  • FreeAllMusic inks 2nd major in free, DRM-less music venture

EMI has become the second music label to sign onto ad-supported music startup FreeAllMusic.com, after Universal Music Group signed on last week. The site, which takes ad-supported music in a different direction than most, has not yet launched, but could have a strong launch if it has major artists from EMI and UMG on board.

FreeAllMusic doesn’t restrict music to the browser (or an otherwise Internet-connected client) like streaming services such as Last.fm or Pandora. Instead, it plans to let users download DRM-free MP3s of songs—legit, legal versions of the songs—that are paid by advertisers. The catch is that users must watch a commercial for each download, and downloads will be restricted to 20 per month (with a cap of five per week, starting every Tuesday).

  • New Nanoparticles Act Like Burrs to Target & Latch Onto Damaged Cells | 80beats

nanoburrsWe’ve brought you stories of lab-created blood cells able to simulate red blood cells in humans, or to act like platelets in rodents and stop bleeding. Now, in a study soon to be published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, comes a new, even smaller creation for our bloodstreams: A nanoparticle that could target and latch onto only the damaged cells in arteries around the heart to deliver drugs there.

The MIT researchers, led by Robert Langer, have developed other nanoparticles to target cancer; this new particle they call a “nanoburr,” named for those seeds covered in bristles or hooks that latch onto animals passing by. Its nanoburrs are coated with proteins which can only stick to a structure in the blood vessel wall called the “basement membrane.” This is only exposed when the wall is damaged, so only damaged sections of blood vessel are targeted [BBC News]. Then the particle can slowly release the drug stored inside.

Each particle is just 60 nanometres across – 60 billionths of a metre – and consists of three layers. The inner core contains the drug in question bound to a long-chained molecule, or polymer. A middle layer made of fatty material separates this core from the outer coating of a polymer that protects the particle as it travels in the blood stream [The Independent]. Medical researchers covet this kind of targeted drug delivery not only because it could make treatment more effective, but also because it lowers the risk of exposing other parts of the body to potentially toxic treatments.

While the nanoburrs in this case were designed to target damaged or hardened arteries and release drugs to combat atherosclerosis, Langer says the idea could be adapted to target any condition that deteriorates cell walls in a similar way, as some cancers and inflammatory diseases do. As usual, however, medical use in patients remains many years away.

  • Kraft Wins Sweet Success

Cadbury has been holding out against a proposed Kraft merger, flirting with suitors like Hershey, or saying demurely that they had no plans to pair up with any one, thank you very much.  But it looks like, in the end, they’ll be marrying for money.  Cadbury’s CEO is recommending that shareholders take the 850 pence ($13.89) per share offered by the giant food conglomerate.  Insiders had hoped to find some other way, but ultimately, without another bidder, Cadbury’s lackluster performance made it unlikely that shareholders would go along.  The CEO has been under intense pressure from institutional investors who wanted cash in hand, not the promise that really, someday Cadbury was going to get it together.  Since ultimately, they’re his bosses, this was probably inevitable in the absence of a better bid from another firm.

  • Moroccan Braised Lamb Shanks

The name Morocco brings to mind an exotic land, aromatic spices in outdoor markets and Casa Blanca. Morocco lies on the northern coast of Africa, one coast across the Strait of Gibraltar on the Mediterranean and another bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Morocco has an ancient history and has been influenced by everyone from Roman to Spanish and French. These influences are apparent in the fragrant spices and ingredients used in local dishes. This dish has a touch of the French influence on Morocco in the fennel seeds and orange. A slow braise tenderizes lamb shanks in a very aromatic sauce for a wonderful, slightly exotic and mildly spicy dish. I hope you enjoy.

    Moroccan Braised Lamb Shanks

    Ingredients:

4 lamb shanks, about 12 ounces each
    1 Tbsp. olive oil
    2 cloves garlic, minced
    1 1/2 Tbsp. ginger, grated
    1 cup onions, diced
    1 cup carrots, diced
    1/4 tsp. ground allspice
    1/2 tsp. cinnamon
    1/2 tsp. coriander
    1 tsp. cumin
    1 tsp. fennel seed
    2 tsp. sweet paprika
    1/2 tsp. black pepper
    1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
    2 Tbsp. orange zest
    4 cups water
1/2 cup orange segments, cut into pieces
    1/4 cup parsley, chopped
    salt and pepper

Trim lamb shanks by removing visible fat. Season with salt and pepper if desired. Preheat a large dutch oven or other similar pot on medium high heat with the olive oil. Brown the lamb shanks on all sides. Remove and reserve. Drain any excess fat. Add the garlic, ginger, onions and carrots. Cook for about 2 to 3 minutes until onions become translucent. Add all of the spices including the orange zest. Stir to toast the spices for about 1 or 2 minutes. Add the water and blend well. Transfer the lamb shanks back into pot and reduce heat, cover and simmer for about 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Remove the lamb shanks to plate and tent with aluminum foil to keep warm. Increase the heat under the pot and reduce the liquid by about half. Add the orange segments, parsley and lamb shanks to warm.

