  • Nantes’ Natural History Museum

    Nantes, France | Natural History

Created at the end of 1800s, this beautiful museum has a rich collection of both minerals and animals (skeletons and taxidermy) and a nice vivarium. The collection of bird taxidermy is especially rich with some rare and fascinating specimen.Among the rarities contained in the museum hides a treasure, an extremely rare and even mythical phenomenon: a “Rat King”.

It is said in folklore that sometimes a group of rats can get their tails knotted together in an inextricable way. They will spend the rest of their lives joined together, sometimes even getting their skin welded together, becoming a kind of monstrous single entity dependent on its community for food.

Most reported cases have occurred in Germany, and only a handful of cases can be found in museums, including this one consisting of nine rats preserved in an alcohol bath. This phenomenon is unexplained and the specimens are often considered as hoaxes and belonging to the field of cryptozoology.

Pictures and filming are allowed in this museum.

  • Sony (SNE) Stock On NYSE At Highest Levels Since September 2008

At the time of publish, Sony’s (SNE) stock on the New York Stock Exchange is at its highest level since late September, 2008 – at 34 points. Many of us remember when the stock dipped (along with many stocks in the market) to abysmal levels when it crashed down more than 15 points in month and hit an all time low in Feburary 2009. The stock has grown in value ever since that time, remaining stable throughout most of 2009 at 20-30. However, since CES 2010, Sony’s stock has been on a rise to levels that haven’t been seen since the downturn in the US economy. This is powerful for Sony, as it signals investors are much more confident in the tech sector, but also positive about Sony’s strategy this year.

Investors and analysts have good reason to be upbeat – Sony’s product line for 2010 is probably its most cohesive in known memory, and they also had strong sales during the 2009 holidays. Sony is preparing to flood the market with an aggressive range of TV’s in many price ranges (and have set hard goals to raise their ranking in the top TV seller spot). Sony is also a big player in ushering in the 3D TV era, and have defined new plans to integrate an entirely new networked content strategy. We also commend them for making some smart plays in their other product offerings. Did we also mention that the PlayStation brand looks much better than ever with its recently released PS3 slim and upcoming firmware update to make it one of the first Blu-ray 3D players and 3D gaming devices?

  • How to fix the Nexus One 3G issue

    Nexus One 3G Fix

If you’re a Nexus One owner, you may be well aware of the 3G issue that the device has, where it won’t connect to (or stay connected to) 3G, constantly falling back to EDGE. We know not all have experienced this oddity, but it’s enough of a problem that we’ve been getting emails about it, asking if there was a fix. Luckily, Kevin Tofel over at jkOnTheRun seems to have figured out a fix, and it’s simple to do:

    • Go into Settings
    • Select “Wireless & Networks”
    • Choose the “Mobile Networks” option near the bottom
    • Go into the “Network Operators” section. The Nexus One will do a search for GSM networks around you.
    • When the search is complete, tap the “Select Automatically” option. The phone should respond with “Registered on network.”

That should do it! According to Kevin, he hasn’t been able to get 3G access from his home in the 10 days that he’s had the device. After doing the above, he’s been speeding along on 3G non-stop, even after reboots. If you’re experiencing similar issues, give it a try, and let us know how it works for you!

  • Kon-Tiki Museum

    Oslo, Norway | Strange Science

In 1947 Thor Heyerdahl and a crew of five others sailed 4300 miles, from Peru to the Pacific islands, in a raft they had constructed from balsa wood. Many people thought it was a suicide mission, but on August 7, 1947 after 101 days in the open ocean the Kon-Tiki (the name given to the raft) crashed onto a reef on the Raroia island. The men had successfully rafted 8000 kms or 1/5th of the way around the earths circumference.

At the time of the expedition one of great unsolved ethnographic mysteries was how the original inhabitants of Polynesian islands were able to navigate the thousands of miles of open ocean and populate distant scattered islands with stone age technology. One of proposed theories was that the Polynesian people started their migration from South America in pre-Columbian times, and used prevailing westward winds to carry their rafts across the ocean. Heyerdahl intention was to prove this theory was valid by doing it himself.

Peru was chosen as a starting point of the expedition. The Kon-Tiki raft was constructed out of balsa wood, bamboo and ropes, using only technology available to people of pre-Columbian America. The crew quickly found that the ocean current pushed them at a steady pace of 1.5 knots and they were able to steer using a system of a lashed outrigger and sideboards that stuck into the water at varying depths.

