s really big.

Obama Takes To Crowdtilt To Fund The Debt

President Obama has today taken to Crowdtilt to help raise money for the sky-rocketing national debt. When things get out of control, you can always turn to crowdfunding.

    Here’s his note:

A PERSONAL APPEAL FROM PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA

    My fellow Americans,

Despite the best efforts of my administration, prolonged partisan debates in Congress are preventing us from a solution to our mounting national debt. Instead of bickering over taxes, we’re taking a new approach: asking everyday Americans to chip in so we can pay off our debt once and for all.

With your help, it’s time to act.
HELP PAY OFF our NATIONAL DEBT

    Samsung’s Eco Trees

Really hilarious, Samsung: “Samsung Electronics announced Eco Trees, a smart, eco-friendly air purifier that runs on solar energy.” Get it? Chlorophyll? More like Bore-ophyll. Here are all of their fresh new Eco Tree products.

    Nokia Gets Into Microwaves

With the success of its smartphones, it was really only a matter of time.

We are delighted to announce a significant new extension to Nokia’s product offering with the Nokia 5AM-TH1N6 Constellation, a touch-screen microwave oven. The Constellation sets itself apart with a superfast, water-cooled 8-core high-voltage transformer, which brings a combined performance of 5,000 watts to end-users, letting them heat up turnkey meal solutions within seconds.
‘Nokia has a proven track record and extensive IPR in working with microwave radios, so for us this was a logical next step. We can attack our competition in their core business,’ says Olavi Huhtikuu, Nokia’s director of household innovation.

‘That’s why we developed the highly innovative 5AM-TH1N6 Constellation, which will revolutionize everything from single households to canteen kitchens.’

The new Nokia 5AM-TH1N6 has even more innovative features. The device comes with the latest eye-tracking technology, which stops the food from rotating when you look at it, and it automatically adjusts the temperature depending on how hungry you look.

    BMW Gets Into Strollers

With a royal baby due this summer, we are proud to announce the launch of our limited edition BMW P.R.A.M. (Postnatal Royal Auto Mobile). Available in Princess Pink or Royal Blue, this soft-top convertible has been designed using our EfficientDynamics technology. With two or four-wheel-drive, it rides as smoothly on a polo field as it does down The Mall and comes with air conditioning and built-in extendable flagpoles as standard. For those who are ‘too posh to push’ this masterpiece of motherhood even comes fitted with N.A.P.P.I.E. (Nanny-Assisting Petrol-Powered Injection Engine).

  • PeakColo: All Channel, All the Time

    PeakColo_Composite2

The executive team at Denver-based PeakColo, which has experienced strong growth by focusing on sales of turnkey “white label” cloud offerings through reseller channels. (Image: PeakColo)

PeakColo has recorded triple digit growth annually for the last few years, but you don’t often hear about it. That’s because PeakColo is often the provider behind the provider – the company is channel based, offering white-label cloud services that are resold by managed service providers (MSPs) and value-added resellers (VARs).

The company was founded in 2006, and has powered Infrastructure as a Service (IasS) clouds for a variety of offerings, from local VARs to helping data center providers offer hybrid services. PeakColo enables its customers to supply IaaS under their own brand in a turnkey fashion. Customers include Arrow Enterprise Computing Solutions, Avnet Technology Solutions and CDW.

“Our differentiator is we’re 100% building clouds through the channels,” said Luke Norris, Founder and CEO of PeakColo. “Growth has been great, 100% each year. The adoption in the last year has picked up, with bigger names, bigger customers.”

    Filling A Need for Resellers

The company supplies and manages the nuts and bolts of an IaaS offering and acts as senior level support. There are a lot of agents, value-added resellers and system integrators out there, and many are finding they simply can’t compete without a cloud offering. PeakColo helps them snap one on. “Our customers are predominantly in the mid-market, the $50 million to $150 million or so shop,” said Norris. A customer like Arrow has around 25,000 VARS in their channel that can leverage IaaS which is ultimately provided by PeakColo.