  • Could a Deep-Sea Snail’s Shell Inspire Next-Gen Body-Armor? | 80beats

snailThe next generation of bulletproof vests and military armor could well be inspired by a deep-sea snail, say scientists.

A team led by materials scientist Christine Ortiz of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology investigated the iron-rich shell of the “scaly foot” mollusk, whose triple-layered shell gives it one of the strongest exoskeletons seen in nature. The researchers believe that copying its microstructure could help in the development of armor for soldiers, tanks, and helicopters. Their work was published (pdf) this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Scientists were first drawn to this snail in 2003 when they discovered it living in a relatively harsh environment on the floor of the Indian Ocean. It lives near hydrothermal vents that spew hot water–thereby exposing it to fluctuations in temperature as well as high acidity. It also faces attacks from predators like crabs and other snail species. But unlike other snail species, this snail survives because of its thick shell and the different properties of each of its three layers.

The outer layer of the snail’s shell is composed of iron sulphides. The scaly-foot snail is the only known animal species that uses iron sulphides as part of its structure. The middle layer is organic and much thicker than the other two. The researchers compare it to the thin protein coating, called the periostracum, seen on the shells of other snail species. The inner layer is composed of aragonite, a calcium mineral found in mollusk shells and corals [CBC]. The design of the shell apparently allows it to deflect attacks by crabs that pick up snails in their claws and squeeze them, sometimes for days at a time, in an attempt to crack their shells.

Using a device called an indenter, the researchers applied a force to the shell using a diamond tip. They discovered that the outer shell is designed to crack in a way that absorbs energy. Cracks spread only by fanning out around the iron sulphide particles. This “microcracking” not only absorbs energy, it also ensures that larger cracks do not form. What’s more, the particles of iron sulphide may blunt and deform intruding claws [The Times of India]. Meanwhile, the thick inner layer seems to absorb the mechanical energy exerted by either an indenter or a crab claw, and may also dissipate heat.

Coating armor in iron based nanoparticles that dissipate the energy of a blow by generating microcracks is “largely unexplored in synthetic systems” and particularly promising, said Ortiz. She said helmets, motorbikes, and even Arctic oil pipelines that are buffeted by icebergs could benefit from this study. Ortiz and her team are now looking at a host of natural exoskeletons to study protective design principles, including chitons, urchins, beetles, and armored fish.

  • Report: Caterham’s all-new EV coming in six months?

Caterham R500 – Click above for high-res image gallery

Sportscar manufacturer Caterham may or may not produce an electric vehicle within the next six months. A bit ambiguous, sure, but small companies like Caterham certainly have a bit more leeway when it comes to introducing new models to the public, and company head Ansar Ali has reportedly admitted to Autocar that such a project is in the works… maybe. Says Ali:

We’re trying to pull together some partners and there a lot who want to be associated with us. We want to do this properly and with the right partners, not just stick batteries in the back of a Seven…. We’re still at a very early stage. We will consider it if it works although it would never be a volume product… We have no plans to produce an electric Seven. We’re looking at motorsport applications but there’s uncertainty as to whether an electric car could handle race conditions. Is there the technology yet to support it?

So, if Caterham does find that it’s feasible to produce an electric sportscar, the new model would be intended for the racetrack only at first and would not be sold as a road-going vehicle wearing the Seven moniker. It’s unclear what partners Caterham is working with, but we’d expect a relatively lightweight lithium-based battery of some sort to keep the car as nimble as possible. We’ll keep on the lookout for more details if and when they become available.

  • China said, India said: Cyberattacks have the countries pointing fingers at each other

    chinaindia

You know how when you watch Fox News and CNN and whatnot there’s all these reports of evil Chinese (or North Korean or whoever our enemy is this week) hackers attacking poor, defenseless American servers? Well, if you believe what the Chinese government just said, then it turns out that, in fact, China is the biggest victim of cyberattacks each year. This all stems from an Indian complaint that Chinese cyberattackers had attacked computers belonging to the country’s National Security Advisor.

