  • Review: Social Cognition Skills Training in Schizophrenia

The paper reviewed here is ‘Social Cognition Skills Training in Schizophrenia’ by Horan and colleagues. In this  study, the authors are looking to see if a new social cognition skills training program that they have developed is effective at improving social cognition. They begin with a brief observation that while symptom control in schizophrenia has been effective this is not necessarily linked to functioning. They discuss the term social cognition very briefly in the introduction. I find this concept quite complex and it is probably in a state of flux at the moment. They then look at some of the evidence suggesting that there can be difficulties with social cognition in schizophrenia and then summarise some of the research into methods that improve social cognition in people with schizophrenia. Such approaches include the Training in Affect Recognition program and Social Cognitive and Interaction Training (SCIT). The researchers observe that in a number of studies in the area of social cognition skills training in schizophrenia there were no control groups, it was not clear if the changes in skills resulted from a confounding improvement in general cognition and also the studies had not looked at inpatients.

In this study, the researchers conducted a 6-week trial with 34 participants. Subjects met the DSM-IV criteria for schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder and were recruited from a healthcare centre in Los Angeles. 60% of the subjects in the social cognition group were African-American and 27% caucausian while 50% of the subjects in the control group were African-American and 31% caucasian. 26 of the subjects were taking atypical antipsychotics (not in combination with typicals). The control group underwent an ‘illness self-management and relapse prevention skills training’ program. They give a broad overview of the control program which includes a ‘fully manualised training program’ with videos and scripted exercises that focus on 4 areas which include identification of relapse warning signs.

The intervention consisted of ‘two 6-session phases’ which covered

    (a) ‘Emotional and social perception’.

    (b) ‘Social attribution and Theory of Mind’.

In the first phase, the subjects underwent training to identify ‘basic emotions on the face and in the voice’ borrowing from established programs and using ‘computerised facial affect perception training exercises.. and facial mimicry exercises’. Training continued with ’social cue perception skills and social context appreciation’. This involved recognition of social norms and non-verbal gestures.

In the second phase, paranoia was considered as an emotion and the subjects were trained to distinguish between ‘useful’ suspicion and ‘harmful’ suspicion, between facts and guesses and checking out beliefs with the evidence.

The four social cognition outcome measures were

    (a) The Facial Emotion Identification Test

    (b) The Half-Profile of Nonverbal Sensitivity (PONS)

    (c) The Ambiguous Intentions Hostility Questionnaire (AIHQ)

    (d) The Awareness of Social Inference Test (TASIT)

I couldn’t see the details on the validity and reliability for each of the above although the researchers have cited the original papers.

Cognition was assessed using the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB).

The researchers use the ANCOVA for the primary outcome measures which consist of the differences in the cognition and social cognition measures between the two groups.  Essentially there was a significant between group effect only for the facial affect perception. What this meant was that on this measure the social cognition skills training group improved significantly more than the control group. A ‘moderate to large effect’ was noted in the social cognition skills training group. There wasn’t a significant difference between the groups on the MATRICS.

I thought this was an interesting study. This is a relatively short trial at 6-weeks and it would be interesting to see if the effects are sustained and if they are replicated in a larger group given the promising initial results.

  • Report Confirms FBI Misuse of Authority to Obtain Phone Records

The Washington Post reported today that the “FBI illegally collected more than 2,000 U.S. telephone call records,” using methods that FBI general counsel Valerie Caproni admitted “technically violated the Electronic Communications Privacy Act when agents invoked nonexistent emergencies to collect records.”

This issue first came to light in a March 2007 report by the DOJ’s Office of the Inspector General, which revealed that the FBI’s Communications Analysis Unit (CAU) had routinely been using “exigent letters” to obtain customer information from telecommunications companies, including Verizon and AT&T.

“Exigent letters” are informal requests (i.e., not subpoenas, warrants, court orders, or other statutory requests) that ask telecoms to provide “call detail records” about particular subscribers, and, in some letters, illegally asking telecoms to disclose the subscriber’s “community of interest” (friends of friends’ phone records).