The crew had little trouble with food and though they were provided with MRI’s, flying fish constantly flopped on-board (going so far as to occasionally provide a wet slap in the face to one of the crew as they sailed through the air) and these, along with shark, dolphin, squid and a soup made of plankton constituted their meals. All of which helped prove that there was no technical obstacle for ancient Peruvian people to explore the Pacific.

Unfortunately for Heyerdahl, subsequent linguistic and genetic research has proven that the origin of Polynesian peoples lies in Asia and that their migration had an eastward direction. Heyerdahl believed it impossible that the ancient explorers would set sail against the prevailing winds. In reality it was exactly the fact that they could rely on the westward wind to safely return them home in case of unsuccessful expedition, that encouraged these ancient navigators to sail ever more to the east.

Proceedings from the documentary movie and the book about his first expedition provided Heyerdahl with the money to fund several more trips including a 1955-1956 expedition to Rapa Nui, a 1969 and 1970 cross-Atlantic expeditions from Morocco to America in reed rafts Ra and Ra II, and a 1978 expedition in reed raft Tigris across Indian ocean.

The original Kon-Tiki raft is at the display in the museum. The museum also contains replicas of Ra, Ra II and Tigris rafts, as well as maps and additional material from the now legendary Heyerdahl expeditions.

  • Microsoft Makes Work Fun: Office Launches “Ribbon Hero”, A Social Game

Forget Farmville or Mafia Wars, Microsoft wants you to play Excel –pivot tables FTW.

Most software training and help resources are painful experiences written by technical publication editors.  We know that most tutorial and help sections within applications are horrible to work with (I’ve shaken my head in frustration quite a few times using Microsoft’s own tutorial tools), and not every office worker can afford to attend a powerpoint training class.

Microsoft's "Ribbon Hero" is a social game that encourages people to learn the product
Click above image to see my notes: Powerpoint users are given challenges, like this artistic effect, to win points which are used to brag on Facebook.

    Learning game encourages social sharing
First, click on the image to see my additional notes.   I rarely get excited at briefings, however big-enterprise Microsoft is doing something interesting. In an effort to make learning fun and increase usage of Microsoft office products, they’ve launched a pilot program called “Ribbon Hero” (read blog, or watch video).  Much like a game you’d find on Facebook, Ribbon Hero lets users of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and other office applications score points by unlocking challenges –then touting it to their friends.

Microsoft staff creates ‘challenges’ in the software, and encourages users to play to learn.  As users unlock challenges (see screenshot above) they can earn up to a max of 300 points per product,  and can choose to share their scoring with their Facebook friends on the Fan page.  Don’t think there’s any social captial here? well if people can brag about their fictitious mafia wars scores, we should expect them to tout their real-world workplace proficiencies.

    Innovation exposes challenges
There are three four major hurdles as I see it: 1) I’m not confident that this launch will reach a wide audience in the workplace, it may skew towards Gen X and Y. 2) Secondly, they’ll need to overcome the barriers of those who score low being bashful about their scores, and not wanting to share with others. 3) It’ll take some studies to show that professionals that complete the challenges (300/300 points) are better workers, then get HR to promote, 4) Lastly, like all games, they can be cheated, like gaming hint websites, expect there to be a ‘tip blog’ for Ribbon Hero.

Microsoft most tap into new opportunities:
Although we’ve not tried Ribbon Hero, this is an innovative way to encourage users to learn about a typically single person product -and then share with their friends.  Microsoft sharing data with Facebook (who they’ve invested in) doesn’t seem like their typical big box culture, kudos for them for doing something out of their normal engineering culture. Yet despite these upsides, Microsoft must:

    • Harness reputation points to grow the program. has just scratched the surface in using this reputation data like they have with the Microsoft MVP advocacy program to create a non-paid growing army of Microsoft Office experts.
    • Add features to enable game to scale. 1) Q&A features that allows members to pose questions to each other and answering them, gaining more points, 2) Challenges to be created by the members themselves, growing the game at a scalable pace for high achievers. Never letting the game end.
    • Develop a global leaderboard of top users. Allow them to build profiles as true ‘Office Heros’ and how they succeed at their job on a separate website, and encourage them to share their achievements on their blogs, resume and LinkedIn pages.
    • Measure based on new benchmarks. 1) Top line adoption curves skew up 2) Reliance on existing support features goes down 3) Ten solid case studies of people getting new jobs or promotions in part because of their proficiency at the game.