The company has three cloud offerings, RedCloud, BlueCloud, WhiteCloud. Red is the hosted private cloud. It’s targeted to enterprises that need to meet critical governance compliance requirements like PCI, HIPAA, and SOX. It’s VMware- based, comes via vDirector portal and has an SLA of 100%. Blue is the public cloud, and White is the white label cloud. Its storage infrastructure is entirely built on NetApp.

The company has distributed cloud nodes in major cities throughout the continental United States. It has infrastructure in Seattle, Chicago and three nodes in  Denver.”One of our delineators is to eventually be in every NFL tiered city,” said Norris. Last January, the company expanded its VMware vCloud-Powered platform into the New York and New Jersey metro areas through its partnership with NYI.

    Trends in Cloud

In addition to a healthy channel market, the company is seeing various trends in cloud. While PeakColo doesn’t work directly with the end customers, they are seeing several trends in the channel. Customers are working with their VAR to get their cloud strategy together.

“The big trend we’re seeing is an enterprise production push,” said Norris. “It’s no longer solely disaster recovery and development driving cloud. There’s also a tremendous uptick of ‘geo-dispersement’, customers are picking multiple nodes.”  The company also says that VMware still seems to be dominant in terms of demand, but Microsoft’s Hyper-V is picking up.

“There’s a dramatic uptick of organizations getting out of the enterprise consumption model,” said Norris, referring to the tech cycle refresh that plagues an organization that chooses to do everything on-premises.  “Now, you’re able to drive business in a way that hasn’t been seen before.”

“A tremendous driver is helping match applications to infrastructure,” said Norris.  While there is multiple price point compression, and VARs are getting pinched, offering cloud and showing customers how to properly use it means their role is an integral one.

  • Brazos Private Equity Partners Exits Strategic Equipment and Supply Corp.

Brazos Private Equity Partners has exited its investment in Strategic Equipment and Supply Corporation, selling the company to TriMark USA. TriMark is a portfolio company of Audax Group. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The firm said that the sale represents the final realization of Brazos Equity Fund I, which closed in 2000 with $250 million.

    PRESS RELEASE

Brazos Private Equity Partners, LLC, a leading Dallas-based private investment firm, announced today the sale of Strategic Equipment and Supply Corporation (SESC), one of the leading providers of foodservice equipment, supply and design solutions, to TriMark USA, a portfolio company of Audax Group. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The sale of SESC represents the final realization of Brazos Equity Fund I, which closed in 2000 with capital commitments totaling $250 million. Distributions by Fund I have substantially exceeded invested capital, a result that is further enhanced through the SESC exit. Brazos is currently investing Brazos Equity Fund III (“Brazos III”) with capital commitments totaling $715 million.

Randall Fojtasek, Co-Founding Partner and Co-CEO of Brazos, said: “We are very proud of what we accomplished since acquiring SESC in 2005. In partnership with SESC’s outstanding management team we built the company into one of the five largest foodservice distributors in the United States through geographic expansion and the addition of key customers such as Outback Steakhouse, Logan’s Roadhouse and Ruby Tuesday. The long-term perspective we bring to our investments was rewarded with an outstanding return for our investors. We wish Marty Monnat and his team all the best as they join TriMark and contribute to its continued success as the foodservice distribution industry leader.

“The sale of SESC is also a momentous occasion for our firm because it brings to completion our first fund investment effort, which began in 2000. During the years since we closed Fund I, we have worked with so many great companies and management teams who have been partners in the fund’s success. We are particularly grateful to our Fund I limited partners for their confidence and support of our firm in its early years. Many of those early investors are still investing with us and have been an important part of our firm over the past 13 years and today as we continue to invest our third fund,” Mr. Fojtasek added.