A follow up Office of the Inspector General (OIG) report, released early last year, found hundreds of illegal letters, while today’s report uncovered thousands. The 2009 OIG report determined “that by issuing exigent letters the FBI circumvented the NSL statutes and violated the Attorney General’s Guidelines and internal FBI policy.” Courts have agreed, concluding that the emergency exception is reserved for voluntary disclosures in response to specific and urgent emergencies. Since the FBI has kept secret whose records were subject to these illegal letters, the victims will be unable to seek redress in court.

In a press release today, the FBI contends that the misuse stopped in 2006, and that it now has “numerous systems to ensure compliance with all the legal requirements associated with their requests for telephone records.”

This is a song we’ve heard before. Former Attorney General Gonzales told Congress in 2005 and 2007 that there were no problems with National Security Letters, when documents would later show that Gonzales was well aware of problems. A high-profile misuse of a National Security Letter went unreported for two years, even though the matter received the personal attention of FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III, as well as officials with the FBI Office of the General Counsel. These misuses came to light as a result of EFF’s FOIA Litigation for Accountable Government (FLAG) Project.

Likewise, the exigent circumstances letter problem persisted for years, unreported and unremedied. Reform did not happen when the FBI Office of the General Counsel first learned of the illegal practice in 2004. Only after public disclosure in March 2007 did the FBI begin reform efforts.

Nor did NSL misuse problems stop in 2006, as the FBI might have you believe. An August 2007 FBI legal memorandum asserted an extremely broad view of the NSL statute, which the DOJ later determined (in November 2008) was incorrect.

Openness and transparency is the only solution to keeping the misuse of investigative powers in check. Through our FLAG Project, EFF continues to pursue a Freedom of Information Act case against the government, seeking more records of the misuse of National Security Letter authority. The violations revealed today were not disclosed by the FBI during the course of our pending lawsuit, and we intend to raise that issue with the court.

  • Perinatology thinks I’m Type 1

I had to do the C-Peptide test in order for my insurance to justify the purchase of the Dexcom GM (CIGNA dictates it as a pre-requisite) and the results came back that I am basically making NO insulin on my own. Before the pregnancy, I was taking Byetta 10mcg twice daily with 2g’s of Metformin and, yes, I had a severe case of dawn phenomenon but my HbA1c was at 6%. Morning sugars were always around 125-150. I am 34 weeks along, now they are talking about possible inducement at 38 weeks if the insulin they put me on (switched from Novolog to U-500) doesn’t show an improvement in my current numbers.
I am really insulin resistant with this pregnancy. I have to bolus 45 minutes before I eat and my sugars still shoot up before the insulin crests and the sugar creeps down.

Has anyone else been type 2 and this happen or have the members here always been type 1?

  • Battle of the Vaporware Tablets

Do you know what tablet computers and jetpacks have in common? It’s not a kerosene-burning jet engine strapped to your back, though Adobe Flash on a MacBook can feel like your pants are on fire. The shared problem is that the present reality of future technologies always seems to disappoint, often resulting in products never coming to market.

It’s called vaporware, and that would include the long-rumored Apple tablet. That tablet, like other Apple products that actually exist, has been getting all the attention as of late, and that’s a shame. There are a number of other existentially-challenged tablets not out there right now. Here are my top five, ranked by the likelihood they will remain in the ether for all time.

    #5 CrunchPad/JooJoo

Michael Arrington’s CrunchPad was supposed to be “a dead simple tablet for $200,” but has ended up as a combo $500 webpad and Silicon Valley legal drama. Arrington’s partners, FusionGarage, dumped him and claimed ownership of the renamed JooJoo, which means “magical device” in “African.” Note to FusionGarage: “African” is not a language.

Overhyped by Popular Mechanics as one of the “most brilliant” products of 2009, there’s really nothing magical about JooJoo’s specs: 2.4 pounds, 12” display, 4GB SSD, Wi-Fi, camera, up to five hours of battery life. The OS runs a customized Ubuntu and WebKit browser. It’s the ‘browser as the OS’ concept, similar to what Google’s doing with Chromium/Chrome, but without the backing of a company worth $200 billion.

Despite perpetually shipping in “8 to 10 weeks” since early December, and the uncertainty of litigation, JooJoo probably will ship in early 2010. That earns it fifth place among vaporware tablets today.