Right, so last week the Indian National Security Advisor claimed it was attacked by China-based baddies, a claim China disputes. China then turned the complaint on its head, saying that no! In fact, China is the biggest victim in all of this. Its biggest search engine, Baidu, which makes Google look like Ted’s Search Engine Emporium, was the recent victim of a cyberattack. Stop blaming China for everything, so to speak.

Why this is on CrunchGear, I don’t know. Actually, to be honest, we (and by “we” I mean the entire tech press) are just sorta killing time till Apple’s announcement next week. Such is life.

  • HTC HD2 official car kit gets less cool, more practical

newhtccarkit HTC’s HD2 car kit has just become a lot less cool.  Devicewire has given tracyandmatt.co.uk notice that the cradle will no longer have the old design that used a custom backplate, but a new but simpler design that attaches to the bottom microUSB port.

While the new design is now much less sexy, it is much more practical than the earlier version, as the backplate was quite thick.  The price is still a high £61 however, which is no longer justified by the innovation and design in the old version, so I suspect this will no longer be a big seller.

The cradle is available for pre-order at DeviceWire here.

  • Preventing Hair Loss: A Timely Action Is A Must

Hairs that are nourished properly never fall and add a lot to your physical appearance. Undernourished hairs often result in baldness. So you must try to keep your hairs in good condition to prevent hair loss.

Preventing hair loss only requires you to be a little more careful. A little negligence may push you towards agonizing experience of hair loss or baldness. So folks! Before it’s too late, gear up to adopt all the preventive measures and save your hairs from falling.

There could be numerous ways of hair care and you need to pick out the most convenient way. But before adopting any measure to prevent baldness, you must seek suggestions from hair care specialist. Your hair care provider would guide you in product selection for hair nourishment seeing nature of your hairs.

There are a good number of prevention options at your home that are safe as well as cost effective. You may opt for them. All prevention options could be broadly categorized in two major groups- products meant to be applied on hairs and products that are to be ingested. There are host of shampoos that claim to ensure hundred percent hair care. But I would recommend only herbal shampoos.

Natural hair care is probably best available option. For example, your dietary intake is crucial in saving your hair loss. Your diet must include zinc and vitamin B6. There could be number of other eatables that you could incorporate in your normal diet to prevent hair loss. A milk shake with banana and honey could be very useful in offering you essential nutrients required for hair nourishment.

Enhancing level of blood flow towards scalp would help in keeping hair regeneration process in good condition. Aloe Vera and Red Henna serve this purpose well. You may apply these natural products on your scalp to prevent an impending baldness. In addition to these a good number of conditioners could be used for the same purpose. These conditioners could be prepared at home. An egg and a few drops of brandy result in an effective conditioner which can be applied on scalp. Similarly a conditioner could be also made up of caster oil and egg yolk or egg yolk and vinegar. Rosemary could be used in combination of the shampoo that you use daily. It happens to be a great hair nourisher.

In the end I would like to give a word of caution. Be consistent with one product to prevent hair fall, switching over from one product to another won’t help you in your objective.

  • Reasons Why You Should Consider Natural Hair Loss Remedies

It seems like almost every single day there is a brand new product available that is supposed to be the miracle cure for hair loss.

But why buy into these fads when you can get results from using natural treatments that have been around for years?

You may be wondering why you shouldn’t bother with these new commercial hair loss products.

Well here are some reasons why natural hair loss treatments are better:

    1) The cost of commercial hair loss products is outrageous!

Almost every product out there costs quite a bit of money.

If these companies are not trying to get all the money they can from you upfront they’ll sell you a cheaper product that they claim you’ll have to keep using for months or even years if you want results.

Most people don’t have this kind of money to spend on treating hair loss.

If you read the ebook How To Naturally Regrow Lost Hair in 15 Minutes a Day you will notice that all of the techniques and natural items that this ebook recommends you can get for under 20 dollars from the grocery store.

    2) Commercial hair treatment can have serious side effects.

It is really common for commercial hair loss treatments to have side effects.

In fact you are almost guaranteed to have some sort of side effect from using these products even if it is mild.

Side effects can range from sore muscles to even sexual impotence.

Who really knows what these products are doing to your body!

On the other hand if you used only natural remedies to treat your hair loss you wouldn’t have to deal with any of this.

    3) Commercial hair loss products aren’t guaranteed to give you results.