Martin Monnat, President and Chief Executive Officer of SESC, said, “On behalf of the SESC management team and all of our employees, I thank Brazos for its extraordinary contributions towards the development of our company. We are very excited about our future as part of the industry leading foodservice distribution enterprise, an achievement enabled by Brazos.”

  • Wolfram Alpha Offers Handwritten Results for April Fools

If there’s one thing that the internet lacks, it’s quality handwritten content. For decades, computers have been slowly but surely killing off the need for actually writing anything down. Lucky for us, Wolfram Alpha is here to bring a little bit of handwritten flair to the web.

Today, Wolfram Alpha is introducing the Wolfram Alpha Handwritten Knowledge Engine, which they describe as a “more personal way of delivering computed answers.”

Ok, it’s an April Fools’ joke. But it’s a clever one.

According to a blog post, each of your queries will be transcribed and illustrated by a real live human!

“We had a thought not long ago that it would be nice to get you (the internet) a gift. One of those “just because” things to spread a bit of happiness around the world. Conventional wisdom holds that the best gifts are handmade. But making gifts by hand for over 2.2 billion people? It was a daunting challenge,” says Wolfram Alpha.

But they pulled it off, and are now offering “artisanal answers.”

Like this important question about whether or not they are, in fact, Skynet.

Even mathematical computations get the handwritten treatment.

  • Elwin Wilson Dies; Former KKK Member Was 76

Elwin Wilson, a former Ku Klux Klan member who later apologized for his racist actions, has died.

According to an Associated Press report, Wilson died at a South Carolina hospital at the age of 76. Wilson’s wife, Judy, related that he had struggled with hearth and lung problems for years, and recently contracted the flu.

It isn’t often that members of the Ku Klux Klan publicly renounce their views on race, but Wilson made news with a very public apology in 2009. He apologized directly to John Lewis, a U.S. Representative from Georgia. Wilson had reportedly taken part in a beating which included Lewis during a civil rights march in the early 60s.

Wilson admitted to being a Ku Klux Klan member in the past, but stated that he could not reconcile his religious beliefs with his racism. He recalled that he attended cross burnings, hung effigies, and threw fruit at black men during his time with the Klan.

Lewis has stated that Wilson’s apology was meaningful to him as it was the first apology he received for the violence he encountered during his time as a freedom rider in 1961.

  • Google Nose Beta Can Tell You What A Ghost Smells Like

It’s strange how some of Google’s most innovative products always seem to be introduced on April 1.

Google introduced Google Nose beta today, which taps into Google’s Knowledge Graph to help users search for smells they encounter.

With Google Nose, Google says you can “go beyond type, talk, and touch for a new notation of sensation.” Google’s “Aromabase” contains over 15 million scentibytes.

Here’s what the Knowledge Graph results look like with Google Nose:

    Google Nose knowledge graph

The technology utilizes Android’s ambient odor detection feature. Clicking “Smell” will transmit the smell for you.

As explained in the video, Google Nose is even capable of answering: What does a ghost smell like?

Google Nose would probably tie in well with that brain interface Matt Cutts was recently talking about.

This is not the first time Google has worked with the sense of smell. In 2008, on April 1, Google introduced Scratch and Sniff ebooks.

Little did we know that, on the day two of the conference, we’d meet a speaker who’d combine both.

In today’s talk, given at TED2013, Kees Moeliker illuminates how finding a dead duck one summer day changed the course of his professional life. It’s an incredible, hilarious and unexpected story. And to highlight the importance of said duck, Moeliker physically brought it on stage with him. Dead for nearly eighteen years (Moeliker found this duck outside of the Natural History Museum Rotterdam, where he works, in 1995 and had him stuffed for posterity), Moeliker took the taxidermied duck out of a plastic bag and passed it to a brave audience member.

Below, see the hilarity that ensued as this odd artifact made the rounds.