    #4 Freescale Smartbook

Nothing says vaporware like “reference design,” and that’s the Freescale Smartbook. The former Mac PowerPC fabricator showed off a tablet prototype—another vaporware synonym—at CES. Freescale claimed the tablet could be made for $200 and reach market by summer, easy to say when you’re not doing the making.

The Smartbook is built around a 7” display and weighs less than a pound. Internal specifications include a 1 GHz ARM CPU, 512MB RAM, 4 to 64GB storage, microSD slot, Wi-Fi, 3G modem option, and camera. All-day battery life is promised. There’s also an optional keyboard and docking station that when combined with the giant bezel makes the screen look minuscule. The operating system demonstrated at CES is custom Linux, but doesn’t appear much customized for touch.

Unlike the CrunchPad, the Smartbook probably won’t even make it to the perpetually shipping phase of the vaporware life cycle, but at least one has been built.

    #3 OLPC XO-3

The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) organization has provided the world’s poorest children more than a million computers and counting, and the XO-3 will never be one of them, but then it doesn’t have to. “We don’t necessarily need to build it,” OLPC founder Nicholas Negroponte told Forbes. “We just need to threaten to build it.” With a design goal like that, how can you fail?

Hypothetically available in 2012 for $75, the XO-3 “will feature a new design using a single sheet of flexible plastic and will be unbreakable and without holes in it.” The page-sized display, 8.5 by 11 inches, will have “both reflective and LCD capabilities,” making it viewable in the sun and as an e-reader. Internally, the XO-3 supposedly will have an ARM CPU running at 8 GHz, though Negroponte admits that’s a “provocative” target. You think? People in the Star Trek reboot don’t have kit like this, so yeah, provocative works as well as vaporware.

    #2 Microsoft Courier

In 2001, Bill Gates introduced the Tablet PC to the world, and nearly a decade later Steve Ballmer did it again, but not with this device. Instead, a wildly gesticulating Ballmer claimed the “Slate PC” moniker at CES, showing off a nameless, nothing-new tablet from HP that will be available sometime this year, not that anyone cared. People wanted Courier.

That’s the name of this device, as first reported by Gizmodo in September. The booklet—so much for Slate PC—has two 7” displays connected by a hinge, multi-touch and stylus input, camera on back, maybe inductive charging for power. The OS appears to be designed for the device, so it’s not a Windows 7 tablet, and there are plenty of applications designed for it, so it’s not Windows 7 tablet. No word on battery life, price, or availability, except that it’s supposed to be in the “late prototype” stage of development, which makes one wonder why Courier wasn’t at CES.

Just watching the concept video for Courier, how could one not declare Microsoft the winner in the Battle of the Vaporware Tablets? Because once again Apple has been there and done that.

    #1 Apple Knowledge Navigator

Even twenty years later, the Apple Knowledge Navigator concept reigns supreme among vaporware tablets. Opening the booklet reveals a pair of magical panels that appear to merge into a single display, that display having speakers on the sides, web camera and data card slot on the top. Nice touch how it tilts upward for typing, but touch is almost an afterthought.

Most of the machine-human interaction is done via a bow-tie wearing “agent,” or AI, through voice. This is vaporware at its finest, not just a demo, but like living in alternate reality, just like Apple in the late ‘80s under John Sculley. We will see whether Apple under Steve Jobs, who killed Apple’s first tablet, the Newton, can do better. Don’t expect talking heads in mock-turtlenecks, but it would be unwise to bet against the real Apple tablet in 2010.

  • Russia May Legalize Polygamy for “10 Million Lonely Women”

    http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2006/jan/06011308.HTM

MOSCOW, January 13, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The polygamy trend is catching on around the world. In an interview with a Russian radio station, Ramzan Kadyrov, a militia leader and Deputy Prime Minister of the Chechen Republic, said that the depopulation of Chechnya by war justifies legalizing polygamy.

“(Polygamy) is necessary for Chechnya, because we have war. We have more women than men,” the pro-Moscow Kadyrov told Ekho Moskvy radio. The Muslim Chechen rebels are fighting to gain independence from Russia and are largely of the fundamentalist Wahabist sect.