Many people have turned against using natural remedies because they think that mystery chemicals have a better chance of giving them results.

But the truth is that you can do a much better job of stopping your hair loss if you learn how to take care of your hair properly and make sure you are getting the correct nutrients from your diet and use the regrowth techniques found in this ebook.

The How To Naturally Regrow Lost Hair in 15 Minutes a Day will show you exactly what you need to do to jumpstart your hair restoration with only natural remedies.

Aaron Foreman is a leading expert in the field of natural hair loss remedies. He recommends reading the How To Naturally Regrow Lost Hair in 15 Minutes a Day for complete information on these natural solutions.

  • Are Hair Loss Remedies Just Bogus Claims?

Something as common and as depressing as hair loss is bound to create a lot of concern all over, and what causes concern often gives rise to a number of solutions- some real, some bogus.

The result is that we have an entire industry functioning on hair loss. Numerous claims, hundreds of promises trying to ensure people that hair loss can be stopped, and if the loss is complete, restoration is possible. Naturally, most of us are quite baffled by the claims. Some say it can be done, some say it can’t be; some say medicine helps, others say yoga does; some say transplant is natural, while others call it detectably artificial.

A man with a few hair applies a ‘highly effective’ lotion and in a matter of months all of his hair are gone. This creates panic and erodes confidence of the people. Where are the answers one could truly believe?

Are these people just thugs out there to mooch people or is there some truth in the claims, one wonders often. Then, there are examples where a remedy backfired and did more harm than good.

The answer the right one is that it is true that hair loss can be checked and even regeneration is possible. However, what works with one may not work with the other. How far will the remedy cure your problem depends upon the particulars of your individual case.

Several affordable remedies are available, which are very effective and quite safe. Many treatments can rightfully boast of an FDA approval. But an FDA approval only means that the remedy is ordinarily effective. How effective it comes out to be in your case depends upon several individual factors, as the reasons for hair loss are numerous.

Therefore, the first step towards a permanent cure is determining the true cause of one’s hair loss. And the most reliable way to do it is to consult an expert, which very few of us do. Most of those who are undergoing treatment for hair loss have acted on self-diagnosis without having gone to a dermatologist ever.

Detection of the cause for one’s hair loss makes it easy for the medical practitioner to prescribe an effective remedy. One thing that must always be kept in mind is that nearly all forms of excessive hair loss have rather simple explanations, and it takes a little while for the remedy to provide visible results. So, approach a qualified and reliable medical practitioner and be patient while the treatment is on. Results will surely follow.

  • Confirmed: Windows Mobile 7 is based on Windows CE7

There have been a few rumours around about Windows Mobile 7 not being based on Windows CE. Sources that prefer to remain unnamed have confirmed the opposite to us, and that Windows Mobile 7 will in fact be based on Microsoft’s latest CE kernel, CE7.

Windows CE 7 has been in development for some time now, and we have written about the purported features of the OS some time ago:

Chelan is to support the following key features.
       – Dual Core Support (SMP, ARMv6)
       – Visual Studio 2008 Plug in
       – WIFI Positioning System
       – Bluetooth 2.1
       – Cellcore
       – DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance
        -DRM
       – Media Transfer Protocol
       – IE7 Rendering Rich Media Plug-Ins
       – NDIS 6.1 support
       – UX C ++ XAML API using technologies like Windows Presentation Foundation and Silverlight for attractive and functional user interfaces
       – Touch Input

This certainly mesh well with other rumours regarding the advances specs support of Windows Mobile 7 including support for the latest processor technologies such as on the new QSD8672 – a dual core snapdragon device supporting 1080p video and WSXGA screens (more specs here).

Seems a bit of an overkill for a Zune phone, but we are still expecting to find out pretty soon about the many brnaches of Windows Mobile 7

  • GM CEO: Price For Chevy Volt Will Be In The ‘Low 30s’… Except Not Really

    AP Ed Whitacre

General Motors CEO Edward Whitacre shocked the automotive world Monday when he stated that the 2011 Chevrolet Volt hybrid would “sell in the low 30s” and “we’ll get a margin on that,” Green Car Advisor reports.

That’s because it won’t. GM spokesman Dave Darovitz had to correct Whitacre, revising his statement to mean that after a $7,500 credit, the car would sell for somewhere in the low $30,000 range.

The $7,500 refers to a federal tax credit that purchasers of the 2011 Volt will receive.