I’m sure we’ll hear more about this from Microsoft –and maybe other traditional enterprise software companies like IBM, Oracle, and social fearful, Apple, will follow suit.  I gotta hand it to Microsoft on this one, they’re finally making work fun. Lastly, ya know I gotta ask, but will Clippy make a cameo in the game?

  • German solar industry faces subsidy cut

    by Agence France-Presse

BERLIN—Germany, the world’s biggest market for solar cells, is poised to slash its subsidies for solar power by as much as 17 percent, Economy Minister Rainer Bruederle said on Tuesday.

“I envisage an order of magnitude of 16 to 17 percent,” Bruederle said at an energy conference in Berlin.

Electricity produced by solar power in Germany is sold at a minimum price guaranteed by the government to help producers compete with firms using fossil fuels and nuclear power that can produce power much more cheaply.

This guaranteed price has already been reduced gradually—the subsidy was already cut by 10 percent from January 1 this year—but pressure has grown on the government to accelerate the process.

Experts say the subsidy fails to spur competition in the industry, which represents less than one percent of the total electricity production in Germany, Europe’s top economy.

The solar sector itself has said it is prepared to accept a cut in the subsidy, but that anything above 10 percent would be intolerable.

After years of dazzling results, Germany’s solar industry has succumbed to the gloom enveloping the broader economy, with competition from Asia also taking the shine off the sector.

The world’s top solar cell maker, Q-Cells, saw its turnover plunge by over 40 percent in the first nine months of 2009.

  • For Developers: Microsoft shutters Mobile2Market developer program, replaced by Marketplace

    mac_signup

According to an email sent last week by Microsoft to Mobile2Market members, Microsoft will discontinue Mobile2Market, its mobile application certification and marketing program for independent software and hardware vendors.

"Benefits of the program–including Buy It Now functionality with online distributors, the Windows Mobile Catalog, the Designed for Windows Mobile 6 logo, and Microsoft Partner Points–will no longer be available after that date,"  "The Logo License Agreement for Windows Mobile 5.0, 6.0, and 6.1 also will end effective February 18, 2010, at which time distribution of and all references to the aforementioned logos will need to cease."

The program is set to terminate on the 18th February, and Microsoft has not explained its decision.

One suspicion may be the replacement of of the program with one centred around Marketplace, as Microsoft is encouraging developers to turn there.

  • 5 Food Trends For 2010

     Wholefoods_greens_small

Note about the picture: At my local Whole Foods, they had a table of these small bunches of various organic greens for $1.99 a bunch. There was chard, kale, mustard, and dandelion. What is cool is that I can buy a small bunch for under $2 and know that I will eat the whole thing versus having to get a normally large bunch and end up not eating it all because it’s too much.

Because I have fun playing the guessing game, based purely upon my observations shopping, cooking, eating, and reading blogs/sites , here are 5 food trends I see for 2010:

Addressing food allergies: There will be a rise in food products and dishes at restaurants that cater to those with food allergies and intolerances because more and more people are discovering they have reactions to certain foods like dairy, egg, wheat, nuts, and seafood. From the  National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, here are some quick facts about food allergies like, “Food allergy occurs in 6 to 8 percent of children 4 years of age or under, and in 3.7 percent of adults.”

In the blogging community, there are growing numbers of blogs focused on food allergies and intolerances. One of the biggest niches is gluten-free blogs. Noshtopia is not one food allergy focused blog but the theme is a prevalent one because I have allergies to dairy, eggs, almonds, and certain beans.

Cooking for mixed eating households: Mom is vegan, kid has Celiac disease, and Dad eats meatloaf and potatoes. In the modern family, not everyone eats the same and people are busier than ever. Cooking for a scenario like this one can be a challenge. I see more recipes addressing how to start off with a basic dish and then adjusting or adding to appeal to all or as many family members as possible. For example for the family above, a gluten free pasta served with tomato basil sauce, will work for mom and kid. Adding meatballs on top will appeal to dad.