  • Android And Windows Phone Gain, BlackBerry Loses In Smartphone OS Share According To Kantar

Screen Shot 2013-04-01 at 9.26.37 AM

The big winners in the three-month period ending in February in terms of smartphone share globally and in the U.S. were Android and Windows Phone, according to Kantar Worldpanel, with BlackBerry experiencing significant declines in consumer interest and iOS remaining fairly level in most markets. The bad news for BlackBerry is that it saw its smartphone OS share decline even in the U.K., where it launched BB10 and its new hardware at the end of January.

Windows Phone isn’t really posing a threat to iOS or Android, which continue to dominate smartphone share is all markets, but it is starting to pull away from BlackBerry and Symbian when it comes to making a strong showing as a third place contender. In the U.S., Windows accounted for 4.1 percent of smartphone sales in the three-month period ending February 2013, up from 2.7 percent for the year-ago quarter. BlackBerry, by contrast, represented only 0.7 percent of smartphone sales in the U.S. according to Kantar, down from 3.6 percent during the same time in 2012.

In the U.K., BlackBerry slid from 16.8 percent of all smartphone sales in the three-month period ending in February last year, to just 5.1 percent of sales for the same span in 2013. That’s a drop of 11.u7 percentage points, during a period that included a full month of BB10 device sales. BlackBerry itself claimed 1 million devices shipped for its most recent fiscal quarter, which included BB10 launches in Canada and the U.K., but when pressed about how much of that represented actual sales, execs hedged and noted that it was “sort of” closer to between two-thirds and three-quarters of that 1 million figure on its investor conference call.

Android’s performance has likewise been strong, with big increases in many markets, including Great Britain, Germany, and Mexico. And while iOS remains relatively stable, with either small slides or gains across the board, it isn’t losing significant ground to the competition in any market: Android is eating space given up by legacy players like Symbian, which in most cases is dropping share quicker than BlackBerry. BlackBerry has the most to lose, however, since Symbian is no longer being actively developed. We’ll see if the gradual worldwide rollout of BB10 can reverse some of the losses being reported by Kantar in the coming months.

  • Samsung Galaxy S 4 gets rooted… well the Exynos 5 Octa version at least

    Samsung_Galaxy_S_4_battery_life

Sure we’re all eagerly awaiting the arrival of the hottest smartphone of the year, but that hasn’t stopped the gang at XDA from bringing the world glorious root capabilities. That’s why the gang has gone ahead and showcased its ROM is packaged with ROOT&Busybox into an image flashable via Odin. As exciting as it is to see the Galaxy S 4 being on its way to truly realizing its full potential, the gang at XDA highlights that the root method is only for the octa-core Exynos 5 variant of the smartphone, meaning the rest of us who will be on the Snapdragon version will be out of luck… for now at least.

Now if we can only get some certainty that we’ll get some custom goodies taking advantage of the Galaxy S 4′s root, we’ll be in business.

Consideration was comprised of a $16.9 million cash payment and an earn-out incentive payment of up to $8 million, payable over two years based on attained earnings targets. In addition, the Company retained certain tax benefits with an estimated value of approximately $5 million. Ferro’s pharmaceuticals business generated segment income of $2.4 million in 2012.

The divestiture follows the Company’s February 6, 2013, sale of its solar pastes assets and marks the continued execution of Ferro’s strategy to divest non-core businesses and drive earnings growth and profitability from its core Performance Materials and Performance Chemicals businesses.

The Ferro portfolio now is more fully concentrated in our core technologies in coatings and color and glass science, polymer science, and organic synthesis,” said Peter Thomas, Interim President and Chief Executive Officer of Ferro. “Together with our previously announced initiatives to reduce costs by more than $50 million, the successful sale of our solar pastes assets, and the additional financial flexibility gained by amending our credit facility, today’s announcement reflects the Board’s and management’s commitment to drive shareholder value from our Performance Materials and Performance Chemicals businesses. We will remain focused on improving return on invested capital and cash flow by streamlining operations, reducing operating costs, and pursuing select growth opportunities. We are energized by the progress we’re making and committed to reaching our value creation objectives.”