In response to the suggestion, Vladimir Zhirinovsky, Deputy speaker of the State Duma, said the idea of introducing legal polygamy in Chechnya is “absolutely right,” and proposed to spread it for the whole of Russia.

“We must welcome (this idea) and spread (polygamy) for the whole Russia because we have 10 million lonely women.”

Zhiriniovsky said it is necessary to “allow the registration of the second and the third marriages without dissolving the first one. We will surely introduce such an amendment to the family code and to the Russian Constitution during the parliament’s spring session.”

Many commenters are warning of the effects on women of the “Islamicization” of Europe. Already in some European Union countries, the traditional protections for women and families are being undermined by demands of the growing Muslim population for the adoption of aspects of Islamic “Sharia” law, including polygamy.

In November 2005, Norway’s Directorate of Immigration (UDI) reported that despite its illegality, polygamy is becoming increasingly prevalent in the country. Similar reports are coming from France and the Netherlands has legalized the practice in spite of the recent anti-Muslim backlash in that country.

Today, the Canadian Liberal government revealed that the Canadian federal Justice Department has recommended legalizing polygamy.

  • Difference Between Dog and Cat People

University of Texas at Austin tackled a very fun project: What’s the difference between dog and cat people? Sure, some people claim to love both dogs and cats, but I’m one of those who thinks that deep down, each of us is either a cat or dog person. Me?

    dog-cat-people

In case you haven’t guessed, I’m a cat person. It’s not that I don’t like dogs. I’ve even worked with dogs before in a boarding setting, but it’s cats that have my heart with just a glance.

Using an online questionnaire about personality that measured conscientiousness, extraversion, openness, agreeableness and neuroticism, the researchers found that people who identified themselves as dog people (regardless of gender) were more agreeable, conscientious and outgoing.

People claiming to be cat folks were more neurotic, but also more open, nontraditional or creative. Of course, that doesn’t mean cat people are neurotic, but just that they scored higher on that personality trait than dog people. The pet research was part of a larger personality study including 4,500 people. Read more about the pet study at CNN.

  • Back against the wall, Trigg still loves fighting

Why keep going? It’s a recurring theme when talking about UFC 109. Randy Couture, Mark Coleman, Matt Serra and Frank Trigg keep fighting in spite of all being over 35. Trigg loves the competition, the training and comraderie. He switched Las Vegas camps for this fight from Couture’s gym, Xtreme Couture to Cobra Kai.

"I’m seeing the same stuff in a different light," Trigg said of his work with new trainer Marc Laimon. "You’re teaching an old dog new tricks. It’s still kind of cool, still kind of neat."

On Monday, Trigg was sharing the mat with Jake Rosholt, Forrest Griffin, Shane Roller, Johny Hendricks and Vinny Magalhaes. It’s amazing what returning to the gym does to boost your enthusiasm for the game. Trigg was down in the dumps and contemplating retirement when he suffered a quick defeat at the hands of Josh Koscheck back in September. Now he’s talking about making a run over the next 12-24 months.

Trigg’s 16-year-old son Frankie also delivered a little perspective without even knowing he was motivating Dad.

Trigg overheard his son (1:15 mark) on the phone, "I heard him say how he likes what I do. He doesn’t really care whether I win or I lose. It’s just the fact that I put my nose to grindstone. From a pride aspect that’s kind of cool for me."

During his conversation with Cagewriter, Trigg wasn’t much into trash talking Serra, his opponent at UFC 109. Why bother? It’s unlikely to have any affect on the veteran fighter. But Trigg did bring up the question of who has more motivation. Serra owns several jiu-jitsu gyms on Long Island and appears to making be a nice living without stepping into the Octagon.

"When I’m punching him in the head, he’s going to be thinking in the back of his head, ‘You know, I can teach a couple more guys, make a lot of money doing that. Why am I going to keep getting punched in the face?’ "

Trigg pointed out that his situation is different. He wants to get into broadcasting when his fighting career is finished but right now he’s not exactly rolling in the dough. During the summer, Trigg signed a four-fight contract to return to the UFC. He thinks a second straight loss may mean the end of his second run with the promotion.

We also tossed around what’s in it for the winner? A win for Serra may earn him another shot at Matt Hughes. For Trigg, he just wants a win to get mentioned as a guy in the top 10. He said Trigg-Hughes III isn’t really desired by either fighter.