Food packaged in smaller portions: I have noticed in certain grocery stores particularly in areas where there are more singles and DINKs (double income, no kids), food packaged for a single to two person serving. Given that people are waiting longer to get married, divorce and single-parent families are on the rise, smaller portion packaged foods would also be appealing to these smaller households. And there are those who just want to eat smaller portions for example like those who are watching their weight, but still want to enjoy a smaller portion of a favorite food like a piece of cake versus a whole cake.

As a single person myself, I can attest to the fact that I won’t buy things like a whole box of cookies, but if it’s packaged in say a quantity of 2-3, I will buy it. The smaller packaging is great for stores too because like in deli foods, they can take end pieces cut them into smaller pieces and sell them. There is less waste.

Cheaper organic foods: Local farmer’s markets and organic co-ops can offer cheaper deals for fresh organic produce. Bigger food store chains are importing organic produce from other countries where cost is cheaper. Yes, there’s debate on organic standards because not all countries have the same guidelines, but let’s say for argument’s sake those standards can be better unified and monitored in time.

Whole Foods 365 brand also offers organic products at cheaper costs compared to some national brands mainly because Whole Foods can get better deals because they can buy in much bigger bulk thus extending the savings to their customer. For example, a bottle of organic ketchup at Whole Foods is around $1.99 where a bottle of Safeway’s O organic ketchup can run around $2.69.

Goji Berry will go mainstream in the US: At most given times there is some power food that is trendy. Recently, there was Acai Berry. Goji Berry is appearing more and more in foods like cereal, food bars, and drinks in health stores or chains like Whole Foods whose shoppers tend to be more early adopters. Goji Berry is being touted for all its health benefits particularly its antioxidant beefiness, and I see it being the next popular super fruit in the mainstream in places like health-marketed cereal like Special K, waffles, cookies, bagels, and energy/health drinks like Gatorade or Fruit infused waters.

In fact, I have no doubt some manufacturer right now is working on or has out already a bottled Goji Berry infused water that will be marketed as, “Stay youthful and hydrated with the ant-aging properties of Goji Berry, a secret only previously known in the Himalayan mountains.” Sounds like some magical elixir doesn’t it?

So these are the food trends I see, what about you? What are your thoughts on food trends for 2010?

  • Attempted Robbery at Downtown 711 Caught on Video

    Los Angeles.
Los Angeles police detectives are asking for the public’s help to solve
an attempted robbery that occurred at a downtown 7-11 convenience store
just after midnight this morning, January 18, 2010.

One clerk was behind the register when an armed Black man, in his 20’s,
walked into the store yelling, "Open the register quick. Give me the
money." Another employee, who was stocking the drink cooler, heard the
    commotion.

"He commanded over and over to open the register with the rifle pointed
in the man’s face," said Lt. Paul Vernon, who heads-up detectives
downtown.  "For whatever reason, the clerk couldn’t open the drawer and
started calling for his partner to do it. It’s a very tense few
    moments."

The gunman leads the clerk to the cooler, but when neither employee can
open the register, he leaves without taking anything.  Several
witnesses saw him running, gun in hand, along 7th Street, then south on
Grand Avenue.  Witnesses also described a second man who may have acted
as a lookout at the door during the robbery.

"We want everyone to look closely at the video and consider the
suspect’s clothing description," Vernon said.  "It’s distinct enough
that it might be familiar to someone who knows this robber.  Just put
yourself in this clerk’s place and imagine how scary this must have
    been."

The robber was wearing a black night-watch cap; a brown and white
striped shirt; and he had orange long sleeves from a shirt underneath.
He also wore gloves, blue jeans, and a gold watch with a black wrist
band.  He was between 20 and 30 years old, 5’10", with a 3 to 4-day
growth of beard.  His gun appears to be a .22 caliber rifle.

His lookout was also a Black man, 5’6", in his 20’s, dressed in dark clothing.

The 7-11 is located at 500 W. 7th Street. Police spent several hours at
the store, searching with police dogs and gathering evidence.

Anyone with information is asked to call Central Robbery Detective John
Arredondo at 213-972-1248.  During non-business hours or on weekends
calls, calls may also be directed to 1-877-LAPD-24-7.  Anyone wishing
to remain anonymous should call Crimestoppers at 800-222-TIPS
(800-222-8477).  Tipsters may also contact Crimestoppers by texting to
phone number 274637 (C-R-I-M-E-S on most keypads) with a cell phone.
All text messages should begin with the letters "LAPD." Tipsters may
also go to LAPDOnline.org, click on "webtips" and follow the prompts.