  • Facebook’s ‘new home on Android’ is a smartwatch

BetaNews has learned that Facebook’s “new home on Android” is not a phone, as widely rumored, but — get this — a smartwatch. A source with knowledge of the social network’s April 4 event contacted me after reading colleague Mihaita Bamburic‘s Saturday post: “I’m a gadget lover who doesn’t love smartwatches“.

I simply couldn’t believe that, so I contacted a truly trusted source, who acknowledged — after lots of coaxing — that the watch tip is genuine. I still didn’t believe and contacted another source, who wasn’t immediately available because of Easter celebrations. Like Mihaita, I think smartwatches are a dumb idea. About an hour ago, he (or it she) confirmed the Android timepiece will be Facebook’s show-stopping announcement.

If you listen to the Internet rumor rabble, everyone from Apple to Google to Samsung is developing a smartwatch, but Facebook could have the distinction of getting to market first. My last source shared a few nuggets of information — he had been drinking (who does that to celebrate Easter). The watch is huge, but he wouldn’t say how much other than to ask: “Have you seen those big Russian watches? Like them but thicker”.

The Facebook watch uses voice dictation and response. For example, using a Bluetooth earpiece, you can command the timepiece to read back Wall posts, dictate comments or “Like” something by simply saying the word.

Sorry, Mr. Zuckerberg, but the design concept makes no sense. Simpler and sounder approach: Develop a way for consumers to easily use a Bluetooth earpiece to control Facebook on a smartphone and let a voice-response system read back while they walk or work, instead of lifting the wrist to see or hear.

Something else: People aren’t used to recharging their watches every few days. Unless Facebook provides solar charging, it’s hard to see how battery life wouldn’t be a problem, particularly when adding Bluetooth — and a cellular radio.

One of my sources gave a kind of “wink, wink” response regarding PC connectivity. She strongly insinuated that Facebook’s watch wouldn’t need to sync to a computer, which must mean over-the-air. That suggests 2G radio at least. The only other way I see is FM, which Microsoft used for its partners’ line of smartwatches in the last decade.

Facebook has completed final technical, but not cosmetic, designs. The company plans to give out prototypes to news media attending this week’s event and launch a preview program similar to Google’s CR-48 Chromebook back in December 2010. The search and information giant gave out 60,000 computers during a broad beta test before Acer and Samsung released the first commercial models about six months later.

None of my sources would say when Facebook’s smartwatch would be available to purchase, but one hinted long before the holidays. Assuming 6 months from public prototypes to commercial products, like Google and Chromebooks, that works out to September release, if not sooner.

I’m dubious about Facebook’s plans — or smartwatches from anyone. Microsoft brought a brilliantly-conceived smartwatch strategy to market in the mid-Noughties along with well-known watchmakers like Fossil, Suunto and Swatch — and still the project fissiled. Using FM radio to keep constant connection assured users could get news, weather and other info anytime and anywhere.

But recharging was the deal breaker. Then there was behavior. Look how many people no longer carry watches because they get time from phones they regularly check? This was true during the dumb phone era, when Microsoft and partners released high-tech timepieces. The company failed in this market long before mobiles — where “smart” makes more sense — offer as much information as they do today.

April Fools! If Facebook really releases a smartwatch, then the joke’s on me.

  • Univa Adds Intel Phi Support to Resource Management Platform

Data center automation company Univa, announced the release of Univa Grid Engine Version 8.1.4 with 46 new updates, and enhanced support for Intel Xeon Phi Coprocessors.

“Our latest Univa Grid Engine version 8.1.4 has been completely customer driven and is the largest update of the last 10 months,” said Fritz Ferstl, CTO Univa Corporation and father of Grid Engine. “We are leading the industry right now in converged infrastructures supporting Big Data and Big Compute, and our customers rely on Univa Grid Engine to manage mission-critical applications – so we make sure to always stay close to them in order to support their needs.”