  • Sort Of Bring Your Old Car Into the 21st Century With Brando’s Bluetooth Steering Wheel MP3 Player [Carelectronics]

Brando’s new Steering Wheel Bluetooth MP3/FM Car Kit is a wacky little device that hangs on your steering wheel, giving you all sorts of different features probably done better by a nice in-dash stereo kit.

First, there’s a Bluetooth speakerphone for hands free driving, including an ugly little Bluetooth headset. There’s also a built-in MP3 player that reads files off microSD cards and transmits audio to your stereo via an FM transmitter.

The phonebook holds 600 numbers, the battery is rechargeable, and this thing seems like a crappy substitute for any number of better gadgets. But hey, for $48 it’s probably one of the cheapest ways to get all of these features into a beater you don’t feel like upgrading with a nice in-dash stereo. [Brando via CrunchGear]

  • Stationary fire extinguisher Gabar

Besides mining equipment, PRODECO a.s. offers – as the only one in the Czech Republic – aerosol stationary fire extinguisher Gabar.

    General characterization

The fire extinguisher Gabar (SHZG) consists of aerosol extinguishing generators and an electronic control system Schrack Seconet.

Gabar generators are used for volume extinguishing of fires class A and B and for inertization of explosive environment. It reliably extinguishes fires of solid substances, inflammable fluids, substances dissolving in high temperatures, inflammable gas, electric equipment in industrial buildings, store-houses, residential buildings, office buildings and garages. It can be used for all type of oil products, plastics, heat insulations, cable insulation, gases, river- and sea crafts and other types of transport vehicles. By activation of generators a cooled aerosol is produced and they enable multiple usage. Gabar generators can be used for fire protection and anti-explosion protection in spaces up to 12m high with volume not exceeding 5000m3 with existing electric equipment without limiting voltage.

The extinguishing mechanism works on a principle of active slowing-down (inhibition) of chemical reactions accompanying the combustion process. The main role in the inhibition plays the solid phase of aerosol. Thanks to an especially soft dispersion of the solid phase (size of the solid phase particle ranges around 1µm) aerosol remains airborn keeping its extinguishing capacity for 40 min.
Aerosol is a highly effective extinguisher and can be used as a replacement of halon extinguishers (1211, 1301, 2402), usage of which is prohibited. It does not damage the environment.

The extinguisher is equipped with en electronic system Schrack Seconet, type Integral C. Exchange Integral C is connected to power supply 230V, in case of fall-out loss the system is automatically switched over to a stand-by power supply. Stand-by operation is guaranteed for 72 hours, out of which is 15min alarm. The power supply functions and operational parameters are monitored permanently.

The whole system consists of modules on a circular line which guarantees a 100% functioning of the system. The circular line contains these modules: Button detectors – used for start of extinguishing in the given part of a building Output relay modules – relay contacts trigger liberating voltage for extinguishing generators Gabar. All states of the system Gabar (operation, alarm, failure) are optically and acoustically signalled in the exchange Integral C.

Linkage of starting push buttons and relay outputs or groups of them are made by means of a configuration software and it is possible to change or modify them anytime according to current needs. Each output is delayed so that in case persons are present in a space that is going to be extinguished they could leave the space after an acoustic signal. Time to leave the space, i.e. delay of extinguishing can be set.

Electric distribution system in the protected spaces consists of fire-resistant halogen-free twin cables and signal distribution system is made of shielded conductors. Fire-resistant cables ensure 180min function in fire.

Feeding 23V AC is done by fire-proof halogen-free cables.

The D-F series for Flexlink, D-R for Rotzinger and D-B for Bosch are adapted for the respective transfer chains. They consist of an electronic cabinet with a support and demagnetizing coil. The rings are transported from the line into the coil, one at a time. When the ring is at the centre of the coil the demagnetizing pulse is applied without stopping the piece.

    Electronic Demagnetizers, Characteristics and performances:
Minimum residual magnetism, Minimum energy consumption, Absolute reliability and durability, High productivity, Highest demagnetizing values repeatability, Easy movement without magnetic retention, Easy adaptation to the customer’s line.