Lt. Vernon is available for interviews between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM at
Central Police Station, 251 E. 6th Street, Los Angeles.  The video is
available for recording and includes audio.

  • No “official” diagnosis…but…..

Hi! I was posting alot on here a year and a half ago when I got my first A1c of 5.8 I dieted and lost some weight and by April of 08′ brought my A1c down to 5.6. I loosed control…was in a bit of denial and ate and drank what I liked for the past year or so….Recent A1c 5.9.

Dr. Refuses to recognize "pre-diabetes" says "you either are or you’re not"…..she says I’m still "normal" (by the Unilab standards" but barely. She said if I gain 10 more pounds in the next six months she wants to do another A1c. IF I am at 6.0 she wants me on Metaformin right away…(but at 5.9 she wants to do nothing but re-test in ONE year’s time?) I have SO many questions…..

    1. Dr. says "normal" but seems to expect it to go over 6.0 at some point. Does it ALWAYS??? She will consider me lucky if it doesn’t. If full-blown diabetics manage to lower their A1cs through diet and exercise only….my dad’s was 12 at diagnosis and he got it down between 6-7 in a matter of months. Then wouldn’t it be logical to say that I can bring my A1c from 5.9 down to close to 5.0? and into a truly normal range?

    2. Which brings me to my next question/observation…..IF people with "abnormal" A1c’s (high normal) CAN get their A1c’s into the normal range 4.0-5.5%) Then why is it a "given" by the medical profession that I WILL progress?? I’ve heard alot of people say Diabetes is a progressive disease. IF that’s so…than how are so many able to halt or even reverse its progression? Isn’t it possible to keep the A1c in the truly normal range (from the pre-D range) FOREVER????

I’m considered full-blown diabetic by some…I realize that I may very well be..however…I have SOME shred of hope of avoiding the medical diagnosis…and returning my A1c to a level BELOW pre-D ranges.

I’ve lost 6 llbs recently and am low-carbing like crazy but have the sinking feeling it may not be enough (to avoid going into the "official" D range) and if it isn’t then what’s the point of trying so hard?? *Sigh* life is complicated.

  • Apple Rumors Gone Amok

I’ve been an iPod-listening, iPhone-talking, iMac-computing, Macbook-toting Apple fan since 1986 when I first used AppleWorks on a Apple IIe. I’ve stood behind the platform through thick and thin and my t-shirt collection proves it. However, one aspect of the Apple culture to which I refuse to subscribe is rumors and conjecture.

The iSlate (or is it now iTablet again?) frenzy has me particularly annoyed and Gawker’s recent “scavenger hunt” for clues about the mythical new Apple device makes me want to zap their PRAM with extreme prejudice. I’m puzzled as to what purpose knowing about potential Apple’s products a few weeks early could serve? Asking people to risk their jobs to serve the Apple paparazzi machine is completely irresponsible.

I’m also concerned that the rumor mongering is expanding at an exponential level. Theorizing what Apple could or should come up with is great. For an awesome retrospective of such products check out Appledesign: The Work of the Apple Industrial Design Group. The line between fictional Apple announcements and rumors is thin. In 2010, with image and video editing tools, fans can create a fictional Apple product, report it as a rumor, and be taken seriously. Actual true, verifiable Apple news a few weeks before a suspected product announcement grinds to a halt. Personally, I think TheAppleBlog has done a good job or steering clear of the more fanciful theories out there and focusing on what is more plausible and real.

My friends at Apple have some interesting takes on the rumor frenzy which I find fascinating. As TheAppleBlog already reported, some leaks are intentional. The more rumors spread and mutate, the less likely the “true” leak is recognized. With so many different images of what the Tablet could be, nobody is 100 percent sure of what it actually is. More fascinating is that sometimes these fan visualizations of what could be are viewed by Apple employees and could be incorporated into later products. The rumors could serve as prototypes of the next generation.

So is that why everyone is into rumors? To improve Apple design? I suspect for most it’s just impatience. Everyone’s so excited for “one more thing,” they’re willing to risk it all for a glimpse. And this is different than paparazzi taking pictures of celebrities walking their dogs how?

Wait until Christmas morning to open the presents and stop looking in the closet to see where Mom stashed the Hanukkah goodies.

This is just one writer’s opinion on the lack of value in rumors. What’s yours?