The Univa Grid Engine is a distributed resource management software platform, which has added over 525 updates since Univa took over the management of Grid Engine. It supports commercial enterprises in the industries of Industrial Manufacturing, Oil and Gas, Energy, Life Sciences, Biology and Semiconductors for enterprise-grade, big data applications. Earlier this year the company announced product support for ARM-based servers.

New key feature updates include an improved load collection tool for Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors to ensure jobs run on the least loaded cores. It also features extended memory usage metrics for multi-threaded applications and scheduler performance enhancements.

Coprocessors like Intel’s Xeon Phi supplement the performance of the primary processor, and have become a common feature in the fastest supercomputers.  Phi is the new brand for products using Intel’s Many Integrated Core (MIC) architecture for highly parallel workloads.

Last week Univa CTO Fritz Ferstl was interviewed by InsideHPC.com for a Grid Engine State of the Union.

  • Video Call Your Friends From Outer Space With Skype

Skype is pretty much everywhere these days. Millions of people around the world use it to communicate with friends and family. What are you going to do when you’re no longer on the planet though? How will you communicate with your family as you’re traveling to Alpha Centauri?

To further the cause of space exploration and communication, Skype announced a new service that lets space explorers connect to those who matter most. It’s called Skype into Space and it brings the “best parts of Skype… into the cosmos.”

Of course, communicating in space does present some unique challenges so Skype is introducing a number of new features to accomodate space travel:

  • Automatic video rotation If you float around in zero gravity while on a video call, the person you’re calling will always see you the right way up.
  • Extreme gravitational resilience Planning an extreme sports trip past a supermassive black hole? Don’t worry, Skype into Space can work through gravitational fields that don’t even let light through.
  • Instant messaging in space Looking to find a new life form? You’ll be able to send instant messages to any part of space, however we can’t guarantee that the potential recipient will have evolved eyes to read them with.
  • Additional language support Our experimental linguists are standing by to learn the languages of any new life forms we come across. We aim to make Skype into Space a truly universal experience.
  • You’ve probably already guessed, but this is indeed Skype’s April Fools’ Day prank. Unfortunately, Skype didn’t build an elaborate landing page for its new fake service. All we have is the above image of what Skype into Space may one day look like when we are actually able to travel further through space and communicate across the cosmos.

  • Tesla Kills The Entry-Level, 40 kWh Model S Citing Poor Demand

    teslamodels

The Model S just got a little more expensive. Tesla just announced that the company will no longer offer the least expensive Model S electric sedan. Per a Tesla press release, since its launch, only 4% of buyers opted for the 40 kWh model with its paltry 160 mile range. Instead, buyers have spent the extra cash on the more capable and better performing models.

The entry-level Model S cost $52,400 after the US Government’s $7,500 tax credit. At that price the 40 kWh Model S provided Tesla with a relatively competitive price point, putting the Model S on par with a BMW 5 Series or Cadillac XTS. But Tesla’s sales numbers clearly show that buyers didn’t mind spending more cash to get more range and better motoring performance of the higher priced options.

Tesla will still deliver a 40 kWh model to those who previously reserved one — it will just be a 60 kWh spec electronically limited to only provide 40 kWh’s of range.

At first blush it seems like a raw deal, but it’s fair. With this model, Tesla is fulfilling its end of the bargain, plus, since the vehicle will be equipped with a more powerful battery pack, the car will be quicker and more responsive than the standard 40 kWh trim. In additional, it will come packing the goods to hook up to Tesla’s ever-expanding SuperCharger network — previously an optional upgrade.

In the future the additional 20 kWh can be unlocked for $10,000, which is the current price between the 40 kWh and 60 kWh.

This announcement came along with a side note of Model S sales numbers. Tesla indicated that Model S sales exceeded the target indicated in the mid-February shareholder letter, with sales currently at 4,750 units rather than 4,500. Apparently NYT vs Musk didn’t hurt the company after all.