  • Never Mind the Valley: Here’s Austin

Settled in the 1830s along the banks of the Colorado River and named for the Father of Texas Stephen F. Austin, the city of Austin is known for its thriving music scene and as the home of the University of Texas (UT) Longhorns. But in the past few decades, the Texas capital has built up a reputation of a different sort.

With companies headquartered in Austin like Dell and Freescale Semiconductor, a spin-off of Motorola, the city has become a hotbed of information technology hardware and software. In the mid 1990s, Austin was put on the map by software companies like Motive, Vignette and Tivoli, the latter of which was quickly scooped up by IBM in 1996.

    Sponsor

But something these companies have in common other than their birthplace is that they were all funded by Austin Ventures, the earliest player in the venture capital industry in the city.

“Austin Ventures was pretty much the only significant game in town when it came to funding, and they knew IT software best,” says Jonas Lamis of Tech Ranch Austin, an incubator for early-stage startups.

With help from Austin Ventures, dozens of technology companies have grown out of Austin – several of which have been acquired by top IT companies like IBM, Alcatel-Lucent, Hewlett Packard, and Sun Microsystems, to name a few. With just under $4 billion in assets, Austin Ventures has become the largest non-coastal venture capital firm in the United States.

Lamis says that while a less “sexy” vertical like IT still pays the bills, its proliferation in the Austin area has been both positive and negative.

“The good news is there’s a vibrant market for it,” Lamis told ReadWriteWeb. “The bad news is that consumer internet startups were missing from Austin and even today there’s very few of them.”

But there are exceptions to every rule. Smaller startups like Gowalla, Socialware, Piryx and OtherInbox, as well as larger ones like Bazaarvoice, Spiceworks and SolarWinds have all found a home in Austin. And of course one would be remiss to forget the Austin community’s pride and joy, the interactive portion of South By Southwest (SXSW). A yearly showcase of some of the hottest startups and emerging technologies, SXSW has served as a launch pad for now ubiquitous startups like Twitter and Foursquare.

Another industry thriving in the Austin startup scene is biosciences and environmental businesses, spurred by the Austin Technology Incubator at the University of Texas. In addition to IT and wireless, ATI hosts divisions devoted to helping launch startups in the clean-tech and bioscience industries. Executive Director of the Austin Wireless Alliance and ATI Director Bart Bohn says the last few years have seen a large uptake in traction for clean energy startups.

“One event that signaled the transformation was the first Clean Energy Venture Summit in May of 2007 in Austin,” Bohn told ReadWriteWeb. “Thirty to forty investors came to listen to 15 or so startups, and 400 people attended. It was standing-room-only in biggest ballroom we could find.”

Along with other groups such as CleanTX and the Solar Energies Entrepreneurs Network, Austin has quickly become known for clean energy innovation. Another organization, the Pecan Street Project, a coalition of various organizations and Fortune 100 companies, plans to redevelop an old municipal airport just a few miles from the UT campus into a community hooked into a smart electrical grid.

This blending of unique industries in Austin is just a small part of what makes the city unique from other entrepreneurial communities like Silicon Valley. Mike Maples of Maples Investments knows the dichotomy that is the relationship between the Valley and Austin because his Silicon Valley-based agency invests roughly 20-25% of its money in Austin-based startups.

“Silicon Valley is an acceleration machine for sure, but the downside is there can be a flight of talent to the winning ideas,” Maples told ReadWriteWeb. “Austin is a better place to have a stable base of people working at a company.”

While Maples recognizes that Silicon Valley is a mecca for startups, he also says that arguing one over the other is like comparing apples to oranges – each has its pros and cons.

“The other issue is that sometimes Silicon Valley is like 9-year-olds playing soccer, they just all chase after the ball,” says Maples. “Austin benefits from that. You get the occasional idea that no one in Silicon Valley cares about, but its a great idea.”

Helping the Austin startup community take advantage of these opportunities are the numerous organizations and events in the city. Tech Ranch Austin, Capital Factory, Bootstrap Austin, Conjunctured, and the Austin Technology Incubator are just a few of the organizations working with Austin startups. Some of the more popular events in Austin include of course SXSW, Mobile Monday Austin, TeXchange, Austin Tech Happy Hour, and Ignite Austin.

Maples envisions only more growth from the Austin community in the future and encourages them to not mimic Silicon Valley. Instead he suggests they jump ahead of the curve to the next big thing, which he says could be the consumerization of their already massive IT businesses.

“For Austin, the opportunity is to merge software and services,” Maples says, encouraging the city to focus on what it knows best. “Always try to be your best self.”
